Glorious breakfast here our first morning in Anchorage.  We heard great things from a local and since we were staying across the street at the Copper Whale, it made sense to check it out.

We were seated right away and then our server greeted us promptly too.  Checking over the menu, just about everything sounded delicious...it was difficult to narrow it down.  Since we wanted to check out some of the local items, I landed on the Kodiak Benedict: eggs benedict but instead of canadian bacon, they offered up alaskan crab cakes.  Ok so first bite was weird, not gonna lie...it was just unique flavors I'd never experienced before.  But the second and third bite just kept getting better.  It was so good.  The bf got the omlette with veggies and reindeer sausage.  Dynamite.  Small OJ was good.

We liked it so much we came back a second day in a row!  This time someone told us we had to try the stuffed french toast (which is stuffed with cream cheese,) served with this DELICIOUS raspberry butter...drizzle on some syrup and call it a day.  It was delicious.  We split an order of 3 pcs of FToast along with 3 strips of bacon and 3 scrambled eggs.  Small glass of skim milk for me please to down it all.  SO good.

It took a lot of strength not to go there 3x in a row.  It's that good.  Both times the servers were very friendly, prompt, and helpful to us tourists.  Just go here, you won't be disappointed.  They also had some cute looking merch as well as some delicious looking pastries in the case at the front of the store.  I meant to try the famous pecan swirl thing but alas, next trip.

Not a lot of options for lunch, tucked away here in the NW corner or Anchorage.  The servers are nice enough, but the service is slow.  Definite "Earth-Shoe" feel to the place (clean Earth-Shoes, though).  It's as if Portland and Berkeley collided and tectonic forces conspired to converge them here at Snow City.

The food ... menu is limited and there is nothing straightforward, i.e. you're not gonna get a flat-out hamburger here or a basic club sandwich.  Everything on the menu has some designer edge to it, be it the sauce, the type of bread, some spice I never heard of ... That said, I ate here two or three times last week and though it took a little time, I found the not-so-straightforward offerings to be totally palatable and tasty.  I'll be back next time in ANC.

Not much to add that hasn't been said. We had a reservation for Sunday morning and ended up waiting about 10-15 minutes past our reservation time before we were seated. Servers and hostess staff were super friendly. Food took a while to come out, but it was very busy. Stuffed french toast was yummy. White mocha delish.

Looking forward to going back sometime to try the lunch menu!

We got into Anchorage bright and early, so we checked into our hotel and darted to Snow City Cafe.  There were about 5 people waiting out in the freezing cold for the place to open.  Once it did, we were seated in a booth.  I enjoyed the smell of fresh coffee brewing and eyed their baked goods and desserts that included an apricot cheesecake that looked amazing.

I had the Kodiak Benedict (4 stars):  Poached eggs, King crab cakes, toasted English muffin, Hollandaise and  green onions.  My partner in crime had the Tundra Scramble (4 stars):  Ground reindeer sausage (Rudolph never tasted so good!), green peppers, mushrooms, red onions, cheddar.

The ambiance is like a cafeteria cafe sort of vibe, runned by hippies.  The staff is very friendly and accommodating and the crowd is a mix of granolas and business folk.  We even saw a woman wearing FMD-pumps; now that's talent walking in the snow!

A very popular and go-to place for breakfast that usually has long lines if you don't get here relatively near their opening.

Hands down best breakfast place I have ever been to. Every time I go I have to get a heart atack on a plate. Every thing is from scratch just the best in anchorage. I recommend this to every one. Just make sure you get there early or else you are gonna be waiting for a while.

We went here based on a recommendation from our taxi driver. That guy was great! They have coffee to enjoy while you wait for a table. All of the food we had was terrific. It was our first time trying reindeer sausage. Delicious.

The service was excellent. Our server was very friendly and made time to strike up a conversation even though it was busy. We told her we were vacationing from Portland, Maine and she said, "Oh, cool, I'm originally from Westbrook, Maine." Small world.

