Review from Crystal W.
Calgary, AB
This is a venue for a super casual, carefree evening with great live music. The bar clearly has not been renovated because it looks like an old, small town watering hole and you catch the occasional whiff of cigarette smoke even though no one is smoking. If you're from a small town like myself, you'll probably feel like you're at home in about two seconds. Drinks were cheap but they have a $10 cover charge on Fri and Sat. I had no problem paying this because the band was worth it and the service was good.
There's no need to dress up for this outing because you have no one to impress. You'll also want to dance comfortably and not brush your nice clothes or shoes against anything in what I'd consider a less than stellar restroom.
People of all walks of life are there to have a good time and chill, so don't judge and you'll be fine. I enjoyed myself here and wouldn't hesitate to go back. -

On 11th Avenue SE in Calgary's east side sits the Shamrock Hotel. And it is certainly showing its maturity; without its citywide reputation for great music, it would be difficult to attract a crowd. This venue is one of Calgary's premier live music destinations for local and international bands. And although Calgary is now completely smoke-free, this place still smells like grandma's ashtray. Music genres pumped from the PA system here include Top 40, funk, R&B, blues and classic rock. The Shamrock has been around since 1914 and will remain a landmark in the city for years to come.
Rooms are relatively inexpensive and the venue provides close access to Calgary's bustling downtown core. The food here is mediocre at best. -

The Shamrock does feature good live music, but there's nothing else to which you can walk from there and the clientele can be dodgy. I'd only go to the Shammie in the company of friends.
