Review from Arun S.
This great sushi restaurant is almost like a hidden gem on wharf street. Although it is near other tourist-oriented restaurants, it just seems like a small place from the outside. However, once entering, you go down a set of stairs to a cozy, inviting room. Perfect for a nice, quiet dinner! There are some cool views of the harbor (for some of the dinners).
Staff was pleasant, but forgot to refill our water. They also forgot to bring our soups before sushi, and service was slow. However, bad service seems to the norm in Victoria (at least compared to Seattle).
We had a couple sushi rolls and sashimi. All of them were good with good, fresh fish. Not the best sushi I have had but very good prices (spicy tuna rolls for $6; rainbow roll for $16; 8 pieces of tuna and salmon sashimi for $9).
Overall, a nice sushi dinner. Service wasn't great, but we had a good time. -

Sushi and miso soup were delicious! Service was okay. Sushi came before miso soup and drinks... And they were ordered separately, sushi being last to be ordered. That was bizarre...
Also, there were so many flies hovering around the dining room... Flies were once maggots... -

We got takeout and our food wasn't ready on time, so they had to rush a few things, which might have impacted our experience.
The location and interior are really nice, worth visiting just for that alone. I found most of the rolls we had were just average. The yakitori was mediocre and overcooked, the chicken was a bit on the dry side. The gyoza had nice flavour and the veg was good but it was lacking texture and was pretty mushy. My scallop and shrimp skewer was again, not great, the shrimp was fine but the scallops were very overcooked and more fishy smelling than I'm used to for fresh scallops. The katsu don (breaded pork chop donburi) was quite good, flavourful and filling. Our mixed tempura was delicious and HUGE for what most other places offer. The server inside was very accommodating and offered for us to sit down for some free tea while we waited and when we said we were in very short term parking, she offered to bring the order out to us when it was ready, these little details really improved my overall assessment of the restaurant.
I'll have to stop in another time to give it a chance for the full dining experience with less time between cooking and eating, as well as not receiving any food that was rushed. -

At another sushi place, after being rudely told "NO!! Long Wait!!" , we headed for Shima. Boy are we glad that rude snag bounced us from the other joint. Shima's staff is very friendly and our server really made the night with her drink and food recommendations. The rolls are sizeable and wonderful!! One critique I had was that the spicy tuna roll was not spicy; when this was offered to the head hostess who came by to check on us, she said they make them less spicy for the base so as not to burn out all their spice-intolerant customers. She then offered to make a spicier version for us and recommended that we ask for it spicier next time.
Their martinis were very good and *very* reasonably priced, and the food was less $ than the other menus we looked at.
Please support them!! I want them to still be here next time I visit. -

Since discovering this place, I go about 2-3 times a week! It's the best sushi I have had in Victoria to date! They're pretty new, and the location is amazing. The servers are adorable, and the chef is awesome and super friendly. Sometimes they fall behind on refills, but overall I enjoy the service and they are always open to feedback. Try one of their specialty rolls, it's worth the money!
I highly recommend this place, and I hope it does well. -

We were visiting Victoria for a day and decided to try this restaurant. We ordered Fatty Toro, dragon roll, chicken and tempura bento box (for the kids), and spicy tuna roll. All the sushi were delicious and fresh (as one should expect). The kids (4 and 6) enjoyed their bento box. We were glad to have picked this place. The service was also good and the staff was attentive to the kids needs. The price was also reasonable. Definitely recommend. I would have given it a 5 star, however I have definitely had better sushi (however it was also 5x as expensive).
