What a great place to get sushi.

I accidentally stumbled upon this place a few months back when the friends I was with were getting their hair cut next door and I needed lunch.  I have to be honest: the blacked out windows and fact that this place is in a plaza turned me off initially.

But concern diminished upon entering: the place is spotless, sparkling clean. I ordered the the Grossmont roll....delicious.! Sei is the first sushi place I've been to that puts the stringy, crab-salady crab in their rolls instead of solid hunks of imitation crab.  And jalapeños in a sushi roll?! Instant love.  I've eaten here a ton of times since that day, and it never disappoints.  I have never had a sit-down meal here because I live so close, so it's always take out.  I don't know if I'd consider it ideal for a date-date, but if you're out and about with your long-term parter or spouse and don't need to impress, it would be fine.  Its just small and, like I said before, in a plaza.

WTF..This place has no right being called a sushi bar.

First off you cant see them making anything.

Then theres the loud and annoying Japanese pop/techno videos that are played way too loud. And Im a dj.

Then theres a selection of about 8 different "rolls" that are lackluster in appearance and taste. AND theyre pricey

2 regular style rolls, a Sapporo and a ice tea shouldnt have been $30

Service was ok but the waitress decided it was more fun to hang out w her boyfriend and his beer drinking friends

I wont come back here. I'd rather drive to Domo in Santee or Toro on Mission Gorge than go here again. Not even if it was free.

Sorry guys but you need to see where the sushi is coming from.

2 stars for being clean and having somewhat decent service

Sei Sushi is one of the better sushi spots in La Mesa. The prices are pretty reasonable overall, the dinner specials are a steal, and the menu has a lot of selections to choose from. However, the food preparation consistency wavers (i.e. sometimes its great and at other times its just ok).

Service is friendly but a tad slow during late night hours. Also, please be forewarned that K-pop music videos are on constant rotation here - but I just think it adds to the fun little atmosphere in an otherwise boring strip mall.

Never again.  Tuna roll LITERALLY had to be Starkist tuna from a can + mayo mixture, then wrapped in rice.  It even tasted exactly like a tuna sandwich.  I was SHOCKED, thought I was having a bad dream.  The chicken Teriyaki was cold Teriyaki sauce poured on top of frozen, pan fried chicken.  Oh, and way over-priced.  What a disappointment.

Well....BEER ON TAP AND DELICIOUS SUSHI!!!! Sei Sushi is a fantastic new restaurant in San Carlos, close to Grossmont College. I have eaten there twice now in the past 4 days, and I plan on going back often. The owner Song and all of his staff are very nice and friendly. If you are dining in, there is Lunch and Diner Specials that are packed with food and super easy on your wallet. The Rolls, Nigiri, Soup and Beer were all fresh and served in a timely manner. I recommend Sei Sushi for anyone in the neighborhood to drop on by, and give it a try!!!

    Top Picks/Recommendations:

3pc Nigiri Sampler (Lunch Dine In Special)
    Dragon Roll
    Crunch Roll

Been here 3 times now with the family.  Kids are relatively young and they LOVE the music videos, and sushi.  The service is always great and staff is very friendly.  Quality very good.  It's not what you would expect for the area, but probably the best sushi you'll find short of heading over the Convoy Street, or down to PB for Sushi Ota. (True "5")

You have to disregard the only really bad review here by "Lisa N".  Her measurement metric must be a bit skewed if she rates Subway a "5".

Sei Sushi is a hidden gem in East County.

Finally a decent sushi place in East County with decent ambiance.

Don't get me wrong - I like Banbu. But it's overpriced for what it is. Sei has a modern atmosphere. The dinner special is $16 and you get quite a bit - the presentation is gorgeous and it's actually pretty good! But get there early... it fills up fast!

Another night at Sei Sushi! It took me a minute to get back yelp and finish this review but, during our dinner I wrote a few notes to remind me of the encounter(because 99 cent pints will take its toll) here are the notes:

