I loved my visit at Social. The food was wonderful! I know it says all over the website that it is a small plates restaurant, but they don't emphasize that enough at the table. The meals are REALLY small. Amazingly delicious, but REALLY small.  I am a 27 yr old tall thin girl, I could have eaten 3 entrees. Instead I ate one, and we shared dessert. I was still hungry the rest of the night :(. Their chocolate mousse dessert was a lingering memory that kept me going.  So yum.
The only mistake I made (I think) was to order the wine they had paired with my entree. Here is why:
They pair a flight to your entree, however if you eat an appetizer and several entrees, it won't necessarily match with everything.
It is supposed to add to the "experience", but if you don't like that type of wine, it will not make anything better.
I ordered Rhone wines, not fully aware of what those were. I should have played it safe and ordered what I know I like, because I ended up stuck with 3 small glasses of wine that I didn't like.  They didn't enhance my food no matter what the chef thought, because I thought they were gross.  (Again, I fully take blame, not the chef, I am sure some people like those wines.) I am just trying to illustrate the point that you should choose what you like, not necessarily what the menu pairs with it.
I am eager to go back and try it again with more entrees and different wine! (Yet still more of that chocolate mousse....woo-eee!)

I was very disappointed with my experience this evening at Social. The food was underwhelming and the service was slow and rude. Our night starting with the host walking us to a table that wasn't set at which point she asked us to stand in the middle of the restaurant while they prepared the table. Then the server seemed annoyed that she had to serve my husband and I, like we were inconveniencing her or something...a bit strange. She did have a table of 10 that she was serving at the same time, but that is really not my fault. The food is small plate tapas, which I was surprised to find in Charleston. I live in San Francisco and the small tapas trend came and went a few years ago...had I known ahead of time that Social was small plates "to share" then I would have chosen another place all together. We had the chicken liver pate (decent, but nothing special), white bean bruschetta (meh), flank steak (lackluster), puttanesca pizza (just okay), and Thai spring rolls (burnt and oily). I ordered a wine taste for my appetizers and had planned on a glass of pinot noir to drink with the steak and pizza but our server was hard to come by. It's too bad since we were ready to try out a number of the wines...can't try them if you can't find your server to order them for you.

I was really bummed about wasting a night of my short trip to Charleston on this restaurant. I would definitely not come back.

Conveniently located downtown on East Bay, Social has the vibe and aesthetics of one of those "see and be seen" establishments. But aside from being a "good looker," this restaurant and wine bar is full of delicious substance -- we visited (and ate) twice during our six-day vacation to Charleston.

The beer list is seemingly overlooked (nothing really all that interesting on draft, but several 22s available), but the cocktail and wine lists were impressive. On our first meal, we ordered a few cheeses for the table -- the plates were set up very nicely --and a couple pizzas. The boyfriend and I also split an heirloom tomato salad (oh, how I miss tomato season... LOVE). We all fell in instant-love with the mushroom pizza; the Alsatian (topped with bacon, edam cheese and creme fraiche) was a second favorite. The vegetable pizza (ordered on our second visit) was not as interesting as I hoped.

Service was pleasant, but slow -- especially so sitting on the restaurant side on our first meal (we sat in the bar on our second). The hostess did inform of us of potential service issues when she sat us (due to a computer problem or something), but even when the restaurant cleared out, we couldn't figure out the lapse of a missing pizza when we received three others... and then a long wait for running the check. Also, one of the mushroom pizzas was decidedly more "cooked" than the other (read: burned and crispy); another seemed almost undercooked.

Overall, Social was a great hangout for both happy and dinner hours! Be sure to check in and take advantage of their mobile check-in offer (for me, it was a free glass of La Bubbly champagne).

Very friendly bartenders that are full of suggestions for wine or other cocktails. Went with a friend that really enjoys wine, although I'm more of a martini person, but the bartenders made me 2 special drinks from me explaining what I like. The atmosphere is great too.

