Went to this place and thought that the food was good, the prices were fair and the place was clean. I will go back again and recommend it to friends.

    Keep up the good work.

I ate the San Diego burger. It came with a generous heap of mayo (too much, in my opinion) and small slivers of avocado. It was not very memorable. The patty was very small.

    Service was great.

The best part of this visit was probably the bucket of beer (4 beers) for $10.99 and sitting outside to people-watch. Pretty good deal and fun late-night shenanigans abound.

This place is a Fail because I came in just after an intense workout (i.e. half marathon) and brought with me a huge appetite.  Normally this means that everything tastes good, but this was definitely not the case for Smashburger. I ordered their classic burger and sweet potato fries which was brought to my table promptly. There are placards on every table that says: "Why do our burgers taste so good?" and explains their special seasoning and quality burger meat, but when I bit into the burger all I could taste in Every Bite was the copious amounts of ketchup and mustard they put in the sandwich.  It was literally dripping off the sides.  I tried to wipe it off with my napkin but it was too late and the mustard had already been absorbed in everything.  I couldn't even taste the burger meat.  The cashier or manager (?) even happened to come over and ask how it was, and I told her that there was waaaaay too much ketchup and mustard, and she agreed that they tend to put a lot of it on in the kitchen.  She did ask if she could replace it, but I wasn't hungry anymore.  Because I was so hungry I ate most of the fries and half the burger, though the mustard burger pretty much ruined my appetite.

The bathrooms were very clean and service was friendly, so 2 stars for that.  Won't try again.

I wish I had the option of giving this place 0 stars. I just finished eating there literally 10 minutes ago and I came straight back to my place to write this review. I couldn't have conjured up a worse experience in my head than the one that just took place. The place was almost empty (I wonder why) and it took 24 minutes to receive 2 chicken sandwiches and a shake. Then when the food finally came out they got the order wrong and forgot half of the sandwich.

To top it off, while they were making the first incorrect sandwich, the shake sat there on the counter melting. When we asked them to remake the shake, because it melted over the course of sitting there for the last 20 minutes, they forgot to remake it and we had to remind them, when the chicken sandwich was remade.

While I went to drop off my chicken sandwich at the table, I see the two cashiers laughing to each other and clearly not caring at all. The shake was remade (even worse than the melted one) and our order was complete after 31 minutes.

The grease from the remade chicken sandwich had almost caused the bottom of the bag to give out, after being in there only minutes.

All in all THE worst experience I have ever had at a restaurant. The customers in front of us waited just as long and left angrily and as I was leaving people were also complaining about the service. Not a single person in there was happy.

If anyone in the corporation actually cares about things like this happening at their restaurant, they would find out who the 2 workers are that are working right now, and the cooks, and get rid of them by their next shift.

Go-to place for me when craving a burger. Flavorful, juicy meat, fresh ingredients and the fries are phenomenal. Still with a modern approach. I like this place better than Burger Lounge and am stoked that one opened off of Aero Drive now (close to home).

Anyone mistake a Smash Burger for a Game Stop? I sure did...the signs have the same font with the red and white :)

So i came in here looking for Modern Warfare 3...oh wait..this is a burger joint.

This place usually have lines that go out to the window however the lines don't stay long at all..Unless of course you got that one douche bag that's right before you that has to ask every effing question regarding the stuff in the menu....had those people...then they start yappin bout how they had a burger somewhere else that was horrible blah blah blah.

I digress...Food is aswesome...the staff is real patient so if you a douche that plans on asking every effing question that has to do with a burger that they sell, don't worry about it...just worry bout the hungry people behind you that wishes you slip and fall otw to getting your drink :)

anyways...good place to eat, good service...fries aren't salty and burgers ain't too oily.

Usually good looking/sexy people don't eat burgers however Smash Burgers is the place to go too if healthy people want to be naughty.

The menu has so much potential, but the team at this location has way too much apathy.