    -Hot as Hell
    -Loud mouthed SKANK

I'm not even going to talk about the food this time, because the food is always amazing. You will not be disappointed with whatever you get. I'll just talk about the reminders I wrote to myself.
After taking our seats and ordering our drinks, I start to sweat. Having went to the gym earlier that day, I knew it couldn't have been residule heat from my workout. We get our drinks(99cent Bud lights!), I chugged mine down, still sweating fairly well. We order our food and another drink, and our waitress brings me another pint. Again, I chug it down, now starting to feel a bit self conscious because I'm sweating so badly. Then, out comes our food. Still sweating my ass off, I notice a girl at the bar screaming at the top of her lungs about something that obviously nobody gives two shits about. At least I didn't! Already dealing with my uncomfortable sweating situation, I now have to listen to this screaming Banshee fight for the attention of the bartender because her nerdy boyfriend won't get off his crakberry long enough to entertain her so I can enjoy my meal. Half way through my sesame chicken(AMAZING!!) I down what is left of my beer, throw the money on the table to cover the check, and tell my roommate that we're leaving because if one more bead of sweat runs down the crack of my ass or I hear the screaming banshee at the bar say one more word, I'm either going to turn into stone or kill everyone in the place!!!  I find out later the next day that I had Strep throat and that was the reason for the sweating.. Now, the reason for the Loud mouthed SKANK..... only thin I can figure is that Plan B hadn't been discovered yet or her parents were hard core catholics!! Later Days

You  know how sometimes you see a restaurant near you being built and you're really excited and hopeful that it's good, then it isn't?

    That wasn't the case here.

This place is within walking distance of my house, but I was worried it wouldn't be good, simply because that would be too good to be true.

The food was extremely fresh and service super fast. Extra points for creative and tasty rolls. The ambience, as others have said, is more Hillcrest than East Co, but I'll take it and save gas.

I checked in on Yelp and we got a free appetizer. Not sure how long that promo will last.

It was a little loud, but if you expect it, it's not too bad.

One of the staff said they plan on showing UFC fights. I hope they do, because that would make this the only place where we could take our son, drink and watch the fight. Bonus. If you're reading this, Sei, please post it on your Facebook wall when you offer UFC and we'll be there!

The only thing more I could ask for is for them to get  a website with their menu posted rather than taking a picture of it on Facebook.

Love the atmosphere. Has similar feel to Tokyo sushi by sdsu but much more laid back and not as loud. Prices are great too $3.50 for the 8 pc Cali roll or $16 for a 4 item dinner. Cheaper than Bambu but not a hole in the wall type place. All of the servers were very sweet and attentive. We will definately become regulars here. My only disappointment is that the rolls although very fresh and tasty are rolled very loose and tend to fall apart easily.

I have to start by saying that I'm a sushi snob, having lived in Japan for four years and mastered the art of sushi eating.  So, I was excited by this restaurant which is not far from where I live.

The decor is a bit unusual for a Japanese restaurant.  For one thing, there isn't a sushi bar per se although there is a nice sake bar, which is where I ate.  Usually I tell the otemai to bring what he thinks is best but I have a few nigiri that I pay a lot of attention to so was very focused.  The waitress recommended the salmon nigiri;  it was the best of any of the fish that I ate.  The hamachi and tai were OK but not great.  The big disappointment was the uni.  The restaurant promoted uni shooters so I thought I would try some uni (I'm an uni aficionado).  Unfortunately, it wasn't very good;  you know it was a bit off-color and a little slimy and bitter.  Not the worst that I've had but clearly didn't meet my desires or expectations.  Also had a delicious spicy tuna roll and a roll that might be a "fantastic roll", which was, indeed, fantastic.

The service was very good;  fast and friendly.  I ordered iced tea but it tasted like iced water.  They replaced it with something that was supposed to be iced tea but may have been something else.  Finally I got a diet coke, which was diet coke.  The garli and wasabi were served on a regular plate - no Japanese style.

When I got the bill I thought they would deduct something for the uni, since I could only eat one of the nigiri.  Should have gotten it for free but at least half price :(  .

All in all I was a bit disappointed but will go back for a second try.

Every time my boyfriend and I go to Fresh n Easy, he would say that he wanted to try Sei Sushi (its right next door)...finally last Friday we decided to walk in. The restaurant is ultra modern...cool lighting....large TVs and comfy couches. I thought we were going to love the place...but I was WRONG. My boyfriends food came out...but my food never came. We waited for 45 minutes and during the entire time the server never came to check on us. Finally my boyfriend walked up to get her attention and asked to cancel my dinner and cash out for his. She REFUSED to cancel my order! She said that it was too late and that it was almost done!! Then we waited another 15 minutes before the food came out....I want not about to stay there a minute longer. I told the server I didn't want the food and just wanted our bill. When I go out...I am spending money to enjoy great food and great SERVICE. I didn't have either at Sei Sushi.

