YUM! My husband and I were looking for somewhere to go and eat in Steveston Village by the water. We'd had their fish & chips over the summer and it was delish so we thought we'd go in and eat. OMG, I had the crab stuffed canneloni and it was AMAZING! Very fresh and homemade (I asked) ingredients and you could sure tell. My husband couldn't resist having the fish & chips again and he loved it.
The manager was our server and he was excellent.
I can't wait to go back and eat there again! -

At lunch today, I told BH this place is all about location, location, location...before reading Larry's review. It was another amazing sunny spring day in Vancouver so obviously everybody had to be out and about. Sockeye has one of the best patios in Steveston for sure.
Badly craving fish and chips, we narrowed our choices to Pajos and Sockeye City (having been to the patio across it one too many times). I briefly compared prices (based on Sockeye's takeout window) and their 2-pc halibut and chips was $3 cheaper than Pajos so we figured, alright let's give this a try. Turns out, they have different pricing for takeout and dine-in. When somebody serves you the halibut and chips, it's actually $19. I settled for the 2-pc Cod and Chips ($15) instead with a cup of seafood chowder and a glass of cheap pinot gris; BH went for the calamari salad and beer.
The fried things were initially done well...and I say "initially" because they came nicely crisp until after 10 minutes. I like savouring my food so by the end of it, the beer batter didn't rise to the occasion.. I didn't see much fish either to be honest. The fillet was a sliver compared to Pajos. Not much good to be said about the chowder. Bits and pieces of salmon, potatoes and carrots in some gloopy, flour-congealed stock base. Not worth the $6 they were charging for it. The pinot gris was chilled and refreshing but nothing spectacular; basically got what I paid for. BH's calamari was surprisingly perfectly done and yummy. Fantastic atmosphere and wharf views but put them in a not-so-fantastic location, with the food they're serving, the place would close down. Nothing special.
Service was fine. Literally, just fine. Nothing memorable, we had a gracious hostess but I detected a hint of attitude from our server. I especially liked the part where she came over and asked how everything was tasting...to my husband, not to me. Guess they always assume the man's paying. He almost always does but it's always a treat seeing the shocked look on a server's face when they realize the lady they've ignored is the one paying. Good for her she got it right at lunch today.
Wow, this review is really boring, and I'm the one writing it. I promise my reviews are usually a lot better than this, but it does accurately reflect the experience we had. Meh. I better end this now. -

$80 for a delish seafood meal
$6 Caesar salad...nothing special. Small but decent given the price. Could have used slightly less dressing. BTW, they describe the salad as a Mexican caesar...so I had to ask what the difference was between a regular caesar vs their's and apparently its nothing. They described it as mexican because caesar salads originated from Mexico. Yep...go and wikipedia it!
$12 steamed mussels in tomato basil...omg so delish! Had to ask for more bread to soak up the sauce!!!! You may even wanna double order cuz its so good. Light but still flavorful. I had this as my meal and I was full. So a good portion for those lighter eaters.
$26 for pan fried salmon, perfect size and the mash potato was yum. The veggies grilled nicely, with a little crunch still (not soggy like so many places do it these days).
$29 bottle of malbec...can never go wrong with a malbec
The atmosphere is kind of strange though....I felt like I was in a retirement home. Bright lights, country cottage decor with seascape inspiration. They need to dim the lights more, put on some mood music and create a more romantic trendy atmosphere....well that's what I was hoping for anyway. But its probably intend to be more family oriented since there were some kids eating happily away. And they didn't seem to mind when a little one ran around the restaurant.
The service is friendly and attentive. One thing that was interesting was that when we left that Friday night, it was only about 830pm...but some new customers came in but they were told the kitchen was closed already. I guess on a slow night during off-peak season, they'll shut down early. So just FYI. -

Another place that looked touristy, but we ended up having a lovely dinner on the patio. It is great being pleasantly surprised.
Raw oysters were absolutely fresh and were like absorbing sea essence. Seafood pasta was amazing, perfectly cooked in a light sauce with plump shrimp, clams and fresh tomato and basil, with garlic toasts. The drinks were good and supercheap ($5).
We had the worst service I've had in a long time. The sign outside said Honey Wheat Mojito, and when I asked what that was, she replied, "Oh, I don't know, I just got back from vacation." Turns out it was 2 different drink specials. Duh...
I LOVE Richmond-it is a strange mix of farmland, coastal wharf village, china town and wine country. Very bizarre and wonderful. Loved the local farm house with the best community garden I've ever seen.
The international Buddhist temple is worth a trip in itself. It is beautiful, breathtaking and FREE. I was buzzing for an hour after my visit.Listed in: Canada

