Review from Matthew P.
I've wandered up to Newfoundland several times, when I was out of a job in the US and just wanted to spend some time at "the end of the world". The Ship is one of the best live-music joints I've been to, and outstanding for such a small city. I've been there for ska shows, Celtic shows, open mics, etc. and been consistently thrilled with the quality of music, ambience, and general good cheer.
Decent selection of beer, live music almost every night of the week, great downtown location, etc. They also serve traditional NL fare during parts of the week, and I've had some good cod fritters there. I make a point to hit up The Ship repeatedly every time I visit, and it soundly beats any of the entertainment (i.e. some hack playing Oasis covers) some blocks away on George Street. -

A super-classic dive. Great dark grubby pubby ambience. Not a huge beer selection. Dead in the middle of the afternoon. You know. It was there. It is, as I say, classic. Not to miss if you're in St. John's but just because of the classicness.

St John's, NL
As a music venue, I'm not so crazy about this place. The few times I've been there to watch live shows, I've found the pretention in the air overwhelming. That being said, I've met some great people and have had a lot of fun on more than one night out.
But the pub converts into a restaurant in the daytime, featuring some great Newfoundland dishes. I was highly encouraged to check out the fish cakes, and they more than lived up to the rave reviews. Staff is always friendly and efficient as well. -

This place does showcase good live acts, but there is a whiff of artiste ennui in the air every now and then. This can be an issue if one of the "too cool for school" artistes has a problem with your average man off the street who isn't the least bit interested in the arts. The condescending attitude that ordinary Joes can encounter here is surprising for St. John's.
