This place is a lifesaver when you remember you agreed to bring a dessert somewhere ... half an hour before the event takes place.

Yes, I am that person, and Serano makes me have no shame about this. Even on Easter Sunday you can waltz into this place to get a show-stopping and affordable cake. Not to mention all the other goodies they have to offer.

The people who work here are just awesome. I'm not sure if it is family run (I would assume so) but they are always so warm and friendly, even on the busiest of days.

This place gets so busy sometimes it is almost scary (on holidays), but they still always get your order right and deliver quality baked goods.

Serano Bakery is a short walk north of Pape station on the west side. One of my Greek friends told me to go here in search of loukoumades.

There is much more to it here than an actual bakery. The right hand shop is a bakery but to the left there is a whole small room full of direct food imports from Greece. Canned foods (gigantes, dolmades, other Greek treats), Greek coffee, beans. There is also a deli counter with a huge selection of Greek cheeses and olives. Huge selection of Greek olive oils, you can buy the jumbo sized canisters too.

Hell, you can even buy prayer beads if you want.

The prices here are amazing. WAY cheaper than any of the places directly on the Danforth for identical products. A small can of dolmades (grape leaves stuffed with rice) was $2.59 here as opposed to $3.99 at most other places.

The actual bakery is beautifully organized. Lots of foil-wrapped chocolates, mini baklavas, Greek cookies and pastries. Lots of typical Greek sesame bread.

    Service was very friendly.

A block and a half away from the Mortimer campus of Centennial College and a 5 minute walk north of Pape station is one of my favourite bakeries. I'm in the hood, and these guys have been whipping up pastries and desserts (not just of the greek variety)for over 20 years. Gat Damn.

    VIBE
For such an unassuming bakery, this place can get packed quick. I love hearing people blabbering off Greek and at Greek Easter in April, it is the place where candles and egg bread went to die. So if you want to get some, come early because they sell quickly. The ladies here are lovely though.  They bring the sweet smells of bread to my neighbourhood early in the morning (and sometimes, I hate them for it!).

    I EAT
These guys are the suppliers of baklava for many of the Greek restaurants on the Danforth. If you want it half price, this is your baklava crack den. There are so many varieties. I am a HUGE fan of their chocolate mousse, their spanokopita and their tyropita (spinach and cheese pies) - but Athens does do it better. Serano's version, however is half the price. Their bougasta (cream filled pie in a phyllo pastry) is delicious and has just the right amount of cinnamon sprinkled.  And they also have authentic hazelnut chocolate.

There is also a deli section and these guys know their feta cheese . There are many varieties here. It's also the source of Krinos related products (you know those guys that sponsor Taste of the Danforth? Yeah, them) and kalamata olives. Kalamata olives...mmmmm.

    OBLGATORY CATCHY REMARK
Get yourself a SER-RATED knife because there's going to be a lot of bread cutting happening! Truly, a local and a staple of the Greek neighbourhood.

Hands down, the best Greek bakery in the city.

Must haves: Almond cookies (amygdalota). Chocolate-covered baklava. Kok - plain or with sprinkles. Sweet breads: Vasilopita for New Years; Tsoureki for Easter/Pascha. Galaktoboureko (custard 'cake' in phyllo, drizzled with syrup) - buy the whole pan, not just a few pieces. Trust me.

The little shop next to the bakery is also stocked with lots of items straight from Greece, with the odd Greek-Canadian "Mr. Goudas" item thrown in for good measure. The frozen spanakopita is perfect for those last minute guests - just throw it in the oven and they'll think you've got a village grandma  baking away in the kitchen. I like to buy the dark red powdered-dye for making traditional Greek Easter eggs. The Nescafe Classic for making frappe (Greek iced coffee) is overpriced, but cheaper than having to fly to Greece to get it at a normal price (some people claim it's the same as Taster's Choice sold in our Canadian supermarkets; I beg to differ).

I love this place! This place is split into two sections: the grocery section, and the bakery section.

The grocery section has a variety of fresh cheese, olives, honey, Greek olive oil, coffee (they sell my favourite Greek coffees), ouzo candies, spices, halva, religious items etc.

The bakery section sells beautiful and tasty cakes, baklava, bread, different kinds of cookies, pies, and everything else you can dream of. The variety is great!   If the people working there know that you're buying sweets as a gift, they will package the goodies in a special box and tie a pretty ribbon around it, free of charge.

The people working there are very friendly and helpful. The prices are great and everything is fresh and made wonderfully. I also love how the products are well organized, clean and tidy.

This place is a wonderland especially for those who have a sweet tooth!

The most delicious bread in the city is made in this bakery. From their most basic $1.50 crusty loaves to their fancy-shmancy $8.00 sweet breads (trust me, it is SO worth the splurge), I haven't met a bread product from this place that I didn't love.

I unfortunately haven't tried many of their offerings, but have once or twice tried their small, individual-sized cakes which are also always delicious.

The smell in the parking lot beckoned me like the cries of a siren. Like a siren made of sugar, which usually doesn't get my attention. I followed my nose into a pretty cool little bakery/fine foods merchant, unsurprisingly specializing in products imported from Greece. The two are side-by side, linked by a doorway, but feel like their own separate entities.

The food store carries lots of exotic treasures, spices that I have never seen or heard of, and a freezer full of phyllo dough that I almost bought to make my own spanikopita, until I remembered that I don't do that.
They even had Greek gum, bearing the brandname "lifedrops"! The title and accompanying visual being so cool I had to buy it, with no real plans for chewing it.

The bakery was pretty big and pretty busy. The staff was pleasantly surly (in contrast to the food store where the clerk was simply very pleasant), and I bought my usual suspects: half-moon shortbread almond cookies called "kourambiethes" in Greek, as well as cheese pie, known as "tiropita". Both being two of my favourite foods on earth. True story. The cookies were good, but a little on the dry side- didn't taste as homemade as I was expecting. The tropita was pretty excellent, with one of the best fillings I've had, store-bought.

Serano is my go to bakery when I don't feel like baking and need something yummy! Their cakes are delicious and the assortment of mini pastries are amazing. I've only been on the bakery side (which is often quite busy) - but one day I should venture through the doorway into the fine foods area.

Prices are totally reasonable and the baked goods are always divine!
