the best place to have lunch on a rainy work-day (especially since it's right across the street from where i work). generous servings, super cheap (it's under $10 for a huge bowl of ramen soup), and delicious.
my favourite is the chicken/beef ramen.
it gets super busy though, since it's not a huge place, so make sure to get there early or late, to beat the downtown lunch rush. -

So I paid $14 for chicken ramen, after tax and tip. The serving size looks huge, but it's deceiving. The bean sprouts alone could fill a miso soup size bowl (I know this, because I extracted them just to see, since I was having a hard time finding where the actual ramen was). I can handle a few beansprouts, but this was way overboard, totally overwhelming the meal. I wasn't a big fan of the soup either (a sign of a good ramen place is if I slurp up most of the soup along with the ramen). On the plus side there was a generous serving of meat.
Service was quick. Place was nice. FYI they do not take Amex.
This place definitely benefits from the downtown lunch crowd and the fact they aren't located near (thus don't have to compete with) the cluster of Ramen places on Robson and Denman. -

This restaurant has been around for years and years. Today was my first visit in probably close to 10 years. Back then, this was my go to place for ramen, curry and other rice dishes. I thought it was pretty decent.
Fast forward to today. After being spoiled by ramen row, or ramen street, down by Robson and Denman, this place, unfortunately does not compare.
I had a spicy chicken ramen. It was edible, that's for sure, and there's nothing wrong with that. However, the food was very one dimensional. The noodles were not as fresh.
Don't get me wrong, if you want your belly full, this place will do it . If you want your taste buds elevated to another level, this is not the place for you. Pricing is ~$1-$2 less than the places on ramen row.
The place is extremely busy during lunch hour. Best to come just before or after lunch. -

My wife and I dropped by here today on our first day in Vancouver. It was pouring rain outside and we were soaked. We managed to get a table in the middle of the lunch rush without a problem. We ordered the Chashu Udon and the Gomoku Ramen along with some gyoza.
The gyoza were tasty, but I prefer mine to be crispier than the ones here. Both bowls of noodles were nice and warm which was great considering the cold weather! My bowl was a little overfilled with sprouts, but other than that it was quite tasty.
All in all the service was great, the food was ok and the price was fine for a downtown location. I'd definitely come back if I was in the area, but I think I'd aim to try one of the fried rice bowls instead as those looked more to my liking :). -

Shogun is my favourite place to have ramen at lunch time, especially downtown. The prices are affordable and the bowls of ramen are huge! What I love most is their curry ramen - no one does it like them.
The sushi is okay, pretty average. Ramen is THE star. How authentic? Well, I would say that Santouka and Kintaro are probably ahead of them in that category.
Sadly, I no longer work near the area, so haven't been able to enjoy more of their delicious noodles. They are only open on the weekdays for lunch. Until the next work holiday! -

This place wouldn't survive a second if it was on the ramen strip at denman and Robson. Not a chance. Overly salty miso broth, greasy noodles, no interesting vegetables save for some sprouts and a bit of corn. and not a speck of meat. If you like this stuff you need to get out more.

Ordered Miso Wanton Ramen. Presentation was pleasing, the wantons were good enough but the broth was "maybe shouldn't have ordered soup".
Shogun filled my belly and busy as they were, chased me down the street with a bag of coffee capsules I'd left under the table. Nice! -

I'm surprised that this place only has one review considering how busy it normally is.
I use to be a big fan of shogun. Liked their ramen and service. As Beau K said, it's a bit overpriced, but that's what you get for the business core location.
However, having begun to sample restaurants outside of that location, I've realized that there are much better places to go.
So if you're strapped for time and are around Hornby and Pender, then this place will definitely satisfy.
But I wouldn't make a trip across town for it. -

I like Shogun. It's a bit overpriced but I guess that's what you get for this location.
Good noodles, good broth, good meat, good veggies. I found that everything is very balanced in proportion. A bowl of ramen will cost about $9-$10, tax and tip included.
I like that the broth is lighter and a bit cleaner in taste than some other joints that have a thicker broth.
Business closes at 4pm on weekdays so this place really caters to the downtown lunch crowd. It's a nice, light alternative to Kintaro, Benkei and Motomachi. -

So I was starving the other day, and I emailed my girlfriend and said "please give me recommendations for lunch." She threw this out there with a number of other ideas. I am always in the mood for noodles so it was the obvious choice.
I walked in and the place is your typical little lunch spot in terms of decor and wait staff. I was immediately seated (I got there before 12pm) and was handed a menu and tea in short order. I looked at the menu and my mouth began to water. The food looked delish. I decided to go with the Spicy Yakisoba served with meat. I barely waited five minutes before the food was served. I took the first bite and knew I was in trouble. The food was so delish that I knew I'd have to convince myself not to eat the whole serving and be ridiculously uncomfortable afterwards. My mouth and stomach didn't care. I had to remind myself to breathe because I didn't want to waste time doing that when I could be eating. The noodles were well cooked and the spicy sauce and the meat were perfect accompaniments. It was damn near perfect.
On my way back to my office, I called my girlfriend and thanked her profusely and then when I got back to my office started making plans w/ co-workers to go again. Just know, it gets busy so either get there early or be prepared to have a bit of a wait...but so worth it!!! -

This ramen is pretty mediocre, but I'll give them an extra star for service. They are incredibly fast and efficient, I ordered take out and they took my order immediately and had it ready to go in five minutes, which is just what you need when you are in a hurry for lunch.
The broth for the soup is pretty bland and the chicken I had in it had lots of grit and fat on it, so it was kind of chewy and hard to eat. It's around the corner from my office, though, so I will probably go back on the next rainy day when all I really need is something hot. -

I work around the corner from this busy weekday noodle house. They really know how to make the most out of the relatively small space they have by packing the place and providing fast service. The food is pretty good and they've been very consistent over the past 4 years I've been a regular.
I couldn't help but laugh when I read a few other reviews make comments about it being "a bit over-priced". Nothing could be further from the truth. Who are these other reviewers, homeless people? You can get in and out of there with all the green tea you can drink, a Miso soup, and a large portion of Beef or chicken Yakisoba or Terriaki Chicken or beef on rice for under $10 - and this is right in the heart of the business district. You can't do better than that in the food courts! What are these people comparing the prices to? Crazy. This is one of the best value sit down restaurants I've ever been to in my life. -

Shogun is my favorite lunch place downtown. Service is quick and friendly plus everything is great. I have been going to Shogun for many years and they never let me down. The best yakisoba ever!
