I absolutely love this place.
Fresh food, good coffee!
To my understanding, the soups are homemade. The chicken coconut soup is amazing.
I've also had:
- the tuna melt (yumm!)
- the fresh fruit salad
- the ham and cheese croissant (get 'em while they're hot!)
- the strawberry salad (so good!!)
..and you have GOT to try their homemade caramel corn!!!!!!
The staff here is so fun. They are always so friendly and happy to see you! -

I was attracted to this location based on the name of the café and expected a lot more than what I got. With a name like smart mouth café, you would expect some teasing from the guys at the til, however, received nothing. I had to push and instigate them and still received sorry excuses for smart mouthness. I came into a café called, "Smart Mouth Café" expecting some sassy comments. Get with the theme that you guys are aiming to be.
The lunch was reasonably priced even though they screwed up my order and before offering to correct it. They tried to get me to pawn off my sandwich off on my GF and make me spend more money to get the item I wanted.
I made a huge deal about the soup being gluten free and I ordered a cheese salad and instead I received the soup and the cheese sandwich. For someone who is trying to eat gluten free, why would I order the sandwich vs. the salad? They fucked up and didn't apply logic and then they were taking the lazy way at first to correct their mistake = not impressed.
My friend ordered her drink that tasted burnt. I believe her when she says that her drink tasted burned as she orders the same thing from other establishments. I felt bad for her and I've never seen someone with a Buckly's cough syrup face after drinking coffee.
It was very spacious and nicely laid out and relaxed. They were playing soccer on the television instead of hockey which was a huge plus for me. -

Great regular coffee. Chatty guys behind he counter who aren't afraid to tease.
If you go early on a week day be sure to say 'hi' to the regulars Cecil and Tony. -

If you are looking for a fresh sandwich and soup in Gastown, this is your place! Soups, sandwiches and dessert are made in house each day. Grilled to perfection the sandwiches come with great veggies and meat option. Soups are tasty and warm and the atmosphere is inviting and very friendly. I am not a coffee guy but the beans here are supposed to be great too!

I love to see a unique cafe in trendy Gastown.
I was in the neighborhood on business and I popped in for a coffee and breakfast. The breakfast wrap was "so-so" but the coffee was good and the cafe has a nice atmosphere.
I'll reserve the deeper reviews for the locals, but I'd recommend it as a cute place to stop by for some coffee. -

I'll admit it, I went here purely because of the name. I'm easy like that ;D Went in during the morning rush hour, but was served quickly enough. The latte was a little bitter, but sugar was on hand, and then it tasted real nice! Sadly I had no time to stop off, as it looks like it has a lot of character! Multi-floored, with some great spots for people watching (which never gets boring :P).
If you get 9 stamps, you get a free coffee! More places need to do this. The guy this morning punched mine twice (a co-worker says it's my accent that helps, if only!). -

Stopped in for breakfast while in town from the States, delighted at the flavors and the creativity of the menu. Had a wrap, great combo of flavors and a generous portion. Coffee was good, strong and very aromatic.
We'll be back next time we're north. Cheers. -

The quotes on the chalkboard are funny (especially the ironic one about what my mother thinks of me). The coffee is good. The food is good. The Galettes are great.
A bit old school grunge rather than fresh contemporary but open early which works for me and always friendly staff. Needs a bit of an updating from the former concept rather than just new signage and a few small chalkboards. The 'smart mouth' part could be expanded a bit more into their decor.
The lunch food is a bit too cellophane wrapped for me but does look fairly good.
Overall if you are looking for homegrown not corporate and open early, S&M would be a good bet. Oh added the & sign. Whoops. -

I eat lunch here a lot and figured it was time to holla for my peeps at Smartmouth! I've never had a bad experience: the owner is friendly and chatty, the food is delicious (turkey, swiss on cranberry bread and a cup of chicken curry soup!) and the coffee expertly barista'd. It's not a place that I'd hang out for a long time but I notice some people camp out with their laptops and pj's.
Smartmouth is a great place if you're looking to simply "grab a bite to eat" in the neighbourhood. If you're looking for something more, then you want the Pourhouse, Chill Winston, 6 Acres or the Greedy Pig...all within walking distance. -

Looking for an alternative to your typical breakfast downtown? I'm a big fan of the sausage egg wrap, and their coffee doesn't disappoint. Some really nice panini as well.
I wouldn't necessarily want to eat-in, it's a pretty dark environment. -

I really liked the staff here on my visit. Not exactly possessing a smart mouth, but definitely very chatty and witty. There weren't that many people there when I went so they were able to spend a couple minutes chatting.
I got their Cafe Mocha and it was pretty strong. I quite liked it. My friend got their iced matcha and it was just like drinking green tea ice cream but better.
They have free wifi and I can definitely see myself spending a couple of hours here if I ever need to kill time downtown. -

Was strolling Gastown today during the downpour. Saw the Smartmouth sign and heard great things about this cafe from some friends so I thought I'd give it a try.
Nice homey looking cafe with lots to choose from in the display, but I was here for a coffee today.
Ordered a medium roast coffee and espresso. Espresso looked well pulled but was very dark tasting. Not my favorite thing in a coffee. The drip was ok but tasted stale. -

I never knew the foamy loveliness of lattes - the kind that can lift you up from another rainy day - until Smart Mouth graced my hands with a heart-warming cup'a milky joe.
This is such a neighbourhood place. You can see it in the co-inky-dinks [enter screechy girly voice] "ohmahgawd! how ARRRREEE YOU?!" *gigantic bear hug* and especially with the playful staff that will chat with you about anything from weather to the organic food movement. This may be why it's a sufferer of HSS but for me, it's always worth the wait.
Seating is abundant in the 2 floor loft-style cafe, so park your tokhes while you contemplate ordering one of their famous cinnamon buns after you have already devoured a Giordini panini with a side of split pea soup.Listed in: Hippie Service Syndrome

