OMG! This place rocks the brown rice like no other. Well except the other Shizen ya.
It's only "Natural" to think that there could be no other place better. And there isn't, but there is an equal.
Yes. Mmmmmm There is another. (in a Yoda like voice).
Thanks to great reviews here by Colene C and HIlda L.
Great stuff! -

We live a block from here,
its close, prices are fair and the customer service has always been polite.
I have ate here once dine in - the rest of the times have been take out.
Normally, I find the food to be nice, slightly bland but not greasy at all.
I have had one bad experience where the beef I ordered was super fatty and over sauced. This turned me off of the place for awhile, or I just ordered chicken.
Yesterday BF was starving and had to be at work very shortly. We called in our order for pick up. Told us it would be ready in 10m.
I go down at the exact time. Wait in line behind some lady who seems to be having issues with something... either on deciding what to order, or how to pay- who knows, but now its been 15 min.
Finally I go up to pay, and instead of getting a bag of food to go,
I stand there like an idiot.
No body tells me what is going on, so I sit and wait, For at least another 5 or 7 mins.
By the time I had the food it had been 25 m since we placed the order by phone. So much for 10 minutes!
I ordered the beef teriyaki combo: Sukiyaki beef with organic vegetable teriyaki sauce, brown rice, spinach gomaae, and organic salad.
The spinach gomaae, was OK, a bit soggy and i did have to drain off excess dressing as usual.Could of had more flavor
( salt or soy sauce was lacking indeed)
The organic salad was nothing to write home about ( Yawn)
Rice was yummy, Beef had potential, but was way fatty/over marbled. We had asked for lite sauce, and they just put the entire sauce on the side, which was nice, but again it made the beef supper bland- almost like sucking on a damp paper towel.
Lucky for Vaughn, His Dynamite roll was yummy, and he ate most of his soup.
He had no complaints, but was hungry again in less then an hour! -

I came here for lunch one day with a friend and had the beef teriyaki combo: Sukiyaki beef with organic vegetable teriyaki sauce, brown rice, spinach gomaae, and organic salad. The dish was not salty which is great because I have had a lot of salty beef teriyakis at other Japanese restaurants. The brown rice was a nice addition and makes it feel you are eating something healthier. The salad was nothing too special in my opinion.
My friend wanted to substitute her salad for something else but the restaurant could not allow that.
I will try the sushi next time. -

Wow, it's true about the other yelpers, finally made the leap to try 'organic' sushi; it's almost like if there was ever such a thing as 'organic dim sum', thus my hesitation..;
I'd have to say that the brown rice, though as ugly as it looks, tasted really good! Ordered the California roll w/ organic avocado, and of course, crab. real for sure lol.
It did take a bit getting used to seeing the Ocean Wise logo throughout their menu...
Really, it's not pricey as some would think, obviously compared to the cheap ones but I'll go back again to try the rest of the stuff. -
Review from Colene C.
I've walked by this restaurant a bunch but never went inside because it just didn't look that appealing from the outside. But I should know never to judge a book by its cover. Inside, there is a trove of good eats: healthy sushi, organic ingredients, brown rice, tons of veggie options AND Ocean Wise.
For those people unconvinced by brown rice in their sushi, it's not a huge adjustment to make. The rice is neither too hard or too mushy. I was really happy with my yam tempura roll, especially since the tempura is made from whole wheat batter.
It's not budget sushi but that's not why you come here. You come to feel healthy and have a guaranteed meal that will make you feel good about eating. -

Shizen Ya is a great little spot for a quick work lunch located on Hornby street directly across from the courthouse. If you like all organic products, vegetarian and vegan Japanese dishes you will love Shizen Ya. The quality of the food is really above many other downtown sushi locations and there is no doubt that all ingredients down to the brown rice and wasabi are organic. Given that it is all organic it tends to be a little pricier than other sushi spots but then again you are paying a bit extra for the quality. It was so healthy that I did indeed feel a bit hungry not so long after (but then again that's just me on an average day). Try for yourself and let me know what you think.

