    I LOVE their bagel sandwiches! It's a must-have!

A visit to Siegel's Bagels is something I must do every time I visit Granville Public Market. Made fresh continuously throughout the day, Siegel's bagels are perfectly baked with a nice, chewy and soft center. I've tried two of their sandwiches so far:

    * Montreal Smoked Meat made with tender, juicy, sliced meat.
    * Lox and Cream Cheese with Winnipeg cream cheese, wild sockeye smoked salmon, onions and capers.

Both are delicious! Be sure to eat the bagels INSIDE the public market. The seagulls hovering in the pier outside are vicious and will surely want a piece of your food.

    Cost: $9-10 per sandwich.

I have eaten only one thing at Siegel's Bagels, but if it is a picture of taste of the other items here.... I LOVE THIS PLACE!!!  They have the best Smoked Meat-filled bagels ever... I could eat those for breakfast, lunch and dinner and at only $5 each, they are a steal.  They don't just cut the bagel in half and put a slice of smoked meat in the middle.... HECK NO... They seamlessly pack that sucker with all the smoked meat it can handle.... Every time we go into the Granville Public Market, my partner and I by one and think very heavily about buying another for home... Must have in Vancouver when on Granville Island... Grab a Smoked Meat-filled Bagel...

    And as always... Have fun!!!

If I could give a zero rating I would-this place is unbelievably bad.

From the nasty snotty staff to the chronically mendacious 'management' to the cardboard like product this operation is a boil on the face of Granville Island Market.

Avoid, Avoid, Avoid-you'll be Happy you did.

Siegel's on Granville Island in the Market has a solid selection of unique bagels, including fruit & nut, rosemary & rocksalt, carraway, among some classics. Their cream cheeses are fantastic too; the dill one rocks! The best deal is getting a variety of a dozen of their day-olds, which usually comes to under 5$! I've had mixed experiences with the staff, but usually I'm on a mission and thus know what I'm looking for.
Economically worth buying a big bag and eating half a bagel in the mornings, a different kind every day. Lasts for so long!

I came by to try one of the bagels here at Siegel's and enjoyed a sesame topped bagel with a dash of butter. The bagel had a light toast which allowed me to appreciate the pillow/chewy texture of the bagel while indulging in the yummy buttery taste.

I'll try to the lox bagel next time!

Yummy yummy bagels! Perfect density, soft inside, and crispy outside.

They also sells those little croissants thingie that is sooo good. I love the apricot and chocolate ones. I think the cinnamon one is way too sugary.

    It's a bit pricy. A dozen bagel is $10. A bagel + lox + cream cheese is $8-9. Hence -1 star.

We still went back a few days later for a dozen of bagels tho. It's worth it!

Love the bagels here. Only wish is that they were a little less expensive, but for the quality of bagel here, I will pay for it.
Rosemary and Rock salt toasted with butter. Oh. My. God. My boyfriend says they are too salty, but I think they are absolutely amazing. You can now get these bagels through http://Spud.ca at (I think) a small discount!

True bagel lovers are divided (in both their loyalty and favour) between the Montreal and New York styles. Siegel's Bagels is firmly in the Montreal-style camp (boasting a smaller, chewy, denser disk that is boiled before being baked in a wood-burning stove) vs. the New York-style (which is not boiled before being baked, resulting in a somewhat fluffier texture).

Siegel's has been in business in Vancouver for 25 years and is a staple in the city, operating locations on both Granville Island and their central, 24-hour bakery/restaurant a few blocks from Kits Beach. In addition to a wide variety of bagels (traditional poppy and sesame seed, sweet cinnamon-raisin and blueberry, a fully-loaded savoury everything) the bakeries offer Eastern European favourites like cinnamon, chocolate, or apricot rugellah and poppy seed hamentashen.

It's almost impossible to saunter by a Siegel's and not be overwhelmed by the sweet smell of baking and it's refreshing to see real people taking time and care over something as simple as a bagel. The difference really does come through in the product. Siegel's bagels are readily available in stores throughout the Lower Mainland, but there is something to be said for going to one of their locations in person and selecting a fresh dozen for yourself.

