My mouth is seriously watering just thinking about Soma right now... It's a must visit if you're in the Distillery District! The second you walk through the door you're instantly aware that you've stumbled upon a decadent chocolate haven. The biggest problem is deciding what chocolaty treat you're going to indulge in. Pretty much every time I've been I have gotten the dark chocolate gelato. It's breathtakingly divine!
I've heard really great things about the hot chocolate here as well. Definitely on my list of thing to try if I can ever pry myself away from the gelato counter.
Although the prices are a little high, their products are worth every penny and you shan't be disappointed! -
Review from Yibing Q.
I was a New Yorker visiting Toronto and was set on visiting all the good food places in the city!
We almost did not make it to The Distillery District as it was so out of the way ... and we had to walk for quite a bit in the snowy weather to get there from the nearest subway station.
Firstly, I fell in love with The Distillery District instantly as it was a cozy European-like getaway spot from the city of concrete buildings. Ask around for Building 47 if you are new to the area as it could get quite confusing navigating around the district. Found SOMA finally and I was really excited to try out its Mayan Hot Chocolate.
I knew that it would be spicy ... I took an immediate liking to its spiciness. But three-quarter through the cup, I realised I still preferred the traditional saccharine flavour of hot chocolate drinks. Tried the almond minibar ... it was average. I do not think it was that premiere chocolate as its chocolates were made out to sound.
However, this place is still worth a visit as it has a charming old-school interior design (converted from a distillery district building) and its chocolate making laboratories are open for public viewing! -

The Distillery District is my personal favourite escape when the pressures of the Toronto rat race start to close in on me and SOMA chocolatemaker is one of the reasons why.
SOMA crafts a large variety of very unique chocolate bars, truffles, hot drinks and other treats that there is sure to be something for everyone.
As a dark chocolate lover - I have grown quite fond of the 100% Arcana dark chocolate bar. Though, half the fun of each visit is examining the various bars with unexpected combinations of ingredients that will peak your curiousity.
In the cold winter months, SOMA's famous Spicy Mayan Hot Chocolate is sure to be a welcomed warm-up with a slight ginger kick.
The chocolate is manufactured in-house and the process is visible for all who are visiting.
Whether you are intrigued by the chocolate-making process or just looking for something distinct to satisfy your chocolate-loving taste buds, SOMA is the go-to place and has sucessfully cemented its reputation as such. -
Review from Matthew A.
Amazing chocolate! The Cocoa Latte with 45% cocoa is just wonderful - I would have to say one of my favorites ever (and I have been to the Chocolate show in NYC - my other fav is Michel Cluize for reference). They make their own chocolate. I did not try the individual truffles, so I cannot opine on them. The hot chocolate was very good - I went for the one with milk. It wasn't too overboard like other chocolate places, but you could opt for the shot for an intense experience.

I can't believe I didn't give SOMA 5/5 in my first review. I just had a chai truffle and it was frickin mind blowing! Seriously rad! I bought three truffles from SOMA on the weekend and I've been rationing them. I began with the pistachio truffle a few days back and was totally impressed. Then I tried a caramel with almond one and was floored. But again, the chai is the winner. So good!!! Just go and treat yourself!!!

Review from Dishan W.
Soma is a must visit for probably anyone that lives or visits Toronto. If you don't plan on getting something when you walk in, the chances are high that your going to change your mind before too long.
They have all kinds of exciting chocolate bars such as one with salt and a pepper mixed in, numerous little bags with finger food type snacks as well many other chocolate inspired ideas with some seasonal offerings to be had too (I was once there with all kinds of chocolate Easter bunnies around). When picking out the chocolates, they insist that you don't hold on to them for too long since the heat from your hand will melt the chocolate, as a result they have tiny basket
Then of course you have the mayan hot chocolate and other chocolatey beverages, the mayan was full of rich flavour and a must try, but their other drinks are well done as well so you can't go too wrong.
I also once had their gelato and it was amazing to cool off on a summer's day and I was very lucky to get a seat so I could enjoy it while wafting in the smell of chocolate all around me. And the fact that you can see in to their kitchen is fantastic.
Prices are not too bad considering what you get, and I highly urge you to do yourself a life favour and try something out and pick up something for that chocolate lover in your life as well!Listed in: 30-Day Yelp Challenge

What a nice way to warm up from the cold with a cup of SPICY MAYAN HOT CHOCOLATE. Filled with rich flavour and to my surprise, it's not too sweet.

