I just started the first (of four) beginner's sewing classes. I appreciate that Sheila's studio is clean and organized. Even though it's on the basement floor of the building, you don't feel like you are because the industrial room has tall ceilings with light that comes through from the street level. There's a kitchen area, a design library for your to leaf through, pieces that are being worked on hanging neatly on clothing racks, music playing, art on the wall (available for purchase, not just viewing)...many amenities and cool stuff to keep you entertained and inspried.
Sheila is a detailed instructor and very passionate about sharing her knowledge with her students (class size of 5). I dropped out of a beginner's sewing class a few years ago because there were 12 people in the class and no step by step instruction...I was left behind on the very first day and I doubt my instructor even noticed. I feared the worse, but glad that I worked up my courage to sign for Sheila's class. By the end of the class, we should be able to comfortably work on two different type of sewing machines, make a reversable apron, the basics of hand sewing by making a flower accessory and sewing a canvas side bag. It's even more awesome that we all received a starter kit (that was sewn) with useful sewing tools!!!
If you're a klutz like me and feel unsure that you just may not get it...don't feear--SWFDS is definitely the place for you! And if you're not a newbie like I am, this is a great place to come work on your sewing (by the hour) if you don't have a machine at home. Check back for special workshops each month!
