So I have returned
Tried the dark side of the mug made with water instead on milk...oh boy, it is awesome I think I may be converted.
I also had a whiskey truffle and some sort of plain chocolate truffle...there are no words.
I need to ensure I never live very close to Soma...I would never be out of that place. Can I just say the Easter eggs look amazing! I may need to purchase one!1 Previous Review: Show all »

Pros: Roasted Almond gelato
Cons: Service
Parking space: No private parking
Good for big groups: No
On Saturday around 2:00PM, the store was not so full. One of the negative points was not offering more places to sit there and enjoy the gelatos or sorbets. But my wife and I found two seats for us to sit together.
I can't deny. The ice cream was very good. I had he roasted almond gelato and I'm still thinking on it, even many hours after eating it. But the service was something frustrating because when I asked if they had another flavors, the woman told me that they had more at the other store, something that I found on the same day that was wrong, because the other store was only going to start serving gelatos or sorbets until next week.
Overall, the gelato was very good but the service was very bad. The worst part beyond going to the other store and not finding what I want, was asking for where it was the subway on the Spadina Avenue and the guy told me that was very near to go walking what was wrong and I made my pregnant wife walking a lot without a need for that. Next time, I would ask if you do not know, do not give wrong information to the people. Because of this, I have no desire to go back to this location anymore and I don't recommend it! -

It's a great, quiet place to go and have a cup of hot chocolate without having the hassle and busy-ness of a Starbucks, or people surrounding you with their laptops.
Besides, who caters to the non-coffee folk like myself!!!?!?
My friend had the Mayan hot chocolate which she liked the spicy undertones of, but I preferred the classic. Very dark cocoa and it was just delicious.
Highly recommended for getting together with a friend and having a great chat over a cup of hot chocolate. -

Mayan Hot Chocolate with my Hot and Spicy Best Friend at Soma Chocolatemaker?!
On a winter day nothing better than sipping a liquid dessert and just daydream or just catching up with your friend....
I personally love the space at the King Street location a lot better than the location at Distillery! The spacious high ceiling, the seating, and the open kitchen that you can really look at how those chocolate are made!
Please tell me Hot Chocolate if they are spicy, they are not flattening?! Please just lie to me?! I will believe everything you say.... -

A few things make me smile from ear to ear, chocolate is one of them.
Soma Chocolatemaker is a one happy place. Even people behind the counter were cheery and friendly. It must be the chocolate.
My new best friend and I ordered Mayan Hot Chocolate with steamed milk. I knew it was going to be tasty when I saw the barista filling the cup with thick melted chocolate. And I was right on. Mayan Hot Chocolate was perfect for a cold winter afternoon. Loved the richness of the chocolate and steamed milk combo. An little kick from a dash of pepper was nice.
Loved the ambiance. Seats along the large front windows are the perfect place to sit, catch up with friends and let your wandering eyes run wild. -

Excellent chocolate!! We were going to dinner and came across SOMA by accident. My friend actually recommended it to us because I kept saying how much I liked Bernard Callebaut in Calgary. The chocolate is very smooth. My favorite is the dark chocolate. It's not too strong and bitter but they still manage to keep it smooth. My husband got 10 truffles to try and I wasn't too crazy about them. Just stick to buying the bars. I got some fancy Easter bunnies and they're $16!! I'm not a fan of the white chocolate because it is just too sweet! We're running low on chocolate and I must go back!!!

Love this location. Great ambience, good design layout and space...so conducive for a nice cup of hot mayan choc!
The pizzettas were yummy...the chocolates are good...what more can you ask for?
So lucky that my office is just round the corner on Spadina! -

With Christmas fast approaching, I have a sneaking suspicion i will be visiting this store more often. Upon entering you are overwhelmed with chocolate options. (The perfect stocking stuffers!) They have options of truffles or brittle or chocolate bars etc.. the options are pretty much endless!)
The atmosphere in this store is wonderful. They kept the old building feel but made it such a user friendly layout. To the left are the chocolates to buy, to the right is a coffee bar. I suggest the espresso over gelato. Its delicious.
I also suggest you take the time to enjoy your beverage in the store as you can sit and watch people making the chocolate in the glassed in factory.
The location is incredibly accessible ( much better than trekking to the Distillery)
If you are stuck for what to get someone, head to Soma.. (I love chocolates with almonds in case you are feeling generous) :) -

OMG! Chocolate overload! I got a sugar high just walking in. We came here for desert after dinner. Didn't know what to expect but they do have lots to choose from. One nice surprise was that they have gelato!
I ended up getting a classic hot chocolate with skimmed milk and of course a lemon gelato. A weird combination but I had to try the gelato and it was delish. They also have a small area for seating at the back. I will most likely come back again for some actual chocolate this time and I heard the coffee is good too.
They have tons and tons of different chocolates and would definitely be great for gifts for Christmas! -

Surprisingly, didn't get a chance to have some of the chocolate there, but my friend and I ended up here after dinner on King West for some dessert.
I ordered myself some affogato -- vanilla gelato with espresso on top. It was better than most gelato places that I have gone to, but still - nothing beats Terroni's affogato - hands down. -

