I used to live in the high-rise apartment building above Sitar on the corner of Rideau and Chapel. I'd always walk past it while going in and out of the building, so a friend and I decided to give it a try. We had never had Indian food before and we went to Sitar for our first times! We walked in and were seated at a table close to the entrance. The decor was fairly outdated, but we didn't mind.
Our table was directly beside a fish tank so we couldn't really see the rest of the restaurant. As a side note, these fish were massive and didn't look like they had enough room to swim around, so they basically just sat there in the water facing us. I swear to you, I felt like they were staring at us during our entire meal! Kiiiinda creepy.
I believe Sitar is a family owned restaurant. They take reservations and walk-ins, and offer catering and take-out as well. The staff was great and our server was happy to make suggestions on what to order. We had butter chicken, chicken tikka masala, and plenty of Basmati rice and naan bread for dinner, and rice pudding and gulab jamun for dessert. The butter chicken was not at all spicy and had a very mild flavour, as opposed to the chicken tikka masala, which was very spicy and was very strong and sharp-tasting. Both dishes were not largely portioned, but they were both tasty and not too greasy. The rice and naan were very hot and fresh, and we couldn't get enough. The rice pudding was milky and rich, and the gulab jamun were extremely sweet. We found all of the dishes to vary widely in flavour, but they complimented each other very well. The prices were also reasonable, so we were quite satisfied with the entire meal and the service. -

This was just a bad choice. Went with a few of my colleagues to this one based on a recommendation from a waitress in Hy's Steakhouse. We ordered some appetizers and the appetizers came with some real weird tasting chutney (the waiter explained it was a mix of mint and yogurt). The Samosas and the Onion Bhaji was so-so. We ordered a mix of non-veg and vegetarian food. Since, I only ate the vegetarian aspect of it - the Aloo Saag was pedestrian and the Tarka Dhall was just plain horrible!. My colleagues told me that other the Chicken Tikka Masala and Butter chicken were so-so, but the Lamb made the grade. The food was totally not spicy (even though we had asked for spicy). Service was slow ( I think it is a family run restaurant) but not terrible.
Definitely no plans of going on my trips to Ottawa. -

I've brought large groups of people here on numerous occasions, and everyone has enjoyed the food a lot! I've found a good selection of vegetarian options too. The only thing that's annoying is that the service has often been quite bad, bordering on comical! But with a group of friends, if you're not in a hurry it's a great choice.