Below you can read my original review. I just wanted to let everyone know that since I posted this review I was sent a nasty email from either an employee/manager/owner which basically called me names and cursed at me. The only review that this person wrote according to their profile was a 5 star review for Sei Sushi. I think I called this out in the original review where I said that there are fake reviews! Please do not support this place which obviously thinks so little about our opinions here on Yelp! There are so many amazing places you can grab sushi at that you do not have to support these nasty people.

    Original Review--------

This place is terrible and if 0 stars was an option that is what I would rate it! They do not have a lot of roll options and what they do have is totally uninspired. They have crab listed in almost every roll which I was told was "krab." This should be specified on the menu. I got the "Navajo Crunch" which was described as spicy crab, shrimp, avocado, and spicy tuna on top with crunchies. I asked if I could sub spicy tuna for the fake crab and I was told it would be a 2.00 fee. The roll was already 9.00 so I wasn't about to pay more! I simply asked that they do not put fake crab in my roll to which I was reminded that it would still be 9.00. Great Thanks! I was sitting at the bar which is really just a bar as they make the sushi in the back (lame! what are they trying to hide?) and I literally could not bear the super duper loud Japanese pop music they were playing. I swear I thought I was in a club! I hardly could take one more second of the music so I asked that they make my order to go. I pretty much had to scream that to the bartender because the music was just so freaking loud!

When I get home I see that my roll was tiny! I mean tiny! Also the "shrimp" was tempura shrimp which was not specified in the details of the roll. I specifically avoided the rolls with "tempura shrimp" as I am eating healthy and did not want anything fried. Also the roll was sopping with spicy mayo and eel sauce. Something else that was not specified in the details of the roll. If it was I would have asked that it not be added. Again, making my healthy meal into a calorie disaster!

I truly feel like I got robbed at this place! The prices are crazy! Might as well go to Banbu Sushi if you are paying prices like that. At least their rolls are actually unique and different. I thought that customer service was lacking. 2.00 charge to something to be subed is crazy! It is not like I asked for seared ahi. Sushi Deli subs for free! And the music  was just so maddening. If you actually came here with people you would be hard pressed to actually have a conversation.

Was my roll worth 12.00 with tax? No! Especially when my roll was not even what I ordered. Maybe on the menu they should say that the sushi maker makes whatever the F they want to. Maybe others feel the same way because when I walked in at 6:30 pm during "Happy Hour" there was only one person sitting at the bar! That was it! Yeah I should have known to walk back out as fast as I walked in when I saw that.

DO NOT COME HERE! I am pretty sure that the other yelpers giving this place good marks must be paid by the place!

My daughter and I LOVE this place. They have the *best* spicy tuna rolls, they are the only ones my 8 year old will eat, they are one of a kind how they make them. The protein roll...all the yum -  none of the rice. I hope everyone makes this their number one place for sushi-just not at the same time I go there! The service is friendly and fast. Quality is top notch.

Sei Sushi is quite the experience. Based on the blaring rave-like music and the Japanese music videos playing on their HD tv's, this restaurant is probably shooting for the 18-24 demographic. Though the ambiance wasn't my cup of tea (my only reason for not giving Sei Sushi a 5 star rating), the quality and presentation of the food was fantastic! The appetizer and the sushi I ordered were all delicious and very artfully displayed, and my server was pro. If you don't mind loud music and flashing screens in the background, don't miss out on some great sushi!

I happened in this place by chance.  I had a half hour or lunch and thought, why not.  I ordered the spicy tuna roll and some edamame.  The food was awesome, and they didn't skimp on the fish.  I was not only surprised by the excellent food, but the service was wonderful.  They were busy during lunch, but i was served with a smile and well taken care of.  The prices were great, the portion was perfect and there were plenty of items on the menu to make everyone happy.

Nice little place, not to loud but with enough room to have several friends at a table or on a crowded night.  I was suprised to feel a dirty cup when I drank my tea and the table was still covered with finger prints.  I'm not sure what is behind the closed kitchen doors but time will tell. The food was okay but the ginger tea was outstanding.

My hubby and I went for lunch on a Monday.  The 3-items-for-$10 lunch special is a good deal, especially if you order all rolls (you can order things like salad, gyoza or tempura in your 3-item choice, but going all sushi gives you the best value for your money).

I'd say our lunch was "hit and miss".  And in fact, one of the (friendly, attentive) young waitresses described one of the rolls in just that way, after my husband told her his Crunchy roll was pretty bland and tasteless.  "Yeah, that one is kind of hit and miss.  People either love it or they don't"  Which I found kind of an odd comment, since Crunchy rolls are standard at most every sushi bar, and pretty hard to mess up.

