When I was working at a local paper I did a story on the Compassion House and was so impressed by the place. It is for women with breast cancer who live outside of Edmonton and have come into the city to undergo treatments. This house is such a blessing for them. They have a lovely space with supportive people around them, and other women going through the same life obstacle as they are. It's geared toward Northern Alberta women who are being diagnosed, undergoing treatment, or going through recovery. This gives me a lot of respect for the Sorrentino's restaurant chain. They own tons of food establishments in the city and they're giving back such a beautiful gift to our community. The great thing about this place is it is a house in a regular neighbourhood and women get their own rooms and have whatever privacy they want, but they also have the support of an understanding community if they want it. The woman who directs this establishment, Barbara Walker, is one of the most caring and compassionate women I've ever met. She exuded a deep and genuine warmth in our interview that is rare to find. The women who were staying here, whom I had the opportunity to meet, seemed to be truly grateful for a place to be comfortable during a difficult time.