Got the munchies and ended up here.
Restaurant is quite narrow, but they managed to somehow squeeze some tables into here. With that said, we took the biggest table, which had a whopping 4 seats.
Service was quick, and very friendly. There's something about Japanese staff in general. The food came quickly, and so did the bill (we asked for it).
Mango California roll - fresh mango.
Blossom roll - basically a California roll with raw salmon on top. Tasty, but not $12 tasty.
Salmon Carpaccio - also delicious, but as you are chewing on it, you can hear the sound of your hard-earned cash vapourizing into thin air. And by air I really mean their cash register.
The quality was decent, but boy was it expensive. $10+ for a roll is pretty insane. As you can guess, my friends and I left hungry.
If you like dropping a ton of coinage for quality sushi, this is not a bad place. But the perceived lack of value in my books prevents me from personally coming back. -

Sushi is arguably the most virtuous meal you can go out for, healthwise. Fish, veggies, rice, soy sauce - nothing much bad for you there. Shizen Ya makes it practically saintly by emphasizing Ocean Wise seafood (like local wild sockeye and albacore tuna), organic veggies and greens, and brown rice. And though I've never been big on brown rice, it does add a sweet, nutty element of flavour to the sushi.
Unlike a lot of the sushi shacks around Vancouver, Shizen Ya is Japanese run. Few countries take their seafood as seriously as Japan - just take a walk through Tsukiji Market if you're ever up really, really early in Tokyo - and quality is important when it comes to eating raw fish.
We went for dinner one night and found that the atmosphere was very spare, yet cozy at the same time. There are a just a few tables in a very long, narrow room with high green walls. But there was a lot on the menu ... I wanted to try almost everything. We eventually settled on some gyozas, sockeye salmon sashimi, the Sakura Blossom roll, and an assortment of tempura. The sockeye salmon tempura was fabulous - I don't know why more places don't do this. I also really enjoyed the Sakura Blossom roll, a rich combo of (real) crab and tuna and avocado wrapped with a sliver of sockeye. Beautifully presented, and not too big or creamy.
Unfortunately, the matcha creme brulee for dessert was sold out on the night we visited. But it sounds delicious, so I guess that means a return trip soon. -

Based on the ratings, I decided to try this new place with a girl friend of mine.
When we arrived, we ordered what people had recommended from their reviews. We ordered the following:
-Dragon Roll (eel and organic avocado on wild sockeye salmon, cream cheese and cucumber roll) --. the cream cheese was a little too strong...something that I didn`t like. We thought that the rolls on the menu were big but when they actually came, the sushi was small.
-Natural Bomber (Crunchy tiger prawn, juicy fresh crab, cucumber, with brown rice) - this was pretty good. The prawn was juicy and the crab was tasty and fresh. Very good combo especially with the avocado.
-Spicy Tuna Sashami - this was alright but it wasn`t as good as Sushi Town. Sushi Town has bigger portions and at a better price. Handsdown Sushi Town is good
We then later ordered the Blossom Roll (juicy crab, tuna, cucumber and avocado, wrapped with sockeye salmon and brown rice). This took about 30 minutes even though the place was not busy. This is minus one point.
The other thing that I didn`t like about this place was that there were little black flies flying around in our food. Very unappetizing.
Other than that, the sushi was good. A very cute place to check out. -

Stopped in for a quick dinner and was impressed by the lovely tuna and salmon nigiri--thick slabs of melt-in-your mouth fish. Service was attentive. Atmosphere was quiet.

