After walking by many times on my way get my nails done at Good Looks Salon, and reading her awesome reviews it was time to try Ilona.
I am so glad I did!! Her space is small but relaxing, clean and efficient.
I learned a few things too - like how long to wait after shaving before waxing. Good to know.
I think I'll become a regular here...

A couple years ago, my usual place for waxes was booked solid. I tried to find another spot that was reputable, clean and could take me. This place was available, close to work and based on the yelp reviews I decided to try it. But then the day came and It was so painful! No gloves were worn during the process and she didnt even hold my skin taut before pulling the wax off. I even lost some skin in the process. So all in all, Ive had better and have learned to stick with my usual spot.

Every sane woman cringes at the thought of waxing. this could be for any part of the body. especially the nether region. i promptly started my ardous search for the right person right here on yelp. Being that i work less than 2 blocks away, i thought it might be too good to be true. I contemlated splurging on a more upscale salon but there was this pull for me to try this spot instead.
so i finally called to book. no worries if there is no answer. she is a one woman shop, and is very quick about calling back.
the day finally arrived. the dreaded Brazilian wax job. i begrudgingly set out. no one wants to pay to get hurt, right? and overall, the office was very clean. she was very quick about the whole process. and since i'd popped 2 advils, i walked away surprisingly unscathed. i even spent the rest of the afternoon shopping.
i have been back consistently every 2 months or less. =) -

New York, NY
I wavered between 3 and 4 stars for this place. I got a Brazilian and eyebrow wax done here.
So.. After reading the reviews I came to check this place out. I'm from NYC just working out here for 3 months so finding replacement salons has been challenging. Even though NYC is infamously expensive, I've found everything out here to be much more so.
For example, the Brazilian cost $60. I've paid up to $70 before (not in NYC) but at least it wasn't as painful as this one. She didn't prepare me for it and kind of took me by surprise, and it was the most painful wax I have ever had done. And I'm a Brazilian regular! However, Ilona is efficient, meticulous, and professional. So while my poor lady parts are still hurting the next day, she did go as fast as she could while getting literally every single hair out.
The eyebrows were also a little painful.. But she did a lovely job cleaning them up and trimming and shaping them.
Ilona is very lovely and let me run off to the ATM when I tried to pay with card. Make sure you have cash or check! She won't take cards. I don't know if I'll come back again, I'm on a mission to find something a little cheaper. Or just wait til I go back home for my $39 Brazilian and $7 eyebrows. -

i've been going to Skin Fantastik and Ilona for a couple of years now and im not quite sure why i haven't ever written a yelp review.
...is it because i'm shy and don't want the world to know where i get my lady parts waxed? uhmm no....in this type of situation, there is NO room for bashfulness. is it because i want to keep her as a secret, all to myself? NO because her nimble, efficient hands work so fast that i'm sure she could wax half of the FiDi in one fell swoop. is it because she's just OK? ....NO, because she is GREAT!
i know why.
its because i've been such a happy customer, with no complaints for so long that i just got comfortable. it has become the norm for me. BUT last month, before venturing off on a bathing suit-centric vacation i needed to get cleaned up, and unfortunately Ilona was out of town and timing didnt work out. so i went to Stript on Union St. i had heard great things. they give you wine, and numbing spray, and disposable underwears...all things that you don't get at Skin Fantastik, but all things that are just fluff and completely unnecessary (well, minus the wine. always). but they kinda sucked (that experience deserves its own review) and it made me realize how FABULOUS, professional, well-priced, clean and flexible Ilona is.
these 5stars have been a long time coming!

I had to really mull over how to write this review. I didn't want it to sound crude or graphic, so I tried to err on the conservative side. Please PM me if you need more details.. :)
I chose this place based solely on yelper recommendations, as it would mean a 40-minute trip for me on BART. I've been interested in getting a Brazilian for quite some time but had to first work up the nerve! I booked the appointment after playing phone tag for a while, but Ilona was very nice and very prompt about getting back to me.
I arrived for my morning appointment tingling with anticipation and secretly hoping I wasn't about to have my lady bits permanently detached from my body. I've never waxed anything before! I arrived early, and busied myself with a magazine while I waited for her to finish with the previous gal. I didn't hear any horrible sounds, which was a good sign. Finally it was my turn. She was very professional throughout the entire process, and I was surprised that it didn't hurt nearly as much as I had previously thought. We chatted during it, and I know that helped take my mind off it as well. It was over relatively fast, and the results are stunning. Me likey!
I'm so glad I took the plunge, and will be back in 3-4 weeks.
I added a picture of where you go in from the street..hopefully it will help someone else find her! You enter through the door in the middle and stay straight. You can either take the elevator to the right, or stairs to the left. She is on the second floor. If you need to use the restroom, that's down the hall. She'll give you a key.
After all that had transpired, I headed out the door and up Sutter..my next destination was lunch at E & O...read on...Listed in: Sinners are much more fun., Here kitty, kitty!