I have tried Smashburger several times now and each time, it comes close but something major goes wrong. One time, they forgot my onion straws. Another time, they forgot to make my shake so I got to sit there while my food went cold to wait for the counter lady to make my shake, and even then, it was too thin and flavorless. Yet another time, I waited out front for a good 2 - 3 minutes while the counter lady finished chatting with the folks in the kitchen...meanwhile a line formed to the door.

I was optimistic about the burgers -- the meat, buns and veggies always taste fresh. But then, like today, they go and screw it up by putting something I did not request on the burger. Today it was relish. (Relish is solely for hot dogs, if you ask me.) Another day it was ketchup. I don't like ketchup and it's kind of hard to un-ketchup a burger.

I think the core problem is training and lack of supervision. People return to a neighborhood joint for consistently good food. If these people worked a little harder or paid closer attention, that obnoxious tip bowl on the counter would have more than a sad dollar bill and some change. Take a tip from the hustlers across the street at The Knotty Barrel. I gladly pop $10 for a burger, made accurately to my order, and served with a smile by those guys.

Not bad, not bad at all.  If I lived closer to one, I'd probably go pretty regularly.  However, it's not so over the top good that I'd drive to one regularly.

The Baja Burger (guac, pepperjack, LTO, chipotle mayo and fresh jalapenos) was good.  They season the patty well (which is something so many places miss!), but the chipotle bun was a little bland and dry.  The Smash Fries are really good and I also stole a few of my friend's sweet potato fries, also good.

Service is outstanding.  So very friendly and nice!

WHAT TO ORDER: Spicy Baja, San Diego

This place is as easy as it gets when it comes to ordering. A simple burger joint that even sells BEER!!! This location is especially nice because it's right in the middle of East Village Downtown. Window seating is available to enjoy lunch / dinner and city watch.

    - Spicy Baja, I liked ALOT. I loved the thick sliced peppers over the guacamole. The pepper jack cheese gave it just the right kick. The burger was a good size and very juicy.

    - The San Diego was also pretty decent. Think classic burger with guacamole! I couldn't find anything to complain about.

Customization of each burger is definitely welcomed, as well as the different sides to choose from. A smashing place!!!!!

    Smash Burger,

Thank you for being nearby my apartment and always greeting me with a smile.  I always appreciate your service.  Your mushroom swiss burger is astounding and your seasoned fries are great.  However, two of the three times I've been there I was dissatisfied with my food as it was simply generic and largely over priced.  I ordered your buffalo chicken and it okay, nothing to brag about by any means, but I couldn't help but feel disappointed after my order (including fries and drink) was well over $10.  I could have gone to a sit down or ordered a beer elsewhere.  I think your food must be hit or miss.

My advice to future yelpers, don't try the buffalo chicken or whatever I had the first time.  Give the mushroom swiss a try and you shall have enjoyed your meal.

Good day to all of you.

My coworkers and I tried this spot out a few days ago. I was stoked to give the rosemary fries a try. They were supes tasty!

Since I don't eat red meat, I opted for the black bean burger, no bun. Unfortunately, there were bread crumbs mixed in with the black beans to make the burger patty. My sensitivity to gluten has made bread my mortal enemy. I ate all the toppings and the fries.

Side-note, the website has an allergen menu which is pretty helpful overall, but failed to list the black bean burger.

Next time I will try the banana milkshake.

This place is worthy of three stars for sure. Anyone who says the food here is a bit too salty is pretty much right... But overall, not too bad. I liked the black bean burger a LOT, though I wish the patty had fit on the bun (and didn't overhang it). It was BIG for the price, I thought! I had it done "San Diego" style, and while I didn't taste avocado really, I figure it was on there (and the overall taste was really good). The sweet potato fries were not bad (nice touch w/ the rosemary!) but a bit too salty & overcooked for my taste. The fried pickles did not rival those from my hometown in OK, but I did not expect them to. I didn't think they were all that great for the price, though.

In short, I'd definitely go back for the black bean burger, and probably would pass on everything else. Bums me out they don't list the black bean burger on their website! But I am glad they have at least one veg option in the restaurant (other than the sides).