Was referred here by a server at another restaurant after gorging myself with food for 2 hours and looking for a chill spot with good beer. Oh did we find it. AMAZING place. DJ on the second level playing some great house music that was perfect for the setting. The drink list might be a little daunting to some if you aren't prepared. I was looking for a place with beer. They focus primarily on wine. But don't let that turn you away. An entrepreneur page of just dogfish head beer?! Yes please. Last bottle of Miles Davis Tribute. I was in heaven. Kudos to tge owner. Well trained staff, amazing ambience. I will def be back to eat. I wish I could've stayed longer to look through their wine cellar and pick something out. Sadly I had to leave in a hurry. Next time social... Next time.

Great location, is downtown. I was not impressed at all with the service. The waitress acted like she was doing us a favor to wait on us. We have been to several of the surrounding restaurants, and very pleased with the service. The positive thing about Social, it the window where you can watch the chefs at work. While we waited 45 minutes for a dessert. Wine trio is a great selection.

I love Charleston, what is there not to love...and places like Social make Charleston what it is, a great wine and food town. As a huge California wine gal the wine list didn't appeal to me, but their cocktails was fantastic and the small bits were yummy yummy yummy! When you go, get their Spinach, Artichoke & Roasted Tomato Dip. The wood fired pizzas are delicious too, and I am very picky about my pizza.

What makes an experience is always the people, and April, our server, was wonderful. She was attentive, friendly and went above and beyond to make our girls evening a fun one.

I will be back to try the Ponzu & Truffle Tuna Sashimi!

This is definitely a hot-spot in downtown. The restaurant was littered with people on dates and groups of girls dressed up for a night out (take note, men). The inside is romantic and swanky with an energetic vibe. Good wine selection, reasonably priced.

The food is tapas-style- it's delicious but the plates are extremely small. I know this is typical of "tapas" but when you're a hungry girl like myself and it takes 3-4 of these to fill you up, that can leave a dent in the ole' wallet quickly. Don't go hungry but do sample one or two of their well-prepared dishes (try a pizza- both the eggplant and the pesto were fantastic).

Service was on the slow side and it was hard to eat with friends when the dishes trickled out of the kitchen- I didn't get my entree until my friends were done eating.

Try Social for drinks and a snack- get dinner somewhere else.

I've been to Social a few times but can never bring myself to feel impressed by the service, atmosphere, or food. The pizza is terrible (very thin, but not in a desirable way- its too crunchy (usually completely burned at least on half of it) and falls apart completely with one bite, not to mention, is very lacking in the toppings. I've never felt so unsatisfied from a pizza before. The wine was fine, but it was not what I had ordered. Oh well.

Our server didn't seem to know what they were out of: everything I ordered, from the glass to the type of pizza, was not available- however I was only informed of this much later after having had ordered, which not only causes a delay in trying to decide on something else, but on the actual arrival of my drinks and food (compared to everyone else at the table, who were awkwardly waiting for my food to arrive so they could eat as well). If that server had been aware of what they were out of, I would have been able to order sooner and not have to wait what seemed to be an excessive amount of time after everyone else had received their food and drinks. This being said, our server was not very friendly, either.

The atmosphere could be better- tall ceilings and nice decor but not really my crowd- and while I wouldn't mind it if I was with a group of friends, I would not be the first person to suggest this as a place to meet.

Our wonderful server made our bachelorette dinner party a huge success!  She helped us choose items such as the chicken lettuce wraps, eggplant pizza, and tempura shrimp, all of which were delicious!

The wine selection was great and reasonably priced.  We enjoyed a $22 bottle of Savignon Blanc...actually make that 6 bottles!  A few desserts capped off the night of delicious food!

The only negative was that the ambient noise was quite loud, which made conversing at our table difficult at times.  The final bill was so inexpensive considering all we ordered.  That, coupled with the yummy food, signals I'd definitely come back again!

