Review from Mat M.
I had dinner last night at the Sip Lounge with 4 co-workers. It was a great choice, and I think we'd all defiantly go back. The owner took our beer orders, and then after we were waiting for food came over and shot the breeze with the table. We also were waited on by two of their other staff who were all equally as nice and attentive.
The food was good- small menu, but quality. Yum. -
Review from Jando S.
Situated in a shoddy part of downtown Vancouver, Sip Lounge is a trendy nightllife venue that just so happens to be a restaurant. This was never more apparent when being asked for my ID by a bouncer standing in front of the open kitchen. Come to think of it, Sip is like a person with multiple personality disorder: it thinks its a restaurant, a lounge, a club, a people watching spot, etc. At least they all have one thing in common: they all love alcohol.
If you're in anyway confused by this, I shall explain: one of Sip Lounge's claims to fame is their tapas menu, in which everything (yes, everything) is made with alcohol. Beer battered fries. Tempura sake salted pickles. Guinness poutine. Sliders with Jack Daniels ketchup. It goes on and on and on.
Lushes looking to get hammered off the food is unlikely to do so because the cooking temperatures are usually enough to burn away most of the actual alcohol. All that is left is an interesting taste, like the quesadilla, which consists of chicken marinated in Jamaican rum and peppers and also quite tasty. The beer battered fries tasted just like seasoned fries, but they were a decent snack at the table. I enjoyed the pan seared pierogies, which despite their lack of alcoholic content, had a nice texture and a nice bite. As expected, everything felt overpriced considering the flavor scale was just somewhere in the middle.
Trendy food comes trendy people. Most of whom are worthy of eye candy in any circle, and they fill this place up night in and out. The staff is a friendly bunch for the most part and are able to seemingly take orders for food while ambiant / house music blast away in the background. Given the very chic and dark decor, this place is probably best enjoyed at night. Besides, I can't imagine eating brunch and having a big man check my ID. Or perhaps I should just take it as a compliment (#1)

Review from Allison H.
Vancouver, BC
Ugh.
I almost don't even want to write a review I am so frustrated with this place.
Quite possibly one of the WORST dining experiences I've ever had and that is saying something.
When our server wasn't sitting on the laps of the guys at the table next to us doing shots, she was busy mixing up our food and drink orders (probably because she was too buzzed to be working). I can honestly say, every single person had an issue at some point during the evening. So, let me start from the beginning:
I made reso's for a good friends birthday on a Friday night (there was going to be 15 of us), which I was told would be no problem at all. I asked three times to confirm, explicitly stating that we did not want to be split up at different tables as it was a birthday event. We arrive, and of course, our table isn't ready. To my surprise, there were actually two other large parties already seated, my blood started to boil when I was informed they didn't even have reservations yet they had walked in moments before us and were seated ahead of my group...
25 minutes later after all 15 of us stood squished at the already packed bar, the hostess informed me that our group would have to be split up or face another 40min-1hr wait because there simply wasn't anywhere to put us. It was absolutely pouring rain and the birthday girl was hungry/frustrated, so we decided to just be seated and get the night started regardless of the mistakes. Clearly this just wasn't our night.
Our ditzy server walked back and fourth by us at least half a dozen times before taking drink orders. No apologies for the seating mix up, no apologies for leaving us waiting for another 15 minutes before even GREETING the table. I will add, the other two groups were already being served appys by this point. ARG! We ordered drinks, another 15 minutes passes before they are delivered to the table. At this point, we sent someone outside to check out the waits at places close by. 30 minutes to get drinks on the table after already waiting 25 minutes to be seated? We were starving. The birthday girl was getting moody from hunger, so we ordered some food and politely requested that our dishes be expedited due to how long we'd already been waiting.
Do you think our quality of service changed? Nope! My starter salad was pathetic. Barely any goat cheese and the greens were so wilted it was almost like the salad had been dressed and was sitting in the expo window! To boot, it was so dark I couldn't properly see my food (not that I really wanted to at this point)and the music was so loud I couldn't hear the person sitting next to me, even when she was yelling. The others that ordered mains reported that their food was bland and over cooked... To which our server replied "well there are salt and pepper shakers on the table. Go nuts" with no offering of correcting the dish. Pardon? Were we ignorable because we weren't feeding you shots like the gross juice head ed-hardy wearing losers at the table beside us? All signs pointed to yes.
I swear I almost torn my dress off in Hulk like fashion when the bill came to the table and the auto-gratuity of 15% was still included on our bill. I dropped the pleasantries when I told the server she could take off the 15% and we would pay for what we consumed, or we would walk out and they would get nothing. Normally at this point I would have expected the manager to come over and at least hear me out. But, again, nope! The bills came back reprinted with no-auto grat and the sever slammed the bill folds on the table then walked away without another word. I paid, but only out of morality. Not because I wanted to and most certainly not because I thought this hell-hole deserved my hard earned cash.
I sincerely wish I could give this review no stars.
Thanks, SIP, for ruining my friends birthday.
And thanks, SIP management, for declining to speak with me on the night of because it was "too busy" and then further ignoring my email after the fact.
I will NEVER recommend this place to ANYONE for ANY REASON.Listed in: Never, EVER again!

