Review from Justin L.
We were invited the other night to a lovely dinner at Shaughnessy Restaurant, which was warmly decorated for the holiday season. Maybe it was the chilly air outside or the throngs of people visiting VanDusen Gardens for the annual Christmas Light Show, but the large space was bustling with energy, goodwill, and a palpable sense of old-fashioned family tradition. Or maybe it was just that I went with a fabulous group of friends and colleagues. And this was the perfect place for a happy occasion for a group with an age range of 18 to 60+.
For my entrée, the ORGANIC STEELHEAD AND SEARED QUALICUM BAY SCALLOP ($27) was flavorful, tender, and satisfying. The sizeable filet was fresh and melted in my mouth, as was the stellar local scallop, in this case a giant one sliced horizontally into three segments. There was just enough beurre blanc to go with the seafood, though I felt the portion of lemon spatzle could have been far more generous (it's just dough, after all!) and finished with more browning in the pan.
Others at my table ordered the BLACK ANGUS NEW YORK STRIP LOIN ($28), which was nicely seared and tender, with a tasty bed of mushrooms. What really stood out, however, were the parmesan pommes frites -- a large cup of them -- drizzled with black truffle oil that perfumed the vicinity.
Service was friendly, knowledgeable and attentive, though my water was rarely refilled. The complimentary slices of baguette would've been nicer warmed up. For dessert, I went with the server's suggestion of LEMON TART ($9), the curd of which had a nice balance of sweet and sour. The fresh strawberry slices were ripe and sweet, but the shortbread crust was a bit soggy and bland.
Overall, Shaughnessy's dinner prices are reasonable for the quality, quantity, and ambience. It's neither trendy nor pretentious -- just solid, well-executed food. -

2 stars for the beautiful lobby area.
Not the worst meal I've ever had, but close. Very disappointed today. Came here for Mother's Day Brunch. Definitely not expensive at all, but you get what you pay for.
Mimosa = okay
Waffle = no where even remotely close to Medina's. A little soggy.
Shortribs = cut into little pieces for me with an egg on top. Had better.
Service was okay, but definitely not stellar. My dad wanted a coffee after our meal, but it was getting close to 11:15 now, so the restaurant was getting busier, and our server just brought us the bill without us asking. Guess it's time to call it a day and go. Best to cut our losses and cut bait.
Wouldn't come back again. -

Expensive doesn't mean good.
This place is expensive, but food is worse than White Spot or Denny's, which are mediocre, cheap restaurants. That's how bad it is.
I've been to this place many times, each time hoping that the food would be better and being expectedly disappointed. Somehow, one of my family members really recommends this place.
One time, I ordered a $27 lamb dinner that was overcooked with disgusting sauce. The portion size was okay, but I didn't want to finish it. The last time I went, I got a decent cannelloni that was burnt and overly rich. The salad that came with it was un-sauced and tasted like grass. The chicken was dry and overcooked. If I wanted to eat crap, I could go to the toilet for free.
You would think that this expensive of a restaurant would serve better food. Don't try to justify it by saying that my palate isn't sophisticated enough for this fare. I almost always finish my food and enjoy it somewhat...except here. Bad is bad.
At least the service is usually good. The atmosphere is decent, with a good, bright view of Van Dusen Gardens.
I would recommend another restaurant. -

After enjoying a stroll through the 55 acres of the VanDusen gardens take a bit of refreshment here, you'll be glad you did.
Try the Crispy Black Pepper Calamari with cucumber, garlic & dill yogurt sauce, yum!! And the seafood chowder is not to be missed.
Fine views and fine eats, it's a treat!Listed in: Our Vancouver/Victoria BC must…

I came here for Mother's Day brunch and brought the whole family. I thought it would be suitable because I knew that Van Duscen Gardens is a place where several seniors go to and they had wheel chairs available so that Grandma could later enjoy the park without exerting too much energy. One odd thing was that they had gotten our order wrong and didn't offer any apology and was rather curt. Being that it was one of the first interactions it created an unsavory tone for the meal. My chicken crepe was cold and which caused the sauce to be rather runny. However, everyone was pleased with their meals. The portions are very generous and Van Duscen Gardens is one of my favourite spots in Vancouver so the view is gorgeous.
However the service could use a bit of improvement. I would work on the tactfulness in approaching a situation such as a wrong order. A small gesture such as a quick apology would have been appreciated rather than an awkward pause and then to say "well, fine, we can get an extra cup for you when you're done". I understand that it was one of their busiest times in the season - but first impressions are hard to change.
I have returned to the restaurant a second time for a snack after visiting the garden and the service was far better and the food was just fine. If you're looking for a restaurant in the park, I'd rather go to Seasons in the Park set in Queen Elizabeth Park or The Tea House in Stanley Park. -

Shaughnessy Restaurant may just have the best patio in Vancouver, butting up against the fountained topiary section of VanDusen Gardens, the atmosphere can't be beat.
We were just here for patio drinks after wandering through the gardens, but I would start coming here often if I weren't leaving town! I barely glimpsed the food menu, but it seems to be in the typical Vancouver Oceanwise style.
One star off for the cost of bottled beer ($5.50, they were out of draft). The selection of wines by the glass was small but well chosen. -

Good food, but often crowded. Space is cramped enough to make me pity the waitstaff trying to squeeze past diners. Still, it's the best place to eat in the neighbourhood, and it has decent vegetarian options.

There is no better place to sit and have a spot of tea than on this lovely patio on a hot Summer day.
I came here for dunch on a weekend with some friends and I had a Back Bacon Benny, which actually consisted of Canadian bacon (which isn't real bacon!) but was surprisingly good nonetheless. The benny came with hashbrowns that I was ready to drown in ketchup, but when I asked the waitress for this delicious condiment, she told me they didn't have ketchup. Wtf? How can you run a restaurant that serves hashb's and not provide the sauce? This is blasphemy! Sensing my disapproval, the waitress headed to the kitchen to see if there was something that she could give me as a substitute. She quickly returned with a small metal container with a salsa-looking substance. I tested it out with a hashbrown, and it was really not my favourite topping, but thanked her for trying.
The service was good, and the smell of the fresh roses that were blossoming was amazing, so if you have the chance to spend a lazy summer day soaking up the scents, I strongly recommend it, just remember to stop in at a McDonalds first and grab some ketchup packets to go! -

5 stars. The best place to have a family brunch. Where better than overlooking the most beautiful gardens in all of Vancouver.
Food is good and service is always as good as can be.
I've never had a bad time or a bad dish here. -

What a huge disappointment!!!
We went for dinner and couldn't have been more disappointed. I've had better food at Denny's or another family-style restaurant. The atmosphere is nice, but the service was also disappointing. Perhaps it is a place popular with seniors because the food is reminiscent of what you might find in a seniors home. We wanted to love the place, but it was horrible.
