Went for AYCE hot pot. Quality of meat was pretty low, and the price was fairly high around 20 dollars.

Worst Xi'an restaurant I ever had! I will never ever come back again. I ordered The eggplant. It was so sweet, all I can taste of was sugar. The kou shui chicken, when they served it, it already looked like a left over. I don't normally say the *taste* of a restaurant is really really bad. But this one has definitely a bad taste.
Not to mention the service sucks. Only one waiter in the whole restaurant so he forced ppl to sit closer to him instead of where they want to sit. When I pay, I forgot to use my coupon, he refused to take it afterwards and say we have to come back. I'm not gonna do that!!!!
Please don't say you are a Xi'an restaurant since you are definitely not eligible to be one. Just a shame for xi'an!!! Ppl shouldn't come!!! The other shaanxi restaurant in Scarborough is much better!!! -

Shaanxi Restaurant took over the space of Ting's Shabu Shabu (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) which was a hot pot restaurant.
Shaanxi Restaurant is really a Northwestern Chinese Cuisine Restaurant with influence of Sichuan. Though the menu only has 50% of the selection being spicy, so it is really safe to take your non spicy eating friends to dine here.
Special Hand Made Noodle ($4.99)
- The waitress asked if I want it non spicy?? why.. if there is a chili next to it on the menu and I ordering that... puzzle....
- Really simple thick, wide and chewy noodle with great texture.. though the portion looked small but was quite filling
- The spiciness is more of a sour and spicy... which is the characteristic of Shaanxi cuisine..instead of Sichuan peppercorn style
The waitresses here were both really really friendly! Big smile, talk to all patrons in Mandarin with their sweet voices... I got a chance to practice mine too, trying to explain why someone like me from Southern China can eat spicy food...
Shaanxi Restaurant still serves Hot Pot. For Lunch Specials (11:30 to 3)is AYCE for $8.99.. they have the veggie and some of the items in the fridge in self served style. Or you can order their hot pot set (11:30 - 5) for $6.99. For AYCE dinner the price will be for $14.99.
I guess I need to come back and try their hot pot soon....Listed in: Lunch Specials in Richmond…, Northern Chinese Cuisine…

Shaanxi is nice looking restaurant at Commerce Gate in Richmond Hill. Unfortunately, they lack in service and the food is not too good. What's more, the price is too high. I came here for lunch with some coworkers.
*** FOOD ***
I ordered the Chicken in Chili Pot and bowl of Steamed Rice.
* Chicken in Chili Pot | $8.99 *
This dish was quite bland with the exception of the chilis. It consists of small bony pieces of chicken, loads of bean sprouts and onions and a few small pieces of red and green pepper. There are some dried chilis thrown in that add a much needed kick of heat and sourness. The sauce is like a soup, a little salty and thin. The boniness of the meat makes it a task to eat. The portion size is large, but it's bland and hard to eat.
* Steamed Rice | $1.20 *
A small bowl of steamed rice had to be ordered separately. It's just typical bland steamed rice.
*** SERVICE ***
Service was okay. Upon entering, no one directed us to seat ourselves or wait for service. We waited about a minute, until we were helped. There was a young woman and an older woman both serving us. The younger server wasn't very attentive and didn't really seem to care. She didn't look happy to be doing her job. The older woman was friendly and very attentive. She seemed very happy. The food didn't take long to come after ordering.
*** ATMOSPHERE ***
The restaurant looks nice and is pretty clean. The floors are carpeted and the ceiling has an interesting faux stone look. There is an area toward the back where vegetables are kept cold for people ordering hot pot. They play Asian music in the background. The tables are located around the perimeter of the restaurant, but in the middle is a long round bench seating area, almost like teppanyaki but without the big grill. The restaurant gets quite a few patrons and most order the hot pot, so maybe that's what they do best.
*** PRICE ***
Too expensive. The price doesn't justify the mediocre service or bland food.
* Chicken in Chili Pot | $8.99 *
* Steamed Rice | $1.20 *
*** CONCLUSION ***
Shaanxi is a nice looking restaurant, but lacks service. The food, while it comes in a good sized portion, is bland and difficult to eat. The price is too high for this type of food and this level of service. I'm tempted to go back for the hot pot, but after this episode, I'm reluctant. I've been to much better Asian restaurants than Shaanxi.Listed in: I got Yellow Fever