Review from Meana k.
This place has been around for several years but only has 30 reviews? Probably doesn't quite appeal to the typical Yelper. Or it's just not that memorable. A friend mentioned he used to come here on a lot of first dates in his 20s. That made sense. The interior doesn't really look like a lounge but the atmosphere and clientele fit the part.
OH! Unisex bathroom! That was interesting. I saw the male and female symbols on the door as I entered but was still a little surprised when I walked in and found two guys standing at the sinks -- one adjusting himself, the other fixing his hair. They looked over at me and we all chuckled about the novelty of it. I've been in unisex bathrooms before, but usually at nightclubs. Then again, Edible Canada has the same concept but it's executed a little differently.
So why is my review all about the bathroom? Oh yes, it's the most memorable part of the dining experience.
Although the Guinness poutine was pretty good. The fries are beer battered first, and while I didn't taste the Guinness, the dish was a tasty appetizer. Also had the 7 cheese dip with toast which wasn't very special at all. Then I had the J Alapeno burger. Yup, it had a few jalapenos on there. Not a lot, but a few. The burger was alright. Definitely large and filling. The bun was tasty also, but I wish it had been toasted. I had the option of salad or fries so went with the salad. It had a very light vinaigrette on it that was just fine, but the salad was super simple -- just greens topped with some carrot shreds. Only 4 beers on tap, but Heineken is one of them, and about a dozen bottled options.
Service was fine and fit the environment. So, overall my review is that this place isn't bad, but it's nothing special. There's not much memorable about it, and I can tell you my food was palatable but unremarkable. My burger was most certainly not worth $16. -

Our food was okay. It took a while for our waitress to get to us as it appears she had better things to do than to take our orders.
I can't say we would be going back any time soon. -
Review from Evilyn T.
A friend was wanting to have her birthday here, so we thought we would humour her and show up. I found the inside to be kind of strange, with the kitchen in the front of the restaurant as opposed to the back where it is at most establishments, and the decor with the giant hand prints by the red leather seats was a bit weird.
We ordered up a couple drinks, I had the earl gray martini and the BF asked if they could do him up a van gogh espresso martini, and they did (it wasn't on the menu). The BF was starving so he ordered a veggie pasta, which was actually super yummy, one thing the BF does that I should get into the habit of doing more is clarifying that what I am ordering IS in fact vegetarian. I ended up ordering the sake lettuce wraps, which did not include meat, however you had the option of adding chicken. Obviously I did not order the chicken, but when my dinner arrived it was cooked with chicken. Arg! I'm not sure if this was how Sip Lounge upsells their dinner items, but even if I did eat meat I would be pretty pissed that an extra $4 was added to my dinner cost because they didn't ask me if I wanted it or not. In any case, I sent the chicken who died in vain back the kitchen.
They brought me out a new dinner that was just veggies about the time that the BF's second dinner item came. I still cannot believe he ate that whole plate of pasta and then the beer battered fries. Oink! Oink! The fries tasted pretty good, and they came with three dipping sauces, I think one was ketchup though, but it looked fancy enough. I gotta say my lettuce wraps were pretty good, but it was much spicier than I had anticipated. In the menu it said that it had a sesame sauce on it, and to me it didn't really taste too much like sesame as it did like burning fire, don't get me wrong it was good, it just wasn't what I was expecting.
I would consider trying this place again, I do think it has potential, and pretty decent food (not a ton of veggie options, but enough that I could get by). Let's just hope that next time my meal doesn't come with any extra toppings. -