All the reviews and good ratings made this a spot I had to hit (in addition to a local Yelpers Recommendation). The place is right around the corner from my hotel, so it made it a no brainer (it is also way cheaper, and probably better, than the Hotel Captain Cook).

From the moment you are seated at a table, the wait staff is extremely friendly and attentive. Often times at places that serve breakfast you can be forgotten since they can get quite busy -- not here. Coffee came quickly and pipping hot. They also don't bring milk/cream unless you asking, preventing waste for those who don't end up using it.

I opted for the Tundra Scramble which was round reindeer sausage, green peppers, mushrooms, red onions, and cheddar cheese. This was my first time getting reindeer anything, and it was quite tasty. It had a very nice flavor and while I enjoyed it very much, I think it may have put me on Santa's "naughty list" forever. The dish was large and came with delicious crispy hashbrows. They were some of the best I've ever had in fact. The meal was more than I could eat and a very reasonable $11 for that dish.

This is a great breakfast spot to get away from the crummy stuff you get at a hotel buffet or room service. The majority of the people in the restuarant seemed to be locals, so maybe most tourists/visitors are eating cold buffet eggs, while I eat fresh delicious reindeer.

Went here for lunch today.  The food was pretty good and I would go back.  They are a micro brewery as well and I found the Stout dark beer pretty good but just a bit to sweet for my taste.  The Pale ale was good as well and more to my liking.  Service was good as well.  They normally have a beer as a special of the day and the Stout was todays choice.

Even has some amazing vegan options. The is a wait if you don't call ahead and the wait is worth it's wait in gold.

Here is one more example of why I like yelp so much. I would never have found Snow City Cafe had it not been for my fellow yelpers leading me there. And I'm so glad they did!

Breakfast this morning was the Tundra Scramble: Eggs scrambled with reindeer sausage, green peppers, onions, mushrooms & cheddar cheese. Except I subbed jalapenos for the green peppers. And was it delicious! Served with hash browns and choice of toast it was the perfect breakfast on a dark, cold morning.

I arrived at 9:00 and took a stool at the counter. By the time I finished there was a bit of a wait for tables. The servers were friendly as could be, and really seem to enjoy working there.

I have one more night in Anchorage. Who knows, maybe I'll do breakfast here again tomorrow!

Snow City and Middle Way......all you need to know about breakfast in Anchorage.   Period.

Love snow city.....great place.   From the art, to the service, to the food, to the drinks, it's the best of the best in Anchorage.

Wi-fi is more reliable here than at Middle Way.

Now the downside:   if you are in a group, expect to wait after about 9 am.   Around 11 am on a weekend expect to wait an hour.   The early bird gets the worm, of course.   If you're rolling solo like I frequently do, I always look to sit at the counter and, as a result, never wait.   Service is fantastic, and I love sitting at the booth.

All in all, a great place to come in from the cold and get a great breakfast or just a nice hot cup of coffee.

Favorites include the breakfast burrito and most any omellete.

Like other uber- popular places in Anchorage, I'm not sure what else I can contribute that would be exceedingly helpful or different.

But Snow City is just great. It's an iconic Alaskan cafe, and pretty much everyone must try it. If you haven't, you're missing out. Their menu is eclectic and can meet to the most discerning of tastes, the place is always bustling and busy, and what I absolutely adore is that they've moved on to Monin syrups for their coffee (a much preferred coffee-flavoring for a picky person such as me).

This is the place to go to get a taste of alternative awesomeness. If you're willing to take on the wait, it's worth it. You shouldn't be disappointed with the service or food here. It's spot-on one of the best places to dine at. I'm really surprised it took me so long to find this place when I moved to Alaska, but I'm glad I did.

The thing I can really appreciate about SC is that they actually care. They are thoughtful about the ingredients they put in their food, and they are careful to meet any dietary or allergy restrictions that patrons may have. You can tell that they are actually mindful of what they put in their meals, instead of sloughing out some slop like many places in town. They also try to incorporate as much local produce, which is awesome. I love it when places bring in Valley veggies and stuff.