So after a short stroll through the jolly Steveston village, company and I decided to grab some food. We came here, a restaurant right on the water pier, right above where Steveston's local fishermen and their families sell their fish. The restauarant's high enough as to not get any strong and fishy whiffs, don't worry. There was a take-out area, but this didn't offer beer, and though there's a liquor store on the pier, it was just too awkward to do it all seperately. So we hit the patio!
The food here smells and tastes fantastic. I had the dungeness crab cannelloni with tiger prawns, in the creamiest tomato sauce. I was kinda bummed to get charged 3$ for bread, which should've come for all that delicious sauce, but oh well. My friends tried the two piece beer battered cod with fries for about $10 and it was light and the pieces were huge. Beer's $5 a glass, $24/pitcher. Had a sort of shifty waiter, but it's alright. If you come at the right time, the most wonderful classical guitarist will be playing for the crowd.Listed in: Where to Eat?

Our group of four diners found all the dishes overcooked, even after one (haddock) was sent back to the kitchen.
If you know what Paella in Spain or Palma de Mallorca is like, don't order Sockeye City Grill's paella -- we could not detect any saffron aroma. Also, the dish is red with tomato paste, not yellow with saffron.
Complaining to the management didn't do anything.
The food at the nearby Blue___ was much better. -

Although the halibut fish n chips were good, the portions were much too small for the price. My friend and I ended up eating the complimentary bread AFTER we finished our meal because we were still hungry (and I should mention that neither of us are unusually large people with large appetites). You just don't get what you pay for here. Dave's has much tastier food with better portions and at literally half the price.
I should also mention that the bathrooms were rather dirty (urine on the seat, etc.). Not what you would expect from this sort of restaurant. -

Very nice location. How can you beat this? It's all about location location location. Hmmmmmm could they really be wrong? I hate to say this, but In the past, having food here was ok. almost "ho hum", but a repeatable experience worth trying again. You know, give it another try. it'll be better next time.
This time with a group of us for lunch on a day that wan't busy at all.
The food was below "ho hum" Below "Eeeeek! methinks not!".
Ever had partially soggy fish and chips where the edges of the batter may be crispy but the important part of the batter that surrounds the fish is soft and chewy? The oil must have been old since the fish batter was fried to a dark brown instead of a golden crispy colour. Limpid instead of vibrant and showcasing what Steveston Fish and Chips is all about!
I had asked for something different than on the menu which was a piece of Halibut and one salmon.
OK I wanted my own custom combo. Everybody other vendor in town does it, don't they?
Salmon was about half the size of the halibut. What's this? Oh and the salmon was overcooked and dry inside. You have to practically boil a fish in oil to get this effect.
This is how it works. When using old oil it loses it's effective properties to heat up to the right frying tempurature and results in longer cooking time. If the oil is very old, then it barely fries and the result is mushy brown combination of fish and batter.
The fries were better, which I did indulge in 3 or 4 pieces but left the rest. Why? I asked for a salad. and after asking for it, when it finally came, it was drenched in salad dressing. Nice dressing, but the leaves were soggy from all that nice vinegrette!
We did comment that the coleslaw was very good. I was a little disheartened with the overall experience because we had hoped to highlight an out of town coworker with the experience of having fresh fish and chips in Steveston. Cmon now! You mean you can get bad fish and chips in Steveston? Impossible you say? well......
but I do always like to leave on a positive note. The salmon sandwhich looked great and very healthy. I can only imagine the reason why they are stil ln business is simply because of one thing. No sorry three things....location, location, location.
It had to be an off day for the chef.
There is so much potential here and in saying that, this is gem waiting to happen. Hopefully I'll hear great things from future diners! -

Best fish and chips I've had yet, possibly because I've never had salmon and chips before. Definitely decent.

We popped by when in the area for a walk near the water, and decided to warm up here. We ordered the chowder which was creamy and satisfying, and I had a 1 pc halibut and fries and the boyfriend had the crab cake benny. Mine was served on a weird-looking glass fish shaped plate, but the fish itself was decent- nicely beer battered. Overall, not bad.

We had a really nice lunch here today. The service was prompt and friendly and the food was delicious. A couple of us had the cod fish 'n' chips. The fish was perfectly battered (not too heavy) and moist and flaky inside. It was very fresh, no detectable fishy taste at all. The accompanying coleslaw and fries were great too. My father-in-law ordered the seafood tagliatelle, a pasta dish with clams, mussels and scallops. He loved it. My mother-in-law also really enjoyed her mango and chicken salad. I wouldn't hesitate to come back for another meal.
