After a fruitless trip to Pacific Boarder, I was sent here to find some cross country ski wax -- a Christmas present for my Dad.

I'd been repeating my mantra of -3 C to -8 C as I walked down Fourth, and proceeded directly to the lady at the cash to get some help. This first thing she wanted to know was if I wanted glide or some other kind of wax. Huh. Repeating my mantra, -3 C to -8 C, did nothing to answer her. So she problem solved and asked if the skis were new or old. Definitely old.

Madame Helpful then narrowed it down (perhaps through a telepathic connection with my Dad?) to a film-sized blue container that closely fit my temperature mantra. I paid $10 with tax, and left promptly.

The rest of the store, had I lingered however, is the place to head for cross-country skis and related products. They run day trips and even rent snow shoes for $10. A good spot if you're looking to mix it up from a winter full of half-pipes and downhill.

After spending 2 decades living in a city where I could ski right out the door, and two years in Norway where each 'kommune' has km after km of marked trails (Oslo boasts 1000 km--or is it 2000 km?) the effort to go cross-country skiing in Vancouver is considerable. First, it's way up the mountain with no public transit--this seems shameful. Second, it's expensive. Where I come from (and in Norway), it's free, a basic amenity for the public

But, once up at Cypress, it is divine. And all the better because this llittle shop on 4th, Sigge's, caters to those of us who love skinny skis.  They are friendly,, knowledgeable and supportive They have all the latest and greatest XC ski gear. Runners, too, will love this place.
