I had a wonderful experience at Section 3, although my situation is quite a bit different from the other reviewers:

I am on my office's social committee, and in the past we've hosted our annual Christmas lunch at a private club, opting for the standard buffet setup. The lunches have always been nice, but they certainly weren't exciting. In fact, I would say they were boring. This year, I really wanted us to host our Christmas party at a restaurant in order to inject some style into the event, and after perusing tons of restaurants I came across Section 3. I sent an email enquiring about doing a restaurant buyout to Salli, the owner, and she responded within minutes saying that they could accommodate us.

Now, I have to say we're not exactly the easiest group to plan office parties for. Being a government office, staff have to pay for the party out of their own pocket, so we wanted to keep costs low so that people could afford to come. When we initially contacted them in the summer, we couldn't even give an accurate estimate about how many people would be coming, as our colleagues don't RSVP for the event until about a month prior. Regardless, Salli and Chef Ben worked with our group to create a custom menu that was within our modest price range, and I couldn't have been happier about how it turned out. Since none of us had ever worked with a restaurant before we had no idea what to expect, but Salli and her team made it effortless for us.

On the day of the event, we showed up to the restaurant and it looked spectacular. They had custom menus placed on the tables for all the diners, and although the social committee was expecting to have to do a little setup beforehand, they had already done everything for us.

Eighty-six people ended up showing up for the party, and the restaurant staff handled our group with ease. All of the service staff were outstanding -I heard multiple comments about that from my colleagues. Our waiter was terrific, and I was impressed with his memory; he remembered what everyone at my table was drinking, and he made sure we never had an empty glass.

Not only was the service great, but the food was pretty freakin' good too. My steak was cooked to perfection, and the pumpkin cheesecake that followed was one of the tastiest things I've ever eaten. I was amazed that they were able to turn out orders for 86 people at the same time -obviously they took a lot of time to prepare themselves for our group.

At the end of the party, I received a few comments along the lines of "Best. Party. Ever." Yeah, it was. Thanks again to Salli and team for making our event so memorable. Planning a Christmas party isn't exactly a simple task, but it certainly felt pretty easy with the crew at Section 3 on our side.

We came in pretty much because the ribs came with mac and cheese.  Cannot even tell you how excited we were about the promise of ribs, coleslaw, and mac and cheese together all on the same plate.

We were seated at a booth. I went to go check out the facilities (which were at one point nice I'm sure, but you know what? They needed a good thorough cleaning. They smelled of wee) and when I came back, we had been moved.  This was a little confusing.  As I was pointed facing where we had been sitting I discovered this was so a favorite/regular/employee/something could sit at the booth nearest the exit into the building, in eyeshot of her dog which was hanging out by the door. I like dogs so I couldn't mind a lot. It was just...interesting.

We shared a bowl of the chicken corn chowder, which I liked a lot, but my companion thought was a little on the bland side.

The ribs were nice, although I'm thinking there was a heavy handed dose of liquid smoke in the sauce. Our hands smelled like fake smoke almost to a comic level for hours afterwards.

Big Beef was with the mac and cheese. I recognise that the title of the dish is "mac and cheese" but the chef seems to take this literally, as it was just buttered macaroni with some cheese on top, warmed through. That's it. It was HIGHLY disappointing. There does seem to be some sort of vast misunderstanding in this city about how mac and cheese is made.

And for a place with such a nice looking bar, they sure seemed to be out of a lot of things to make drinks with.

The waitress wasn't awesome, and the bill took an awfully long time to come. Should people start just telling waitresses "I'm paying with debit" when the dishes are picked up? There is lengthy back and forth  with the bill, wait, then the card, wait, then the machine, then they leave, wait, wait, wait. Can't we solve this somehow? Surely no one is winning in this situation.

    Wasn't Wowed.

So... It was the Taste of Yaletown!!!

My best friend and I were hungry after Halloween shoopping and wanted to just go eat... Our first choice place was booked solid! Our second choice had a 2 hour wait for seating!

We didnt want to wait so we decided to go to Section 3 as there was room on the patio! I hadnt been here before but I had heard great things about this place so we waited the 3mins for the hostess to seat us!

    Here's what we thought!

    Pro's -
Our Appies were freakin amazing! SOOO TASTY!
The Stacked Cheeseburger with Bacon was the BEST EVER!!!!
The Food quaility and taste was TOP NOTCH!!!

    Cons-
The Server was friendly but her actual service was shotty and sucked! I didnt know how busy she might have been or what she was doing but she was never around when we needed her!
The food took forever to come out
The Entree's arrived before the Appies
We waited 20-25mins before our server first arrived!