I'm actually a little disappointed that there was no smart mouthing from the staff. Not even after I made a bad joke about my 12 oz coffee (I thought they were confirming it would cost me $12). *Sigh. But there was the girl who blatantly budged ahead of me in line. It was noticeable- I was the only other person there ;p
If I was looking to escape the light - this would be a great space. Perhaps for a later in the day/evening fix, but I like to take my iced Americano with a second lump of natural light. -

On a Super Super SUPPPPPER hot day, I decided to stop into Smart Mouth with my buddy whom I had not seen in forever to grab a cold coffee drink - The Java smoothie just sounded tempting.. and boy did it taste like coffee goodness. It was a coffee blended base with ice, and to my surprise tasted like there was strong espresso in it. I definitely got a good kick out of it.
My buddy got a panini which looked and tasted delicious (from what he told me). Along with the sandwich that they heat up and bring to your seat, there's always an extra piece of fruit or garnish for you. Nice little treat. The patio chairs outside were hot, and even with the canopy, I wasn't able to hide from the shade.. but it's summer - it's ALLLL GOOD. -

Ahhh... a table out front and the perfect Capp. A planter box straddling a window frame, it's plants spilling out onto the table grabbing at the late season sun. Passing tourists curiously follow a Capoeira troupe preparing to perform on the closed off street.
It feels like Old Montreal here. I love the contrast in architecture. I gazed across to a neglected building and wondered what factors have to come together to get weeds to grow sideways out of a brick wall?! Just next to this an updated office building with it's shiny windows. This area really has a lot of character and Smart Mouth is the perfect perch.
Lot's of seats, great coffee, free wireless, sammies to eat and local treats... What more do you need?1 Previous Review: Show all »

I get it...places these days need a gimmick...I can totally appreciate that..but I have to tell you that Smart Mouths gimmick is anything but smart..
The former Luna Cafe...which still has the Luna signage (you might want to work on that) has now become the Smart Mouth Cafe...at first I didn't really get the name but once I entered and stood in line to order some lunch I was unfortunate enough to find out why the name came to be...basically everyone behind the counter is loud and obnoxious...creative??..more like REALLY annoying...they sing along with the radio...talk smack to each other and swear like truckers..no offense to truckers...
We ordered 2 Giardino sandwiches and waters....the cashier took like 4 mins to ring it in..not really sure what he was doing but he seemed to be pushing alot of buttons?..it was weird..
We sat by the door as their were not many seats open...it was a chilly day and was even snowing at one point. Soon after taking our seat one of the said loud and obnoxious "smart mouths" came and propped open the door and walked away. He didn't even consider the fact that 2 patrons were sitting right there. We had to get up and move finally because our fingers were getting to numb to hold onto the sandwiches...
Two sandwiches and a water came to $16 and the price we paid to hear grown men swear and berate each other really has no value nor should it...If the sandwich hadn't have been pretty tasty this would have been a total right off but the get 2 starts based on the food.. -

For some reason, the baristas of Smart Mouth were shocked that I ordered my coffee iced on a very hot day. Having none in stock, they begrudgingly poured the hot coffee over ice. Perhaps Canadians don't drink iced coffee as much as Americans.
Despite this, the coffee was pretty great. The atmosphere was surprisingly chill, but maybe they just liked me because I have tattoos. It's a great alternative to the Starbucks down the street and all of the Tim Horton's. -

I really like this place. I managed to avoid it for years but I'm glad I finally went in for a coffee. They didn't have much for vegans, though they did have a vegan bar (tasted healthy, bleh)... but the service was awesome. I know they're supposedly sassy there, but I actually found the two guys who were working to be friendly, approachable, and absolutely willing to help me out with everything I needed. Great atmosphere too.

I haven't had a good look around Water Street in the daylight hours since my lunch breaks when I worked at the short-lived Vancouver Wax Museum as a teenager. That must have been in 2001. Maybe Luna Cafe was around back then, I can't remember. Had a late breakfast there yesterday, and then I logged onto yelp only to find it isn't called Luna Cafe anymore despite the signage. Slightly confusing, but the veggie egg wrap with salsa and a slice of pineapple and watermelon on the side was substantial and tasted great. I'd say a satisfactory trade-in for my five dollars and fifty cents.

Could not ask for a better espresso in that area.Very rich and not bitter, they take the time to make it right .Right up there with Coffee House Northwest in Portland.

Tasty coffee from organic beans. Super friendly staff, the owner has a cool story (left corporate, busy job, to run a coffee shop). Not as dark inside as I was expecting, but then again, it was rainy outside so there wasn't much contrast I guess! I love the hilarious quotes on the billboard outside. OH! And the paninis look AMAZING!!! They look fresh and loaded with good stuff (as opposed to those scrawny ones... like the one I got at Salty Tongue last week). Good spot! Beats the 'Bucks! ; )

Since I work in Gastown I go here for my morning coffee about three days a week, and I usually go for lunch once a week. The coffee is great, and the sandwiches are pretty tasty. I've never had the soups, but my coworker often has them and has had only great thing to say. It's a little on the pricey side for what you get quantity-wise, but the quality is definitely there. Staff are not the friendliest, but they're not necessarily rude either, pretty indifferent I suppose. In the end, if you're looking for a really good cup of coffee, give Smart Mouth a try.
