Review from Beverly W.
Vancouver, BC
Came here for a family birthday dinner and was pleased with the service. We had attendants change our plates throughout the meal and the food came out quickly. It was non-stop eating!
For group of 10 people, the bill including tax and tip was under $500 and we had plenty of leftovers for everyone.
We brought in a cake as well and the staff helped cut and serve it. Love the fact that they don't charge a "cake cutting and serving" fee!
The restaurant isn't fancy but the food and service is good.1 Previous Review: Show all »

They don't have the best selection of dim sum items on a weekday but they are cheap! The siu mai was big, plump, and fully stuffed with shrimps while the fried prawn rolls are chrunchy and delicious. The steamed pork ribs was disappointing though as it is mostly bones. If available, order their hot-off-the-oven egg tarts because I think they are some of the best I've had. I was going to get some extra tarts to-go but they were out of it. =( I'll be coming more often if not because it is all the way in Richmond.

You gotta love typical Chinese restaurants. You come in to a well decorated room. aquariums with fresh fish, crabs, and lobsters about to be killed and cooked in tasty broth or sauce, big tables with a "lazy Susan" Loud Asians yelling and having a good time. Majong playing behind the wall ;) u know... the usual. or at lease what i see all the freakin time!...
I always judge a Chinese restaurant by there peeking duck. The way is presented from the duck skin and tri- colored chips with wraps and hoisen sauce., to the lettuce wrap. Fresh crispy lettuce with ground duck meat and veggies. yum! and "yes" i am a fan" ;)
The Hot and sour soup, Fried rice with gravy, chow mein, honey garlic ribs (huge btw!) crispy chicken, can't remember what else we ordered but all VERY flavorful and satisfying ;)
All of the food here is very good! the service is even better! especially on hella busy days. I have yet to try their dim sum so that's on my "things i gotta hit up" list ;) -

A decent place for dim sum. They have all your familiar dishes such as har gow, sui mai, lo bak gao, pork/chicken buns, vegetable/meat dumplings, egg tarts, etc. This is what one those restaurants which is old school. You'll see items on carts pushed by ladies around your table.
Unfortunately, none of the dishes really stood out. My Dad's friend from a small town in Ohio wasn't even excited about most of the dishes that went through our table. Luckily, the quality of their dim sum is better than most dim sum restaurants in the suburbs. I just didn't see any special signature dishes which makes me want to return.
All in all, it's good place to start if you're new to dim sum and the prices are very reasonable.
Two dollars a dish on the weekdays before 12 a.m.
Dim Sum dishes on the weekends cost $2.50. -

Vancouver, BC
I've been to this restaurant several times since moving to Vancouver.
For me, it's the less fancier counterpart of Sun Sui Wah with regards to the decor and price. Although I've never had dimsum here, their dinner entrees are pretty tasty. I remember having my first ever Alaskan crab here (3 ways) and I loved the garlic & butter portion, as well as the fried parts and the curry rice they serve on the shell. I also recommend their 3-way Peking duck, which is priced reasonably. Their pigeon is also one of the best I've tasted, crispy skin on the outside and yet, succulent and moist inside.
Like the other reviewers, I highly recommend the gai-lan dish (just to get the oiliness from my previous orders balanced).
Of course, during dinner this is definitely not a "one dollar sign" restaurant. The decor is poor but the wait-staff is consistently nice & accommdating (an amusing surprise to Chinese restos nowadays). Look for Johnson, he may get frazzled at times but he smiles a lot &is polite.
This definitely for me blows away snobby Kirin in DT Vancouver. Try it! You'll see. :-) -

One of the better places in Richmond for a good authentic Chinese dinner. I've only had their dim sum once, so I can't really comment on that, but I've been here a million times for dinner with my family - we'll drive all the way from New West just to eat there - so the staff recognize us now. If you tell them, "no MSG" and please, "use less oil", they'll actually listen (my Mom is completely allergic to MSG). You have to try their Alaskan King Crab when it's in season around April-ish; so frackin' good...

For budget dim sum, this is the place to come.
$2.50 for all dim sum, $4.50 for specialty dishes.
This place is one of the few places that does the traditional cart style dim sum. They have quite the variety here, with some dishes that I haven't seen in a while. Water chestnut cake, deep fried salt & pepper silver fish, deep fried chicken knee...and of course, they have your standard congee, siu mai, har gow, prawn stuffed eggplant with black bean sauce...You can also order items that you don't see on the cart from them.Freshly baked egg tarts here are pretty awesome. Hot flaky crust, with a smooth silky sweet egg center.
Order them ahead of time, as they do run out.
Service here is quick and efficient, the servers here work as a team so communication between them is great, and all our requests were met. The cart ladies as well as the servers are all able to speak English, or you can always just point to what you want.
They don't use the best tea, but this is what you will need to sacrifice if you want a good deal on the dim sum. Parking is very limited in the parking lot, especially on the weekends.Listed in: Dim Sum Fun!