I will definately be back as i try not to judge a restaurant on its first try! The foood however was well worth the wait!!!

I hope that next time we go back the service improves because it was the only thing lacking!

Just following up on my negative experience last week (the restaurant recording the reservation incorrectly and then a friend and I feeling rudely cast off when we showed up for the reservation we thought we'd made)....When the restaurant e-mailed to confirm the reservation the following day, we declined and repeated the negative experience we'd just had. A different (and much better) manager followed up with us and offered us dinner on the house to make amends. Nice of them to try to make things right so we decided to give it a second go. The manager tonight was very professional and accommodating and the wait staff was what you would expect. The food was just so/so but I'd probably go back for drinks at some point.

Cheap drink specials and good enough food.  This place is great to hangout with friends and get good and drunk.  They also offer affordable lunch options in expensive Yaletown and they have a decent patio in the summer time to people watch.

I've come here a few times over the years, and each time I've come the service has been courteous and friendly.  The atmosphere is also a little more relaxed compared to the other, way more pretentious places you can find in Yaletown.

I was very lukewarm on Section 3 the first time I came but I think it's because the service was so iffy. This time? The service was amazing. Our waiter was great.

My friend and I came because I had a Groupon for their prix fixe menu. It was pretty good; my steak was a little overcooked for my tastes but that's a little complaint. If you like strawberry lemonade, I recommend the Teeny Tiny Kate. Really good. I wish I'd ordered a double. And maybe another one after that :)

I'm not sure I would go back for the food next time but I wouldn't mind trying a lot of their drinks.

I went to Section 3 with a group of girls for dinner.  We all decided to try the taste of yaletown menu.  I didn't have high expectations since it was only $25 and didn't advertise themselves as gourmet restaurant rather as a fun hip bar.  The decore is hip and trendy.  The servers were young, cute, friendly and effecient.

Our server quickly greeted us when we walked in and quickly seated us at a table.  He took our drink orders very quickly and allowed us time to look at the food menu and chat a bit first.

Eventhough service was good, food was a different matter.  I thought there wasn't much thought to the menu.  I ordered the following:

1)lamb lollip with sliced potatoes - this dish sounded more like a main course except it was starter portion.  I thought it would be nicer if I was served on a bed of lightly tossed salad.  The lamb was flavourful and cooked properly.

2)Cauliflower gnocchi with sundried tomatoes- Maybe I was spoiled by authentic Italian restaurants who served fluffy gnocchi, so I expected the same here.  Boy was I wrong, it was dense and very doughy.  I found the sundried tomatoes to be too chewy and dry.  They should have been rehydrated with some sort of liquid to plump it up.  I couldn't finish the dish.

3)Kahlua Creme brulee - pretty good, I could taste the alcohol but it was pretty smooth.

One of my friends ordered prawns cooked in cream sauce.  It looked decent but nothing special.

I would have food elsewhere then go back just for cocktails since they didn't have an extensive wine list.  The atmosphere was fun.

from a quick glean of the taste of yaletown menus, one would guess that section (3) had the best menu.  It did  The beet salad was a typical salad.  It was the main and dessert that make it worth the money.

My main was a sheppard's pie - with a brisket as the meat.  The mashed potatoes were whipped and even with the butter, very light.  The portion was perfectly sized and ginormous on taste.

Having had the benefit of being able to sample the cauliflower gnocchi would make any future trips much more difficult to decide on a main.  The gnocchi was also a very generous portion, and its taste was stupendous.  The cauliflower adds a nice zip to the gnocchi.

Without a doubt, the service was amazing. We had the most friendly and courteous waitress - always smiling and very engaging.

I really don't know how I ended up drinking in Yaletown.  Random confluence of circumstances and acquiescence - basically, a shrug... "Ya, I'll give it a go."

Well - it was alright.  It's a bar in Yaletown.  You get exactly what you expect: trendy yuppie joint - whether this is positive or negative is up to you.  Music was a bit strange - I don't think I've heard 'Gangsta's Paradise' that wasn't played ironically in 10 years.

I tried to order the drink special - but my friend promptly reminded me that I was in Yaletown not Davie Street... seriously, why can't I drink a Cosmopolitan?  Isn't that what the strange natives of this land drink?  Oh well - I wasn't buying so I was forced to order double vodkas... poor me.