The bagels are not particularly cheap ($1 each or $9.95 for a dozen, except on Tuesdays when they offer a dozen for $8.25) but are a good snack when toasted and coupled with a schmear of smoked salmon cream cheese ($3.50).

For something more substantial, they also offer a range of custom sandwiches, breakfast and lunch items (check the location) as well bagels baked with fillings ranging from Montreal smoked meat, spinach and feta, or a sweet cheese ($4.95).

So I had to wait in line a little longer because people kept butting in front of me. These things happen on the weekend when you're standing in the chaotic midst of Granville Island's Public Market.

The wait - worth it! Starving, I snagged an everything bagel with cream cheese (note: this is my bagel of choice) and then noticed that they don't accept debit transactions under $5. (oh-oh - am I the only one who runs cashless through the city?)

Not to worry, there was a walnut and chocolate rugelach that was calling my name. (Come to me oh sweet chocolatey goodness!) But I was still below the $5 mark. And the lovely girl just let it slide. Gotta love a little bit 'o kindness to go with my cheese and chocolate.

Armed with my savoury and sweet weapons I sat and watched a man dislocate his shoulder a number of times for a group of spectators. Ah - wholesome entertainment. Nothing could deter me from my enjoyment. And I had the seeds and walnutty goodness in my teeth all day long to remind me!

I'm not quite sure that they are the "possibly the best bagels in the world," but they do make some pretty tasty ones.  We decided to try the spinach stuffed bagel- sounded kinda weird, but in reality, a delicious melding of spinach and bagel (its reminiscent of a baked piroshki, except its in the shape of a bagel).

The spinach had a slight kick to it and it worked really well with the sweetness of the bagel.  I could have had more, but with all the other things we were eating at the Public Market, we were just running out of real estate in the stomach.

They also have a variety of other bagels (Montreal-style versus NY-style) and apparently sandwiches as well.

There are only three things that I like to do on Saturday mornings.  Sleep, tan, shop, or go in search of my Jewish husband.  And so on a recent, chilly Saturday morning in Vancouver, I called my Yiddish Matchmaker, Hadassah, who demanded I get my cute ass to Siegel's Bagels on Granville Island.

I was nearly distracted by the Gucci store on my way to the ferry (which, by the way, who takes a ferry anywhere??  Helicopter, hEllO, do they know who I am?).  Since there was no landing pad at the dock, I had to squeeze into the smallest little aquabus I'd ever seen.  I knew I was in the right place because the dock was decorated in gay flags.

FYI, Canadians are too friendly for me.  At 8:30 in the morning, I don't see how anyone can smile.

I found myself on Granville Island, surrounded by mountains with snowy tips, and hungry Canadians.  "Bagels," I thought?  Did Hadassah think I'd find my dream Jew by stuffing a cream cheese'd pastry into my petite mouth?  Worth a try!

Imagine my utter shock when I arrived at Siegel's Bagels and found no Jews!  Instead I was bombarded by three older women speaking Asianese, serving me samples of smoked meat in a napkin, and then asking me what type of bagel I wanted my lox & cream cheese on.  Lox?  Did they want a hair sample?  I give these out sparingly, and standard procedure is to go through my broker (i.e. my stylist Drako at Hair Dragon in Miami, hEllO, who else?).

I requested a wheat (duh) bagel with lox and cream cheese and NO OnIonS.  hErrO, what beautiful Jew will want to meet a hot latInO like me who has onion breath?  At the register they asked me in Asianese if I wanted anything else, and since I'm slightly fluent I requested two rugelachs (or is it rugelachi?  I don't know.  I missed that day in pastry class).  The apricot was delicious, and chocolate walnut was a close second.

In Miami there are no such things as bagels.  They've all been deep-fried by the Cubans.  However if you take a roll (don't deep-fry it, fellow latinos), and cut out a round hole, apparently the Jews like this.  Maybe it's a code word for something.  But I swear I've seen them in Dunkin Donuts and I've never seen a Jewish person in Dunkin Donuts so I don't know, I'm confused.  Anyway, this 'thing' was quite tasty, except for the onions which despite my explicit instructions were snuck into my sandwich.  Clearly this older lady working at Siegel's was trying to foil my matchmaking attempts.  She must be arch-enemies with Haddasah.  I've heard of these Brooklyn-Vancouver rivalries but had never seen one until that day.