I am hairy.
Ilona knows how to deal w/ hair. In fact, from the look of her hairless face (plus eyebrows and eye lashes), she prob despises mustaches, peach fuzz and all that jazz.
Because of her innate ability to find and tear off all the "bad" hairs - and her pleasant but not chatty bedside manner - I am a big fan. This combined with my unpromiscuous ways - will keep me with Ilona for a long while. After all, I ain't showing just anyone my lovely lady areas. -
Review from Mimi T.
I was in a search for a good waxing place but somewhere reasonable, too. I found Ilona on Yelp and it turns out she is a block away from my work.
Her space is very clean and she does a very detailed job. Her waxing is just as good as ones I've had at Belle a Pelle but costs about half of what they charge.
Five stars for Ilona!Listed in: "Loooking Good"!

I laid there apprehensive. Is she really going to do this upside down? How can she tell what my eyebrows will look like upside down? Should I have said more than just "natural-looking", will that be enough? I mean, it's been months since anyone's touched these. Can she find the natural arch even? What if she makes them too thin? I don't want them too thin. And she asked if I wanted them trimmed, and I said yes... but what if she doesn't notice that I don't really have hair on the tips, that if she trims them too much I'll only have HALF AN EYEBROW? I can't walk around with HALF AN EYEBROW. What if--
"OK," Ilona said, handing me a mirror.
Looking back at me, my eyebrows reflected back clean and sophisticated, natural--like a movie star. I could barely mumble an appreciative, "Thank you, these look amazing." It was my face, only better--much better.
Twenty dollars later (cash only) and I, of all people, look like a movie star. -

I had such a great experience here today. IIona was extremely nice and fit me into her very busy pre-holiday day. She was extremely fast and so far it looks like she did an amazing job. I will definitely be going back for brazilians in the future. Only giving 4 stars for now, have to see how the second visit goes. :)
Update - Again Ilona was absolutely amazing! This time I got my brows done. I love them! $75 for full Brazilian and Brows. -
Review from Gina K.
Ilona did a fantastic job. I called with less than 24 hours' notice and she was able to squeeze me in the next day--for some reason it was a really busy Tuesday and she only had 15 minutes to spare all day...which is probably why she seemed a little tired and untalkative. When I worked on the peninsula I would go to The Estheticians, and they made this first-timer really comfortable, but now that I've had a few waxes I was comfortable enough that Ilona's brusque manner didn't faze me. But she did a great job--didn't take off too much or too little, and there wasn't a single stray hair left behind. And it was only $30 for an extended (between regular and Brazilian) bikini wax.
My biggest complaint was with the elevator in her building--really old and took forever to come and the light didn't light up to show it was on its way. And a guy who worked there told me that it gets stuck a lot. Great....
My best advice: no matter how gentle the waxer, take Advil before you go! -

Went back today during my lunch break. I just love her efficiency and attention to detail. I'm also happy that she's so flexible with scheduling. I don't know how she magically just *knows* how to shape my brows by looking at them! Was in and out of there in 20 min. She's not talkative, but she gets the job done very well and I don't mind.
Today, I asked for more of a defined arch and I got it. Though it was a little surprising to me at first (since I'm so used to my boring boomerang-like shape with no edges), I think it's growing on me. I'm still glad I left the expertise to Ms. Peck, but I've never had this much of an arch!
Actually both times (today included), I've gotten a couple tiny acne-like bumps in my lip area. I think my skin around my lips is very sensitive and sometimes oily. She used this crazy-looking machine thing that apparently closes the pores and cleans the bacteria, and told me to use cortizone for a couple nights. On my way back to work I picked up some hydrocortizone at Walgreen's and put it on when I got back at the office. It seems to work and I haven't felt irritation since. :)
Remember, cash only and don't forget to tip!