The entire night I was wondering why this place was named Section (3) and why there was a huge 'nerd' sign over the bar.  I am a proud nerd - there's nothing remotely 'nerdy' about this place as far as I could see.  But as the other write-ups mention, it's named after Section (3) of the BC Privacy Act after Robert DeNiro threatened legal action as this place was formerly known as DeNiro's Supper Club.

Okay - pretty cute story.  And I have a nerd crush on DeNiro as well - I channel 'Ace' Rothstein when I'm working (similar job conditions and I admire the character) and I drop the '30 second' line are words to live by (... well - if you're a sociopath).  But if you check out their website and accompanying video/documentary - it's a butthurt backhanded slap to Mr. DeNiro - crying about how he doesn't appreciate his fans and that they were unfairly targeted.

Honestly, the man was just protecting his name - would you guys be cool with me opening a restaurant called 'Section 3(a)' out of 'appreciation'?... just be glad the man didn't have you guys cattle-prodded and then have your right hands hit with a hammer...

Atmosphere was exactly what I wanted and expected from a Yaletown restaurant.

Section 3 is trendy and it shows in their decor and the people who dine here.  I love the cute little sign above the bar with the word "NERD".  The outdoor patio area is a good size and not too crowded.

The servers were friendly and the service was quick.  We didn't eat since we came here after dinner.  We had drinks ranging from cocktails to shots.  All were decent and a little overpriced, - as expected in Yaletown.  I thought the drinks can be slightly stronger though.

Overall, it was still a great place to hang out with friends.

I was pleasantly surprised by the quality of my brunch here. I had a delicious egg scramble with goat cheese, portobello mushroom, spinach and garlic (comes with bacon but I asked them to make it without). It was so tasty I would come back just for that. The potatoes were tasty, too, but I gave most to my friend as I'm not a big potato fan.

In terms of atmosphere, it's hard to beat the location and patio, especially on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Our server was friendly, kept our water glasses filled and brought our food out piping hot. Definitely a good option for brunch in my 'hood and I would also be willing to try their dinner menu if the occasion arose. I guess my expectations weren't all that high but I'm really glad I was proven wrong!

I bought a deal online ($40 for three course dinner for two people) for this restaurant. It was a very pleasant surprise, I must admit.
I liked the place, and the big NERD sign above the bar area. Food was really really delicious. I will definitely go back to try some more. I had a carrot - lemon grass soup, gnocchi with veggies for main, and a brownie for dessert. Soup was very tasty, a bit spicy which I liked, Gnocchi and veggies were OMG delicious! so much flavour! Brownie was also nice and gooey, and it came with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
Overall, the place looks cool, service is pleasant, and food is delicious.
Would definitely recommend it! The room itself is good for a group of people or a nice date ( since they have booths).

Might be better value in Yaletown for the same food.  Food was not bad, but a basket of fries costs over $7! (To give you an idea of how much things are).  Cocktails were tasty but not too much alcohol flavour (so depends on what you like).

It was a little hard to get someone to take our order, we even resorted to trying the Asian-waving thing but it didn't work.

Went here with the boyfriend because we had a $20 for $40 worth of food from LivingSocial.

When we got there, the staff seemed really disorganized. It was 630 on a Saturday and while the restaurant was empty, apparently the whole place was reserved with various parties. The group of 6 in front of us had a lost reservation, and when they pulled up our reservation it took them 5 minutes to figure out where to seat us in a restaurant full of empty 2 person tables.  However, once we were seated the waiter was very attentive and friendly, which made up for the less than stellar front-door experience.

Huge impressive drink menu. Fresh sheet was printed on badly trimmed printer paper-I know it changes weekly, but you'd think for the price and location they would try a little bit harder.

Started with the yam fries-they were a bit greasy and underseasoned, and the chili mayo had no flavour. I still think Cactus Club makes the best yam fries in town.

I had the chicken tacos with sriracha sauce ($16 off the fresh sheet). 3 small tacos and a salad. The salad was a bit oily. The tacos had good flavour, just the right amount of spice. But I thought it was a bit expensive for the portion.

Boyfriend had the babyback ribs ($23) which had a ton of meat and he thoroughly enjoyed. My friend, when she heard we were going here for dinner, also commented on the ribs.

Overall, the meal was fine but not memorable enough to return.

As usual for Yaletown, cramped street parking only at $4/hr.  But if you're coming by skytrain, it's only a couple of blocks away.

I didn't notice the bro vibe as much as my boyfriend did- at least, not right away- but the bro vibe was strong in Section 3 the Friday night we were here.