There is a reason why this place is so popular; find out for yourself.

We try to make it to Snow City when we come to the big city every few months. It never disappoints. This morning was no exception.

We arrived soon after the 7am opening to find the restaurant uncharacteristically quite and uncrowded. Go early if you value solitude and want a leisurely breakfast because it is usually very busy when we visit later in the day. Wait times are usually not more than 15 or 20 minutes in my experience which is just enough time to get started on the coffee you can order and consume while waiting.

The benedicts are so consistently good I rarely stray from that section of the menu, but when I have I have not been disappointed. Everything is delicious and even presented well. For example, this morning we ordered a side of avocado for our 8-month old baby and it was brought out with our food on a nice plate and fanned presentation.

So: Kid-friendly, great coffee (and I'm picky and very specific - they customize!), excellent food, and awesome service = five stars.

I came on a morning trying to waste some time before the bookstore opened at 9 am in the middle of the week  It wasn't busy at all. The staff was very nice. All smiling and in good spirits.

I was seated and ordered coffee and the salmon cakes.  The salmon cakes were not what I expected at all. They seemed to be bathed in salt and pepper. The hashbrowns and eggs were cooked to perfection and I enjoyed both.

While the cakes weren't up to par for me I will definitely try snow city again.
The atmosphere was very warm and my waiter was very accommodating making sure I had everything I needed.

I will definitely give this warm cozy cafe another shot and just avoid the salmon cakes.

I can't help it, I love Snow City.  Maybe it's because they have the Kodiak Benedict.  Maybe because I saw Vanessa Hudgens there when she was filming in the area.  Maybe because it reminds me of brunch places in San Francisco.  Whatever the reason, I really really enjoy this place.

    So far I've gotten:

Kodiak Benedict - a benedict with crab cakes.  Typically $12.95, it was $14.95 when the crab got expensive, but thankfully it's back to $12.95 at the date of this review.  The crab cakes are flavorful and fresh.

Sockeye Salmon Cakes with Eggs - $10.95 - Okay, but not great.  I found the salmon to cakes to be dry but thankfully I had gotten the eggs over-easy so the yolk moistened them a bit.

Fried Egg Sandwich - $10.95 - Delicious.  Two eggs over medium, bacon, red onions, herb mayo, avocado on sourdough.  The eggs were still runny, so this was a little sloppy to eat. I would recommend ordering it with people you are comfortable with.

Chicken Salad B.L.T. - $12.95 - Chicken salad with apples with BLT.  It was delicious and the apples added some great sweetness to an otherwise salty dish.

People mock Snow City as "Slow City" for the service, but I've found the service to be fine.  Sometimes they are even a little too eager to get your order when you've only just sat down.

The only thing I find lacking is that I'm not crazy about the hash browns.  I enjoy them, but they are too salty and a little too mushy in the middle.  They pale in comparison to Spenard Roadhouse's breakfast potatoes but since I live and work in downtown, Snow City's location can't be beat.

It's hard not to enjoy this space -
all bright art and no unsmiling face
    serving up eggs or brew
(that's coffee or beer, you choose).
I respect they give breakfast it's place.

My tuna melt was huge! But delish.
Surprise - another meal of fish!
    Avocado slices,
    wafts of coffee entices
one to stay all day ordering dish after dish.

The only reason this place doesn't get 5 stars is because of the wait. The place is just too popular for it's size but I have to say that it was well worth it. The surroundings are pleasant though and there is a nice waiting area. If it's warm enough you can just wait outside as well. They have the lighted beeper thing going on.

The service is very friendly and accommodating and once you get a table they are all over it and the coffee just keeps flowing. The restaurant is very clean with super big windows all around to let in that scarce Alaskan light. The booths were comfy and conducive to lingering. OK I know that's a no no but when you have to wait 40 minutes for a table, a little lingering ain't gonna hurt, so we lingered. The walls are adorned with quality art for sale from locals, a nice touch.

