This place has a great selection of imported beer which is why I love coming here. I really like that they serve their beer in its official beer glass--pretty cool!! The atmosphere is nice and cozy. It's good for groups or dates. It can get very loud though as the night carries on. There is no official drink menu (just a beer and wine list). But they will make you anything you want. If you would prefer to have a cocktail or martini list, go to VIP which is next door.

I haven't ordered any of the food here, but I wouldn't recommend it. It's a small list. Eat before you come here.

The extensive beer menu at Sin & Redemption caught my attention first.  Many, many beers to choose from with pints priced between $5-$7.

They also have a huge selection of liquor but no actual drink menu per se.  Our waiter said that they could make anything but I was in a suggestive mood and would have gone the martini route if presented with a drink menu.  I caved under the pressure and went with a pint of Erdinger ($6.60).

Food menu was not quite as extensive.  I ordered the grilled calamari appetizer ($8.95) and split the chicken/rib combo ($19.95).  Others in our group ordered the burger ($9.50), the stew ($10.95) and the baked goat cheese ($12.95).

My grilled calamari was not great...reeked heavily of fish-y smell when it arrived.  There were only about 6-8 pieces on the plate which were all rubbery and chewy.  Chicken/rib combo was decent but not outstanding.

Service was friendly and efficent.  The bar is dimly lit so I guess if you and to sin in public, this would be a good place to do it.  I would pass on having a meal here but not bad for drinks.

I have a soft spot for this place. It's in my old hood and it became the informal headquarters for what is now my bonafide production company. My business partner and I spent many hours here writing and planning and well...drinking. What creative idea wasn't basted with a bit of Irish whiskey?

Anyway...its the sister to the Village Idiot on the corner which is a place I'm not a big fan of so was happy when they expanded into S&R. The food is above average pub food and there's something about the smell of the french fries that come out in that pretty cone with the paper around them that gets me every time! Perfectly cooked and salted - appeals to the salt freak in me. To be honest, I don't go there to eat generally. I know they are light on veggie options but again...they serve drinks!

If you're into beer - its here. A long list of various types - I won't even pretend to list the types as I'm not a beer drinker - but everyone I've been there with has been pleased with the options. The wine list is lacklustre in comparison but I'm a bit of a wine snob so I guess I'll take it easy on them. It's not a wine bar, its a pretty pub so go for the ambiance over the wine. Did I mention they serve Irish whiskey?

The decor is sooooo cozy. Leather back round lounge chairs and padded booths in the middle and south section and a more formal dining area in the north section gives you lots of room to accommodate what is generally a busy place. The crowd can sometimes feel college-y but more often than not it's a great place to spend a few hours with friends. And in the summer they open up their big bay windows and let the breeze in.

Walking along McCaul towards Baldwin to meet up my Yelp eating friends... Thinking of having a coffee at TAN. Then when I saw the open windows semi patio setup of Sin & Redemption.... I changed my mind since a beer is always better than a coffee after a long working day?!

Tables are set up really close together, but does look quite comfy and intimate. After I squeezed into one of the tables closed to the open windows, I was excited to check out their great selections of import beers.

Sadly both Fruehli and Sir Perry both not available.... as I was looking for something light and refreshing to celebrate the few last glorious day of the warm weather..... The waiter recommended Somersby Apple Cider ($6.60) the only cider they have on the menu.

Since I was here in the early evening for a pre dinner drink on a Saturday. the place was not too busy and the crowd was a lot more mellow.

I definitely will be back again to try out other beers on the menu, the prices are really reasonable and the services are fast and friendly!

    Cheers!!!

This place gets downgraded one star.

I came here for brunch yesterday with Theresa W. and another friend. I definitely definitely ordered the salmon eggs benny, then stated that I'm allergic to dairy, though I still eat butter (which normally makes hollandaise safe).

When the server brought our food she gave me the salmon with spinach salad, covered in grated cheese. I told her it was the wrong thing, and she offered to bring me the eggs benny, but later told me that the hollandaise has milk in it (what?!). We agreed that I would take the original dish she gave me, but with a new cheeseless salad.

