I think this has to be my favourite bakery in all of Vancouver. It's small, it's not fancy, it's Greek, and it's amazing. I used to come here almost every day when I lived in Kits. They carry every Greek dessert you've ever heard of, plus a ton more you've never heard of. My favourite though, is their rainbow colored selection of meringues! They're light, crisp, sweet and pure heaven.

    * Who said you can't eat lunch out of a bakery?!?!?!! *

    Perfect lunch option #1:

    1)  Spanikopita fresh out of the oven with the wonderful mixture of spinach and cheese in the delicious crunchy flaky phyllo.

    2)  Galaktoboureko with its delicious custard, crunchy phyllo, and sweet honey drizel.

    Perfect lunch option #2:

    1)  See #1 above

    2)  Greek twisted butter cookie.  This less sweet than you would expect cookie is quite addictive.  It goes really well with a hot drink to wrap up your meal (like perhaps a Yoka's coffee or tea from next door?!?!?!)

While there isn't so much Greek left in the "Greek part" of town, this little bakery is one of the pleasant reminders of the neighbourhood's history.

    AMAZING!

The best desserts at Serano that I can't get enough of include:

1.) Kok (pronounced like Coke) - looks like a donut that has been cut open and filled with a custard cream filling and dipped in chocolate.

2.) Korne - a cream filled tubular puff pastry shell filled with a custard whipped cream filling.

3.) Mille Feille - better than any french version I've had in my life.  It must be the Greek baking touch.

If you haven't tried Serano, you've been missing out on some serious desserts!

Baklava cravings hit me once in a while. Those light crispy layers of phyllo, soaked in honey, with bits of crunchy pistachio in between. It's always a special treat.

First discovered this cute bakery while shopping near the area two summers ago. The colorful meringues in the window lured me in. Inside, they had many other treats-butter cookies, bread, baklava, galaktoboureko, kataifi (shredded phyllo dough with honey and nuts), rizogalo (Greek rice pudding),bugatsa, almond, vanilla, anise seed biscotti, lots and lots of sweet treats. They have all different colors and flavours of meringues-lemon, lime, strawberry, raspberry, lime...
I usually pick up a baklava or two, along with some cookies, bring it home, and savour it with Chai tea.

I love this cute bakery, for its selection, and of course, fresh baklava!!

    Sugar rush!

Did I really buy a meringue cookie? I hadn't had one of those in decades...Honestly, I can't believe I ate the whole thing! It was the size of my hand! But there I was skipping along Broadway and thinking, "Sweet, sweet, I need me some sweets!" Got a bit more than I could chew, but how can you help not eating the whole food-dyed-pink cookie with crumbs crumbling all around?

I think the childhood memory of this cookie tasted better than this. But the texture and the melting sensation were all in tact so score! There wasn't a huge amount to choose from, but to be fair, I did go in the late afternoon...I'd suggest to anyone else in the neighbourhood to definitely make this a morning visit!

Oh, Serano: you and your window display of hot and delicious spanikopita lure me like a fish on a reel. Warm, flaky, buttery pastry; cheesy filling; and spinach to give it all a 'healthy' stamp. For just $3 you can partake in these perfect pastries. I recently made the mistake of eating a spinach pie at Safeway: nuked to a state of microwave burn and tasteless. My dear Serano, I'll never do that again.

I spend quite a bit of time at the Kitsilano library, or the Broadway Blenz and Serano is on my walking route there. Every time I walk past I have to talk myself out of purchasing a spinach pie--because they're just sitting there waiting for me.

The only negative (and I think it was here I had them) are the flavored meringues. Overly sweet and as fake-tasting as the color, I don't recommend them for kids or anyone else. Even my boyfriend, who prides himself on eating my leftovers, wouldn't touch the highlighter-color lemon specimen I bought, bit, and didn't like.

Sounds like just one more reason to stick with the pastries.

Up and down West Broadway there's about a million really great Greek Bakeries so it's pretty hard to choose a favorite but Serano is mine.
I'll admit it, I'm intimidated by large amounts of old Greek men hanging out and judging me and Serano isn't one of those bakeries with little tables for old people to just hang out all day sitting at. Serano manages to be a nice ethnic bakery with good food that's not a day trip so people like me who don't want to shake hands and say how their family is can still enjoy some baklava.
If you haven't found a good Greek bakery and just want the baked good and no guff I'd suggest Serano.

Definitely the best spinach pies around. So warm and fresh everytime I go in there. I haven't tried any of their other pastries, but it's worth a visit just for the spanikopita.