SIP's 7 Year Anniversary Party was where it was at last night - busiest Monday night I`ve seen downtown! Festively nutcracker-themed with Christmas lights, endless Stoli, roaming appies and one killer house DJ, the resto-lounge was absolutely packed! Amazing party with loads of great people.
In the mix with industry people, Vancouver socialites and regulars was James Yurichuk (47, Defense) of the BC Lions who graced us with his presence and the Official GREY CUP! Some random partying naked man also entertained the night for a bit, lol.
Always love my experiences at SIP. Awesome crowd of good-lookin`people, hot music and cool owners. Continues to be a top favourite of mine. A big congratz on the 7 year achievement along the Strip!Listed in: Restaurants: Good for Groups, Girls Night in Vancouver, Best Late Night Spots

The drinks were reasonably priced, the food looked good, but the crowd and the atmosphere were absolutely painful. Full to the brim with greasy wannabe millionaires. Months later, even walking past this place brings up a reflex in me to say, "This place blows. Let's get out of here." to whomever I'm with.

This place is truly a must go for dinner, lounge, drinks, hanging out, people watching... well just about anything!
The staff are very friendly and professional. The place is gorgeous and upscale. Ray the owner is a great guy who is running a truly upscale top notch lounge. It's the place to be on Granville Street.
Their drink selection is amazing. So much to choose from and very interesting combinations. I can't say I have a favorite because with every next drink I want to try something new. Bellinitini and Bi Polar are the best, but again, I'll try them all!
All the food is cooked with alcohol which is a nice touch. The beer battered fries are so tasty and I love dips and this one comes with a few different choices and they are all so yummy. The sliders are great, Coconut prawns, oh the crab cakes are so good too!
I went here for my stagette and us ladies had an amazing time! Great atmosphere for fun times. The DJ is a nice touch too!
Sip has won many awards and they truly deserve them all and more! -

Went here last night for the beer-battered fries & a couple beers with some friends.
As usual, the beer-battered fries were amazing, and their beer is pretty reasonably priced. The service is just ok though, but seeing as it's a bar, I wasn't it expecting it to be outstanding.
The music & vibe varies here night to night. Some nights, the music is great, and other times you just want to run out of there. Definitely worth coming here to try the beer-battered fries though. Just make sure you get extra sauce (the orange-y one). -

I always feel a bit old for the Granville strip, but thank my lucky starts I came here this week! To be honest, my gf and I meant to go to the Refinery, but it was closed for the evening. Nooo! For convenience sake, we chanced it downstairs at Sip. Wowee, am I ever glad we did.
By fate, the tapas on Mondays just happened to be 2 for 1 until 10 pm so we went to town on the menu. We ordered the tuna sliders (OMG YES!!), Guiness poutine, sushi roll (average) and coconut prawns (DO IT). The prawns came in a dish of green curry with rice. The fancy presentation came unexpectedly for such a reasonable offer.
Martini's were on special for $5.75 and I sipped on a Bellinitini. It wasn't the blended frozen kind that I love, but it was good.
Loved the chic environment, low lights and stellar service. But boy, that food... so beautifully presented and totally tasty!
So class, the highlights for your next test:
-Come on a Monday night. Slow, quiet. Barstar free.
-Hook up with some 2 for 1 Appies before 10pm and/or $5.75 Martinis.

The few times I have been there, the service has been decent, the things that helped redeem then from any short comings, was the food and the drinks.
I wish the place was a bit bigger, when the restaurant is full, its REALLY full, its hard for some of the people to get around without standing right next to people who are dining against the wall.
The food is a decent-high price, but its pretty good.
The calamari is a great snacker!
Desserts were to die for during dine out!
Definitely recommend this place to others. -

Thought we were going to The Refinery, which I gather is upstairs, next door, but we were directed ground level to Sip, which had a telly for the hockey. (Congrats by the way, for having the game on, but the volume at a reasonable level!)
Our server was very attentive and efficient. The appies menu looked interesting and we dabbled in perogies, beer-battered fries and calamari. All good. So good, we had a repeat order of the perogies and fries! Only complaint? Eight bleedin' dollars for a pint of beer. Thought I could see into the future! But, I'd deffo go back for the appies. -