The menu is complete and all the items are labeled. If you happen to be gluten-free or veggie they will take care of you. I don't think they offer gluten-free bread but items that contain no wheat are labeled as such. Not sure it's safe for Celiacs but it's worth asking about. The food is that good. They have veggie omelets, crabby omelets, and one of my favorites, Nuevo Huevos: white corn tortilla, brown rice, black bean salsa, eggs any style. This is a real yummer so check it out when you're there. You might also want to check out the havarti veggie omelet.

Great place so I highly recommend this one. This one makes the A list.

Let me start by saying, by Anchorage standards, this place is phenomenal.  I've noticed a couple of tourists reviewing SCC with "meh"s and I can understand a Lower 48 person, with many more options, being unimpressed with the local 5-star raves.

THAT BEING SAID, SCC is honestly a wonderful, diverse and awesome place!  And it's, hands down, the best breakfast in town.  The menu is not your typical Denny's fare, with inventive (and Vegetarian and Vegan-friendly choices) and delicious options.  Everything tastes fresh and just plain gooooood.

PROS: Great food, friendly wait staff, cool ambiance/decor, large seating area, lots of windows for bright, natural light.

CONS: Wait times!  (It's a popular place.) And only street parking. :(

But I would recommend SCC to anyone looking for a hearty, satisfying breakfast/lunch!  It's a local favorite that's reflective of our little eclectic Anchorage personality!

I ate here a week ago on a trip to Anchorage and wasn't too impressed.  The 5-star reviews here had me ready to drown in a sea of the most delicious French toast the world has ever known, but that never happened.

What really happened was a crowded restaurant, a long wait for a table, and dinky portion sizes.  The food was tasty, but the overall experience was just average.

When it comes to Breakfast... Call me the connoisseur of 'cakes, savant de scrambles, and the arbiter of all things morning and good. It's my favorite meal and the prime expression of human life.

Big coffee lied to you people. The best part of waking up is not Folgers! It's breaking the fast at Snow City Cafe.

The food is amazing. In particular I've been spotted nibbling, noshing and gnawing my way through piles of their delicious scramble platters, their hot cereal/fresh fruit plates and the delicious sticky buns they make. The coffee is good and they make a wicked good mimosa (if that's your thing... you know, breakfasting like a King or Queen. I really enjoyed the pomergranate mimosa. It tasted of sunshine and and really old grape juice. But I digress...) even if it was a touch expensive.

I really love eating here but there are a few things to be aware of. I'm not the only one who loves this place. Weekenders beware, there will be a long wait, and for good reason. Also, you may have to walk a little ways for parking. I'm one thumb short of how many thumbs up I would like to award to Snow City Cafe.

Most important thing you need to know:  call ahead to place your name on the waiting list for a table.

We were stymied on a Saturday when we were told that the wait was 1 hour 45 minutes (!) but called ahead on Sunday and got in for breakfast.  We were not disappointed--one salmon benedict and one crab benedict and both were deeply satisfying.

Probably the craziest breakfast scene I've ever experienced in terms of the sheer volume of people waiting for tables to open up in a rather large floorplan.    Snow City could double its size and still be full, at least on a weekend morning in August.  If you don't have time to wait, they sell coffee, muffins, bagels and the like out of the front counter.

There were plenty of people working and all of them were efficient and knew what they were doing--the wait is long just because there are that many people willing to wait to eat at Snow City.   If and when I return to Anchorage--I'd definitely want to eat here again.

I never thought of Anchorage as a gluten-free and vegan friendly kind of place.  It's probably not, but Snow City Cafe manages to do a pretty damn brisk business whilst catering to a very diverse set of dietary restrictions.

For instance: I briefly flirted with a reindeer only diet.  Fortunately, the reindeer sausage scramble was both tasty and filled with plenty of delicious Donner (or was that Blitzen?)  Simultaneously, my wife ate what was apparently a very satisfying vegetarian breakfast.  What fun is that?