We were in town for a weekend getaway, perusing for a place to eat on a Friday and thought Social looked like a good bet. The interior is very modern and the bar was packed, so we put our name in for a table (we had no reservation) and headed to the bar for a drink.

The service at the bar was the first we'd had in Charleston that wasn't friendly - and the wine was nothing to write home about. Then, the hostess came over to tell us that a table was ready - but that we had to eat within an hour since they had reservations coming in at 8:30.

Well... having never had someone put us on a schedule at a nice restaurant (esp. at a tapas place) we were kind of shocked but decided to get a bite to eat anyway. We sat down, started to order with a waiter, when a manager came up and told us there had been a mix up and in fact we were supposed to have another waiter. After that awkward moment we ordered sliders - which came out soggy and cold. That was the last straw - we asked for the check, paid our bill and took off before we wasted any more time or money there. Overall a huge disappointment.

Large open expansive space. Strictly for the ambiance, experience and wine selection. Good full selection of wine from reds, white, sparking and blends. The Huber from Austria is a red, smooth, well balanced and amazing. The Azura-spicy just a hint of berries-the taste is crisp, a well balanced dry and a bit airy. Excellent drink offerings including the Social Butterfly with berry vodka, white grape juice and elderflower liquer with a cava float-smells sweet like candy. Holy. Probably, my new favorite drink of all time. I can't tell you how it excited my taste buds were because on the SB. Its indescribable. Delicate but gently stirring your tongue to heaven. Orange basil mojito with rum hadmuddled orange and mint-sutble and sexy, perfect for a spring day or the hottest of summer nights.

    Service was great!

When the best thing you try is the spinach dip, you know you've got a problem with a restaurant/wine bar merely pretending to be fancy schmancy.

I picked this place via yelp reviews to try while I was visiting a girl friend who had just moved to Charleston.  We made a reservation for a Saturday night, anticipating a good meal and a fun place to start our night.

The person answering the phones and the hostess that seated us both had a lackadaisical attitude to the concept of service.  And in fact, our server did as well.  While I appreciate not being upsold, our server didn't even offer the option of dessert, additional drinks, etc.

But onto the food.  We started off with the spinach dip, and it was, as I mentioned, amazing.  Huge portion, tons of lightly toasted pita for dipping, and a great, rich flavor.  Unfortunately, it was downhill from there.  I ordered a wine flight, which was very nice and reasonably priced, but I was left no menu to know what I was drinking when, or even in what order I should drink them.

The thing that really killed our meal though was the meal itself:  a vegetable pizza, that featured paper thin crust, undercooked squash (still crunchy), and grape tomatoes tossed in such a bitter balsamic that they were nearly impossible to eat.  And it was served room temperature.  It was the kind of meal that I would have sent back, but again....no server to be found!

Lesson learned: this is not the place to go for dinner.  Sit at the bar, order a (couple) wine flights and that spinach dip.  But skip the sit-down service.  It's not worth the attitude.

Okay. I know it is a Wine Bar, so you expect them to have great wine. However the owner and I must have similar tastes as I was so pleased with the selection! A Sparkling Gruner Veltliner? Loved it!!!

This place has a great atmosphere. Not super loud, but a very fun and hip vibe. Lots of beautiful people.

I love the option on the wines by the glass list to do each variety as a flight. I have not seen that elsewhere. Our waitress was GREAT- actually a certified Sommelier. We enjoyed talking with her and her extensive knowledge of wines.

Food! We had the Blanco Pizza, the Trio of Sliders, and the Short Rib. Everything was very good. The cheese on the pizza was amazing. My husband really liked the Chicken and Pork Sliders, and surprisingly enough the Kobe Beef was his least favorite of the 3. The Yukon chips were also GREAT!  The Short Rib ( yes singular) was very good as well. After we got this we realized how expensive it was for 1 short rib. We would have had more, but were stuffed!