I believe SOMA at Distillery District is paradise. That said, having another Soma one block away from my office would be unbelievable. This store is shiny, beautiful, smells good, and would have everything needed for a solid 5 star review. Then you ask me, Renata, why is this amazing Soma location underserving of your 5-cocoa-stars?
I was served by the most pretentious guy EVER. I understand it must be awesome to work in a place like this if you are a chocoholic, but there is a big difference between suggesting products based on your knowledge, and trying to convince the customers you are a Mayan god. Extremely boring attitude. I asked about the percentage of cocoa in a truffle, he talked for HOURS about the chocolate blend blah blah blah and did not answer my question. I walked away, grabbed a bar of Arcana (100% cocoa) and asked for a random truffle (everything IS good, it's a win-win situation). He insisted in asking me if I ever had the Arcana before because you know it's 100% cocoa and... YES AND I AM HERE BECAUSE OF IT. Then I paid and he finally stopped talking. Oh man.
But the place is awesome. Would go there every single day if I could. Oh, wait, now I can.... Dangerous! -

So incredibly happy that this second location is so much more accessible than the original at Distillery. Much as I love the atmosphere in that corner of the town, without a car, it is a bit inconvenient to get to.
This location, so incredibly accessible at King St W and Spadina, really is a gold standard! The SMELL of chocolate and all things decadent wafts past you as soon as you enter through the doors. The lovely dark wood decor, the rich odour of cocoa and the sight of dark brown chocolate confections greets your eyes and hugs you. It's hard not to be happy, and to be lighter of wallet when you come here.
The Mayan Hot Chocolate, so good, so spicy and perfect any day! I love the flourless chocolate cake too. It is incredibly rich and two people can easily share this together for a delicious break.
The large window at the front of the store really is great for pictures and people watching on the street. -

Wow!! Who knew this was so close to my place. Just two weeks ago, I was saying that no Gelato has blown my mind (see review: laboratorio del gelato, NYC).
Found this place last night while on the hunt for ice cream. Beautiful store, the espresso menu looked great and the chocolates tempted me. BUT the gelato was AMAZING. I shit you not, I dreamt about it last night.
I had the ontario strawberry, and the bf had chocolate and vanilla. So much flavour, so good. Two flavours will run you 5 bucks, while one flavour is just over 4 - very fairly priced (I would probably pay a little more).
In short, my mind was blown and I'm going to become obese. -

Delicious chocolate this close to my house is DANGEREUX!
The new Soma location has an absolutely beautiful interior. There are a few nice plush stools and bar counter right at the front so you can sit your coffee in comfort and watch people pass by along King Street.
They pull a nice espresso here and had an extensive coffee menu.
I was seriously tempted by the ice cream but my willpower was strong so I sadly have nothing to report yet on whether it is good or not.Listed in: Sugar Rush

The second out-post of this Toronto chocolate institution has just opened. With a chocolate lab in the back and some seats for the show, West-enders can now more easily enjoy their sweets and caffeine.
The shop is similar in style to the Distillery location, but definitely more geared towards the area, offering sandwiches and baked goods in addition to their cocoa treats.
They're stocking coffee from 49th, so I'll be by again soon! -

Well I didn't think the newest Soma could be as nice as the original but I was wrong! Love the shop front, love the decor, love the similarities to the Distillery Baby, knew I'd love the chocs and icecream. My coffee was divine, the stools were so comfy - need I go on? I'm beyond impressed.
Amazingly it looks like it belongs on the street for decades and drips in coolness.
I admire the Soma people big time as the make running a perfectly tuned business look so easy!! -

This place is quite neat.... Many variety of chocolate to choose from...
My sister and I tried it out a couple of weeks ago. She ordered chocolate shooter and I, a iced hot chocolate.
Too bad they dont have soy milk (not conducive for people who are lactose intolerant). Iced hot coco with half milk and half water was not spectacular....
PLEASE OFFER SOY OPTION, for the poor folks who love chocolate but cant tolerate dairy!!! -

The second location of Soma trumps the original in the Distillery mostly due to the fact it's not in the middle of no where. Like the original you can get amazing chocolate, gelato, and hot chocolates. (A shot of melted spicy chocolate is particularly delicious.) The space is beautiful, and a welcome edition to King West. I'm actually surprised I haven't been here more often considering it's so close to my workplace.

My girlfriend suggested I get chocolate from Soma back when I had to bike all the way across town in the blazing heat to get a few bars worth of their delicious chocolate. It was well worth the trip. Now that it's downtown, I have no excuse whatsoever. The chocolate is exciting and rich. The flavors are typically new and surprising, mostly because it's so much more full than typical supermarket chocolate - even fancy supermarket chocolate. It's well worth the visit and I might add, an amazing date spot if you're down on King Street and looking to kill time before or after a show.

I had the chocolate gelato and blueberry/basil sorbetto and they were delicious. I usually hate basil, but the way it mixed with the blueberry gave a subtle, but still noticeable, little kick. The chocolate gelato was rich and creamy.
The server was also very friendly and the decor inside is really nice.
