Vegan Social Bites! Say whaaaat?!
Just wanted to give another awesome shout out to the wonder and joy that is Social Bites. What a fantastic way to enjoy delicious food and delightful company.
I had the pleasure of attending the Main Street ALL VEGAN event on Feb 19 and had the grandest time. It was wonderful to eat fresh, wholesome , and creative food with adventurous foodies!
Big ups to all the chefs. I am sad I didn't get to try all the dishes as the menus sounded amazing.
Apparently this event sold out in record time..... which hopefully means there will be another Vegan event! So all you veggies take note! Yay! Exclamation mark!1 Previous Review: Show all »

How would you (and a friend) like to go to a stranger's home (hobby chefs) with another pair of strangers and have a home-cooked meal prepared for you, right in front of your eyes, while you get to know everyone and chat about your love for food and adventure and everything in between?
Then you do it all over again, with another pair of strangers, at another strangers' home, having another delicious meal and wonderful conversation.
Everyone (at least 24 people, because each series consists 4 pairs of hobby chefs serving 2 pairs of strangers at a time) meet at a central location after, where the hobby chefs are rated by the diners and a winner is announced. The healthy competition definitely motivate the chefs to come up with unique and delicious recipes as well as beautiful presentation.
If you have a chance to try this I would recommend 100%. The hobby chefs I chose were all fantastic hosts and made my belly sooo happy and satisfied. It was such a unique dining experience that you can't compare to anything else.
Tickets sell out fast so watch their website often or join their mailing list. Even better, if you and a friend enlist as hobby chefs you will get passes to go to the next event of your choice. -

A solid round of 5 stars and a high Five! Not even the famous Chinese Five Spice can beat this one.
Just look at the reviews!
I was lucky enough to be invited, to participate and experience this novel form of Social dining.
This was the first Brunch event and It was, "I must say" a masterful success!
It was a day of Eat, Drink and be merry. A Brunchfest between two Hobby Chef groups, great food, fun competition and lively conversation.
Dare I say I'd do it again? For sure!
Dare I say, I'd consider myself a Hobby Chef?
............Could be, if it's in the cards and if I'm daring enough to take that chance, that first timid step and bound into a leap of faith with French Knife in one hand and sauce pan in another. My Apron billowing in the wind like a Marvel Superhero's cape!
Da da da dahhh!!!! LIke an Iron Chef's dream, I start to imagine myself being one of those daring Hobby Chefs with my ever faithful sidekick, cooking up creations untold and unleashing our creative genius of food inspiration upon food inspiriation.
Or even like "Pinky and the Brain", we are going to rule the culinary world and take it by storm.......
And as I wake up from my dream, I shake my head and think to myself.
Now that was a Social Bite!
Stay Tuned for another amazing event. Check their website for more.
And if you too are lucky to try this out. You may just get hooked.
Wow! Just amazing what an event like this can do to inspire oneself, eh?
And so, my dream continues till another day.
Thanks Pinky. I had an amazing time! :)Listed in: Taste Bud Tinglers, Romancing the Stone.

How it works:
-Reserve a spot online.
-Get directions to stranger's apartments/houses
-Buy your own bottle of wine (or two bottles of wine)
-Go with other strangers to the homes of strangers and eat a first course
-Go with other strangers to the homes of strangers and eat a second course
-Finish at a central area with other strangers who have all been eating first and second courses at the homes of other strangers
-Vote on the best "hobby" chef at whose home you ate your first or second course at
Being into food and meeting new people, this was definitely a concept and experience I can gush over! It's different than potluck - it's home cooked, restaurant presented meals, all prepared by hobby chefs. Plus you get to look at the insides of other people's apartments :)
When I tried this experience a few weeks ago, I started at an apartment downtown with some Asian inspired dishes (3 appetizers to be exact) and then walked (which is what you do) to the next apartment in Yaletown where I experienced an amazing west coast themed dinner complete with some very tasty pilaf and chicken!
We then all gathered at an art gallery where we were given chocolates, dessert wines and bubbles to finish off the night and the winners were announced based on their food presentation, hospitality and of course, the food!
I would totally do this again - but they seem to sell out really fast! (If you do go, make sure you wear pretty socks - you'll likely need to take your shoes off at the door - it is a dinner party after all!) -

Yes, As good as it gets!
What is it? See what Crystal H. wrote. She says it best.
I went through the Social Bites experience last night and I can honestly say that last night was one of my best food experiences I've had to date in Vancouver, if not ever. Like Crystal, I'm also huge into food and meeting new people. I pulled in one of my best friends to be my dinner date. Our first stop on the menu was a Tuscan pasta where the pasta was literally cooked in red wine instead of water, with pancetta, kale, and portobello mushrooms in a red wine sauce. It was delicious! And to begin with, our hobby chef made a nice refreshing blended fruit drink with Sambuca.
Then the second place we went to, they made a handmade tagliatelle pasta with prosciutto wrapped rabbit. But they actually did a 4 course meal with gazpacho to start. Then a market fresh salad with some fancy vinegar from the island (can't remember the name but it was delicious) and pistachio oil for the vinaigrette. Then they had a homemade vanilla ice cream and Chilliwack strawberries, in a homemade waffle bowl for dessert. Everything tasted delicious and the experience was amazing!
At the end we convened at Xoxolat for a chocolate tasting and they announced the winner hobby chef of the event, which was actually the pasta dish with the prosciutto wrapped rabbit. It WAS amazing! And way more fun than eating at a restaurant.
I almost don't want to spread the word so it's easier for me to get tix next time! :-p
I might become a Social Bites junkie too. -

I was lucky enough to bring the lovely and fabulous Crystal H as my date for a Social Bites dinner excursion. At first we felt a little awkward buzzing up to a strangers apartment but after about 5 mins we both felt completely welcome! Everyone was super nice and there was lots of great foodie talk.
By round 2 we were happily on to the next location for our main coarse. Swinging our bagged bottle of wine as we merrily skipped down Yaletown trying to navigate our way through the condo skyscrapers. Again great people, beautiful condo and lots of laughs. All the food was elegantly plated and tasted outstanding!
This is an amazing experience and if you have the opportunity to be a eater or a hobby chef by golly take it! Life is short you know. Plus you never know who might buzz up with a paper bagged bottle of wine! Meeting new people and eating is a perfect combo for a fun and memorable Saturday evening. Eat, meet, move your feet! -

By far one of my BEST dining experience of 2009-- I was absolutely bowled over by this event. SB connects people together... and the food... let me just say that diners hugely benefit from the healthy competition between the chefs. The food I tasted was worth above and beyond what I paid for the event, and the entire experience was more fun than any event I've attended in Vancouver. Ahhh!! I get so excited thinking about Social Bites..!!!!! I can't wait for the next one!!!!!!!!
If you like food, people and adventure, put yourself on the mailing list so you can have first shot at getting in. You will not be disappointed. -

I saw Social Bites on a Yelp newsletter and loved the concept.
I didn't have a concern in the world until five minutes before the guests started arriving and it hit me... I have 8 strangers coming to dinner.
BEST. NIGHT.
Annika is truly talented in bringing together a fantastic experience. I enjoyed every single person that walked through my door, and those I met at the wine and cheese tasting later.
Honestly, if someone is willing to throw themselves out there to a random person's home for the love of food that person has a 95% chance of being awesome. So you pretty much have a group of awesome people paired with incredible food and drinks. Can't wait to get to bounce around eating at the next one.