Oh, and the service I was given at this location was fast & super friendly!

So frustrating. Every time I come here they mess up my order.

I check the register for what the entered order is...it's correct. I check the marker writing on the paper bag...it's correct. Open up the burger and it's a completely wrong burger, or they forgot the add-ons.

The food is good but I don't want to have to keep paying for something other than my order.

    Two words...skip it...

There are about 75,000 places to get a over priced burger downtown,  skip this one. I got the chicken sandwich and my girlfriend got the no bun classic burger. Her's came out and it looked horrible..tasted the same.. Mine was ok...  When you have 6 places to get the same food within 3 blocks of each other...you got to bring a better game!

Came here cause I was super hungry and friend recommended this place in downtown SD.  Its convenient how everything is walking distance in downtown.  It's on the corner and you can't miss the red and white umbrellas outside.

I walked in, typical burger joint.  You got your burgers, chicken sandwiches, and salads.  I got the "make your own" chicken sandwich~ You can choose from grilled or breaded chicken.  You also, got a variety of buns and sauces to choose from.  I got the multi-grain, breaded chicken, lettuce, tomato, jalapenos, pickles, and with honey mustard.  Honestly, something so simple as this, it was pretty good and all the ingredients were very fresh!  The jalapenos were pretty spicy, so watch out for those suckers.  All in all, nothing really stood out amazing here or something I would "crave" and come back too.  If there was nothing else to eat and this place was close enough, I would eat there for lunch or dinner.

A friend got chili cheese fries, it was OKAY. Nothing great, they don't give you enough chili!!!

Sweet potato fries = A. Ok. Needs a little something something.

But next time I'll go try their baja burger, which I heard was pretty good.  If I'm in the area...

Tried Smashburger for the first time last night and it was delish!  The girl working the register was great and super helpful~~ she put up with our crazy order of adding like 7 different things on each burger and she didn't seem to get frustrated!!  until the cash register wouldn't cooperate and there were about 10 other people behind us in line.  Even then, she was still super sweet and called over the Manager.  the Manager was the sweetest, HAPPIEST and most helpful manager I have ever seen!  She comp'd our fries because she felt bad that the register was going slow even though we didnt really mind.  We saw her swiftly walking throughout the place the whole time we were there, making sure everyone was happy and got what they wanted.  Her cheery attitude brightened my mood!

The food was great!  All of the random ingredients we added to our burgers was super yummy and the Smashfries were good too!

I don't usually frequent burger places (even though I love them!) but I can see myself coming back here many more times since not only was the food good, but the manager was just the best!

Meh.  Burger was OK.  Kind of mad I ordered one of their signature burgers that was supposed to have onion rings and they forgot the onion rings.  I was home by the time I realized it...

Not the best I've had, not the worst either.

The biggest gripe I have and I have heard this from other people is the setup for ordering.  Once you step up to the counter the menu with all the toppings selections is behind you, so you have to keep looking back then to the person taking your order...It's kindo of lame hence the reason for my ordering a "signature" burger.  The menu needs to be over the counter where I can see it.  There are so many slections that there is no way to get it all down to memory by the time you order.

I checked this place out today with some co-workers.
I had the Spicy baja (with avacado) It really was a tasty burger.
The fries i ordered were normal fries, but a little over-cooked.
My co-worker oredered some fried pickles, so i ate some. THey were tasty, but i cant see myself eating a whole plate full. He told me it was good if someone else ordered it and you ate just a few. he was right.
on the whole, good experience. Friendly staff, very clean.
i only wished i ordered a bigger burger.

I gotta say, I'm not really a fan. I've been seeing these restaurants open up around town and was dying to try it out but came out vaguely disappointed.

The problems with the food is that it's just pretty bland. The burger doesn't have much flavor to it. I basically tasted the lettuce and other ingedients. The meat itself didn't really stick out, which brings my rating down.

I really dont know what the hype is about this place but wish them all the luck.

