    HOT, DIGGITY, DOG!
    "DESTINATION" HOT DOGS.

I used to pass through Anderson, SC often on business. I HAD to have a hot dog (or four) for lunch at Skin Thrashers!

    HOURS: OPEN: 11 a.m to 6:50 p.m., Tuesday - Saturday. CLOSED: Sunday & Monday.

WHERE IS IT? 203 Hudgens Street is the original location. It is located smack dab in the middle of an old residential neighborhood. One has to really want to find this restaurant to eat here. GPS is invaluable. It is well worth the trip.

WHAT THE BIG DEAL? Skins is a landmark diner in this area having been in business at this location since 1946. When I first started going here their menu was very, very basic: hot dogs, chips, six oz. Cokes and nothing else. Their soft, fresh buns are cut through the brown side of the bun. They don't look like the usual hot dog bun. It doesn't make them taste any better, but the appearance is unique. You won't find this anywhere else. (Picture here:  http://skinshotdogs.co...)

BOILED? ROASTED? FRIED? The hot dogs are boiled.

CHILI TODAY, HOT TAMALE: Chili is absolutely fantastic. They wouldn't serve slaw on their hot dogs - just bun, hot dog, mustard, chili, and onions. Now one can get slaw as a side order.

    MENU: http://skinshotdogs.co...

ATMOSPHERE: This restaurant is very small and it is ALWAYS crowded at lunchtime. This is the type of place where the mayor of Anderson might be sitting next to you at the counter, and an auto mechanic sitting on the other side. A totally diverse, well behaved, crowd.

SUDS: Recently they started serving beer, but the limit is two.

DON'T SWEAR! There is a placard on the wall that says, "The language that you use here is the language that you use in Church." Translation: Curse and get rowdy and they will toss you out! Since the place usually has a few policemen eating - that is not an idle threat.

LOOK AT THAT! It is quite a sight seeing the waitress coming with eight or ten hot dogs lined up down her arm to serve customers at the counter. I've never seen them drop one either.

THEY'RE FAMOUS: Featured in "A Hot dog Program" on PBS, (http://www.imdb.com/ti...) Gourmet, Fortune, and Money magazine.(Jimmy Carter ate here during his presidency.)

CONCLUSION: If you love hot dogs, this is a "must go to," destination restaurant.

Nice hot dogs!  Love their chili and slaw.  Ice cold Coke in a bottle.  When I lived in Anderson, I had lunch here at least once a week.

My Aunt lives in Anderson and I live in NJ She 1st took me to Skins about 3 years ago. Their hot dogs are out of this world. I got one with chili on it and the chili was so good I had to take some back to her house to eat for dinner!

I insist on going to "Skin's" whenever I am at home! It's in the old Mill Area of Anderson. Don't let the neighborhood fool you...these are nice folks that just want to sell you a dawg. I like to sit at the lunch counter and I can say that I've never sat at a table so I don't know what that is like...could be a totally different place. My Skin's is the kind of place, you walk in, they say "what'll ya'ave" and since there isn't much to choose from you say you'll have two chili dawgs with mustard! There are no fancy paper plates...just a piece of pager to cradle the precious cargo from the kitchen to your spot at the counter! After you order said precious cargo materializes in less than 90 seconds...they keep them comin' too if two isn't enough! Now, save room for pound cake, cause if you're polluting yourself with two chili dawgs (or more!) you can damn well eat some pound cake too...you don't get home often! Once you've settled in...enjoy the endless clippings about Skin's, Clemson and the general greatness of a town like Anderson (the first to have electricity in SC!)! Oh and don't forget to watch the endless parade of characters too. This is a fine dining establishment that is good enough for the Mayor, the Sheriff, high caliber judges and important people and every single citizen in between!  Lots of great plans have been hatched in a place like Skin's! For me, it's home!