    I would absolutely go back.

Places like this will probably not be opening up anywhere in the next few years. When you walk in, you can readily interpret the joint as the product of aggressive entrepreneurial imagination and a super-surplus of capital. They did the place up nicely, though, and they deserve credit for that. The light fixtures, the wine dispensing system, the climate-controlled wine "cellar" with glass walls, all very classy and glitzy.

Although we were not there to eat, I think we wished we had been. The menu was great, and all around us people were devouring interesting and substantial dishes from the bar menu. The fries looked incredible, drenched as they were in a gorganzola fondue and topped with minced scallions.

But we stuck with beer and wine. The wine menu is extensive, and flights are popular there, with four good-sized tastes going for $11-$20 depending on the flight. A glass of wine will cost anywhere from $5-$12. Monday through Friday, they've got spectacular happy hours, with bar food, house red, house white, and several beers, all for $3.

They had three good beers on tap: Ommegang Belgian style, Sweetwater Extra Pale (from Atlanta), and one other that I can't recall.

Service was great, the atmosphere was really slick but also very comfortable, and I'd be back tomorrow if I lived down in cha-town.

Trying to find a delicious but not overly expensive meal in the South was making my partner and I feel like bigger San Francisco food snobs than we ever thought we were.  I don't doubt that there are fantastic expensive restaurants around here, but so far, the moderately priced ones have fallen short of what we were hoping for vacation-quality food.

After being served from a bottle that had clearly been open for a while in Charlotte and passing over the wine list entirely at what otherwise seemed like a promising Charleston restaurant (populated by distinguishably unremarkable California wines), my meal at Social started off with a bang -- a $3 (happy hour) glass of house sauvignon blanc that simply had that special something something I have come to expect of all good wines.

We followed the wine with some $3 happy hour appetizers, all of which were very satisfying.  My partner devoured the yukon chips with blue cheese fondue & scallions while I tried the truffled risotto balls that had been specifically criticized on yelp.  They turned out to be good though not necessarily the best I ever had.  The chicken sate with red curry cream, basil, and coconut rice, however, was pretty much the best I've ever had of anything similar -- and San Francisco has a lot more than a handful of Thai-inspired restaurants.  It was so spot on that we nearly forgot about the sliders which were the reason we had come in the first place (having determined they were the best of all 20-something sliders offered at Taste of Charleston).

We didn't have any dessert but did order $3 glasses of champagne to finish the night which were also clearly not bottom of the barrel despite being cheap.  Total bill before tax and tip was $33 for a full meal for two, but we would have been very enthusiastic about the meal even if we had paid full price for everything.

P.S. The decor was what everyone else has said though my construction eye was sort of delighted at spotting the imperfectly globby caulk at the base of the restroom sinks.  The art was intriguing to the point that I wrote down the artist's name to look him up.

    Tasty small plates!  Dish breakdown:

Short-rib sliders:  Everyone's favorite.  The super sweet marinade for the pork was complimented well by the sheep's milk cheese and pickled onions.

Mushroom and goat cheese pizza:  Also delicious.  The sauteed mushrooms are large and tasty.

Pigs in a blanket.  Unremarkable.  The pastry blanket way overwhelmed the pig.

Fried Calamari Salad:  Good.  Nice to have fried calamari that's not 90% fried and 10% calamari.

Dessert Plates:  We had a thick slice of chocolate cake (meh), a very nutmeggy creme brulee, and rice pudding (by far everyone's favorite).

The wine flights are *very* generous; they aren't kidding when they say you're getting a half-glass.  I'm not a wine genius, and I ended up ordering a very sweet flight of Mediterranean wines.  I wish the menu gave its guests some guidance on the flavors to be expected.

Social's service is good.  Our waitress came by to check on us every few minutes.  We didn't get the crowds referenced by other reviews (we dined on a Wednesday night).

