Skipper Ben's is a bed and breakfast, with a wonderful, limited menu restaurant in what was the dining room of a restored home in a charming village of Cupids, Newfoundland.
We've eaten here several times, both breakfast and dinner, and we can tell you, it's one of the nicest, most romantic meals you can imagine. The town itself is a charming fishing village, with large and small vessels docked nearby. Across the channel is a steep rock wall. The water laps quietly along the shore, across from Skipper Bens.
The skipper is really Viola, the chef and co-owner. Breakfast is usually cereal and juice, followed by a poached egg, toast, potatoes, coffee, and fruit, served impeccably. She makes the jams, usually a local partridgeberry. Dinner shines, with her choice of salmon or cod, chicken, and if you order ahead, something else, like a lobster, or fishcakes. The bread is made and baked every morning in perfect mini loaves. Soup or salad is also very delicious, like you might get in a neighborhood bistro in the bay area. And dessert is always a crepe with blueberries or partridgeberries, or a choco cheesecake.
Sometimes she seems frazzled, because she preppares all the dishes herself, but in Cupids, no one is in a hurry. People are here from the capital, ST. Johns, an hour away, to celebrate a birthday, or travelling through from who knows where.
What sets Skipper Ben's apart is not only that the food is a cut above much of the food we've had in Newfoundland, but the kindness, humor, and pride of ownership, that shows forth in every detail.
Come to Newfoundland and stay and eat at Skipper Ben's!