One of the staple places for dimsum.
Parking is mostly ample thanks to a large lot.
Washrooms aren't 100% clean, but are tolerable.
Staff are somewhat friendly. Dimsum isn't too heavy on the MSG which is nice. They're $2.50 for the most part.
My only complaint is that 3 dimsum carts aren't enough to service such a large restaurant. It also meant that the selection was a bit limited compared to other places.
I've also been here for dinner in the past. Again, it's not the world's nicest place, but the food is decent, and I found the service to be slightly better compared to lunch. -

Wow! I went back to BC to visit my family and a friend told me about this place. My family and I went there and were impressed by the quick and tasty food for so cheap! We got there at 10:45am and the place was busy but we were seated right away. We had a ton of dim sim and were stuffed to the brim! I couldn't believe our bill was $38 for the 4 of us.
Honestly, I was also surprised how nice the staff was too! If you want to eat some lunch before heading to the airport, I totally recommend this place! -

Richmond, BC
This place is cheap!! Go before 12 and each plate is only $2 - a steal! Most other dim sum places change their prices at 11, but here you have the extra hour. We got there around 11:30 and had all our food by the time it hit 12. There was always a large variety of dim sum circulating on the floor and were all fresh and hot off the cart. Service was normal of a dim sum place, fast paced, but not overly hurried. Not sure if it is the same in English, but definitely in Chinese those going around with the carts can be a bit pushy, trying to get you to take more food.
This place is one of the few left with the push carts. Brings back memories of childhood dim sum sessions with family. The dim sum wasn't outstanding, but it was passable. For its price, its delicious.
We ordered 10 dim sum dishes ($2 each), a larger dim sum dish ($2.50) and a specialty dish ($4.50). There was also a tea charge - a dollar per person. We had tons of leftovers. I would highly recommend this place for someone's first experience with dim sum or if you prefer seeing what you are ordering before you order it. -

I come up to Vancouver, Canada (Richmond B.C.) atleast once a year to visit everyone on my mom's side of the family. The trip usually consists of eating at our families favorite locations (price, quality of food, service, or they know some one who works at that restaurant). This place happens to be my uncles favorite spot so we've been coming here for the past 2 years for dim sum and for dinner.
Service is fast, food is served HOT, and if you're plate looks dirty, one of the servers will replace it for a new plate right away! I took out some family (table of 16) for dinner here this past weekend. Ordered 2 crabs, duck, fish, chicken, noodles, rice, veges, etc. We had two boxes of left overs in the end and our total bill came out to just under $300 after tax and tip!!! I know here in the states, a dinner like this would've cost me $450+! Awesome food for the price!
Dim sum.... my mouth is watering already and I haven't written anything about it yet!! My uncle always describes the har gow (shrimp dumpling) here to be the size of golf balls or "BABY FISTS"....and he's not lying! I opened mine up to see whats inside and I counted 4 shrimp in one dumpling!!!! The shumai was just as big, full of crunch and flavor... I can go on and describe everything that I ate, but that list is never ending! Lets just say, I'm a big fan of this place... authentic HK style chinese food for an affordable price!!! -
Review from Angela L.
When I brought my Swedish friend for a visit to Vancouver the other day and he inquired what this "dim sim thing" he's heard so much about was, my mom got super excited to give him a first taste of this uniquely Chinese dining experience. Without a moment's thought, she decided on South Ocean "so that he can see the offerings and make an informed decision" she added matter-of-factly. Unlike the hundreds of other restaurants that serve dim sum in both Vancouver and Richmond, where you have to half guess your orders after reading always varied and sometimes hilarious descriptions of the dishes, (assuming that like I, you cannot read Chinese either), and tick them off of a card, South Ocean still serves their sweet and savoury delights ($2+ each) old school style - in little bamboo containers, pushed around on carts by friendly older ladies who will kindly attempt English explanations of the dishes if you so much as begin to make a confused face.
It turned out to be a great decision since Chinese food, let alone dim sum, was completely foreign to my friend. Being able to see all the options before ordering was not only a benefit, but a colourful sensory experience for him. Although this is not the very best quality the city has to offer, it is a very decent representation at more than fair prices - the bill for five of us was only $35! A lavish 10 course seafood dinner for ten can run as low as $150 and the server will happily help you make your selections. Tip: anything swimming in abundance in the tanks is pretty much a tasty bet.
One cautionary detail though, there is an angry pen-scribbled "pee in the toilet and not on the seat!" warning in the women's washroom for a reason. This always makes me laugh, but consider yourself warned, cuz it's not a pleasant surprise if you don't expect it. The location can also be tricky to get to if you don't have a car and you'll need a large crew (or appetite) if you want to try more than just a few dishes, but for the great low prices and the lively authentic atmosphere, it might just be worth the trip into Richmond (that is, if you also don't live there already). -

Just average.
If i remembered correctly, the Dim Sum was average too.
Serivce was ok, but not great. Small portions too.