I had a Groupon for this place, had been there a few years back, so tried it again.
Nice decor, modern, funky, warm and just overall comfortable.
We had a couple different tapas a few drinks. The tapas were GREAT! Around $8-12 each dish which is pretty good in downtown Vancouver, I think. Very tasty. Good cocktails too.
I enjoyed it, except the only thing is our server, though she was very efficient, kind of gave off a cold biatch attitude which is unfortunate. She didn't smile once, and just looked irritated. Maybe it's because we were in and out in half an hour and didn't have that much? BTW I tip accordingly...she got just over 10% which I felt was generous considering the chilly reception. Oh well. You should treat your customers like gold regardless, to ensure they come back. -

We got there for the game I would recommend this place to anyone who likes to pay $8.50 for a beer or $11 for perogies. I guess if you need to go to the Granville strip, and everywhere else is Full, I would recommend it, but with so many other choices.. i would choose somewhere else.
I was going to give them 2 stars but I was just reminded of ONE good thing, the ambient music was a tolerable level... so 3 stars for you! -
Review from Erin U.
Went last night and loved it! Not what i expected from the outside. We were seated in the back in a cozy 2 person table with candle light. At first glance the menu seemed pretty standard but after looking further I was surprised at some of the fancier options. I ordered a goat cheese chicken and salad and it was marinated in white wine! My lady friend had the marinated chicken with asparagus, potatoes and amazing sauce, and cheese shavings. Everything was deliscious! Our server was amazing! So awesome and chatty and on the ball. We even got her name so I could put it in my review but now I forget haha a few too many mai tais and baileys. Its higher ended pricing but your paying for top quality. A DJ named Eric was playing and he was also very nice and the music was awesome! good chill dinner stuff. I would def recomend going on thursdays when he is spinning. Overall a great night and I will def be going back!!!!

I was told by everyone that the Beer-battered Fries were the way to go. No one was lying. In fact, our table ordered three plates worth.
I'm not too sure what was in the light green dip that accompanied the piles of delicious potato sticks, but it was definitely my favourite choice dip of the night. We tried many other dishes, but nothing was nearly as memorable as though fries.
As the night progresses at Sip, the establishment becomes less of a restaurant and more of a drinking lounge filled with barstars. In fact, they dim the lights on your meal, if you're special enough. (Not impressed.) Anywa, It's exactly what you'd expect for an eatery which sells itself by putting booze in every food item they serve and which is located on Vancouver's main clubbing drag.
In all honesty, this place could survive just selling those fries and serving up drinks. MIchael Carter, Executive Chef.. Think about it. It could work!Listed in: Things To See. People To Do.

Review from Jessica P.
Very hip, very yelpy. It's a wine lounge, with a full bar.
Warning: don't go in there if your'e already tired, it's pretty much a dimly lit cave in there.
Good wine list, fun cocktails and very nice and sophisticated inside. We went there when it just opened, so there were only about 6-8 other people in the establishment. Some were just lounging at the bar, others were eating a dinner of small plates, and the boy and I sat down to a booth to--you guessed it--sip some wine.
It's a nice little retreat from the hustle and bustle of Granville. I'd visit again. Friendly hostess, apparently they have a live DJ at night and it's a pretty decent size. It was a very dimly lit chill vibe in there pre-prime time, so if that's how you're looking to start your night, go for it.
I'd go bottoms up at Sip again.Listed in: If Vancouver can, so can vu!

