This tiny little gem of a place on Rice Howard Way is the place to get nice hearty soup on a slightly cool- to absolutely freezing day. It really warms the cockles of anyone's cold cynical heart.

The basics.  They serve soup.  It comes in three sizes ( forgive me if the ounces are off) small (6 oz.), medium (8 oz.) and large (10 oz.).  You have your three choices, meat, veg & seafood. The soups change everyday, and it's rare to get duplicates.  If you need something to accompany your soup, they also sell a delicious cornbread on the side.  And occasionally there's also they most amazing custard tarts from the Portuguese bakery... dangerous little things those tarts are.  You can also get the Culina frozen dinners here as well.

Because the menu is constantly changing, the soup can vary from absolutely amazing to quite good. However, I've been there a few times now and have never walked away unhappy.  A couple of the ones to try are the Balinese Coconut and Pepitas, the Lobster Bisque, and the Wild Salmon with Brie and Dill. The medium is a good size if you're quite hungry, but the small is still substantial. The price for soup is a little more expensive then if you were to get it other places, but it makes up for it in the quality of ingredients and the innovative soup flavours.

Some things to know before going are they only accept cash and be prepared for a different menu each time.  There are frozen soups you can get to take home, but if you want a specific soup one day, you may be out of luck.

Soul Soup is an excellent choice for a good hearty meal on the go.  It leaves with you  that warm happy feeling inside when you're done and you'll be scraping the bottom for that last tasty bit.

I can scarcely believe I'm the first one here to review this place - but admittedly, the location is pretty well hidden, nestled in a easy to miss corner of Rice Howard Way. Forget driving here, there's no parking to speak of so transportation by foot is the way to go. I believe they're only open for lunch on weekdays so it's limited to the downtown crowd.

All that said, all the effort to get here is worth it - there are no Soup Nazi's behind the counter dispensing soup and abuse in equal servings. There are 3 made from scratch that day options to choose from - a meat, a veg, and a seafood. The most difficult choice, at least for an omnivore, is only choosing one. A vegetarian fellow worker attested to the quality of this place and now whenever he is asked where he'd like to go for lunch, Soul Soup invariably comes up.

There is also an extensive list of frozen soups to choose from for you to take home.

If you are a lover of soup you owe it to yourself to check this place out, the hindrances of time and space be damned.

I finally made it to Soul Soup! To be honest, just the mention of the name conjured up images of that Seinfeld episode featuring the Soup Nazi. Fortunately, the staff are actually quite friendly and the place is quite classy.

Soul Soup features three fresh soups daily: selections for meat, fish, and vegetarian. The menu changes every day and the soups come in a variety of sizes from the small 8 ounce ($5) to the family-sized bucket ($21). I opted for an 8 ounce and because the downtown lunch rush was long over, was able to site down at one of the few seats.

I chose the meat selection, which was beef and barely with horseradish cream.  For 8 ounces, it was quite a substantial portion, although if I was really hungry I probably would opt for the next size up, the 16 ounce ($8). The soup was full of tender beef and lods of barley. The horseradish cream gave a smoothness to the broth, without the kick of the horseradish being too hard.

What really made the soup special for me was the fresh, crunchy, whole wheat bun that accompanied it. And the small candy placed inside my napkin was a sweet surprise.

If I am near Rice Howard Way and am in need of a hearty soup to keep me warm, I would definitely head to Soul Soup again.

This place is great to mix up the monotony of downtown lunch haunts. A bit pricey but worth every penny. My favorites are always the veg offerings but I have been tempted by the meat and seafood options as they are often unique and original soups. As for ambience, it's more of a take away place as there is limited seating (they have 2 tables and a small "bar" with 4 seats) and it is unlikely you will snag a place to sit over the lunch hour.
I also love that they post their soups on their twitter page - it's just so handy to check out the menu before I head over.  I have done takeaway soup for supper and it  makes an excellent supper.

With over 70 soups in rotation, there is a great selection of fresh and frozen soups. The owner, Carla Alexander has a real passion for food and it comes out in her soups.  The store itself is funky gem for a city lacking in imagination.  I agree with the other reviewer, you owe it to yourself to go!

My only problem with Soul Soup is that it doesn't have longer hours (though I can understand it). Their soup is absolutely wonderful! While I have never brought home any of their frozen soups (although I should give them a try), I have ALWAYS had a positive experience with their fresh soups. This is my "go to" place if I am lucky enough to have a day off of work, or if my lovely boyfriend is willing to pick some up for me when I am home sick. Seriously, nothing tastes better and is more uplifting on a day when you're not feeling so hot than some Soul Soup. It's happiness in a cup....seriously!