this place totally hit the spot. we were looking for simple, fresh sushi in a homey unpretentious environment after suffering through rodney's oyster bar. so glad we found shizen-ya on yelp! i never would've thought a gem like this would exist so close to the busy shopping street of robson.
at first sight of the limited fish menu, touting brown sushi rice and organic/sustainable fish, i got a bit wary... no hamachi? no scallops? and brown rice only?
we ended up ordering a sashimi plate, the tuna tataki, tofu & avo salad, and a few pieces of scallop and spicy salmon nigiri... and then ordered another FULL round because the sushi was outstanding -- super fresh, nicely textured and generously portioned. tuna is not usually a favorite of mine, but i couldn't get enough at shinzen-ya! it was fatty, flavorable and yes, melt-in-your-mouth. also, the brown rice was perfectly cooked and seasoned -- stuck together well without becoming mushy, but still retained that nubby feel.
wish we had been hungrier, then we could've tried more items.. their dinner combo (sunomono, miso soup, sashimi, and beef or chicken entree) for only $14.95 looked like a great value.
notes: the restaurant itself seats less than 20, layout isn't really conducive for large groups, and it's set in an office building -- if you use the restroom, you'll need a key to get in. also pay your bill at the counter! -

Today seemed like a good day to try something new for lunch (and we were going to go for dinner here last night but they are closed on Sundays!) I stuck with the basics: the Sushi & Udon Lunch Combo with a vegetable miso on the side. I have never had Udon before so I asked for the Chicken Udon. The combo came with green salad, 3 pieces Dynamite Roll, on brown rice, and 3 pieces Salmon/Avocado. The sushi is excellent - I am loving the brown rice! At first bite, I thought the Udon rather plain ... and then noticed the little container of spices. So on second bite, much better (and a little spicier!) The miso is good although it wasn't much different than other miso soups. Overall, not a huge fan of the Udon (plus it's not very "eatable" at your desk at work :P ) - the chicken in the Udon was plentiful at least - but everything else is very well done & very fresh. I look forward to trying something else next lunch time.
FYI: for those of us doing take-out, the restaurant provides perfect containers for transporting - there was no spillage/no mess. -

Oh Yummy!
I took my mom out for dinner on Tuesday, November 15th (Hornby location), and it was great! I will definitely go back again...and again...and again. :)
It's unfortunate though that you can't order the lunch combos at dinner, not even for a "dinner" price. :( I don't eat raw fish - their dinnertime combos come with sashimi, but the lunch ones do not so I was a bit disappointed in that regard. I was, however, VERY impressed with most of what we ordered. And I am sooooooo happy to have finally found a Japanese restaurant that serves oranic food and brown rice (at no extra charge!).
We weren't very adventurous, mainly because my mom has never really had Japanese food and I've been having issues with certain types of foods. Anyway, we started with the vegetable miso soup. It didn't really have any veggies in it, so that was a little disappointing. BUT, I was cold out so it was nice to warm up with some soup. Honestly I have had REALLY good miso soup only ONCE in my life (at IKI in Kits). The green tea is reallllllly good - probably the yummiest I have had in any Japanese restaurant. We also had the Sunomono Salad and Spinach Gomaae. Both were really delicious and flavourful. I love that they use brown rice noodles in the Sunomono! Yessss. We also had the braised chicken breast with organic miso teriyaki....WOW! I can't believe how tender and tasty it was It was so nice to finally go to a Japanese restaurant that serves a boneless skinless piece of chicken! I can't wait to eat it again. We also shared a small bowl of brown rice to eat with our chicken. The small rice was quite big and we didn't even finish it. We shared a yam and avocado roll too...can't go wrong with those. They are my favourite! For dessert we shared the green tea creme brulee. The top was really nicely caramelized, but the actual creme brulee part was too cold for my liking - I like it slightly warm. Also, the green tea taste was far too strong for me. I think it just wasn't to my taste, but I think I can understand why some people would like it. It's just not for me. Our bill came to about $45 (incl tax, but not incl tip).
I have to make sure to note that this was the FIRST time I have ever eaten Japanese food and didn't feel thirsty the rest of the evening! Awesome. -
Review from Pat M.
Very good sushi (although I'd say, stick with the raw fish and skip the cooked chicken breast roll), robust miso soup (includes vegetables), great service, and good udon (I'd recommend the vegetable vs. the chicken).
The place is very small, but the service is great and they offer organic options, which attracted my wife and I. Definitely worth checking out if you are in downtown Vancouver. -