In any case, the Navajo Crunch roll was far and away the best thing we had.  If we go back, that's what I'll be ordering, definitely!  Fresh, flavorful, yummy!  I also had the veggie tempura and liked what I ate very much (light, fresh-tasting batter) but Big D ate the tempura onion and said it had a raw flour taste.  The miso soup was nice.

On the down side, the Crunchy roll was bland, and the Scallop roll didn't seem very fresh and also was very poorly rolled.  The poor thing looked like road kill!  It looked so unappetizing I only had a couple of pieces and left the rest (we had a view into the kitchen and saw a man teaching another how to roll sushi, so maybe the newbie made my roll -- I'll try not to hold it against him, ya gotta walk before you can fly, right?)  Also had the sunomono salad, which was barely seasoned and rather flavorless.

When the bill came, I was quite shocked to see we paid SEVEN dollars for a pint of Asahi.  Dang!!  Granted, they import the keg directly from Japan (according to the waitress), but $7 for a pint glass of draft is waaaay high (don't think I've paid that for a beer downtown!)  When we asked whether there was a happy hour of any kind, we were told the owners priced the food low "all the time" so there wouldn't probably be food specials, but they're considering drink specials in the future.  Sure hope they discount the beer!

First time here.  $10 for a 3 item lunch combo with miso thrown in, I had to give it a shot.  My 3 items were the Navajo Crunch roll, the Philly roll and the 3 piece nigiri with tuna, salmon and yellowtail.  The Navajo Crunch roll was the star of the show, very tasty.  The Philly was pretty good, I'd like them to take it a little easier on the cream cheese, but still it was solid.  The nigiri was solid also, but let's face it, as long as the fish is fresh you cant screw up nigiri with such basic elements.  To top it off the miso was perfect on this rare, rainy San Diego Monday.  I will definitely be back Sei Sushi.

Also very cool how we got a free appetizer by checking in on Yelp. Finally cool restaurants are popping up in San Carlos, because we have nothing to really call out own in this community, Sei Sushi will be my one stop for when I crave some good Sushi.

This place is a hidden gem!  My friend and I just happened to discover it tucked away in the shopping center behind Walgreens off Navajo Rd by Grossmont college.  It has very low overhead and looks very plain on the outside, but once you step inside you are in for a surpise... it has very nice, modern and contemporary design and decor.  Very big open floor plan and great seating options...perfect for larger groups/parties.  They have a pretty big sushi bar.  They serve wine, beer, soju, sake.  Their rolls are very decently priced and they serve protein rolls (rolls made without rice)  for the more carb conscious eater.  The sushi was really fresh and good, I think the most expensive roll was $12 and the cheapest was $3.50!!  The service was excellent, our waiter checked on us frequently and let us try a complimentary pear drink...it was delicious.  My first time here and I was impressed and will be back!!  Oh and they even show/play authentic japanese music videos which was really cool, took me back to my memories of living in Japan.

    CLICK
There's my mental photograph of this place to come back again and again!
Eating here was such a treat, but the problem was that I couldn't stuff all of it down, and I'm balling on a budget. The menu has a great variety of food, surprisingly, for a sushi restaurant. They even have a beef roll! The dinner special is a treat, giving you a lot for your money, and enabling you to try out several different rolls at a great price. Our server was a young and spunky girl who offered great service, without the annoying lingering. NO LINGERERS!! Also, I ordered several bottles of beer, which can't go wrong, but was even better than most places. It was cold and crisp, to the point where I didn't even need a glass of water. The manager here is very sweet and made us several cocktails for the females in our party. I tasted the lychee mojito, and quite frankly, I'm upset that I am too ashamed to order one myself. Definitely give this place a try guys, and make sure to fill yourself as much as you can!

I'll give it 1 more try to see if restaurant wasn't just having Opening Day jitters. Couple negatives though; two massive wall TVs blared Japanese teeny bopper music videos (annoying), small floor plan (not good for a group bigger than 3), beer tap hadn't been installed yet so Asahi was only option.  $40 for rolls that unwrapped before you could pick them up. Boo. Because it's in the neighborhood, we'll go back in a month...see if it's earned a few more stars from us.

I was there first day of operation, in fact we were the their first customers ever. We were seated and taken care of immediately. Our waiter was very nice, though he wasn't too sure of his knowledge on the menu. The food was ABSOLUTELY amazing. The lobster bake was to die for, the sashimi was very fresh. All of the other rolls we got were superb. Highly recommend for lunch any day of the week.  The staff was nervous and giddy. I hope they succeed. We need a good sushi place nearby.

