This place is the real deal! I tried the pulled pork sandwich and the brisket today, and they both blew me away (although I would have loved to have pickles included on my pulled pork sandwich). Deep and smokey with the perfect balance of sweet, tangy, and rich. The portions were very generous without being obnoxious (I would estimate that each sandwich had somewhere between a third pound and a half pound of meat). I also had a side of mac and cheese and I tried the coleslaw (which comes on the pulled pork sandwich automatically - way to go!), and both were delicious. Nelson desperately needed a barbecue joint and now we have one. I will have to eat here at least twice a week. Also, considering the quality of ingredients and the time and care that goes into their preparation, I think the prices are very reasonable (I think it was about $8 per sandwich and about $3 per side)

I appreciated the little details: the sandwiches are served on onion buns- mmmmm, the mac and cheese had a light dusting of breadcrumbs on my individual side portion, large bottles of tasty BBQ sauce were provided at the tables, and the hand cut coleslaw was the perfect counterpoint to the rich pork. Too often, I find that coleslaw at restaurants seems to be a bit of an afterthought - a bunch of pre-shredded bagged cabbage sitting in gobs of mayo and vinegar. This slaw was obviously hand cut (and included red cabbage, which I love), and the dressing was perfectly balanced.

I can only hope that it catches on in Nelson, where people seem to think that "barbecue" is a device (a "grill" in American English) used to cook hamburgers outdoors in the summer, rather than a varied and nuanced style of Southern American cuisine. I hope it wasn't too risky to open a restaurant devoted to smoked meat here in Nelson, a mecca for a lot of vegetarian/vegan/locavore/macrobiotic/tofu/spelt nonsense (BTW, the meat at Smokewood is local, as well as antibiotic and hormone free, according to their website). We carnivores really need to unite and get behind this place. The food is as good as any I have had in the South (and I am a native - Born in Chapel Hill, NC, and raised in Austin, TX). Also, it is much better than BBQ chains like Famous Dave's), and they deliver, too!

EDIT: They now have pickles! Big old giant kosher dills in a gallon-sized jar on the counter! Reminds me of my childhood. They now get 6 stars from me!

What perfect timing. I moved to Nelson as Smokewood was opening and beginning to dish their flavourful smoked meats. Tucked into a tiny storefront below Baker, Smokewood has tapped into a niche market with their take-out BBQ offerings. Owners Chad Tonnos and Mike Harmer have kept the menu very simple, and every item is wonderful. Slow smoked in-house, the pulled pork is juicy and tender. I agree with Cruickshank when it comes to the pickles though, it would be nice if their sandwiches were served with a wedge to cut the richness of the meat(s). Nelson has changed since the 1960s and locals are eating meat like nobody's business these days...good timing guys!

The food is knockout terrific.  Reasonable price.  Large portions.  One table with four seats.  One counter with 5 seats.  Be prepared to take out.  Closes at 7:30 PM weekdays.  Get there early.  They run out of food.