Sweet Jebus am I excited to write about Shizen-Ya! Finally, a fully organic, ocean wise, sustainable sushi joint in Vancouver! On top of all this progressive awesomeness, they serve brown rice which is tops for me due to various white rice sensitivities.
I've eaten in and taken out here often enough to be on a first name basis with the lovely, accommodating and ALWAYS friendly staff of Shizen-Ya. They fully commit to the organic, sustainable route not only sushi but also with the beverages from tea to organic Japanese beer and Saki.
If you're used to all-you-can eat god-knows-where-it-came-from, shark-fin infested cheap sushi resto's...all the more reason to get your arse to Shizen Ya. Personally I think the prices are completely reasonable considering the quality, which is something I am no longer willing to sacrifice on and as a responsible citizen, neither should you.
The resto space is quite tiny, seating about 20-25 people, cozy and bright with high ceilings. Everything prepared is excellent, my particular favourite is the spicy tuna sashimi which just melts in your mouth.
Sublime, environmentally responsible and open reasonably late. GO! -

Wow! What a selection! Organic, sustainable, vegetarian (and non-vegetarian for others)...is it a wonder that such a "green" restaurant would be found in Vancouver of all places?
Located in the very urban downtown entertainment district, I was actually perusing a takeout menu outside this place when a patron came out after her meal and told me, "You must try this place! The food here is so delicious!" Not one to turn down such an emphatic recommendation, I ventured in. Cozy atmosphere. Yes, 10 foot ceilings but limited seating (maybe only 10-12 small tables). Perfect for a comfortable little tete-a-tete with a friend/colleague or a solo diner like myself. If the staff were any more cheery and courteous, well, I don't know...but they could really make your day. ^_^
I ordered the Vegetarian Udon (which was what I was craving) despite the other impressive picks on the menu - organic quinoa inari!! The udon was nicely presented with lots of colourrful veggies and hit the spot perfectly for a nice satisfying lunch without me needing to order extra. (Guess I'll have to come back for the spicy tuna sashimi!).
The price was reasonable for good quality. It's so nice to know that it's all sustainable and green too! Would I come back? Sure! Do I recommend it! Yes! ^^ -
Review from Beata B.
I love sushi. It has to be really slimy for me not to like it, but I only get chirashi if I know that the fish will be super fresh. The best chirashi-don I've had is still (sadly) in Tokyo, but the one I had in Shizen Ya comes awfully close. It was delicious. The place is very clean and seems to be committed to serving organic, fresh food. They also know how to make brown rice here. Considering that there are on average about three sushi restaurants on every block in Vancouver, I hope this little place stays in business.

From the viewpoint of Japanese, their service is very comfortable.
As other guys mentioned, small restaurant but enough for a daily meal.
I tried tempra, they use whole wheat for it, was not sophisticated but good enough for my dinner. -

Great little place with fresh tasting and reasonably priced Japanese fare. This place has really great deals if you consider that they only serve organic, ocean wise food and only use brown rice for their rolls.
I docked this place for one star because my friend experienced a few sushi rolls that contained bones and fish scales, but not a huge biggie.
Finally, the tea was really good. Probably the best green tea I've drank at a Japanese restaurant. It was actually green, and not yellow or brown like the tea you get at those Chinese or Korean run Japanese restaurants.

Really great little (literally) place. I really like how they use real crab meat, brown rice and organic greens. If I'm honest though the fillings are not the biggest. But it is good, healthy and tasty sushi. Thumb up from me.

I love this sushi place! My favourite is the rice bowl, that comes with brown rice and sashimi. Most of the food is a bit pricey but worth it, since it's organic. The decor is very "modern meets zen." One of my favourite quality sushi places.

