Review from Melody M.
Went here for dinner after working out. The place was quite big and spacious but I was surprised because it was soooo quiet and there were only 3 customers. The staff was efficient but not super friendly.
The prices were reasonable, from $1.50 to $3.25 sushi pieces to $10-$12 tempura/ bento boxes. The cold noodles were on the mushy side and the tempura was just okay. The nigiri sushi was just average. I liked the tuna tataki, but they were on the small side and didn't look very fresh. -

*bleck...likely the worst sushi I have ever eaten....
The salmon sashimi tasted like an aquarium..and while I realize it's raw fish..good sashimi should not taste as such...
The rice on the rolls was dry and really disgusting..I am pretty sure it wasn't tuna in my spicy tuna roll...nor was the sauce on top spicy..it was sweet chili sauce..the tempura was ok...thankfully it would take a lot to screw up deep fried battered veggies..
In a city were sushi joints are a dime a dozen...skip Shin Ju and keep waling until you hit the next one...anything would be better... -

First off, I should say that my review is only based on the all-you-can-eat menu. I've never been to ShinJu for take out or anything else as it often looks deserted inside as was also the case this time.
A dollar more than its competitors' prices (Ninkazu, Fish on Rice, BC Sushi) Shin Ju's all you can eat menu looks pretty impressive and extensive on paper. In reality however, the quality is quite poor.
Nigiri-wise the slices of sashimi are paper thin, and not in that awesome good way that fresh places are, but in that cheap, chewy way. The salmon is the light pink colour of tuna and it is hard to tell the difference.
The agedashi tofu is a tough, super deep fried mini brick and rolls are loose, warm and too mayonaised. The edamame's pretty good, although really, how do you screw up edamame?
I will say this, the service was super fast. Granted, we were the only 2 people in the restaurant with the exception of the entire staff playing cards at another table. -

Just came back from an all-you-can-eat lunch at Shin Ju, a place I haven't visited before. I chose Shin Ju because it's close to home, I was craving Japanese food and I'm not a fan of Fish On Rice.
At $12 per person for a weekend lunch, Shin Ju has plenty of choices in the all-you-can-eat department. I should know. We tried them all.
The sushi was average. Not great but not horrible. The tuna and salmon tasted fresh, despite what you may be reading in other reviews here. Maybe it depends on the day.
The tempura seemed to be greasier than I'm accustomed to. The edamame was refrigerated and limp.
The seafood and oyster motoyaki was delicious and hot as were the gyoza and the ika karaage.
We packed away a lot of food on this trip and, indeed, ate all we could eat. Would I recommend it as a destination? No. It's not a place I would go out of my way to get to and if you're picky about the sushi you eat, you might wanna give this one a pass. If you're in the neighbourhood and are looking for some inexpensive Japanese food, however, you might to take advantage of the daily specials. -

I used to frequent this place, and it is a great go to. Serving up massive rolls, and being one of the only places that offers all you can eat and doesn't force each person in the dining party to order all you can eat this place is awesome.
For lunch time its always really busy, but if you phone in an order for pick up they will have it ready in no time! If you dine in service is always really fast and they have a good menu.
I also always enjoy when I order a yam tempura roll and it is so massive it requires two seperate bites to eat it and I am reduced to eating it with my hands. Impolite? Yes. Fabulous? Absolutely!Listed in: Where to Eat When You're…

My meal here left me very disappointed. We ordered a lot: spicy tuna roll, mexican roll, tempura udon, salmon sashimi, yaki onigiri (salmon) and oyster motoyaki. While things were inexpensive, the quality was definitely lacking. Everything lacked flavour. I did not like the rice in their rolls. They seemed really wet and sticky. The udon was tasteless. While the udon had a nice spring to it, there was no flavour at all from the broth. The tempura was decent. The sashimi was okay as well. The yaki onigiri didn't have much flavour aside from the salmon inside it. The oyster motoyaki was probably the biggest disappointment. I looked and smelled really good, but had virtually no flavour.
With so many other sushi options in the area, I wouldn't come here again. Everything was so void of flavour. -

This place is your average neighbourhood sushi place. Nothing here will blow your mind, but nothing I've tried is bad either. The lunch boxes are very well priced at $7.50 to $8.95. The servers are prompt but not cordial, which is fine with me. If your in the area and want a quick cheap lunch, definitely drop by.

It's so fast and easy to run in to their first-floor, corner location and order a sushi platter. They give me hot tea while I wait and I have never been able to finish a cup before my order is ready.
I get the value in their Sushi Platter Combo A ($27). I will grab this one for three people and it is a full meal. It has four pieces each of salmon, tuna and shrimp sushi. The pieces of fish are really big and always tender. You also get a California roll (6 pieces) and three small six-piece rolls of salmon, tuna and cucumber.
It's basic, entry-level sushi with none of the "crazy" stuff, which makes it a crowd pleaser with people who don't eat sushi often. I am not one of those people, I lived in Japan for a year and have no fear of putting anything raw into my mouth. But this is still a great, quick dinner. They deliver for free with a $15 minimum order within 5 km after 5:00 pm.
Shin Ju also does all-you-can-eat and it's a deal at $17.95. You can have unlimited sashimi and order over 50 menu items. But if you're not feeling adventurous, two people can share the Platter Combo A, which has so much on it it's pretty much all I could eat and $8.90 lower than two all-you-can-eat dinners. -

I have had me some good sushi over the years, and this was NOT one of those times. I walked in and placed an order for takeout, the service was slow and seemed to take a long time to get my order. I walked home and unpacked my sushi to my disappointment. I found the sushi to be warm, and the overwhelming smell of fish...... took one look, one wiff, and boom the whole thing was round binned. The only thing I ate from my order was the yam tempura....booooo.