The salad was fine, but the salmon was overcooked and incredibly dry, and not because it was reheated (it was cold by this time).

This place is really really great for beers and relaxing, but I don't think I'll order food here again.

Sin & Redemption is another one of my go-to places (also included in that list is it's next door neighbour, Village Idiot). If you've been to Village Idiot, Sin & Redemption is it's classy older sibling.

The best thing about this place is of course, the colossal beer list! They have so many great beers, tons of which are from Belgium (which goes with the whole Belgian feel of the place). Another perk is menu, which has a flatbread section (all delicious), as well as burgers, belgian frites, and delicious entrees such as beef stew.

My only complaint about this place is the suspicious food timing. I'm not a fan of a restaurant who can turn over my order in less than 10 minutes - if you're not a fast food place, I know you're operating your kitchen like one! On my most recent visit, my burger and friends stew were out in about 8 minutes. My burger was kind of cold (cheese half-melted) which confirmed my suspicion that this burger wasn't made fresh for me. That being said, the frites were hot and delicious as always, and my friend's stew was also quite tasty!

The service here is always good too - the staff are always quite funny and personable.

If you're looking for a "classy" pub with reasonable prices, definitely keep it in mind!

Came here for a friends birthday with a group of 18.

Our waiter was an older gentleman who was not friendly at all and acted like we were annoying him with our requests.  Someone ordered a bud light lime and he berated her for her choice.  At one point, a friend asked if we could all have separate bills to which he replied, "it would be a lot easier to give you separate bills if you didn't all keep moving!"  which is such bullshit because maybe 3 people had switched seats. And who cares if we were moving around?  Isn't part of a good waiter's job being able to put faces to an order?  Anyways, apparently we were too much to handle because another waitress came and served us for the remainder of the night.

At several points during the evening, a couple friends and I kept getting whiffs of what we presumed was dog shit.  It was really disgusting and we couldn't put our fingers on what it was or where it was coming from.  Turns out it was the grilled calamari which one of my friends ordered. lol.  Needless to say, that particular dish wasn't a favourite amongst our crowd.

Everything else was fine, I guess.  Although there's no AC and it was flippin' hot!  Decent food (I had the  1/2 rack dinner), great beer selection, and I loved where we were seated.  Great for people watching.

I could've sworn Elaine K would beat me to a review on this (because she's all Yelp crazy), but I guess I'll write it first. I met up with her and a friend for some afternoon boozing, and despite the fact she was having a chili cook-off at home, she came hungry.

First off, the place is nice. It's a clean pub and has a very relaxed vibe to it. The beer list is great (they had Elaine's choice beer for the summer, and my delicious Fruli, which is surprisingly hard to find in pubs in the YVR) so they were off to a good start. But it rolled itself downhill from there. Her food order came out completely messed up (a salad instead of an eggs benny?) and was topped with cheese despite her stressing a dairy allergy. And I didn't eat it, but she confirmed my suspicions - that piece of salmon was one step away from being jerky.

You can't really go wrong with beer, so my experience was okay; but with a city with so many options for pubs I doubt I'll come back to this one if people are looking for something to eat.

Sin and Redemption is the perfect name for this spot.  Sinful is the food. It's virtually all overcooked, bland, or uninspired.  The cocktails, despite having deliciously decadent names like "Last Supper Martini" and "Judas Kiss", are mediocre at best.  But, there is some redemption, and it's not from St. Patrick's Church across the street.  The atmosphere is quite cozy and it's usually pretty lively.  The Belgian Frites are a saving grace. And, if you're going for beer, there is a nice, extensive list, including several Belgian, Dutch and German labels worth the visit.

Nice place. Classy decor. Love the big open window front. GREAT beer selection and prices. Decent service and accommodating to a group of over 12.

I didn't eat there but a few people I was with did and the presentation of food looked lovely. Nobody was overly impressed with the food but they were all satisfied.