Wow, am I ever happy we decided to stop in and try this place. Walked past it every day without ever noticing it.
Great place for something a little different, everything on the menu is organic, from the brown rice (only) sushi to the ocean wise fish, everything is fresh, crisp and delicious.
I am in no way a health or organic food nut, I couldn't care less to be honest, but the fact that this sushi is delicious, original, good value AND healthy....how can you go wrong?!
The 2 specialty rolls, the sakura and the bomber roll are awesome! I get one of each. Everything is served with piles of real white ginger, love it!
Awesome sashimi quartet salad, the ebi sunamono was not typical, and I wouldn't order it again, but that's just me.
The spicy tuna rolls are great, they have a hidden little piece of tempura that add an extra level of crunch, great surprise!
If you're in the area and up for something new and different, definitely stop in and give it a try. -

Like others, I noticed this place walking around downtown, particularly because of the brown rice sushi. But before I get to the good stuff, I do have one minor complaint: who puts bits of tempura in a spicy tuna roll?? I ordered a combo and specifically asked to have the dynamite roll substituted for something else (to avoid the gluten in the tempura), and found myself having to pick tempura out of my spicy tuna roll. Weird!
Anyway, aside from that, I am a huge fan of places that offer brown rice sushi. The sushi here was fresh, reasonably priced and very tasty. The staff were friendly and accommodating, too (I thought there was a bit of a language problem with my server but she got my semi-complicated order right, so I was pleasantly surprised.) They also have tons of variety.
I would definitely come back because of the availability of brown rice sushi and the overall quality of the maki. I'm so happy that I found brown rice sushi downtown! I know of two other places that offer it, but I'm pretty certain this was my first brown rice sushi experience downtown. Just ask them to modify the spicy tuna roll or avoid it if you have gluten issues.Listed in: Best Sushi

Came here in the midst of my semi-detox. Could not have white rice and of course I was having massive cravings for sushi. Thank goodness I found this place. It made my week. So I might be a little bias but the other reviews for this place can't be wrong. Brown rice, organic ingredients, msg-free - yet the prices are still very reasonable - what more can you ask for? I liked the Natural Bomber rolls (whole wheat tempura tiger prawn with fresh crab & avocado). I didn't eat in so can't comment on their service. I want to come back soon.

Great place for healthy and organic sushi.
Reasonably priced, and the lunch combos are great. I recommended the chicken udon. The chicken is free range and the broth is amazing, no msg here. They make all their rolls with brown rice and the portions are not overly huge, just right.
DO NOT GO TO THE SUSHI PLACE A COUPLE OF DOORS DOWN. That place has bad service, not as fresh fish.. and the time I went they gave me dirty dishes - yuck. -
Review from Sandra G.

I ate dinner at this place for a friend's birthday and wasn't going to review it until her husband pressured me to. He swore by their sushi rolls and said that all the food was organic and healthy. "Fresh Food Fast" is their motto.
Honestly, when I first walked into this place on Hornby & Nelson I thought to myself, great - another one of these small, cramped Japanese take out joints. And the tables were all spread out so we couldn't really talk to everyone. But the staff closed down the place just for our party. And boy, did this place kick Vegas sushi's ass!
My friend ordered a bunch of their signature rolls for all of us to try so we could taste how good they were - the Dragon Magic Roll is huge and takes up the entire plate. I am kicking myself for not getting a picture, because it's not on their take-out menu. I think this is the one with cream cheese. Anything with cream cheese tastes awesome! The Sakura Blossom Roll ($12.95) looks as good as it tastes and has crab, tuna, cucumber, avocado, brown rice, and salmon. After two bites of these rolls I said to myself, THIS is what sushi is supposed to taste like. And it's significantly cheaper than the sushi I had in Vegas.
The Natural Bomber Roll ($11.95 10 pieces) is also huge: prawn tempura, crab, cucumber, spring mix, brown rice, avocado and sweet sauce. As if all those rolls weren't enough, I ordered the Tofu Steak combo because I had to get a taste of the vegetarian food - most of their food is veggie and approved by Ocean Wise, by the way.
I got a small garden salad to start, and the Tofu steaks were pretty big and filling with 2 servings (man-size) of brown rice and a side of gomaee (sesame spinach). All that was only $7.45. Then I gave into temptation and got the Green Tea Creme Brulee for dessert for $3.95. Yes, it is as good as it sounds.
Our server was awesome - she knew what we all ordered without looking at her notepad. And all the food came out pretty fast. Yes, this place IS small but if you don't manage to get a seat, you can take out and eat on the steps of the art gallery or law courts downtown. Want good sushi in a rush, go to Shizen Ya. Trust me, you won't regret it! -