This is where you should come for a great hot chocolate... or anything chocolate for that matter! Soma is found tucked in one the shop filled aisles of the Distillery District. It's easy to miss because the door ain't large, but what you'll find inside is a chocoholics dream.
The handmade chocolate bars and other chocolate delights are all crafted in store and by hand. They have the machinery and equipment on site for customers to witness inside their chocolate laboratory.
The prices range. The chocolate is the star and is priced as so. Chocolate bars are 7-10 dollars each and also come in many flavours. The gelato and drinks are very reasonable at 4-5 bucks.
I tried their famous Spicy Mayan hot chocolate with steamed milk. It was one of the best cups of HC I've ever had. Smooth, creamy, chocolaty, and a hint of spice that creeps in the back of the throat for that extra kick.
What blew my mind was their blueberry and basil gelato. This stuff was out of this world. The best gelato flavour I've ever had, the combination is genius. This is a big statement because I live in little Italy.
I fell in love with the Distillery District and Soma was one of the reasons. -

We walked by once and we were able to smell the chocolates from the outside. We didn't go in... but on our next trip to the Distillery, we made sure to visit!
THE LINE WAS SO LONG!!!!!
We had two scoops of their gelato, pistachio and almonds & vanilla (I think). They were both amaaazzzinngg... I couldn't pick my favourite.
My boyfriend was curious about the chocolate-covered cherries, so we tried them. They were yummy :) :) Thought they were raisins at first.. -
Review from Jess C.
I was a little disappointed to be honest because I had been looking forward so much to Soma! The chocolates are high quality, but the price tag is even higher. Bars of chocolate are like $8! Sheesh...
For me, the truffles were a little too soft and the caramels a little too hard. The dried cherry chocolates weren't bad, but they should have selected juicier cherries.
Soma serves up some great chocolates, but beware of the price tag, and don't forget to pick up some gelato in their store. Yum! -
Review from Sonali B.
Before going to Toronto we did serious research and decided upon visiting The Distillery District, we'd go to Soma. Why? I am a chocolate fiend. A maniac. Good chocolate is always worth the trip.
And Soma more than delivered on great chocolate, lots of samples, amazing service and the BEST gelato I have had in a long time.
When you walk into Soma, you're greeted by people who know what they're talking about. Whether you stick to classics or are looking for something more exciting than a bar of milk chocolate, Soma is the place to be. It's a great place to sample different chocolates, sip on reach and creamy (and slightly spicy and bitter) Mexican Hot Chocolate, and buy gifts for people that you say you'll give but will secretly eat on your way out of the door.
We had a few scoops of gelato after 15 minutes of indecisive choosing and trying sample after generous sample. The ladies were more than happy to oblige and I was happy that they were in a good mood because I was going to get as much of Soma as I possibly could. We swore we'd come back to Soma before returning home but we couldn't make it back. Needless to say, I loved it beyond words and wish there was a location in Michigan. Even my lactose intolerant and non-chocolate obsessed BF enjoyed his creamy scoop of gelato and samples of chocolate. He said it was worth any tummy ache he may get later and we fought over the melted remains of the gelato like crazy fiends before throwing out the paper cup. We left with a bag full of truffles and no plans to eat anything else for a while...unless we could go to Soma one more time before heading back to our hotel! -