I have been a fan of Bella Pelle for years, but have not been a fan of the prices as they seem awfully high especially in these trying times. Well an opportunity had came up where my fav girl at Bella Pelle was busy and I was forced to look elsewhere, which brings me to Skin Fantastik.
I was a bit hesitant because there is only one type of wax used which is the kind that needs cloth and I usually use the peel off wax to eliminate most of the pain for this tortuous ritual. It didn't matter the lady at Skin Fantastik knew what she was doing.
She was quick and extremely precise and the wax was really good, there was minimal pain. I am a converter, goodbye Bella Pelle, hello Skin Fantastik. And hello to the penny's I will be saving from switching. -

OK, first of all let me say I have been going to Ilona since I was 18, it will be 7 years on my birthday. And before that, I would often go with my mom to get her waxes so essentially Ilona has known me since I was a child. Ilona is the ONLY person I will let near my bikini area to do a Brazilian wax and I will never go to anyone else, if she ever retires I don't know what I'm going to do. I have always been pleased with her work and her in general. She is such a warm, caring and unbelievably funny person. If you talk to her, she'll talk to you.
When I began reading some of the reviews I was a bit taken back, and a bit upset because Ilona is great, she does a fabulous job and is a major perfectionist in her work. Which is something I love and something my friends love that go to her.
If you want quality work, then be a quality client. DO NOT expect all hair to be gone immediately, especially if you are custom to shaving; shaved hair is thicker and coarser than hair that has never been shaved. It will take a few wax sessions so the hair can grow out and become normal again. Once that is done, expect a VERY clean bikini wax. Sometimes the skin can become very dry, so I recommend using a moisturizer or lotion for the bikini area. Think about what you're doing to the area - of course its going to be dry especially if your skin isn't used to being waxed! :-)
She does work quick, but honestly their was a time when she took it slow on me and it hurt SOOO much worse than if she was quick - i asked her to speed it up... besides once the area is waxed it becomes numb and if she has to go over the area again, it doesn't hurt as bad.
I love Ilona a lot and I think she's great! Give her a chance! :-) -

Yay! I just found my new waxologist! Ilona rocks! My eyebrows are like a work of art. I can't wait to get my chach done too! Whoa, that did NOT sound right...
Update - Just as I suspected... amazing! Clean, quick, and (relatively) painless. What a relief to find someone who can make such a potentially awful situation a pleasant one! -
Review from Elaine W.
I've only gone here for Brazilian and brow waxing. Ilona is the esthetician of choice if you like your treatments to be fast and no-nonsense. She uses the old school soft strip wax, so definitely pop an Advil or two prior to your visit if you have a low pain threshold. Thankfully, she works extremely quickly. I barely have time to feel much discomfort during the process. The aftermath isn't too bad either. I'm always left with some wax residue...especially for Brazilian or bikini waxing, definitely take advantage of the removal lotion, wipes, and talcum powder that are offered in the treatment room, otherwise you risk leaving feeling chafed and sticky.
Compared to other salons that offer waxing in the Union Square area, Ilona's prices are pretty reasonable, and she gets you in and out quickly so it's convenient to go here especially if you work around the Financial District. She doesn't do online booking, but she's super prompt with returning phone calls and text messages. -

I have been going to Ilona for 4 years. She is awesome. She is quick, painless, flexible and accommodating. I get my brows waxed and either Brazilians or extended bikini waxes - - depending on my mood. Its good because she will do part of the bikini move on to something else and then if you want her to take more off once you are over the shock - she will.
She is also very flexible with her schedule. I am in and out of there in about 35-45 minutes and I pay between 60-75. A great value.
As for parking - I park in the White House Garage which is 2 blocks away on Sutter. -