Overall, a good experience.  I'd definitely head back (if just for the sliders).

Probably the best HH I experienced during my stay in Charleston.  The $3 HH sparkling wine was surpringly good.

The margherita pizza crust can be a bit thinner, but at $3, I am not complaining.

The service can be a bit frosty but I will just warm up to the wine instead.

My buddy and I had a ton of good times here, back in the summer of 2007.  Fun, older, employed crowd, and good selection of wine.  At the time, I was on a 'Chimay' kick, and drank Chimay every time I went there.

I've never gotten any food either.

So basically, 4 stars for attractive, friendly girls, and friendly bartenders.

Came here on Fourth of July weekend, so probably not the most typical Social experience.

Big seating area, long bar, great mood lighting, and huge selection of wine and other alcohol. Bar area was super crowded so we sat in the dining area but waited a heck of a long time for anyone to serve us. Service was friendly, but spotty. We ended up walking to the bar when we needed more drinks. Someone didn't make it quite to the bathroom so we were left with a gross puddle in front of the window to the kitchen. Fantastic.

Perhaps I'll come back and give this place another chance, but only during Happy Hour.

Nice selection of wine, can't help but to be suspicious of the wine fridge behind the bar... but our wine was great.

Friendly service with a sort of industrial atmosphere.  When we were there it was a twenty and thirty something after work crowd, that became a bit more of a singles / place to be seen the longer we were there.

I had the shrimp scampi which was delicious.  The noodles tasted fresh and the thai influence was unique and fun.

I also tried my buddies Kobe Sliders and a slice of pizza.  All very tasty.

It gets five stars from me because for the price point it doesn't get much better.

This should really get 3.5 stars.

The atmosphere is great, with really cool back lit wine-bottle silhouettes behind the bar, wine dispensers, as well as a large dining room.  The bar seems to get pretty crowded, but when we went there were plenty of seats in the dining room.

The wine:  There's not an extremely large selection, but they seemed well thought out.  I like flights of wine, which allows for a lot of sampling and food-pairings without spending an exorbitant amount of money.  We tried a couple of flights, with both having a variety of good value wine.

The food:  The best dish of the night, by far, was the short rib sliders.  If you go, these are a must.  They are sweet, tender, and with pickled onions and sheep's milk cheese that complement the short rib very well.  The pizza is mediocre, especially considering the hardware in the kitchen.  With a large wood-fired oven, I was expecting a good crust, but it was average.  They could also stand to upgrade their mozzarella, although the pizza was $3 (happy hour special) so I can't complain too much.  The grilled romaine salad with lemon and feta was quite good, with the charred bits of romaine adding a new dimension to the salad.  The risotto balls (arancini) were not memorable.  If you are going here to eat, I recommend going during happy hour, when everything on the happy hour menu is $3.

If I were to rate it as just a wine bar without the food it would have been better, so if you're just going out for drinks, it's definitely a good place to go.

LOVED IT! My friend and I were wandering around Charleston one day and passed this place with the whole front open so you could sit at the windows and still feel like you were dining al fresco. It's sort of a laid back cosmopolitan lounge feel. They had very nice happy hour drink and small plate specials. We split a plate, then each ordered maybe 2 more, because we enjoyed it so much.

The atmosphere is great. The high table by the open front windows was just what we needed. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Our bill, thanks to the specials, was well within our budget.

My only disappointment was my cheesecake. It was pear something and I was very excited to try it, as I am a pastry chef. It was not very pear-y. But it did taste great, just not what I was expecting, based on the menu description.

    I'd definitely go back.