I love how impressed everyone is with their wide selection. Don't get me wrong, I enjoy trying different beers as much as the next guy, but it's not like there's any dearth of pubs in town with interesting micro brews. The idea that I've so fully worked my way up and down every tap in town that I need this joint as a real treat seems weird. To me it's more like Baskin Robbins of beer. Sure, it's delicious and sure there are tons of flavors, but it's expensive and kind of soul-less.

The food is fine, totally standard fare, and not too expensive, so no complaints there. The one thing I will say is that when I sat down with a group of friends, the waiter launched in to an extended joke about how "gays probably won't like this meal too much." A joke that fell flat with the two gay couples I was sitting with. When we brought it up, instead of apologizing he stuck by his guns, that what he was saying wasn't offensive because it was true - apparently gay men hate beer. When we wanted to talk to the manager, everyone in the place deferred and said he was either in the next room, downstairs or not in that day.

Obviously it was a pretty crummy experience, but you can't slight the whole bar for a kind of douch-y server. Mostly I just feel that the place isn't that special and if it has more character than Jack Astor's as @Kent P suggests, then it's no more than a thimbleful more.

    Great selection of beers.

This is not your regular neighbourhood pub, where the premium brand ends at heineken.

This place has rare european beers.
ie. Delirium, Leffe, Hop-it, La Trappe, Grimbergen, London porter, stella, hoegaarden,... the list goes on.

If you know your beer, this is your place.

    Food is just okay.

A group of friends decided to meet here tonight for a drink. I have always known about this place because I often go to Margarita's and Konnichiwa up the street. Anyway, when I found out that we were meeting here, I was stoked because I really wanted to check out this establishment.

The pricing at S & R is very reasonable; I'm a huge fan of Fruehli (no umlaut capacity on my computer... I think, anyway) and it cost me $5.60. I have been to quite a few establishments that serve this strawberry flavored beer and I think this is the lowest price that I have seen.

As mentioned by previous posters, there is a variety of beers to choose from. My server said today that I could choose from 34 different beers. I was impressed! S & R also serves food, which is a plus if you have not eaten before coming here. My friend ordered the poutine... with a twist! Instead of your regular gravy, this poutine had curry. It was delicious and I definitely want to recreate it at home.

The service was excellent. Our server was always available to take our order. He had an impeccable memory given the fact that he was serving 12 people.

All in all, I will be back and highly recommend that you check this place out.

If you have a large group of people and you need a place to gather for lunch on a Saturday, GO HERE.  It was seriously scary empty when I got there at ~12:30 for lunch.  Which meant I got the full attention of (I guess it would be) the owner, so we got to chat about beers.

You go here for the beers, or alcohol selection (the bar is stacked with selection).  Being the only one there, I got to try one that was just brought in and not on the menu yet- a Grimbergen Optimo Bruno- tasty.

The food is meh.  It's okay, but nothing makes it stand out other than any other pub.

I guess the must be popular in the evenings, but  I do feel bad how dead it was there on a weekend afternoon.

We came across this pub a couple days ago when we were doing a Halloween walk.

We stopped in this afternoon after seeing a play.

We sat at the bar and Steve took good care of us.  The drafts available are different from the usual fare.

I found that there was a conflict.  Sitting at the bar, it felt like a pub.  Looking back at the foofoo tables with candles, it seemed like a fancier restaurant, as did the menu.

I may stop in if I was in the 'hood.

Beer lovers rejoice- there's plenty for you to choose from at Sin & Redemption!

As for me...I'm not so much a beer lover (and even less so when 7 months pregnant).  I asked them for a lemonade and they responded they didn't have it. So instead I asked for a shirley temple. They had that, but the shirley temple they brought to me tasted an awfully lot like a lemonade. Interesting.

As for my meal I ordered the cheesy flat bread. It was tasty, but really just bread topped with cheese. I'm pretty sure I could make this at home and my skills in the kitchen are quite limited.

It was pretty crowded on a Wed night so if you're a beer lover you may want to join the fun.