Siegel's Bagels is a wonderful treat, and worth a ferry ride.  As many choices as Dunkins has of donuts, this place has of bagels.  Bagels are the new "black."  They are totally slim, and if a 27-waist like me can eat them, you normal people can too.  How to get there?  Look for the gay flags.  Just watch out for the employees, especially if you're trying to find your dream man on Granville Island.

    One word: Damn!!

Listen guys, don't waste your time here, just go get this amazing bagel!!
I had the "Smoked Meat" bagel and what can I say, it is perfect.

We are talking about Montreal style slowly smoked brisket, cut thin and piled high, very very high. the bagels are cooked and baked at the spot and are warm, crispy on the outside and fluffy in the middle. a smear of mustard and a pickle for the company = heaven.

    Bottom line: food orgasm.

I'm definitely going back to Vancouver for this one! :)

Siegal's Bagels are undoubtedly one of the best places in the city go get bagels, just don't say their name five times fast.    They have a great pizza-style bagel that is little more than a tomatoe-sauce filled pepperoni bagel of happiness, but it hits the spot provided they have any left, or have any coming out of their oven at 5am.

Siegal's is an incredible gem to stumble onto especially if you are at their Cornwall location right after the Burrard street Bridge. If you're at the beach in the summer time and want a filling snack, or a post-drinking-walk-home-from-downtown-over-the-bri dge filler to get you by Siegal's hits the spot.

The staff are also super friendly and you can get great deals on their special bagel days.

If you give this place 4 stars, you don't know jack about bagels. We Americans are used to our Einstein's and Bruegger's and anything that deviates from it, we criticize.

Be warned, these are the freshest of fresh, high-quality AUTHENTIC BAGELS; you can't get any more authentic than these. These are kettle-boiled and baked in a 25 ton wood-burning oven. I think I even weirded out the older man who was boiling and baking the bagels as I was just staring at him and his bagel-making perfection.

Angela H., why the hell did you get the spinach stuffed bagel if it sounded weird? Angela should stick to Einstein's bagels.

You got to be aggressive if your going to get a bagel here! I usually buy the flavor i love for $1 and then bring my own cream cheese.
I am in love with the Rosemary rock salt one..
I am tempted by the breakfast bagel, but for $6 it seems a little steep.. or maybe i am just cheap.
Bagels are warm and fresh, and just perfect.

I just ate, but bagels came to my mind- and I'm instantly thinking about Siegel's and if it's worth venturing out in the rain/snow to get one.

Usually I just get the ultra basic- plain with (plain) cream cheese.  They do it so good!  The texture of the bread is not too tough, but has a nice firmness to it.  The cream cheese is flavorful and silky.

My friend from New York, when visiting, tried a plain with lox and cream cheese.  She loved it.  She wouldn't say it was "better" than what she could get at home, but it was "damn good."

Yes, this is by far the best bagel place in Vancouver. I have a soft spot in my heart for Montreal-style bagels, but Siegel's definitely comes in as a close second. And I know it's starting to get redundant but their spinach bagels are the best! I dream of them too! I wasn't expecting it be so good, but heating it over the steam thing keeps it moist and oh-so-fresh tasting. I can't believe it's taken me so long to try their bagels! The combination of red peppers and the salty cheese really balanced well with the sweetness of the bagel.

Will definitely come back again. I intend to make a concerted effort to try something else but with the vivid memory of the spinach bagel floating through my thoughts, I don't know if I'll be able to resist it.

Ok, Vancouver is not a city that it is easy to find a good bagel in.  Siegal's offers Montreal style bagels that are an above average version.  This is their 2nd location (the main shop is on Cornwall), and  I have found the quality to be much less consistent here.  The Cornwall location is the place to get their best product.  I have a more detailed yelp about that location here:  http://www.yelp.ca/biz...