If there's one word I hate more than anything it's tapas. Vancouver bars and pubs have gotten so food lazy they label anything tapas and throw it out. From microwavable mini-burgers to actual fillet Mignon, you don't know what you're getting with the word tapas.
That said, the tapas at sip is pretty damn amazing. They actually put care into the food, which is strange because the name would imply caring a bit more about the drinks.
But whoa, do they care about the drinks. I've mentioned Whineo's before as a place I like, but their drink selection and interest seems pretty piss poor compared to sip. Sip is like a poor man's Salt, in so far that it's interested in good food and good drinks together and pairing them into a complete meal.
Definitely head here if you've got food AND drinks in mind for the full experience. Not that one or the other isn't great, but you'll be missing out on how well Sip works at both ends, a rare feat for a Granville hot spot. -
Review from Daniel F.
The food was hit or miss. At $29, a beef tenderloin cut had better be damn good. It was just okay, though. My sister's albacore tuna dish, though, was absolutely delicious. Everything complemented one another. The crab cake appetizers were also delicious. Four pieces the size of my thumb at $13, though, was kind of a rip. The drinks were fine for $6.25, but had I bought them regularly priced at $10.25, I would have been annoyed. What saved this place from two stars were the free desserts. The cheesecake brulee was phenomenal. I have never had anything like it. The brulee made the cheesecake crispy on the outside and gooey on the inside, as if it had been deep fried. The chocolate/brownie thing was also very good for what it was.
The other thing I notice was the crowd. I wasn't sure if I had to sign a release for the 2nd season of the Jersey Shore before leaving or if I had just stumbled upon the largest and most inconspicuous tranny bar in Vancouver. There were so many fake tits and roid-infused machos. (Yes, that's also what a tranny bar looks like). Maybe that's just Granville Street? -

Vancouver, BC
Atmosphere: It is small and tiny, not enough leg room on the seats, at least where we were seated. I liked the idea of a semi open kitchen. It made it very sociable and open. It is a great place to take a lousy date since you can get distracted by the kitchen staff. It is a dressed to be scene kind of place and I felt old going in there even though we were going for soup and a burger.
Service: I must be missing something 'cause clearly a lot of people gave this place good reviews. I think my date and I came here at the wrong time, however, we had a bad experience. Judging from the other reviews, this is not the norm. The hostess came off as a bitch. The place opens at 5 pm which was fine. We walked in at 4:40 pm (we didn't know what time it was) and the waitress was rude to us. I joked with her and laughed but she seemed to want non of it. The door was unlocked, therefore, we assumed that it was open and since we were early, she could've politely mention the start time. We wanted to make a reservation for 5 pm and she pretty much rolled her eyes at us. In fact throughout the evening she made us feel like we were an inconvenience more than anything. My date and I just wanted water with our meals so that we could taste the food and she gave us attitude 'cause we weren't ordering drinks, just meals. When she tried to act nice to ask later, it came off very insincere and fake. She also rushed as out the door when it came to settling the tab even though there was no one around. When she found out that we had a Groupon, the attitude got worse. My date pointed something out that turned me off as well. The employers were eating as well, it was early and they have a right to, however, the employees were getting more servings of food than the patrons. Don't get me wrong, there was a lot on our plates and we were full, however, when the portions were noticeably disproportionate it was just rude. We tipped 25 cents the service was that bad. I really wanted to stay for dessert, however, we were so put off by the service that we went to the Crepe place down the street for some dessert instead.
Price: We had a Groupon for $30 worth for $15 and we stayed within the limit. Overall the prices were decent for a tapas bar.
Food: I ordered the Comfort Soup $8 with Roasted red pepper, Red Wine, tomato and orange zest. For me it was a trio of tastes one after the other. You taste the tomato soup first, then the spices and you have an awesome red wine after taste with a hint of zest. It was awesome. Every bite was like a circus. The second item I ordered was the Guinness poutine. I haven't had poutine before, however, I am sure that the cheese curds are supposed to be melted. They were chunky and cold when served. I didn't have a problem with it per se considering that I have eaten cheese curds straight as a snack. I didn't taste any of the Guinness batter. I bake and cook with Guinness on many occasions and I know when I am being served just over seasoned fries and G-battered fries. I was somewhat unimpressed with the fries. -

Kinda small, no dance floor, trendy, good looking staff.
We got here at 7PM.. this was waaay too early. The place didn't pick up until 10PM.
TONS of girls having girls night out making the place uncomfortably unbalanced. I guess the guys were at brewery/sports bars..
The drinks were mediocre in quality, go here for atmosphere and to meet girls.
The music was AWESOME!
1 star - ambiance
1 star - music
1 star - location
I'd give this place 3.5 stars, not feeling like it's a 4 so rounding down :( -