We were excited when we heard a sushi restaurant was opening nearby. The half off for the first three days was a nice catch to get people in. After eating there for the first time I was mildly disappointed. The fish was fresh but the rice was not seasoned well. They use the cheap wasabe and ginger. I was hoping for a little better. There was not any WOW factor. Overall, it was bland. My daughter liked it so we gave it another shot about two weeks later. I put in a to go order. When I went to pick up my order I used a $50 visa gift card. The waitress charged me about $4 more than what the bill said. When I asked her why she said its more because I'm using a gift card. I reminded her that a gift card is the same as cash. She disagreed. I chose not to argue or come back. Tokyo Sushi at 68th and El Cajon or Sushi Ota in PB are well worth the extra gas.

Great overall experience.  The sushi was great as was the service.  Make sure you try the Navajo roll.  It was awesome!  Check in on Yelp and you get a free appetizer.  We will definitely be going back soon.

The food is good. Prices are average. Service is decent. Noise is loud.  Great to have a sushi place close by.  Will definitely be back for the food, but it's a bit too loud for me.

I have eaten there twice now and had some of the best sushi I have ever eaten and had a great time. I don't usually write reviews on yelp but after reading how negative some of the past comments were I had to add my two cents. The first time I went in was on opening day and they were very busy but this is understandable for the opening week. All the staff seemed to be very nice and as helpful as they could be and our rolls were amazing!!!!
If you think that this place is over priced you obviously don't eat sushi often and cannot recognize quality when you see it. This place has some of the freshest seafood around. when I went back tonight all 3 servers remembered me from the first night! My rolls came out nice and quick and I noticed that they were taking to go orders again. I loved the fact that I could sit at the bar, sip on a beer, eat sushi and watch the playoff game! So, I think the TVs are a unique and awesome quality!
It seems that those earlier reviews were the result of a restaurants opening week and should be disregarded in my opinion. We have been waiting for a sushi place in this area and now we have one!!! And it's great so far!

Sadly, yet another sushi restaurant opened this week with delusions of grandeur.  For those of us living in San Carlos our heart lifted thinking we may have a new option for trendy food.  However, this is not to be the case.  Sushi restaurants in San Diego often tend to charge ridiculous prices for the choice of rice paper or soy paper in lieu of nori or seaweed in a Sushi roll.  It is a stupid practice as soy paper costs no more than seaweed paper.  However, this new little restaurant in San Carlos pushes the practice to a new level charging $2.00 a roll for the choice of soy paper.  This is more than the high end sushi palaces downtown charge.  Add to that the poor choice of placing large flat screen TV's scattered through the small place, this is one more Asian restaurant that cannot decide whether it wants to be a  sports bar or a dining establishment.   Thumbs down, skip it and head downtown.

My husband and I went here last week and loved it! The food, prices, and service was great. Our only complaint was the loud, obnoxious music. We noticed the big screen TVs above the bar the day before and decided to go watch the playoff game there Sunday night. They had it on, but only had the music from the other screens playing (too loudly, I might add). We weren't the only ones interested in the game, but we still got no sound. I little more effort in showing what the customers want to see and hear would be greatly appreciated. I don't think ANYONE would have missed the music videos being blasted. I will probably try it again and see if the music has improved. If so, it's my new favorite place to go!!!!

I've been here two times now and haven't really been disappointed. The food we ordered was really good (both times) and the service was really good (both times). Bonus....check-in on yelp and get a free appetizer. :) The food is a little on the pricey side but well worth it after you taste it, plus it's right down the street so it beats having to waste gas and drive somewhere else for some decent sushi. The quality of the food is really fresh as well. The sushi menu itself it not that big, but that's ok. Everything we ordered was delicious ~ from the Baked Salmon Roll ($11), to the Navajo Crunch Roll (I think it was $10), to the Crunchy (Tempura Shrimp) Roll ($9). So we checked in and got the free appetizer ~ 5 pieces of Tempura Shrimp (normally $6). It was just OK, but hey, it was free so no complaints. The Baked Salmon Roll is so tasty, but for being a "baked" roll, the salmon was a little under-cooked. I was a little disppointed because the first time I had it, it was perfect. (I can't eat raw fish right now because I'm pregnant.) So that was a turn off. My husband really enjoyed it though.

Overall, I would come back again and again. I would just wait until payday. :)