I dropped by for a drink as I was passing by so this review doesn't apply for food. The draft beer selection is impressive and with a lot of Belgian brands being represented. I am a Delirium Tremens fan and usually order it whenever I see it on draft. The staff was nice and friendly and I was here on a weekday around lunch time. The windows there open out all the way so a nice way to get a patio feel in summer. The place was nearly empty but I can see it getting busy in the evenings. I will come back for food as the menu looked tempting.

Pretty surprised about the negative comments about the service and the folks who go here 'cause these are two of my favourite things about Sin & Redemption!

Every time I've gone, it's been with a big group of people on a busy night and the staff works to make room for us while not disturbing the rest of the bar. They are SO friendly and attentive and put up with my shenanigans. Heh.

As already mentioned, the beer selection is pretty incredible. And you can get any beer in a two pint-sized challis. I won't hold the staff against me for poking fun at my favourite concoction -- Fruli in the massive challis! ; )

Like the atmosphere as well. Most people are open to chatting up with and humouring me. AND I met the Foursquare Mayor while I was there! Haha.

I've made a few trips here this summer as I work on McCaul and Orde street with my work group as well as with friends, and I must say it has been quite enjoyable.

Most of my trips here have been during the day for a drink and once for lunch. So I must point out I can't say too much about their overall food here. I had the Nun's Pasta and wasn't blown away but it was not a big regret in my life. The majority of my group did seem to have enjoyed their food here very much.

They have a good beer list and if you're in the mood to try out a few good pints I highly suggest coming over here. Matching beer mugs are always fun too. A plus over their neighbour the Village Idiot Pub (another establishment I enjoy) is that their beer list has description with the varying alcohol content of each drink. I tried out a 10% beer and if you like dark beers and getting drunk, I highly recommend it. If not, they have at least one other beer at 9% or more if you don't want to go all the way out to 10%!

Their servers are friendly enough, as it's always busy when I'm there. No complaints in terms of service.

One minor negative I have is that I am not a huge fan of the crowds here (and at the Village Idiot Pub), there's nothing wrong with them really, just not the type of crowd I would like to share a venue often. Not all undergrads,  but late 20s/early30s seems more of a majority.

Note: refrain from attending on a garbage night as the street does stink up real well on those nights!

Sin and Redemption is the upscale sister of the Village Idiot Pub.  Located right next door, S and R offers a just as impressive beer selection with a focus on imports.  Food attempts to be upscale but sadly disappoints.  Lots of seating and a very friendly staff.

Obligatory Title Pun: What a SIN the food isn't better.  Beer selection it's only REDEMPTION.

Menu Readability: Good.  Separate menu for drinks, with cute names for martinis.  Because we need more cute names for martinis.

Need to mention: Consider yourself lucky if served by the likes of Ryan Thomas.

What this place teaches me about myself: why do I go to a place with such amazing beer selection if I only drink Stella?  Just in case.

Beer selection is great for such a small pub.  Prices are about mid range.

Not sure who the manager/owner is (neither seem to be around at any time) but they need to work on creating a more intimate atmosphere.  Almost every time I've been in I've requested that the lights to be lowered, (come night time) and the music turned up (it is almost always inaudible)  Those two annoyances aside, Sin and Redemption is a good place to taste some imports that you don't often find.

Some of the decor screams of a cheap student bar (ie. electric 'candles' that fake the real thing), but you almost wouldn't notice if their lighting was better.  The beer selection definitely makes it all worth it and service has been prompt both times I've been there.

Sin & Redemption has always been good for it's lengthy list of beers and decent pub fare. There always seems to be enough seating regardless of how monstrous a size your group grows throughout the night.

On my most recent dinner time visit, we indulged in flights of Koningshoeven (just $7.75!) to start. In their miniature sizes, the dubbel (6.5%), tripel (8%), and quad (10%) made for a great introduction of the Trappist beer to my curious friend. It's also always fun to trade tasting notes when drinking in tandem. The rest of the evening's full sized pints were also all refreshingly reasonably priced.

This is the first time I'd ever really noticed the music. It seemed to be playing from an iPod belonging to someone with very eclectic taste. I appreciated the vintage Bowie and other rock classics, but could barely wait out the teeny bopper interludes.