This was my 3rd visit to a Smashburger (previously seen in La Jolla and Mission Valley ) and my sentiment is still the same - MEH. I dont mind going here if someone else chooses it but wouldn't pick it.

I'm a marathon runner and like my meat! A flat, squashed piece of meat .. really? Hmm..

When I went to the other 2 locations I had chicken, but this time I had a burger. I was beyond dissappointed with my flat, squashed, thin burger ... but I do realliy LOVE their "build your own" option. The meat was way too sparse in my book (should a burger be 2 parts bun to 1 part meat??), but I LOVE LOVE LOVE create your own options.

I had the veggie frites again which were again greasy, but still, I like them over fries. This place goes into a list of places I wouldnt' mind going with frinds who wanted to go, but I wouldn't pick on my own.

I am a big fan of the griddle method of burger cooking, so I made sure to drop by here for lunch during Comic-Con.  (There are no Smashburger locations near me in the Bay Area, though for some reason we're experiencing an influx of Five Guys, too greasy for me.)

The place was packed (to be expected, it was Con).  It took about half an hour to get my food (not *completely* their fault, I blame Con).  I really liked both the burger and the fries, which were not greasy and had potato flavor (as opposed to shortening flavor).

Anyway, burger *and* fries both good?  That's one in the win column for me.  I hereby demand that they open one of these in San Jose or parts nearby.

Got a black bean burger here during Halloween weekend. Place was packed because of Monster Mash. But the service was ok, one woman was walking by my table and I asked her if I could have a cup for water, and she came back with one immediately. Usually at fast food places they don't pay any attention to you once you've paid.

Now on to the food: I also ordered a side order of Smash fries. The side was truly a side, it was very small. Think maybe slightly larger than a Happy Meal size fries. Not exaggerating. Tasty but way too small for a french fry order. Maybe it would be ok if there were portion sizes so I could have gotten a larger order if I was hungry for it.

The black bean burger was ok. Too large for the patty, the "meat" to "bun" ratio was off. The burger was tasty though and came with fresh fixings.

Too messy to eat though and in the end a good amount of the patty ended up uneaten.

I guess I was trying to compare this to 5 Guys, Shake Shack, In N Out, the top fast food burger places, and it comes up lacking.

    So-so.

With a name like Smashburger, you'd think it would be some sort of earth-shattering experience. The only thing earth-shattering about it was the price. I spent in excess of $12 for a burger, fries and a drink.

This place is basically a glorified fast food joint, with trendy furniture and pretentious employees. I went there with a group at about 4:30 pm on a weekday and there weren't that many people there. I had some 20-something employee with a knowing look on his face ask me if I had been there before (with the smug implication that if not, BOY OH BOY was I in for a MIND-BLOWING experience).

After learning that I could have gone to In and Out TWICE for what I was paying, it took about 12-15 minutes for the food to come out (so much for my description of it as "fast food").

What had been advertised as "tender, crispy fries tossed in rosemary, olive oil and garlic" ended up being these lukewarm, NOT crispy, very thinly sliced fries that one would have to strain to taste any of the promised ingredients. They were not good.

The burger I ordered was the "BBQ, Bacon and Cheese", which, like the fries came out cooler than one would hope for. A hamburger should be served piping hot. This one was within the acceptable range (if I had been at Wendy's) but cooler than it should have been. The beef was clearly high quality and cooked as promised. The barbecue sauce was not great, and too sweet to be used as a condiment on a burger. For whatever reason, I ended up with crispy onions on one half and bacon on the other. This is the result of someone in the back not caring about presentation.

One of my group, similarly dissatisfied, commented that if he was going to ingest three days worth of calories in one sitting, that it should be worth it.

    This wasn't.

Half way through someone I think was the manager came by to ask how everything was, and I couldn't think of anything productive to say at the time, as I was so unhappy about my meal. I should have addressed this stuff with him at the time, but figured I'd get kicked out for yelling and screaming. Besides, I didn't get the impression that he really cared about my meal. He had a look that said: "I care about you thinking that I care about your dining experience".

