Review from Edward L.
Came here for some speedboating action.
Parking was decent, and the place was very easy to find.
The staff were very friendly and efficient. They answered all our questions. My only suggestion is that they may want to go over the safety bit a bit more clearly, or possibly inside a quiet room instead of on the dock, because half my friends didn't even pay attention, which did make me a bit edgy in case something did happen on our trip.
The boat itself was pretty decent, but a bit slow at only 60hp This was noticeable when you went full throttle in the ocean. The PFDs were clean and didn't smell like seawater or rotting flotsam.
Overall one of the better places to hit up for boating fun, though Granville Island is also quite decent. This one is farther out of the way, but you can hit up the nearby islands and other good stuff. Recommended. -

Few things surpass the freedom of a fast boat, calm water and warm weather. If you are not fortunate enough to own a boat, then renting is always viable. In my city the hot spot for boat rentals is Sewells Marina in Horseshoe Bay. I myself have a boat in the bay and so have never needed to rent from them.
I do know those who have used this service and were quite pleased. The price is fair, for about $50/h, with discounts applied in increments of 4 or 8 hours. Boats come in the fairly standard motor boat size of 15f or 17f. Fishing charters and guided tours of the Sound are also available. Now, I concede that the business drawn by Sewells is a huge factor in preserving picturesque Howe Sound. As much as I personally find the boat traffic created by the marina aggravating, I realize its importance.
So, if you are going to rent a boat and enjoy the splendor of my waters, then there are a few things I want you to know. First off, learn the rules of the water. If a boat is coming from your right side then they have the RIGHT of way. It's not complicated. Decelerate and let them go first. I guarantee my boat is faster than anything you can rent, don't try and race, it's embarrassing. And not for me. Do not cut in front of ferries, this is common sense. Do not trail in the wake of ferries. This too is common sense. Never go between a tugboat and its load, it follows that there is a rope between the two. If you're lucky you'll only tear the engine prop off the boat, if you're unlucky much worse can happen.
Now for the most important rule of all. And people, I can not stress this enough. Never, and I mean never, utter that annoying WOOOOOO sound when going over a wave. Even if you think it's the most exhilarating thing you've experienced, which in of itself is sad, sound travels over water. You're not just annoying the people in your boat, you're annoying me on my front porch. Please people, some compassion for my leisure time. -

The Sewells Sea Safari is a great way to explore the bay if you don't own a boat and don't want to hire one. The operators and friendly and run a good tour that shows you everything from the waterside mansions of West Van to lazing seals to nesting birds. It feel great to be out on the water with the hum of the outboard and the sea spray in your face and it is all just around the corner.