Our chicken quesadilla and spinach artichoke cheese dip were only decent, but we hadn't naively decided to turn off Baldwin in any hopes to find better food. We were there for the beer and that is what we got!

5 stars for drinks, 3 for food. I decided to average them out.

Fantastic draught beer selection here, and they don't charge silly prices for the privilege of having good imported beer in proper glassware. Don't think any of their draughts are over 7.00, including the Trappist beers and Delirium Tremens. (That's the one with the pink elephant on the glass - and though an acquired taste it's far from disgusting. IN fact one of the best tasting high-ABV beers that exist.) Great environment as well - I love the open garage doors on nice days. And the service is fine, though it can be slow if you wander in without catching the eye of a server.

The food is subpar though. Apart from the belgian style frites, anyway, which they serve in a cute cone with mayonnaise and ketchup. Those are great. But I had a burger that was just a bizarre consistency - very juicy, but for all I know it could have been a wad of soya filler. It was like a Harvey's hamburger, but tasting even less of beef. (Yes, I know now that IS possible!) I should say though that everyone else I was with was happy with their food, at least happy enough not to complain to the rest of us. So nothing was offensively bad, even if nothing looked too great. But they really need to get a different supplier of hamburger patties. Or - God forbid - they could even make some themselves out of, you know, hamburger.

This is where I go when I feel a bit classier than heading to The Village Idiot.  They share the same kitchen, but the food options are a bit more upscale here, and I've usually had a good experience, other than the flatbread, which is kind of underwhelming.  The quesadillas, fries, and roast chicken I've had on other occasions were great, though.  Can't argue with their extensive beer menu, and for nights when I'm sticking to liquor, there's a lot of martini choices to pick from. It's never too empty or too full, so I'm always able to get a table (and be able to hear the conversation of who I'm with - it's never too noisy in here), which makes going here a no brainer.

EDIT - Ok, I've upped the rating as I went again last night, and realized that the beer prices here are pretty much the best in the city for the wide selection offered. Staff was alright, no music at all which was odd. The fruit fly chemical strips hanging from the bar are disgusting, and should only be put up at night!

Beer selection is pretty decent, what with three types of Koningshoeven (the ONLY Dutch Trappist Ale) on tap, but the food, as noted by pretty much everyone else, blows. Just because you call it a frite does not give it any more cachet than a simple french fry, which it is.  Everything on the menu looked overpriced, so I stuck to the burger. Service is pretty decent, but I was there Sunday at 3 PM, not exactly a prime time,  and yes, I did notice that the music sucked.

I have to rate this place fairly low not because of the restaurant itself, but because of the crowd. Maybe this place might be more impressive in the summer when the front windows can be open, because during fall to winter transition I had a hard time enjoying myself.

First off I have to say that the number and selection of taps at this place is some of the best I've experienced in the city. They have a wide variety of beers to choose from (check their menu) coming from over the world. I had a change to try 3 or 4 beers I've never had before. Even better, they offered 2 sets of flights of taster beer. They include 3 different beers to sample. The food at this place was probably above average I think. I had the fish n' chips and my wife had a burger. The food is good for what it is. The guy who served us was also prompt and pleasant.

Why didn't I enjoy this place then? Everyone in this place decided that they had to yell at each other to talk even when there was no music playing. The noise level in this place was unreal. The place seems like its filled mostly with UofT peeps hanging out. Unfortunately my university time has passed.

I would love to go back to this place but I can't get over the fact I have to yell across the table to have a conversation; especially since this place is a sit down establishment with few to no standing areas

Sin and Redemption is a good spot to go if you in the Dundas square area and want something that has a little more character than Jack Astor's (or someplace equally embarrassing) but still close. It's right up from the AGO and The Village Idiot on the corner of McCaul/Dundas, and a little more upscale. Nice spot at night when the garage door windows are up and you can look across the street at the big, old, creepy church.

My suggestion is to hit this place either before or after dinner in Baldwin Village one block north.

Solid 3.  Great beer selection and prices (you can see these on their website).  Based on Yelp consensus did not try the food.  Service was good, but the place was mostly empty when we went - 5:15 on a Monday.