So, Smash Burger...if you're listening: Thicker fries, more garlic on the fries, get the toppings evenly distributed, serve the burger hot.

This burger blows, the chicken and the burger are really freakin salty.  Word has spread among the deer community and soon they will travel from far and wide to taste these amazing rumored salt licks of downtown San Diego.   So fear not when you see a pack of deer loitering on the corner.

The salad had a glob of dressing just sitting in the middle of the salad like some bird with a vendetta just flew over my salad and was saying, yeah f**k you!  Plus, they have this obsession with bacon in every salad they have, they think just throw some bacon in there and that will make it good, someone there fancies themselves a michelin star chef and bacon their secret winning ingredient.

Lets get real, no one is expecting much service from some cheap burger joint, but while the people that work here do try hard to give good service, they can't even complete the simplest of tasks without having to collectively use 100% of their brain power to accomplish pressing a gigantic cheese button on the screen.   Seriously, last time I went in, it took the guy 10 minutes to put in a very complicated order of 2 chicken sandwiches and after what felt like going through a bad root canal, he still got the order wrong.  Everytime I have been in, there has been a line, for no other reason but the people taking your order can barely read.  I mean, they set these places up to be completely idiot proof and this place manages to screw it up constantly.

They have gotten my order wrong all 3 times I went in and the food was salty and disgusting all 3 times.  Man, I just can't ever bring myself to ever go here again unless I am on deaths doorstep from malnutrition or I want to put my blood pressure through the roof and have a heart attack.  I guess it's my fault, I didnt think it was going to be as good as Burger Lounge or In n Out, but I didnt realize Smashburger was just another Burger King, I thought it was going to be slightly better than that.

I always thought burger was just a burger until Smash burger where I learned quickly that not all burgers are created equal.  First time to this establishment and instantly fell in love with this place~!!  Ordered 1/2 lbs classic smashburger w/ smash fries (a must try item) and I was shocked and awed by the shear size of the burger.  The cheese blanked the massive beef patty as pickles, tomatoes, and lettuce presented itself as a personal culinary challenge for myself.  Each bite was heavenly and smash fries was divine~!!

ps. TRY the smashfries (A MUST: trust me)

This place is really, really good. The hamburger was tastefully done, not overcooked and a solid sized patty. Fries weren't anything special. Milk shake was solid and it comes in the mixer so you get leftover mix! That might just be exciting to me, but it also helps if you're sharing with a spouse or significant other. My wife had the turkey burger which was equally good, if you're interested in that. They also serve beer. Overall, great pricing for what you're getting and far more worthwhile than fast food at a little bit more than the price. I would definitely come back and will probably seek it out if I'm in the vicinity of one.

The veggie patty is way too salty.  Probably not the best review for a burger place but I don't eat meat.  :)

    Great grub!

For a little over $5, you get an flavorful burger and for a couple bucks some delicious sides!

Favs: Baja Burger, San Diego Burger, Chili Dog, Haystack Onion, Fries.. and you can always order a la carte and create your own.

Location:  Could be better, but everything in downtown is walkable, so it's not that back.

Note: They also serve beer and wine... and for 4 bottles of beer for $10.99 in downtown those are great prices for drinks before you head out to your next spot.

Sidenote: Not sure if it's just me, but I was freezing in there, might not be a bad idea to bring a light sweater.

    This place is so bad!!

I always get the bean burger sometimes i get it San Diego style which is suposed to come with avocado...well, their idea of avocado is 3 tiny, thin slices that are hard as a rock.

Another time i ordered just the bean burger an added avocado (i thought this way would get me a little more) and they charged me $1.50 for avocado. When i got home and opened my burger i noticed AGAIN there was barely any on there.

When i tried to call the store some guy (who seemed stoned) told me to come back and that they would make me another one.

I think something as simple as a burger should be made right the first time. I don't like this place and the staff is really not helpful.

