Review from Giselle R.
Jersey City, NJ
I've decided that I am just going to bring my sleeping bag and hope that the owners just let me crash here permanently.
In case that doesn't work out I'm going to start buying items for the1890's townhouse we just bought because there are so many things (everything) in this store that can furnish it. Well, a little bit at a time anyways.
Or I can just move in.
Seriously, what a great mix of antique and new. There are so many items that would feel right at home in an old townhouse like mine and many, many modern things that I would have use for or would look nice in a more modern place.
Furniture, kitchen items, decorative items, soaps(handmade?), leather goods, bric a brac, the list goes on and on...and on.
Hell, I don't even have to restore my place, I can just fill it with all the amazing things here and call it a day.
I wound up buying an awesome antique wire milk carrier with milk bottles for my kitchen. Sooo cool.
I also bought the impossible to find Weck canning jars. Seriously, I had been searching for these jars in NYC for the longest time and they carry them in all kinds of sizes.I think I might have let out a little YELP( see what I did there?) when I found them.
I even found my favorite perfume,D.S. & Durga, that I used to buy downtown in the city. That alone is worth the visit.
Mr. Chang was gracious and accommodating as I went on and on about how much I loved his place. I think he could sense I was leading up to moving in though but he was cool about it. I don't think I'm the first .
So, if you're trying to reach me and I'm not home, I'm probably here picking out just one more thing.
Or two.
Or measuring the space I'm going to lay my sleeping bag in. -

Everybody is nice here. This is how a store is supposed to be run. Nice people and tasteful stuff to buy. It is like a localized version of Restoration Hardware but with better prices and cooler stuff. Mrs El S really likes it.

Whats not to like about this place? It quaint and lovely. The style of home goods is mostly rustic chic, which I personally adore. Its a bit on the pricey side but totally worth it (support local business!). The kitchenware section has some really great items, so throw away that Bed Bath & Beyond 20% off coupon and head to Smith & Chang instead. Also, the store gets extra points in my book for playing a great selection of New Orleans style jazz music.

I really like what these folks are doing - selling a mix of vintage and new, quality goods that appeal to people like me. While I wish I could buy more (e.g. the Billykirk bags are awesome), there are affordable things that can make your home look great.

LOVE love LOVE this place! So many amazing finds, from furniture to dishes. They also stock custom wares created by Jersey City Craft Mafia members, including unique jewelry pieces created from branches and leaves from nearby Hamilton Park.
It's a great place to browse and stock up on pieces for your home that no one else has.
I personally am a fan of the filament light bulbs that they have in stock. -

Amazing space in the heart of Hamilton Park! Its items are simultaneously old world and modern, minimalist chic...and remind me of the way I'd decorate a cozy, rustic home in the Hamptons or Maine for a summer entertaining guests. Copper pitchers, weathered glassware, candles and candlesticks, and wooden bowls...baskets and linens and small leather goods. This store caters to a certain aesthetic and does it extremely well...it is unapologetic in its classic point of view with touches of whimsy. Great for gifts for others...or yourself!

I want to own everything in this store. Actually, I want to move in and make this my crib. Everything is just rustic, useful and artistic. The prices could be lessened to acommadate my income but hey, great items sometimes need a hefty price tag.

This is one store I wish I lived in. Elevating the every day pieces of life to fine art, Smith & Chang have brought a level of elegance to the Hamilton Park neighborhood with their curated collections of tableware, furnishings, linens, decor, hardware, acccessories... you name it and they've staged it.
Browse for gifts, find inspiration for your own home, or pick up locally crafted jewels and baubles for your loved ones. The owners are friendly and often host fantastic giveaways at the cost of signing up for a mailing list. Stop here while in Hamilton Park, Madame Claude Wine, or the Co-Op around the corner.Listed in: Thrift Shop! An' You Don't…

Spring has sprung! At least for today. So, I put on my hip walkin' shoes (Fleuvogs) and went for a stroll with my main man. We happened upon this place and decided to check it out, even though at first glance I expected it to be one of those places that sells over-priced gifts that I can't see buying for anyone I know.
As it turned out, both my husband and I saw tons of neat, reasonably-priced items that we would love to receive or give as gifts. He even said, "anyone getting married or move recently? We should buy the gift here!" That was really so unlike him.
Typically in a store like this, he'll wander around for a minute and then say he'd wait outside. In this case, he's the one who grabbed the postcard on the way out and remarked that the store is open 'til 8 on weeknights (closed on Mondays, though). Quite a feat on the part of the store owners. Maybe it was the stemmed beer glasses that caught his attention ($7.95 a piece and incredibly stylish) or the funky morter and round rock-like pestle (the pestle is the part you grind with, right? I just realized I don't know which part is which).
We'll definitely be back, maybe even to grab some items for our own apartment. Those delicate, etched glasses and the wooden cheese board are calling to me.Listed in: The best of Jersey City

ADORABLE! SO many unique items for the home! Some things are overpriced and some are priced exactly as they should be. I may be a little picky over price points just because I'm a designer and know how to source many of these items for less. For the average person, these prices are as they should be.
I love that they offer items from the Beekman Farm-local NYC guys that bought a farm/home in upstate NY and started making prodcuts (soaps, cheese). It shows that Smith & Chang understand the importance of supporting other local businesses as we should support this one!
Go buy something-it will add some interest to your home, I promise! -

If you're looking for unique home goods, this is the spot. I've purchased glass wear, a leather wallet, spice containers, a vase and an evil eye bracelet at great prices. Wish I had more space in my fifth floor walk-up for one of the mid-century steel armchairs on display.

Amazing finds here! A lot is vintage and the owners travel to upstate NY to find these amazing pieces. I was amazed at the selection.

I love this store! They have amazing furniture pieces, but what I really come in here for are the unique housewares. It's a great place to buy presents for friends. Everytime I pass by I am drawn into it. The shop owner and employees are really welcoming too.

This store is absolutely heavenly. The minute I walked in I was bombarded by amazing taste, unique and beautiful housewares and a million things I had to have. This is one of my favorite stores in not only NJ, but NY. I love love love it and cannot recommend it enough.

Great store to buy something as a gift. A lot of high-quality pieces that maybe you don't get for yourself, but that you know will impress the person you're giving it to.