OMG Soma is sooooo delish. And also sooo expensive. Well, not as expensive as some places but I couldn't buy something everyday from Soma. I'd get broke very fast, especially since I've loved everything I've tried there so far!
On my latest visit on July 2nd, we tried the Dulce de Leche Gelato & Burnt Honey Gelato. Melt in your mouth heaven! And me having a sensitive stomach for rich foods, etc, I didn't get sick. We also bought the little bags of cookies: Bones of the Dead (ugh why call it that??) which are Hazelnut cookies with the texture of Biscotti, Chocolate Shortbread cookies, Dark chocolate cookies (shaped like macaroons!) & some almond/chocolate bark. Anyway, long story short, they are the best chocolate maker I know of in Toronto! -

Omgosh this place smells like heaven when you walk in the door!
I didn't even know this place existed until we made a trip down to the Distillery District with the strict intention of going to the Mill Street Brew Pub. But, once we saw this place, well, we just had to go in. Of course, it was REALLY busy inside, which is understandable considering the awesome and enticing smell of chocolate. They offer so many different types of chocolate items with differing amounts of cacao and tasty hot drinks as well.
We bought one of the dark chocolate bars with almonds and the truffles, both were so good that I cannot wait to visit Toronto again to buy more. These go lovely with wine, just a tip. Service wasn't too bad considering how busy the place was and, like others mentioned, the prices are a little higher but it's good quality. I will be stopping by here again when I'm in town - yum yum! -
Review from Grace Y.
Amazing. Overpriced- but you're buying cocoa products and not waxy Hershey bars. I spent $7+ on my spicy bar but it was the best $7 I spent on chocolate in a long time. And since a little bit goes a long way, $7 might be all you need to stay happy for awhile.

O-M-G... Before my yelping days, I was loving the Spicy Mayan Hot Chocolate drink SO much, that "Soma" seemed to be the trigger name... for me to have verbal diarrhea about this (previously $3.50) cheap direct drink from the heavens.
Everything else there, is ok. Good quality, but one pays for it.
Try Try Try the Spicy Mayan drink.
If you want to replicate it, google "spicy hot chocolate recipe". For ex, one site that you'll find is:
http://allrecipes.com/...
Everything else, is similar to Godiva.
If you're reading this, and it's summertime, try their gelato. Yum!Listed in: Best of's :)

Soma is one of my favorite places in Toronto. I'm not a huge sweets/chocolate fan but if the craving ever hits me I make the trip to this place to stock up. First off, the merchandise is expensive but i truly believe it's for a good reason. the quality is top notch and you will always pay more for something finer. That being said, I find it evens out in that the chocolate lasts me a long time. For instance, I purchased a hot chocolate mix in December that I still have at 60% full. You only need a small amount to satisfy for the flavoring is so strong.
Some of my favorites from Soma include the chocolate bark, candied ginger dusted with milk chocolate (delicious!), the various dark chocolates infused with fruit (these last a long time) and of course their hot chocolate. I recommend the hot chocolate variety pack which includes all their hot chocolate mixes. My personal favorite is the Mayan Hot Chocolate mix which has an element of spice to it. It's perfect for the winter but also enjoyable in the summer as an addition to an iced coffee drink or dessert.
There are SO many possibilities with soma's chocolate. you can incorporate them into other foods, make new drinks or bake them into a cake. What I love is that the chocolate is not that over-processed crap you get elsewhere that is so sweet it makes you sick. this is real, pure chocolate that tastes as it should.
The prices are worth it, the chocolates are worth it, the drinks are worth it. I have yet to check out the gelato but I've heard countless times it's amazing. The area isn't bad either. If anyone has read the book "Chocolat" soma will remind you of it. Wonderful! -
Review from Aviva S.
This place is famous for the spicy Mayan Hot Chocolate. I couldn't try it because my tongue can't handle anything spicy but the idea is brilliant. Anything Mayan-related is ultra cool.
The store is small and charming yet busy. There are some awesome unique chocolates like the Costa Rican Milk Chocolate (yum!) and some you can get in any other chocolate shop.
My favourite aspect is the lovely personable workers. The man who chuckled as I shuffled around my stuffed pocket purse for money and thanked me for exact change, you made my day.
Give it a visit :) -

