I am a little surprised to see that this store has been closed. I remember it always being packed around Halloween with people getting costumes or accessories for their costumes. I guess it could be possible that the rest of the year this store didn't get much business.
The only times I have ever gone here is around Halloween and they have pretty much all the types of costumes you could imagine and accessories to go with them. I was under the assumption that people would go here for theater costumes as well, or even dance costumes. That is one of the reasons I thought it must be busy year round.
The prices were always decent and comparable to other stores but I found the selection here to be the best. This store has left some big shoes to be filled. -

This is Edmonton's ultimate costume shop! If you need to find anything for Halloween or any other theme, you must check this place out!
An important note - especially with Halloween coming up - they also RENT costumes! They have some amazing options so if you're even thinking of it, I'd make your way there soon. If you really want to "WOW!" people but don't know where to start, check out their rentals for a guaranteed laugh.
This store specializes in costumes year-round. They have every kind of hat you could imagine on one wall. There's a makeup counter that far rivals that of any department store. (Of course, not many of us go to a department store makeup counter to add scars and such!) The makeup is theatrical grade stuff! The staff is very knowledgeable and can demystify the experience for you. They have sexy costumes, accessories. They have the biggest selection of wigs I've seen outside of a wig shop! Check out their tiaras, too. They have them in all different prices and extravagances!
They stick mostly to costumes, which is what makes them great, but at Halloween they also stock decorations. There are window stickies, yard signs, they really go all out. As you'd expect, Halloween is their busiest time of year.
Whether you're completely clueless or know exactly what you want, this is the place to go. If you're looking for that one perfect accessory to make your costume great or starting right from scratch, this place will inspire you. -

This review might be a little skewed as my adventure with Shirley Potter happened ON Halloween, when they were pretty much out of everything except wigs and eyeshadow.
Let my long walk to what's reputed to be the city's best costume shop serve as a lesson to any other procrastinators out there in future need of white face makeup for Halloween: buy it early. Even Shirley Potter won't be able to save you. In fact, they might not, as I discovered, even be willing to direct you to another location in the city where you might find white makeup, any white makeup, not just the professional stuff. Like, what, you're afraid of losing sales on something you don't HAVE? Help a girl out!
The one thing they did assist with was in selling me a bottle of solution that could be mixed with eyeshadows, turning them into liquid makeup. I used it with a cheap green eyeshadow I picked up at Shoppers, and with a black Urban Decay shadow I had kicking around, and it worked amazingly. In fact, I'll probably use this year-round.
For the record, after visiting 4 different stores I eventually found a single tube of white facepaint in the bottom of a box of devil tridents and scythes at Shoppers Drug Mart.
Judging by the size of Shirley Potter (and the rave reviews I've read) it's gotta be worth a visit - just don't make it ON Halloween. -

If you're looking for attire for Halloween, your next theme party or a theatrical performance, Shirley Potter's is synonymous with costumes. There is a wide selection to choose from and while there are typically lots of costumes to rent, the downtown store is getting out of the rental business, so as I write this, there's a big sale going on to clear out rental costumes. Whether you're looking for a adult-sized baby sleeper (for whatever reason?!) or a skimpy waitress outfit bearing the name Rhonda, they've got it. There's also lots of fun accessories like hats, wigs, lashes, fake noses, prosthetic breasts, and more. Adult dress up can be just as fun as when you were a kid.