I didn't care for the seats though, while comfortable enough it feel like the same material that the have in the back seats of cabs... the kind that sort of feels like hard leather or something that's probably easy to clean vomit off of... that's what it makes me think of, anyway.

    The beer is good.

    The food is not.

    The service is good.

    The crowd is eclectic.

I recommend drinking here, chatting, over hearing other conversations, and then move onto some place better to eat.

Let's be honest, I was invited for drinks, I went for fries.

I love these fresh cut fries in their fun spiral holder thing. The dips are severly lacking but the fries are tasty!

Though the beer selection is interesting can I just say how unimpressed I was when on one ocassion (I have only been twice), I was told the only beer I actually like to drink, Stella, was out of stock!! Instead I tried a disgusting beer with a fun pink elephant on the glass. Apparently it has a high alcohol content and a disgusting taste to show for it.

The place was noisey, very busy with loud people drinking heavily.

I like that the entire front wall opens up.

    Go for the fries.

My friends and I were in town visiting and asked our concierge for a recommendation for an inexpensive place to get dinner and drinks; Sin & Redemption was where he sent us. The ambience and decor were perfect for a lowkey, but classy night out and the service was great. We were seated right away and had our drinks to sip for about 15 minutes before our food arrived.

I tried one of their famous martinis, the "Nutty Monk" which was small, but strong and flavorful. For my meal I had the baked chicken quesadilla which was extremely filling and not at all greasy, hence being baked. The food was super affordable and the drinks were moderately priced. Our waiter recommended us a great desert beer as well, and we left quite pleased. We got there early and it definitely seemed to be getting busier as we finished our meal, but it was also a Saturday night.

This is my favorite place to hangout with friends. They have a great beer selection (Start with Warsteiner Dunkel, move on to Stiegl Lager
Delirium tremens and wrap it up with Bass). The food menu is decent too. My favorite are Chicken dinner and sinner burger. The ambiance is really nice and classy. Also, the service was great.

I don't know why I'm not a bigger fan of this place.  I guess because it's always decent, but never great.  Oh yeah, and the service is USUALLY slow  (today was an exception at least on the latter front.  In and out in 45 minutes).  If I was a real stickler, I'd deduct another star for the ridiculuous number of speeling mistokes on the memu.

The beer selection here is enough to keep everyone happy; I had the Fullers London Porter, my friend balanced out the universe by having Stella Legere.  We both went for the pork tenderloin, having tried it before and been very pleased.

The pork was savoury and came swimming in a delicious mushroom gravy which kept it moist.  The fries were tasty and the veg was nothing to scoff at (although standard fare and nothing more).  My dining partner and I were both disappointed with the portion size (I counted four motuthfuls of meat on the whole plate) and when we brought this to our server's attention she was good enough to bring out a second helping on the house.  Still, I remember the portion being a significantly larger last time (even after the topup) and am not sure what the future holds for this plate.

I've been to this place a few times. It has a great selection of
beers ( many Belgian ) as well as some tasty pub food at very
reasonable prices. The atmosphere reminds me of many of
the taverns and pubs in Belgium. Great place to have a beer
and a bite if your visiting the AGO or happen to be in the area.

Sometimes it sucks going on a great Yelp outing. I have so much fun that I almost forget how bad a place might be.

My review is pretty much the same as some of the others here. Good beer selection. Average food. Average service. It took forever for us to get a drink refill and somehow Danielle and I both received our bills awhile after everyone else. Even the drink I had could've been better. It was called Eat My Cherry (vanilla liqueur, cherry liqueur and Coke). It tasted almost like my high school concoctions of amaretto and coke, just slightly bitter than my version.

Wouldn't be my first choice but I wouldn't write it off for a second visit.

this place gets my props. i was here with a friend the other summer and two bottles of wine and 3 shared appetizers (maybe more?) came to under $100. maybe $80, i can't remember? it was pretty reasonable. it's a comfortable room and the food was good, but not memorable. it was packed with a mixed crowd that skewed older.