Ohhhhhh be still my beating heart! I seriously like this place, in fact I would happily visit there everyday if I could! Dark side of the mug hot chocolate is perhaps my favourite thing, rich and delicious.
Just tried the gellato and please please try the lemon sour cream and dark chocolate sorbet...almost orgasmic!
The 100% cocoa bean bar is something else and if you love dark chocolate it is a must try! -

Perhaps a little biased because I'm seriously in love with chocolate. Very cool to see the bags and bags of beans and the old (yet still functioning) press/grinder. I also like that you can see into the gelato laboratory. I only wish it was a better kept secret, because every time I've been here it's been extremely crowded, long line-ups, nowhere to sit.
I've tried their truffles here - an extremely nice gift from a friend. They are definitely on the pricey side, but sometimes we all need to indulge. I was hoping I would have enough self-control to pace myself, but I devoured all 9 pieces in one sitting. Actually, I shared 2 of them, so I only scarfed down 7 of them. I generally like to share, but I kinda wish I hadn't. I think I could eat 50 truffles in one sitting and still not be sick of them.
The other fabulous item I have tried here is the spicy mayan hot chocolate. Fantastic! I've tried to make my own spicy hot chocolate at home and failed miserably - a little too spicy!!! This beverage is perfect on a cold day. I especially enjoy the spicy aftertaste - just enough kick to make it interesting, but not enough to choke you. The richness of the chocolate makes me want to drink litres and litres of this stuff.
I would love to spend more time in here browsing their other popular items, but I couldn't handle the crowds! I'll have to try again on a weekday.
I will also be back in the summer to try their gelato. -

Soma Chocolatemaker makes me feel like I am in heaven!
I am glad that dark chocolate has a lot of antioxidants is good for me (reason I will buy chocolate for my own consumption) and will put me in a good mood (reason that others will be buying chocolate for me!)
The prices of the prepackaged chocolate of so many different varieties are so reasonable priced... great to get some for anyone as gifts!
Spicy Mayan Chocolate ($4.19 tax in) really hit the spot on this chilly Sunday afternoon. A combination that will fulfil my spicy side and my chocolaty urges... Not over-sweetened but with just the right kick to wake up my senses!

I love this place. Everything in here is delicious. You definitely can't go wrong. I love chocolate and this is by far my favourite place to go for anything chocolate. Better than Godiva, Eitelbach, etc.
The chocolate is a little expensive but you're paying for quality so that's fine by me.
The gelato is delicious and so creamy smooth. I can't say enough good things about this place!
They also have a location on King St. West. -

Yowzers!!! I received a few truffles as a gift and I am blown away!!!! These were the best chocolates I have ever tasted in my life. I tried the balsamic and olive (I think) truffles. Wow. I am not a chocolate connoisseur but my two European friends (one who lived in Switzerland) tell me this is a wonderful place for chocolates.
I am not sure how much each truffle cost but I am sure it was expensive. Would I splurge on them myself? Probably not ... unless I won the lottery. But, they would make a great gift for someone you love. -

Mmmm mmm mmm.
What a lovely place to stop, rest and indulge while wandering through a patch of the not so densely populated Distillery area. Stepping inside here immediately brought back memories of the Jacques Torres experience - good thing you can read about here http://www.yelp.com/bi.... Damn cold outside, walk in and blam! Chocolate factory with awesome truffles specialty drink menu, that's what I'm talking about.
I picked five truffles to gobble up: mayan, douglas fir, balsamic vinegar, bergamot, and olive oil. Washed them down with a bicerin and mayan hot chocolate. My truffles in order of fave to ok: bergamot, douglas fir, balsamic, mayan, olive oil. Bergamot is tea-like (black tea like earl grey) and delicious! I bought a box of ten to take home. Douglas fir is the most unique, actually tastes like a tree smells, very good if you like that sort of thing (I enjoyed it). Balsamic is a little tangy, appropriately, and was the hubsters fave. Mayan could have been stronger for sure, and olive oil just got lost in the chocolate.
Drinks: I never had a Bicerin before, and I liked this a lot! This is an espresso and chocolate combo, different than a mocha. Mayan/spicy hot chocolate thing, while very hyped up, is not all that amazing. If this is the very first time you have spicy hot chocolate, ok I get it. But if you have it elsewhere, say Jacques Torres, you will be disappointed. I got mine with milk, which is the same as how J.T. makes it, but this one was surprisingly watery and not strong at all. I imagine you have to get it straight as a shot (they also sell it this way) to get the full effect, but then it's all gone too fast!
Truffles were around $2 a pop an drinks were maybe $3.75 or something, I don't remember exactly but that's the neighborhood. -