Good food in an unusual restaurant/lounge layout and killer cheese dip.
Spent a good portion of last Saturday night sitting here at the bar and I've been here many times before. Seated at the bar my buddies were focused on the hockey game but I was far more interested in watching the food preparation (such a food-geek). I got to see how they prepared the food and what was the most popular.
The chef seemed to crank out plate after plate of perogies, seared ahi tuna, cheese dip and ribs. You may want to consider those dishes should you go here.
Cool house/electronic music as well which always sits well with me however the patrons were more of the yaletownish barstar sort which I could do without.
The cheese dip is the main reason to go as far as I'm concerned: extraordinarily tasty with the subtle hints of the different cheeses used in the dish. Very high calorie but very good. Gets an extra star just for the dip. -

bartender: huh?
j: mind erasers. vodka, kahlua..
bartender: oh, you mean mind f*ck.
we wandered into this place like a pair of lost tourists. it wasn't super crowded and the drinks were really cheap. $6.25 each, i think. the bartender was efficient but not very friendly. we sat at the counter and watched food being prepared. overall, i liked the ambiance. i'll definitely be back. -

This was a nice place to have a drink at. Friendly services and just place nice.
So I ordered the stuff chicken with goat cheese and wrapped with Prosciutto. The combination was interesting, but the out come was disappointing. The chicken was dry, the sauce that was used didn't match with the main item. Can't figure out what was in the sauce but it's just didn't blend right with the chicken and stuff, the mashed potatoes was good tho. -

I'm going to let you in on a coveted secret. I like alcohol.
It smells great, tastes fine and makes me a whirlwind on the dance floor. Factor in Furlong and you'd swear we choreographed the whole thing.
Now, I say this because I naturally love to drink this fine substance. Surprisingly, eating it, yes I am also partial to that.
Recently I missed my own going away party. Although I selected a cake described as a vanilla sponge saturated in liquor, I was without the privilege of trying it.
To compensate, I opted for Sip. Oh Sip. I love tapas, sharing a multitude of dishes is my preferred method of eating.
Everything is made with alcohol. It sounds amazing, Sampling rewarded expectations. Some booze through drinking is fun. Logic dictates having more booze through drinking and eating it can only be better. -

hip, dark, cave-like little wine bar. I enjoyed my Syrah as we ducked in out of the busy Granville/Robson crowds in the area. I have to get used to the younger drinking age here - I'm not used to seeing so many 18 year olds out in wine bars. Kinda makes you feel old . . . you'll get that feeling once or twice if you come from the States and go out anywhere near Robson St. But, gotta say, people (especially younger people) are much more friendly and polite than in the States, where we sometimes hide behind pointless attitude.

Very nice atmosphere. The girl bartenders are friendly, smiley and dressed nice. They also know how to make drinks, which is good. Nothing really blew me away on the cocktail menu, but the bourbon sour I ordered tasted yummy. $13 for a 2 oz. cocktail is a bit steep. Not the best value, especially since the cocktail--though good--was nothing special. It's a nice atmosphere though, and if money isn't an option and you're not looking for cocktails that are amazing or anything, then this would be a good spot. I like it here and I'd go back.

With the specials on martinis and appetizers Sip was great for a night out with friends. The seared tuna was perfectly seasoned and fresh, the salads were great, and the cinnamon bun was warm and quite big- perfect for sharing ;)

This place is nice to come once in a while if you want to get together with friends and dress up. The bartenders are friendly and dressed niced. The appy's are pretty good, esp the ahi seared tuna, which was about $12. The drinks are a bit pricey but yummy tasting. Something sweet I enjoyed was the fuzzy peach :) This place has a nice cozy lounge atmosphere.

Yeah I get down here sometimes with my friends before we club crawl in Midtown. The name is a bit dumb, but whatev. The drinks are rad, and I can kill a couple hundred bucks here easy so it's def. on low frequency for now. I'll of course go anytime if you're buying. Just message me.

I have to say that this place was SMALL. Not as nice as the pictures on the website. It reminded me of a really small club. Loud music.. crowded space.. people bumping into you... I was hoping for a more relaxing atmosphere. I was there with 3 of my girlfriends and none of us really had a good time. we couldn't hear each other, the men there were rowdy and obnoxious... the drinks weren't that great and overpriced... the only thing we really liked was the fact that the bouncer (they make you line up to get in.. like at clubs) was super nice and he was flirting with us the whole time. And the manager? or the owner? kept on giving us free drinks all night. But are free drinks enough to make us go back? Probably not... we've been to better places.
