The BEST Indian food buffet in Victoria. All food very fresh and authentic tasting!  Good value for the price.  Go hungry so that you can get your monies worth.

I'm quite late in writing my reviews for our stay on Victoria BC and can't recall all of them, sorry, but Sizzling Tandor was definitely one of the best if not thee best place I ate. One must know though I love Indian so even a so-so Indian place could possible be a favorite, but ST when rated at other Indian place I've eaten is one to remember.

I had butter chicken and the spice was nice quite nice. I went with my bride, pops-in-law, step-mom-in-law and step-sister-in-law, but can't recall what they all ate but they all liked it that I remember. (I'm so proud of my bride she now rates Indian cuisine as a favorite)

The place is small but the adage good things come in small packages can mean and does so in the revised good restaurants come in small restaurants. Staff was average with a tad plus toward the positive side.

I had hoped to make a second visit to ST but time didn't allow, but if I ever find my self in Victoria and I have time only for one stuff the gut, ST will be the place I do the stuffing

This review is for the weekday lunch buffet only. Everything was OK but as with so many other buffets, there were some pretty significant shortcomings.

One of the biggest problems was the overburdened gentleman who was apparently the only person on staff who cleared tables, seated guests, took and filled drink orders, accepted payments and brought out naan bread. It was clearly too much for one person as he was working very hard but could not keep up. During our lunch neither our water nor our naan got refilled once during a 40 minute stay. We did see one staff member come out from the back about 3 times while we were there, but she didn't actually assist with anything. She came out, stared around with an unpleasant look, stayed idle for 5 minutes then disappeared again, having done absolutely nothing.

As far as the buffet food goes, there were some hard to ignore problems there too. The chicken curry was 2/3 full in the buffet, but it contained no actual chicken meat (I think it had been picked through), it just had bones in it. I watched the kitchen staff dump all the fresh pakoras (which were great when they were fresh) on top of the old ones and did not properly rotate stock, this is a concern both for health reasons and for quality control. One of the other dishes had some noticeably undercooked turnip in it. The daal was fine, the butter chicken was actually really good except for the unexpected bone I received.

One thing that really turned me off while I was there was that I watched an Indian family who was eating their food traditionally with their hands and no cutlery, which is totally fine, except that said family then went up to the buffet station and handled all the serving spoons with their still food covered hands without washing or even wiping as far as I could tell... yuck. (I realise this isn't explicitly the restaurants fault, but it surely affected my impression). I also watched the same family's table get served their fourth bowl of naan before we'd received our second. I was disappointed that there were no types of samosas in the buffet.

While the price was ok and the food wasn't terrible, I don't think I'll be returning for lunch buffet any time soon. I do have faith though, that if I were to return in the evening and order from the menu, it would be an entirely different experience.

Oh crap, there's a delicious Indian buffet restaurant located a block away from my office. This is dangerous.

I have yet to try any of Sizzling Tandoor's non-buffet items, but the buffet is possibly the best I have ever eaten at. The buffet contains fairly standard buffet items - butter chicken, korma, lamb vindaloo (i think), raita, tandoori chicken, chana masala. All delicious.

And the restaurant serves Naan to you in a basket straight from the Tandoor.

The buffet costs $12 and is only available at lunchtime. This is a fantastic value.

    Wow.
This place reminds me if about five other places I've been in the past that just know what they're doing!  Food is fresh, tasty,  and authentic; staff is friendly and helpful; dining room is new, clean, and fresh!

Best of all, chef Omar would be pissed off to learn that there's some place in town that is cleaner, tastier, cheaper, just as healthy, and doesn't barrage their customers with signs everywhere informing them in broken Engrish about what a great choice they made and how they should never eat anywhere else.

This place doesn't need to tell you, you just know the moment you take a bite :)

Finally an Indian place in Victoria that is authentic and tastes great. Ambience is cheerful and lively.

The lunch  buffet gives lots of choice for both vegetarians and non vegetarians. A la carte menue offers a good choice as well. I have been to Sizzling Tandoor on different occasions and the quality has been always consistent.  It's a good place if you want to try some authentic indian dishes as Tarro root Curry and Curry Pakodas.

Do try Lassi after a heary meal. You will not regret it.

Sizzling Tandoor also distinguishes itself in offering excellent customer service experience which a few other indian eateries in town lack.

    Delicious!

We made dinner reservations, showed up early and were seated right away. We were seated at the same time & next to another table -which allowed us to overhear the waitress' instructions. She informed us that the dishes were made to be shared and suggested a dish per person. We were given papadams with tamarind and mint-cilantro chutney. I don't normally like tamarind, but I loved this one (not sure if it was authentic or not).

Great that rice was included (almost perfect portion), huge selection of dishes and naan. I always test a new Indian restaurant with butter chicken and was not disappointed! I had asked for medium spice, and it was just on the higher side of that. One tablemate had the curried mussels and asked for very mild and felt hers was too spicy, another had the shish kebab asking for medium and felt there was little taste. All agreed that the food tasted great. I also had a tasty mago lassi : )

The only real negative, was that service was a little slow. There were two servers/waitresses, but it seemed that one was in training, so they seemed to travel to the tables together. The food was delivered sizzling (in the case of the kebabs) and in a timely manner.

    I wd definitely come again!

Yet another mediocre Indian restaurant in Victoria. Okay, I've only been once--but what other conclusion could be drawn about a place that manages only the barest difference between what should be two totally different dishes?

I speak of a butter chicken and a mango cod curry. Both came in nondescript sauces of approximately the same colour. Both were overpriced at around $15 each: especially galling for the cod, considering it had contained about 150 grams of fish, or about three bucks' worth.

Most amazingly, both tasted more-or-less the same! Too rich, blandly spiced, textureless besides the meat, and thoroughly unmemorable. How unmemorable? At one point, I realized I'd served more from one on top of my existing puddle from the other. I hardly noticed.

Bleah. This is the second middling Indian restaurant I've tried based on TC reviewer Pam Grant's exhortations. If I had to guess, her only other experience with curry is at Japanese restaurants. Never again, Pam! Never again!