Plus, the toast is rad.  Potatoes?  Not so much.  Still... Yay! I'm a fan.

We ate here because we found a coupon in our Northern Lights book and were super pleasantly surprised. The homemade soup hit the spot on a chilly Alaskan August day, and the wife was thrilled to find reasonably priced salads with veggies that didn't look like they'd travelled two weeks to get here. Next time we're in Alaska we'll come by for breakfast!

I am a sucker for a great breakfast, and I think the best place to find one in downtown Anchorage is the Snow City Café.   This place was recommended to me by an old lady I ran into on the street, and she got it right.

This is a great diner and it seems like everybody in town knows it.  I got there around 8AM on a week day, and there was a bunch of people waiting for tables.  It is a good sized restaurant and is warm and inviting, but it just gets really busy.  I opted for a seat at the counter and avoided the wait.

The snow City Café is open for breakfast and lunch, so their menu consists of breakfast classics, as well as sandwiches, soups, salads, shakes and smoothies.  No dinner here.

Well, it was breakfast time so I opted for a ham, cheese and onion omelet with hashed browns and sourdough toast, with a cup of coffee.

The coffee was fantastic, and was served up in a garage sale mug.  And if there is good coffee, I can forgive a multitude of sins, such as leaving the onions out of my omelet, or serving me a square of hashed brown jerky.  But the omelet was good (even without the onions), and I loved the home-made preserves for the toast.  A winning meal, in my opinion.

The Snow City Café is located at 1034 West 4th Avenue in Anchorage, Alaska, across the street from Resolution Park.  You can check out their menu and info at http://snowcitycafe.com.

    Happy motoring!

One of the best breakfast places in Anchorage

Among us, we had eggs and pancakes (Polar Bear), bacon, reindeer sausage, salmon cakes and eggs, eggs Florentine, tea and coffee.  The only thing to avoid is the reindeer sausage, which tastes like a hot dog (disappointing).  Everything else was tasty, the service was good, and it has a nice little breakfast place ambiance.

Mugs of coffee (added to your tab) make a 20-minute wait easier to bear. Pager notification (the buzzer thingy) means you can sit outside on a bench (weather permitting) and enjoy the free Wi-Fi while you wait.
Denali Dancer had the crabby omelet (gluten-free, as are many items on menu, served with corn tortillas). I had the sockeye salmon cakes w/eggs, hash browns, and sourdough. Great service, the Kaladi coffee (roasted in Alaska) kept coming.

Is this Berkeley? I would swear this college-vibe little gem was off campus Berkeley or Stanford. The mood is laid back and a bit granola. There always seemed to be a wait, but with good reason.

I had the veggie sandwich (and asked them to add turkey). The bread was multi grain and the veggies were sprouts, tomato, cucumber, tomato and the mystery ingredient was actually garlic hummus. The fresh veggies combined with the garlic hummus was a delightful combination. I also had a cup of their tomato bisque soup which was creamy, flavorful and had little tomato chunks throughout. Very, very good.

Overall the wait staff was on the money, friendly and the food was fresh and beautifully prepared. I ended up going back once more after my first meal and enjoyed the crabby omelet with snow crab, swiss cheese, green onions and avocado. My friend devoured his Kodiac Benedict and I tried a bite. Tasty!

This is a great little place to have coffee, drinks, breakfast or lunch. Fun atmosphere and friendly wait staff. Check it out!

Such a cute little place to go for breakfast/brunch! Love that it has a lot of windows, natural light.. and friendly staff.

Sadly, I've only been here once but it was such an adorable restaurant and I had to go here after hearing a lot of great things about this place.

I ordered the Eggs Florentine (Poached eggs, fresh spinach, Roma tomato slices, toasted English muffin, Hollandaise). I must say that I've had...better. The spinach AND my english muffins were soggy.. possibly from the tomato slices or the spinach. It was such a disappointment.