Simplly to the point:
I called the day of my requested appointment. She was booked, but said she would try to fit me in and call me back. I was skeptical, but she indeed called back within 45 minutes and got me in. Service A+
Got there right on time, didn't have to wait 2 min, she was right on time. I expected 15 minutes of fussing over WTF to do with my insane unarchable brows. I have been gifted with Sylvester Stallone sad eyes with drooping eyebrows to match. For years I have been searching for the Angel who could brighten my eyes and relieve me from perpetual sad eyes. Usually the response is to thin the hell out of them into permanent marker strips that still reflect the original shape. After growing out many attempts at finding a SHAPE, any shape to my eyes, I was not expecting much from experience.
Ilona bless her outright honest heart, took the time (30 minutes total time) to evaluate the shape of my face at all angles before just tearing in.
With delicate but direct honesty she told me, arches, not going to happen(secretly crying inside, but why, why, can't I be like everyone else). But then she showed me what she could do to brighten and lift my downward almond eyes into mysterious orbs of intrigue(ok, happy to be unique now).
I am so happy she took the time and gave me options, and most importantly, asked me permission before. The price, unbelievably small for the large helping of A+++ service.
Want honest advice and a look that really reflects your face. Come to Ilona, she won't throw any stencils at you and give you the standard heave ho! -
Review from Nikki M.
I found Ilona through Kelli M. and other yelpers when I needed a quick brow wax/tint at lunch time and didn't feel like leaving my work hood mid-day.
Llona did a number of things right:
1. She was braver than most people are when I tell them I want the brows darker. I am really digging the light blonde hair with dark brows thing these days and most places I go tend to be too conservative. she went dark. super dark. Granted she went a little too dark for my skin tone and my coworker teased me for looking "angry" but I was being a pusher so I blame myself, not her. The dye was very long-lasting (great!) but it did lighten some.
2. She gave me a lash tint and for the first time in my blue-eyed life i didn't want to gouge my eyeballs out from the pain. This was virtually pain free.
3. My brow wax looked great
4. I didn't realize they are cash/check only and when I didn't have enough on hand, she said I could come back another day next week to pay so I could get back to work quickly. So thoughtful!
Ilona will do a great job with you. I am still loyal to Bella pelle as well and despite what other reviewers have said I found the prices pretty much the same. Still, I am thankful there is another option for me and only two blocks away from work! -

Ilona is away on vacation for two weeks, and I have to admit that me and my lady bits are a little sad without her.
Prior to my first appointment, I'd never waxed before and was filled with trepidation about getting it done. However, she quickly laid my doubts to rest, and several visits later, I don't think I'm going to pick up a razor again. She's quick without sacrificing thoroughness, and the room where she waxes is comfortable, clean, and smells nice.
It's also great that she's located right across Market from my office, so I can pop in during my lunch break. -

Bush-wacking is not necessarily the most pleasant of to-do's. But if it's on the agenda, Ilona is the woman for the job.
She is the ultimate professional and does a quick/neat/painless job and her facilities are clean/sanitary. She's meticulous about following up on messages and it's fairly easy to book an appt within the week - season dependent.
Location: walk into the building and up the stairs to the second floor in the building makes you feel like you're stepping back in time. Cash and check only! -

I would trust no one else but Ilona with my eyebrows. Let's face it they are in the middle of your face. You need them to look good and match. Some places just can't do that. She makes them perfect every time. Her place is clean and she's super sweet. I know she does a lot of bikini waxes too. Those customers seems to really love her also. I used to go to a really expensive place on Maiden Lane but her prices are much better and my brows have a nicer shape. She is aso right next to Montgomery bart station so it's easy to get to.

I went to Illona for my second Brazilian ever a year or so ago and now I am a repeat customer. The salon is very clean, she is extremely good at what she does, and she really makes you feel comfortable. I go to her on my lunch break to have my eyebrows done and a Brazilian about once a month and I am out the door within 30 minutes. Also, if you leave a message for Illona, she will respond very quickly and we even schedule through texts! She is very responsive, efficient, professional, comforting, and talented. I am so glad I found this salon and Illona!!!