Probably my favorite place to take friends and family visiting Toronto...no visit to the Distillery District is complete without Mayan Hot Chocolate. I promise you won't ever forget the experience - there is nothing like it.
I'm not really a chocolate snob but it's hard to settle for Laura Secord after you try some of the best SOMA has to offer. What's more, some of the strange-sounding ingredients REALLY work - e.g. balsamic truffle.
I had the chance to interview Dave and Cynthia (owners) about a year ago and I've come to love this place even more since I've learned all about their chocolate factory concept and their interest in using ethical cocoa beans. You won't find any butterfly truffles here - this place has a totally unique, rustic quality that keeps me coming back for more. SOMA is really a labor of love and I can taste the difference! -

5 stars for their Spicy Mayan Hot Chocolate - just warms you up from head to toe on a cold wintry Toronto day.

I LOVE Soma - from the smell of roasting nuts as you enter the shop to the super happy staff - it's a thrill - and that's before I've even chewed a morsel! I love the Vanilla Icecream and practically all the chocolates so no point mentioning them individually. Last summer they were offering a Stilton Cheese and Walnut Icecream - feeling madly adventurous ( for me) I ordered it and it was just so lovely. Everytime I go in now I search to see is it in the freezer but no joy.
So often I see people come into Soma, look disheartened at the throngs of peolpe in front of them, turn and leave. Empty handed. It's enough to make you drop a tear for them. My advice is get in line folks, it moves pretty fast and it's so worth it!!!!!! -

As a Chocolate Shop it's definitely a destination to review some interesting Ganaches, Candies, Cookies, and Drinks. Surprise Surprise, I got the Spicy Mayan Chocolate($4+). 3.5 *Star*
It had a tingly feeling behind the throat that is Mayan Spicy but it's weird it gives an instant kick and goes away until the next sip rather than building up the HEAT which as a personal preference gives me more excitement like Peri-Peri does.
2 birds with 1 stone, I got 49th Parallel Epic Espresso(1lb/$16.00) Beans here too which was convenient. The 4 ladies working their shifts were nice greeting all the Tourist and Newcomers. I actually saw many people come in and leave without any purchases as they browsed. Ladies used their DIET excuse while the Guys used their WALLET excuse.Listed in: 3.5 ***Stars***, Desserts - Western, T.O.urist in Town

Really unique chocolate flavors. I had a balsamic chocolate, which was kind of neat. I wouldn't get it again, but it was a new experience to taste that mix of flavors. I also had a salted caramel, which was delicious.
The shop itself is a haven for gift buyers. Lots of chocolate bars, hot chocolate mixes, and other convenient gifts for friends or yourself.
You can sip your hot chocolate while watching the chocolate making process through the large windows into the "factory" part of the store. It's definitely worth a visit if you're in the Distillary District. -
Review from Greg B.
Delicious chocolate, but not much to do or see here as it is just a small shop in the old Distillery. The chocolate is very good, but also appropriately pricey, so I struggle to give it anything over 3 stars. I recommend the dark chocolate with sea salt, my favorite!

