Skips
Des Moines Iowa
With Skips it's just best to get down to it. When we arrived at Skips we found that it was located in an old house which is different from most restaurants these days. The inside was dark yet the lighting at the table was very adequate which made for a nice combination, lots of dark grain wood which makes the place feel warm and comfortable. I will admit that at first the waitress made me nervous when asked what they were known for and she said everything I was quite skeptical and thought she either didn't know or was lying. However in the end she ended up guiding those who asked to very good choices. She was attentive and my water glass never got below a half. When the salads arrived I got the feeling we were in for a good night. All of the dressings but the French we were told were made in house. (who would ever order French) The raspberry vinaigrette was one of the best I've had. They also brought bread to the table which was also extremely good and I am not much of a bread guy. When the food arrived I was extremely happy with the portion sizes but the moment of truth was how did it taste? At our table we had the following:
Grilled Top Sirloin served on grilled sourdough and topped with onion rings
It was on the menu as a sandwich and served open faced. You could order this as a steak instead of a sandwich and be very happy, great taste and really a good value.
Lemon & Garlic Shrimp garlic and shrimp sautéed in a lemon butter with broccoli on linguini
Very large portion, loads of shrimp which along with the broccoli were cooked to perfection.
Jalapeno Cream a spicy cream sauce on linguini
All I can say it hot!
Chicken Alfredo breaded chicken tenders tossed in an Alfredo sauce and served with garlic toast on linguini
When the words breaded chicken tenders are used it makes me think of fast food. This was far from the case in fact my wife used seldom used pharse (this reminds me of your mom's chicken) and trust me those words are almost never uttered.
Walleye pan-fried golden brown
This was my dish and in my humble opinion the best at the table. The tilapia looked sexier on the menu being coconut and pecan crusted served with a honey mustard glaze but the waitress without hesitation said go with the Walleye and boy was she right. It was by far the best piece of fish I've had where you could not feel the ocean breezes on your face. Large portion, nice crust and great flavor my daughter who is not real keen on fish tried it and liked it. It was served with a side of steamed broccoli which again was cooked perfectly.
Skips has easily earned a spot in my top 5 favorite places to eat anywhere in the state of Iowa. The only problem is I may never try anything else on the menu. In the end the waitress may have very well been right it looks like everything on the menu is great. You have to try this place just don't go the nights I want to so I don't have to wait.

We first stumbled upon this place because we pass it every Sunday heading to church. I liked the look of the exterior and had to find out what type of place 'Skip's' was. I was happy to find good reviews on Yelp for it.
We went on a Friday night (around 7:00 pm) and the place was busy. There were many people waiting outside for a table. We were told a 30 min wait for two but then the host (who was the nicest host I think I have ever encountered) saw an open table in the bar area and asked if we wanted to sit there. Already, this place was off to a good start. A 30 min wait down to less than a min!
The place is a bit on the dark side but has the appropriate lighting to not really be dark at your table. There is a rich wood interior which I loved. We did feel like we were young compared to the rest of the crowd although, towards the end of our meal, some younger people started trickling in.
This place has really really nice staff. I actually think they are maybe the nicest staff of any restaurant I have been to. Our waiter was great and right on time with everything! As I mentioned before, the host was soo nice and even the other staff when I asked where the bathroom was, was more than willing to help!
Ok, now what you came to really read about, the food! Based on everyone's recommendations, we got the Smoked Chicken Nachos to start. We had the smaller portion but for 2 people, it was still rather large. They were good but we were disappointed with the amount of chicken on them (it seemed hard to find the chicken). I hate to say it but Jethro's nachos beat these out. Next came our salads and bread. The salads had good size to them and I really enjoyed their house Honey Mustard Salad Dressing. It was very flavorful and not heavy. The bread was delicious! Warm and soft! For our main entree's we had the Jalapeno Cream Pasta and Bowtie Creole Cream Pasta. Both were delicious! They had great flavor and just in case you are wondering, the Jalapeno one was hotter than the Bowtie Cream one. These came with garlic bread which were ok to me (a bit salty) but my husband liked it a lot.
Skip's is a place I would come back to again. Not only for the food but also the hospitality! -

I went to Skip's at the recommendation of my friends. It was worth every penny. Their much heralded nachos live up to every ounce of the hype. Should you be someone so inclined to partake in nachos, you should absolutely not hesitate for a moment in ordering them! I had my doubts, being a dubious foodie and was proved wrong instantly.
Other dishes we sampled on this evening were the mussels appetizer (which I recommend highly also!) and the seared tuna which was also delicious. Everything was delicious, well prepared and well presented. We really enjoyed our trip there and I'm fairly certain you will too should you decide to visit Skip's. -

The nachos are the best thing on the face of the earth. Everything else is great too.
Other people on here are whiners. The is one of the best places to eat in Des Moines. -

Just ok, standard fare similar to Chili's or Bennigens. Lots of fried or fatty entrees. Popular with the locals. Pretty dark inside with clean but worn restrooms.

I really wanted to like it. Friendly host. Neat bar. Only reason for two stars. I ordered the special. I was told a chicken breast marinated in balsamic vinaigrette over veggies. Sounds fresh and healthy right? What I got was a breaded and fried chicken breast where the only taste was grease. It was over carrots. I don't even like carrots. BF got a salad and wasn't impressed. He thought the service wasn't very good. I thought it was fine although funny she didn't ask how the food was. $10 for most things on the extensive lunch menu...everything sounded good but I won't be back to try it again.

Really disappointing.
Skip's used to be one of my favorite restaurants but my recent experience was really disappointing. It was a busy night but the bartender was quick and attentive, and the drinks were good. After we sat down the service lagged but it was busy so we were patient.
For dinner I ordered the seared ahi tuna based on the waitress's suggestion. In hindsight, I think they were just trying to get rid of the last of the tuna from the weekend before. I love seared ahi but the seared ahi at Skip's was really disappointing. It wasn't bad but it just didn't taste good. I was starving and for $18 I was expecting a great meal. Instead I got a piece of fish which tasted like it had been thawed and re-frozen. I mentioned this to the waitress who said she would let the kitchen know. Whether she did or not, I don't know. She never said another word about it. Nope, nothing.
Then to top off my dining experience the waitress 'accidentally' charged me, and my friend both, for the side salad which came with our entrees. We pointed this out and she removed the charge. We left and decided not to have dinner at Skip's again. -

Ordered the baby back ribs to go. Not the best I've had, not the worst. They were a-ok, and thus, the 3 star rating. the cole slaw and mashed weren't to die. the diner was fairly packed when I walked in. wait staff seemed pretty busy, but the man behind the bar was attentive and took my order right away. restaurant is located nearby the airport - you can't miss it, as it looks like a big two story house from the outside.

One of my favorite places to eat in Des Moines. Great prices for great food with excellent service. Try the shrimp linguini, no wait, the bbq pork sandwich, no wait, everything's good.