This is a great wine bar, they have a ton of happy hour specials, to include drinks as well as food specials for only $3. We ordered their infamous yukon chips with blue cheese fondue and chicken sate as well as a couple glasses of their house wines, all for only $12! You can't beat that. They really do have an extensive selection of very interesting wines. I ordered a red flight later, you can choose the already chosen flights or make one yourself for $12-15. We also ordered a margarita pizza ($3) and the trio of sliders, which was really great. We kind of wished there were bigger and more prevalent pieces of basil on the pizza but whaddya gonna do. And the decor inside is hot. Exposed brick and duct work, aubergine-painted wood, and tan walls. Everything was so chic and trendy, hats off to the owners. If we lived locally, this would definitley be our happy hour of choice.

This is a really chill spot to go during the week. They have great Happy Hour specials on drinks and apps. We had the coconut battered onion rings and calamari  (each for $3). I'm not typically a calamari fan, but this was very good. We also enjoyed the $3 glasses of Sauvignon blanc- probably in excess:) This is def a fun place to relax during happy hour and the prices are pretty amazing. I try to go 2-3 times per month. Meet me there and the $3 glass is on me. :)

Came here at 6:00 on a Saturday night with my husband, they told us they were full even though tables were open in the back. They didn't even offer to take our name to wait. It was very strange. So we spent our money elsewhere!

of all the places i visited, i'd have to say social was my favorite in terms of the nightlife and bars, so i'm pretty happy to land the ftr.

crowded as f#$k at the bar, but i was still able to get through and see reasonably prompt service - from a guy dressed as the joker in a nurse's outfit, no less (best costume of the night). fairly typical selection of beers, but a great selection of wines stored at proper temperature and, it looked like, under pressure, behind glass.

away from the bar, there was plenty of seating at comfy tables. the walls feature paintings for sale from local artists which actually displayed some talent in addition to adding to the decor.

the dj was spinning some great tunes up at the second floor/loft/mezzanine level dance floor, but no one was up there. i didn't get it. go dance people. this guy was good.

big, big props for having all the waitresses dress up as french maids on halloween. oui oui, mon cherie.

I heard from the owner on the same day I sent him an email. He sounded surprised but assured me he would take care of the situation. Due to the promptness of his response and the fact that I love everything else about this place I've upped my star rating.

I want to go back and try more wine. We went mostly to eat for a friend's birthday because Tues nights is half price for F&B. We had the risotto fritters, chicken skewers, and two of the pizzas and it was SO good. I'm looking forward to going back and trying some of the wine flights cause they seem like a really good deal.

Great food for a hip, young, crowd.  If you want to avoid loud night-life, steer-clear. . . The atmosphere is extremely lively on weekends.  I love the sliders -Coconut battered onion rings (need I say more?).  The calamari is different (not all fried-also has vegetables) and a favorite also.  It is difficult for me to order anything else, as I crave these items.  I branched out and ordered ox tail and it was also good, but not a regular menu item.  The wine flights are a great bargain.

This review is based purely on wine, as we didn't order any food or cocktails. Came here on a recommendation from a buddy who met the owner while they were both in South America visiting wine country. Great atmosphere and really solid selection of wine flights at reasonable ($12-15) prices. Their bottle list was very impressive, one of the best I had seen while in Charleston. Some great verticals and really solid prices- think a '79 German Auslese for $100, verticals of Beaucastel, Sine Qua Non, Nicolas Joly, and Vega Sicilia Unico. Awesome stuff. Plus they let me walk through their beautiful cellar which was a definite bonus. I particularly liked the magnum of '97 Drouhin Montrachet sitting in the corner, which isn't on their list. Great vibe, a little more swanky and "modern" for lack of a better term, than many of the places we checked out.

Happy hour here was great. Everything came out tasty and the bartender was generous with the pour, and the house wines on special were just fine. I saw several wines I like behind the bar and the  music in the background was full of Win. I would definitely chill there again.

My entire family came here for a post-dinner drink, and were seated upstairs.  Nice atmosphere, friendly service, and the waitress recommended a great whisky.  The reason that this place is a stand-out place, though, is that when I left my phone here, they agreed without hesitation to send it out in the next day's mail to me in San Francisco.  Awesome.