Not for the faint of heart but for those of us working our way up the dark chocolate ladder % by % the Arcana 100% chocolate is 100% cocoa bean, no bullshit. Life changing. Zero sugar yet not bitter... unlike anything anywhere.
I'm taking my time with her, morsel by morsel. Soon I'll get the remainder of my basket of single origins from all over Latin America and giant wafter shaped, hazelnut packed discs. -
Review from Joe H.
Now that it's around the holiday time, the distillery district has a nice little "village" of shops and vendors which line the streets of the district. Everything from pies, to sausage to treats are available.
Especially if it's a cold night, the one stop you have to make is Soma Chocolate Maker. We actually had to wait outside to get in because the store was at capacity. Why you ask? Because a nice cheery part of the holidays is a nice cup of hot chocolate.
Soma makes a pretty mean hot chocolate. They have two varieties; a mayan version which is a medley of spices such as cinnamon and cayenne, and then a dark chocolate version. These beverages can be ordered with steamed milk, or just in the concentrated version which is a shot of liquidy chocolate goodness.
Besides the liquid chocolate, there is also a giant selection of storemade chocolates. I highly recommend the pop-rock truffles, it's litterally how it sounds and it is also as amazing as it sounds. They also have a nice sampler pack that makes an amazing gift (cough cough girlfriend/date) if you want to see which chocolate there you actually like.
Soma is definately one of the gems of the distillery district, and I look forward to visiting everytime I'm there.
PS. when it's cold out... hot chocolate becomes not so hot and freezes... Don't worry, if you have no shame you can use your finger to get the rest of it out... check! -

I've been going to Soma a few times a year (for an extra-special treat or a gift for someone nuts for chocolate), and I've always found their wares to be super-high quality and yummy. The price point is high, but the expense is reflected in the taste explosions you'll have! I also like seeing the chocolate factory in motion!!
I've subtracted a star in my rating because:
Sometimes Yelp can ruin an otherwise okay taste experience through hype. Very rarely does this happen, but when it does it's a major let-down. This happened today with the Spicy Mayan Hot Chocolate. I read way too many amazing reviews - and when the drink hit my lips, I think I let out an "aww". It was just okay. I mean, if I got it from Starbucks, I would have been like "this isn't bad", but my standard for Soma is higher. It was pretty watery and not chocolaty at all.
So go to Soma, buy some amazing chocolate, and if you decide to try the Mayan Hot Chocolate be forewarned: Public Enemy were dead on about believing the hype. -

I believe in a God: EK-CHUAH, the Mayan god of Cocoa. He probably blesses Soma, because this place could not exist without a touch of magic.
Once you enter, you are surrounded by the smell of handmade chocolate. I know it's probably hard to choose what you want among all the different flavours and choices, but for a serious cocoa lover like me, I already knew: the astonishing 100% arcana bar.
If you tried the Lindt 99%, forget it. Arcana 100% is different. It's intense and perfect, it's nothing I've ever tried before, and it makes clear that Soma KNOWS chocolate from heart and makes it with love and passion and how it should be made.
If you think 100% is too much for you, don't fear, there are plenty of options for all tastes. Every single person will be delighted there. My truffle of choice was the spicy Mayan Dome. But, you know, I'm pretty sure I'll have to try each one of them at least once. At least. -

Absolutely delicious. I completely regret not buying boxes and boxes of the fleur de sel caramel chocolates to gift at Christmas to take home with me to Chicago.
I had the Seville orange peels dipped in dark chocolate, and three truffles: butter caramel + dark chocolate + fleur de sel salt, douglas fir dipped in dark chocolate, and pop rocks in dark chocolate. All are recommended. -

With an average of 4.5 stars from 54 reviewers, how can you not try this place out? Having read about the hype, I decided to go find out myself. Of course, I ordered the renowned 'Spicy Mayan Chocolate' (One size). It was good, I've only ordered hot chocolate 2 times outside, because usually it's dissapointing or tastes gross. Weird. SO ANYWAY, yeah, too spicy for my throat. SORRY, GUYS! I'll try the non-spicy hot chocolate next time. Not bad, though. Definately not any hot chocolate I've ever tasted before with a pungent kick.
PS: The atmoshphere was laid back with funky music that made you want to take off your clothes and swim in hot chocolate. (That's really the only way I can describe the music...)

but serisouly, this place makes good chocolate. It's the only place that i've found 100% content chocolate as well.