I loooovvveee Skin Fantastik! I have gone to see Ilona twice now and she truly is *FANTASTIK*! Here are the reasons why:
1. Ilona is meticulous about waxing. She's efficient but thorough.
2. She's easy and fun to talk with -- which makes the process go by faster and the appointment more enjoyable.
3. The shop is clean and she does not double dip (my pet peeve).
4. Skin Fantastik's location is super convenient because it's in the heart of the FiDi -- a 3 minute walk from my work.
5. Prices are reasonable -- just make sure you to take cash/check with you since she doesn't accept credit cards.
6. It's easy to get an appointment -- just text her the time you want to go in and the services you want, and she'll text you right back and give you a few time slots to choose from. She's a one woman shop so she makes the appointments and does all the work.
7. She makes my eyebrows look awesome!
I've been looking for the perfect waxing place in SF for a long time and am so happy to have finally found it! I love Ilona! -

Note: I haven`t actually gone to Skin Fantastix yet, but I give her five stars for the great customer service so far even though it`s only been over the phone. Since I assume she was pretty busy I kept getting her answering machine both times I called, but she always called me back both times. She said that all spots were taken today, but there were some open spots tomorrow - and I guess she noticed the hesistancy in my voice since she asked if I`d like to call her back, which I did. After the second round of phone tag, she said that there was some cancellations today and would I like to come in at 4. I said yes, and now today I will be going in for my first brazilian. I will definitely come to yelp more about it later!
Also, since this is my first, I naturally had some questions - like the difference between a brazilian and an extended brazilian - and she was nice and patient with me the whole time...though i didn`t exactly get it at first! :P
Edit: 4/11/07
I meant to update this after I got the brazilian done or at least the day after...but I completely forgot. So there may be some things I`ve forgotten so take this review with a grain of salt.
Anyway, so I had trouble finding the place since there`s no sign outside of the building, plus you have to go inbetween two stores (one`s a cafe) from sutter street. I wandered around the block until just decided to called the lady. She guided me to the place, again being patient with me all this time.
So, the pros and cons of the entire session:
(+)She was professional - like I mentioned this was my first brazilian. After she ripped off the very first hairs, she asked if I was okay and could continue...to which I said yes.
(+)The bed spins - whee!!! That was the funnest part of the whole session.
(+)My skin was super smooth afterwards - much better results than shaving for sure!
(-)She was rather quiet...which was kinda un-nerving for me since I`m the type of person who likes to chat while getting my hair did and whatnot. But everyone`s different, so it`s all good.
(+ and -) I was happy with the results, but after I got home, I found that I had a few stray hairs here and there. Kinda sucks considering that I paid her to get most of the hair removed (save for the patch of hair at the top). Considering that she went over each area like 2-3 times, I`d thought that she would have gotten all the hair...oh well.
So overall, it was an interesting experience...not exactly a five star experience in my book. But if I ever get around to it, maybe I`ll get my legs waxed there sometime. -

The table was quite an experience! Swirling around and barely having to move was definitely interesting! Ilona gets right to it and is very precise in what she does. She is focused on doing the best job she can. I was confused with pricing hence the star off. I thought it was 30$ (like I had been paying in NYC at a great spa) but it ended up being 50$ for a brazilian. Also she doesn't take anything but check or cash which left my pockets pretty empty. I think it would be good to take credit cards when waxing can get pretty pricey! Otherwise she was very good and provided quick, nice service. I just wish the pricing was a little lower so I may have to reconsider going back or go more infrequently!

this is somewhat of an awkward thing to write about but i'm a big enough fan after just one visit that i don't care. so i've been wanting to find a place near my work to go to instead of my usual spot in the marina since i hate spending my weekend hours on these types of things or rushing home after work to make my appt so i yelped around and it led me to ilona. i admit, when i first walked into the partially hidden run-down building, i was a little skeptical and when i had to walk up the rickety stairs to the second floor i was even more doubtful but as soon as i saw the entrance to the place and walked in, all my fears subsided.
once inside, it is super warm and inviting and most importantly very clean that i felt immediately at ease. i won't go into any detail obviously but let's just say she is extremely professional and very thorough and sure it hurt a little but i mean come on it's to be expected right? just pop a tylenol beforehand if you need to but it definitely wasn't unbearable or anything. and she has this chair that swivels around the room that sort of made me feel like i was in an austin powers movie or something.
but the best part is that when it came time to pay, i hadn't realized it was cash or check only and didn't have enough money on me, she just told me to mail her a check and proceeded to give me her home address. i mean seriously who does that these days? i don't know if it's because she knows where i work and apparently a bunch of other people go to her too that made her so trusting but she didn't seem fazed by it at all.
i feel a little guilty venturing outside of my regular marina place but i can foresee myself coming back here more often and i even came out smelling like coconuts. now who doesn't love that?
