I'm allergic to shellfish, so my choices are limited when it comes to fish. However, I'm always happy when I find a fish market where I can purchase fish KNOWING that it hasn't been cross contaminated.

The owner here has 30 years experience, and has been in this location for 12 of those years (before that, the St. Lawrence Market). He is warm and gracious and takes pride in serving fish that is "FRESH! FRESH! FRESH!" (as he says).

If you live in Bloor West, this is truly a local business that you'll fall in love with.

A good place for fresh fish is a plus in any neighbourhood, and Bloor West Village has Snappers. It's cheerful and clean, and doesn't veer toward either the clinical or the nautical in its aesthetic.

I was just here recently, and charged the fish purchase (a couple pieces of cajun catfish). Accordingly, I had my first encounter with the pen they give you to sign with: a big orange plastic thing with a fake crab claw on the end of it. There was a little lever to move the claw which, as the lady at the counter pointed out to me, retracts the pen too (saving me a sliver of embarrassment lest I use it in that condition).

I love this place. The staff are always great about answering my questions about different kinds of fish, and their supply is always fresh and delicious. Check the eyes on the whole trout - you'll see that they're always shiny and not at all sunken. Good stuff!