During a Jersey Shore marathon the other day I got a mad craving for Smashburger and remembered that this one opened up over in the East Village not too long ago. What better time to check it out than post Pauly D and the Sitch bringing home grenades.

This go around I ventured into uncharted Smash-a-tory and ordered the avocado club chicken sandwich from the left side of the menu. It was good and a hell of a lot closer than a trip up to Del Mar or La Jolla, which is where their other locations are.

What I love about them compared to competitors like Burger Lounge is the diversity of their menu. They've got a great burger if that's what you crave but there's also options for the health conscious. Besides grilled chicken they've got veggie frites and other items that are a little easier on your waistline.

Also notable is the fact that the staff is really friendly and well trained. They seemed about as excited to be in the neighborhood as the people who live in the area which is exactly the type of folks you want taking your order. I've always been a fan of the Smash, but now that they're closer by I'm one happy guido.

The food is good (San Diego Smashburger, Spicy Baja Chicken and Sweet Potato Smashfries are my absolute favorites!).

However, the service is almost the antithesis of the food.  I work down the street from the Market location, so order there often.  More than 75% of the time the workers there get my coworkers' or my order incorrect.  They simply are not attentive, from not acknowledging us in line to leaving us on hold (for phoned in orders) for up to 7 minutes to leaving parts of our orders out.  While they're happy to replace our orders or give us the missing items, it's is an inconvenience for us to have to clock out of work again to remedy the problem.  Smashburger has never compensated us for their mistakes.

The service at Smashburger is some of the worst in the downtown area and if it wasn't for their food, my coworkers and myself would definitely not frequent this business.  My advice is to double check your order before leaving the store.

Never heard of this place since we're from the bay area, though we would give this place a try.

Overall, it's a burger, and it was pretty darn good, wish the buns were toasted or warmed though, they were cold, but everything else was hot.
Their sweet potatoes fries were crispy and piping hot, yum.

Great spot, prices were decent, one of the burger joints that are up there with all the other joints.
    Dog friendly on the patio!

Good burger.  They can sometimes get swamped by customers, but I suppose that is a good thing for the neighborhood.  Definitely will return.

Since this burger place is so similar to Burger Lounge I am going to do a side-by-side comparison:

Burgers: Both are delicious. You can really taste the quality in meat at both locations. While Smashburger has a larger selection of toppings I think BL edges them out in the overall taste dept. So my preference here depends on what kind of burger I'm in the mood to eat. Edge: Tie.

Fries: The type of french fry and quality is again very similar. They are both just basic boring fries and frankly aren't worth the calories you consume for them. While I can easily pass on both locations fries, BL fries are served plain while SB tops theirs off with a nice lemon/ dill seasoning. Edge: Smashburger.

Prices: I docked BL a star for their too high of prices at almost $8 for an a la carte burger. SB is right in line with what a fresh fast foodish type of burger should be at $6. Edge: Smashburger.

Service: The service at both locations is wonderful, there are really no complaints, but SB just went above and beyond across the board. They offered to refill my drinks, brought me out additional sauces and overall was just really really friendly. I actually had to go back to the register and ask for my receipt back so that I could increase the tip. Edge: Smashburger.

Overall, I would say the edge goes to Smashburger although you really can't go wrong with either place.

What lunatic goes to a burger joint and orders a black bean veggie pattie? ME!! My mistake too, because honestly the veggie pattie was about what you would expect: bland and weird. Overall a three star veggie mess that fell apart before I could even take a solid bite. Also, I asked them to hold the cheese but unfortunately my bean burger came out slathered in queso.

We ordered small fries also, and they were QUITE small, which was a bit disappointing. Not enough for two to share.

However, I did have a bite of my bf's classic burger and it was pretty delish I must say. The tomatoes were fresh and it was a filling meal. To be fair to Smashburger I may have to update this once I go back and eat a REAL burger.

I will say the service was exceptional and the prices fairly reasonable. If you're looking for a "healthy" burger, however, this is not the place (unless taste is not your thing).
