I had a great time here for a girls night out last week!
I'll start off my positive review with the one criticism I have: we made a reservation for our small group of 3 for 6:30pm on Friday night. We weren't seated until a bit after 7pm with no apologies. A little disappointing, but we weren't too fazed at the time.
Sorry I don't know the names of these dishes, my friends ordered. We shared:
a little sauteed spinach dish with a yummy steak sauce over it
lightly panfried tofu dish
Islander roll
maki with spicy salmon and avocado
maki with tempura prawn and yam
and the kicker, a sushi pizza! Not on the menu, but my friends knew they could make them. Google it, looks funky but is amazing!
Overall some really delicious food, and the three of us left feeling full for $15 each (plus tip) when we split the bill three ways. Totally affordable, great food, and a lovely atmosphere inside. -

Great service and great food with a decent selection on the menu. They even served free green tea as soon as we sat down.
The sushi was very well prepared, fresh and tasty. It's not the best sushi I've ever had, but finally reasonable prices in Victoria!! Worth every penny!
What we ate:
1.) Assorted Sushi Nigiri - Tuna, salmon, and shark fin were awesome.
2.) Assorted and prawn tempura were OK, but a great deal.
3.) Dynamite, spicy tuna, and special rolls were great.
We are definitely going again when we are looking for a nice place with good food and fair prices. Go check it out and be the judge! -

I'm upping this to four stars. I've been back twice since my last review, and while the service still seems robotic, I'm accustomed to it, and the food has just gotten better. It's a good sushi bet in Victoria.

I like Shizen just fine. I don't find the service rude, just efficient and minimalist. Yes, I'd like… Read more »

Shizen is a two-minute walk from my apartment, making it the closest sushi restaurant to my lazy bones. And yet, I haven't been there in over a year. The food is moderately priced, uninspired, run-of-the-mill sushi, served to you with nary a smile or even eye contact on some nights. Shizen should count their blessings that they're on the Chinatown end of the tourist highway, or I'm sure they wouldn't be around for very long. I'd advise anyone looking for a quick bite of Japanese to go around the corner to Kaz on Store Street or walk up Johnson to Sockeye, where you'll get interesting fusion cuisine (though the service can be atrocious at times).

I really like the sushi here. The service isn't great but the food definitely makes up for it. The prices are good too.

Shizen Sushi is like a shitty sports team being carried by its one or two talented members (in this case, the sushi chefs). The sushi is probably some of the best if not THE best you can find on Vancouver Island. The pieces of nigiri and sashimi are the biggest I've had on the island, which is nothing compared to Vancouver, so if you can make the trip over to the mainland I highly advise that option instead. They have the best dynamite roll I've had anywhere though, and their highlander roll (not on the menu) with beef tataki & horseradish is amazing though costly ($10.95/roll?? For shame). Unless you're sitting at the sushi bar with the all stars working in front of you, don't expect to feel welcome.

CELIAC FRIENDLY! Really decent sushi for a great price... High ceilings and space between tables makes this a comfy spot that won't make your credit card cry. :)

I've been trying to find a new sushi place (after the demise of konpira and then tamami) so I checked out shizen takeout on a recommendation. Easy to find, nice interior, we were politely and promptly served.
The sushi looked fantastic and we were quite excited with high expectations. Got it all home and started munching away. The gyozas were average, the tempura was decent. I ordered some non traditional rolls and some more authentic ones. Don't bother with the non traditional ones at all, the teriyaki chicken and the spicy beef were both bland, boring and totally uninspired (I know those aren't dishes to judge a japanese restaurant on, but I thought I'd mention). We all found (group of 4 people) all the rolls to be somewhat bland and found a fairly high overuse of mayonnaise and cucumber, kind of disappointing. All in all, nothing was terrible, but everything was fairly mediocre (nobody had any exclamations of joy at any point during their meal), and everything seemed somewhat over-americanized (this could be due to their uber-tourist location at the entrance to china town). I don't mind departures from tradition, but at least do it well.
Shizen will not be making it into my regular rotation of restaurants. -

Absolutely worst service of my life! A friend and I sat upstairs where they have small tables and cushions, very Japanese like, and we were the only ones up there, so that aspect was nice; however, we were literally forgotten about. We ordered, 20 minutes later the food came and then after that we were just sitting up there confused for 40 minutes! Not an exaggeration at all! We actually had to physically stomp on the floor (what would be the roof for the servers below) in order to get their attention to ask for some water and for them to take our plates away. In total we sat up there for 1 hour and 50 minutes, it was absolutely ridiculous. The food wasn't bad though.

I sat at the sushi bar, and I have to say that the service was very good. The staff was pleaant and attentive. As for service, this was one of the better experiences that I've had in a long time. The food is fine overall, but not outstanding in any particular way. I think that for the price, the quality of the fish is what I would expect. The one thing that I thought detracted from the experience was that the atmosphere seemed a little dreary even though there was a lively set of customers--I think that it was the decor. I also had the opportunity to witness some customers complain--not necessarily a good sign, but the staff quickly took the food back to the sushi chef, he immediately remade their food and the customers seemed satisfied. If I heard it all correctly, they were complaining about not enough filling in their roll. My own orders were amply endowed.