Im still a fan of the restaurant (minus the horrible street parking).

In the morning, I believe the whole town of anchorage is in this cafe.
Wait times are 45 mins to an hour.

The two times I ate here I made my own omelet.  It had mushrooms, pepperjack cheese, reindeer sausage and snow crab.

    Delicious!
Service was great for a busy place.

Great breakfast place, it's the only place in Alaska that reminded me of Seattle-type food!! I love the vegetarian options and they have fake-meat! Yum.

They have soymilk for my coffee and trendy tattooed staff bringing me things. And Ohmigod the food was AWESOME!!! The stuffed french toast was killer, but share it with someone or it might get too sweet.

My build-your-own omelet was crazy good. They dont skimp on ingredients and it's all high quality.

Nice, bustling cafe with all the traditional breakfast fare. We had to wait about 30 minutes for a table, but I was expecting that. We walked over to the Captain Cook hotel while we waited for the table. Food was good, but I forget what I ordered.

My absolute most favorite place to eat in Anchorage. The breakfast is out of this world I can see why they keep getting voted the best every year. The wait is long but I do not care I just get a coffee drink and sip on it while we wait for a table. I always end up getting the Kodiac Benedict I don't know why I even bother looking at the menu because nothing ever tempts me to stray from it.  I also love the atmospher it's this sorta urban diner with an artsy spin very fun and I like the people that work there. Keep it up Snow City!!!!

We hit this joint for a late breakfast this morning.  It was really good.  I am a real fan of Biscuits and gravy and theirs was really good.  My wife when with the make your own omelet.  It was so big she was not able to finish it all.  She also really liked the hash browns.

The place was really busy and our server was really nice.  Just a lot of great people and a fun place to eat.  We will be headed back there for breakfast tomorrow so that says it all for me.

Three little words: Almond. Joy. Espresso.

Sure it's $4.75 but that's a small price to pay to hear the angels sing. (This coming from a self-professed coffee snob).

This is our first trip to Anchorage so I can only speak for the Ship Creek Benedict and (classic) Eggs Benedict - the former being a divine medley of succulent salmon, perfectly poached eggs, and heavenly hollandaise glittered with juicy red onion atop a perfectly toasted English muffin.

If you're a traditionalist (as is my husband when it comes to breakfast), the Eggs Benedict was also very tasty.  Both are served with crispy-on-the-outside, tender-on-the-inside hashbrowns, which our fabulous server, Jessica, informed us could easily be substituted for something a little more health conscious.  The menu cheerfully boasts a number of gluten-free, vegetarian and - cue gasp! - VEGAN options so if that's your thing, head to West 4th Avenue and take a seat.

While we didn't wait longer than a couple minutes to take our seats, it should be noted that we did arrive at more of a "brunch/early bird lunch" hour on a Thursday. We also noticed little business cards with the telephone number urging patrons to phone ahead to reserve a table and a rather large sign that reserved Snow City's right to refuse to seat incomplete parties... :-? So I am assuming there is usually a pretty decent wait for seating.

For those who make a habit of arriving to a restaurant FAMISHED, it might also be useful to note that although the drinks came out really quickly, we waited about 45 minutes for the food.  And I noticed that trend spread across the dining room.

Fortuitously, I had a pack of playing cards in my purse so we got our Gin Rummy on whilst awaiting our meal.  In a place so quirky and casual, we blended right in. If you don't "happen to have" a deck of cards on hand like some crazed casino-phile, you could always take in the art or people-watching. :-)

This is a fun, young, and family friendly food landmark in Anchorage. At any given day, you might be waiting in line next to a tattooed hipster or the Canadian Consul or a suited business person.

Staff is hip and artsy, and the food is tasty. Servings are generous, and the hashbrowns are particularly buttery and delicious.

My favorite on the menu is the tuna sandwhich. Sounds plain jane, but it's a declicious variation on your elementary school lunch sandwhich - open face, with avocados tasty toppings!