Small but nice little Japanese restaurant that servers healthy, but delicious food! It is the first time I ever had sushi rolls with brown rice. Tasteted pretty good too. Everything seems to be fresh and organic so the quality tastes great. I had a lunch special with salad, chicken Udon noodle soup, and a cut roll. Prices were good too. Before tax, almost 10 bucks. Not bad for a nice sit down restaurant.

Great Sushi restaurant. Everything was very fresh and they worked hard to accommodate us and our children. Really enjoyed the Magic Dragon Roll which had a nice contrast between crispy and smooth. The gyoza also taste like they get done in a whole wheat based wrapper. We thought that sounded a bit weird but the whole wheat tempura and the brown rice in the nigiri all worked great.

I spent to many days speed walking past this place to actually look inside and at the menu. Brown rice sushi! All organic! All ocean wise! My dreams of a sustainable sushi house have been answered. The even use reusable chop sticks.
The decor is beautiful and inviting as well. You feel relaxed right away. But the food! Wow. I opted for a the veggie udon dinner combo which came with a few pieces of the california roll and the salmon roll. It was so freaking delicious and so fresh. Sometimes you get distracted by the brown rice taste, but the only thing i got distracted by here was the deliciousness of these rolls. The Udon was pure comfort in a bowl and perfect for a fall day. My friends got some of the funky blossom rolls and by the looks on there faces they were extremely happy campers. We paid $10 each.
I look forward to going back to this place forever and ever. I felt like i was cleansed after eating here because we are so used to eating crap with so many perservatives.. not here..only wholesome goodness. -

Only a few smallish tables. We almost walked by because it just looks like any other little fast food Japanese place, but then we saw the sign saying "brown rice - organic". It turns out this place is amazing. Everything on the menu is either organic or oceanwise! We tried the Mango California Roll, which we think should be renamed The Bliss Roll it was so good. Mango laid on top, brown rice, avacado, REAL CRAB, organic greens and it was delicious!!! Did I mention REAL CRAB? All for such a reasonable price. We also tried the organic greens roll (no rice) which came with a delicious sweet & sour sauce for dipping. It was so good we decided to try a dessert - green tea cream brulet. Excellent service. All together we paid $24 for 2 people to eat well plus dessert. We are coming back for sure!!!

I've gotten take out from here quite a few times now, and the fish is always fresh. A lot of their smaller rolls are very reasonably priced (alaska roll or tuna & avocado roll for $2.95). I love their sakura blossom roll (fresh crab meat, wild salmon, tuna, brown rice on a bed of greens) and their natural bomber roll (tiger prawn whole wheat tempura, fresh crab meat, spring mix greens and brown rice). They also have a seasonal rolls which are delicious, and dinner specials. If I feel like eating some light sushi, I always end up here.

I am putting this place on my fantasy street of ideal restaurants: it's that good. I was visiting Vancouver, stopped in because of Yelp's recommendations, and then proceeded to eat here three days in a row. I wish wish wish that I could get sushi with brown rice and vegan agedashi tofu at home; I think I'd eat at this place five times a week if it were in my neighborhood. The food is fresh and creatively prepared; the fish are marked 'ocean friendly' or not; the service is welcoming and friendly. Definitely five stars.

crisp organic greens, wholesome, honest (no MSG), brown rice -- friendly appreciative staff. Humble mom and pop small restaurant, meaning little ambiance, (but you can leave that chemically induced migraine outside for sure). I enjoyed the Wild Sockeye Salmon Tataki Salad. I don't prefer white-meat chicken because it can be dry, but breast is what they exclusively serve. It's an individual preference though. Enjoy!
