The vegetarian samosas are AMAZING here.

I didn't eat or try anything else and it's all I go for.

I've walked by here many times and finally stopped in when my friend owed me lunch.  Not knowing what to expect from the food here I ordered a butter chicken dish because well I wasn't sure what I wanted and this is usually a safe bet.

Boy was I ever wrong.  The butter chicken dish was watery and not creamy.  Lacked flavour and was warm.  I don't think I'd ever come back here and it's made me think twice about heading to the non express version of this restaurant.  Save yourself the money and skip this place unless you're REALLY hard up for Indian food and don't want to walk a block and a half.

I wanted to like it so much! I was grabbing some food for a park picnic and indian wraps sounded like an amazing alternative to the typical sandwich and picnic fare.

I ordered the chicken tikka wrap. It sounded genius to me. Succulent chicken tikka wrapped in a warm naan bread with veggies. Not really the case. The chicken was cold, not that flavourful and dry. Naan bread was standard, but also cold. The veggies were a few slices of those pale tomato types and shredded ice berg lettuse, neither tasting that fresh. And on top of everything was this thousand island dressing-esque sauce that leaked out the bottom.

On the side, I got an onion baji that was not heated up in any way. It was especially oily and looked like a falafel ball.

I'm sure they have some other ok stuff too; their plates look pretty good and it seems like a cool place to eat in. But no, sadly, coming here was not a good call.

Shafali is a good option if you're in the Market Hall and don't want to explore many of the restaurants outside these walls. However, I'd highly recommend making the 5 minute walk to the Shafali restaurant on Dalhousie instead of shelling out approximately the same cash for a heat lamped food court meal and mediocre atmosphere.

I've always had a great dining experience at Shafali on Dalhousie, but I often have a lackluster and bland meal if I got to the Market Place location. But if beggars can't be choosers, some perks to this place include prompt service, a polite staff and many vegetarian options. You can also often choose a seat by the window (winter)/patio (summer) if you don't come during lunch hour.

If you like Indian food and need something to-go you've just hit the jackpot!  FINALLY, an alternative to sub sandwiches and fast food!!

This place is located in the Market Hall building of the Byward Market area and is an off shoot of the Shafali restaurant on Dalhousie.

Like the rest of the food places in the building, it's tiny with just a few tables and a food prep/counter area.  The menu offers the Indian mainstays that you would expect, all of which you can get to go but the piece de resistance has got to be the Tikka wrap!  All of the deliciousness of chicken tikka masala wrapped in naan bread- totally brilliant!!!!

Not a place you'd go for the atmosphere but the food is good, the bread is prepared on-site and the ladies in the kitchen run the place like a well-oiled machine.

The first thing I noticed about Shafali was the wonderful aroma of Indian spices! Mmmmmm.... Shafali Bazaar is half restaurant and half Indian spice market. Like many of the boutiques in the Byward Market, space is at a premium. There is a tiny eat-in area (which was packed when I was there one Sunday afternoon - a great sign) all surrounded by shelves containing exotic, sub-continent spices (cardamon, saffron, etc.), and packaged goods like pappadum bread. Like many shops in the market, the portions were not as generous as I wished and the prices were aimed at tourists. But, the food was authentic as it was delish (mmm...fresh, home-made samosas!!!).