After a good meal, we were looking for one last drink, another spot to check out, and this bar/restaurant, at 10:00 seemed reasonably crowded but not over the top. We were seated by a hostess at this bench area, given food and drink menus, and then the bartender came over to take our order.  Interesting.

There were booths with a pre-clubbing Asian crew , some couple totally making out grossly, seriously, not in a good way, guy/girl groups of 3-4 here and there, and some bro's on the prowl at the bar, sadly there were no chicks in their immediate range.

Honeymoon in Vegas was playing on the LCD, which basically fueled our discussion for 2 rounds of drinks. Nicholas Cage. Leaving Las Vegas.  Has he done any Lynch movies, etc........ I got some Lychee Martini thing, it was OK.  Like other places in Van, they didn't serve it 'Up', it reminded me that this town ain't cheap, and we're spoiled by strong pours in the Bay Area.

Friendly but cocktails are sad here, the vodka with Jamaican beer is plain gross. The beers were alright. Poutine with ribs and goat cheese? Seriously? Where are the cheese curds? It was not paired right and left a lot to be desired. Best part is the patio.

I came here with two friends mid-week, just to grab a few drinks and something to snack. I had sushi before and wasn't that hungry - thankfully!

We got there at around 8:30p and it seemed to be pretty dead. Ok, not that unusual for many places in YT during the week, however the place had a strange flair to me.

The waitstaff was nice and chatty. Unfortunately it seemed like the competences ended right there. My friend ordered a few sides and they were forgotten about TWICE even after reminding. When the fries finally came out, half of the order looked like the bottom of the fryer! EEK!!

I ordered a Mojito which did not really contain much (if any) alcohol. I simply should have sticked to a beer... at least it can't be tampered with and you pretty much know what you get. Lesson learned!

The decor inside was interesting, pretty hip! Maybe if you get there at the right time and know what to order it can be fun. Unfortunately it was not that much of a positive experience for me. Therefore 3 Stars - and I'm generous with that!!

    Cheers

Had my first visit here last night and am not impressed. Our large group was seated in a back booth, which was nice and away from the crowd in the rest of the restaurant. Though, this also meant limited service as we were out of sight.
Cocktails are tasty and enjoyed the Barbie's Vacation. Not enough though for the  $7.25 price tag. The DJ was good and kept us singing along while we were there.
The real kicker to the night was that it turned out that the air vent directly above the booth (aka above my head) filters in air from outside where all of the smokers stand. Filled our booth with stinky smoke air and left me smelling like an ashtray. DISGUSTING. Uphold the smoking bylaws and make people stand in a proper area.

This is a really nice place in Yaletown for dinner and drinks. I wouldnt go here for a lounge experience though. The ambiance is really cool..soft red light. I felt that the place was trendy and different. Feels upscale with good service.

They have a weekly 3 course menu which is what I tried with absolutely no regrets. This menu is called 'Fresh Sheet Weekends' and is offered Thursday to Sunday. They have live music or DJ's on Fridays and Saturdays. They have daily drink specials and good lunch options from what I hear. Worth a visit if you have never been here.

This is a great place for drinks but not for a nice dinner. I wouldn't come here for the food. The music is the best part - I came here when they a live DJ - but very loud and everything is fast-paced, dark, and cramped. The bar gets VERY busy into the night. I came here with a big group (of 18 or something like that) and everything was just really crazy and hectic.

Not much service (probably because of our large group) but the food was pretty good. I hated that they played Psycho on the TV - not exactly something I want to see while eating dinner. I also thought it was funny that there was a family with little kids at another table. This isn't the place for kids, what with half naked girls on the back of the menus and a huge photo mural of boobs next to the bar.

Overall, trendy place for hipsters and partiers. Sweet music. Food wasn't memorable.

Yaaay! Section 3 changed their menu! And it's really good!

I live in the area so I end up going here for drinks a lot, which is always fun. The staff are friendly and efficient and there's lots of seating - a great patio, comfortable bar seats, high-tops, tables AND booths. They play fun music and the TV screens always have nostalgic 80s/90s movies that are fun to watch. I had eaten here once before and the food was just so-so, someone told me they hadn't changed their menu in years and the quality had kind of declined over time, but they have a new chef with lots of new creations.

We had the tempura prawns, pulled pork pizza and baked brie to start. It was all really good, the pizza had pulled pork, pineapple and bbq sauce, which was tangy and not too sweet. The brie was served with a whole clove of roasted garlic to spread (amazing) and some weird looking but tasty lemon chutney.

I had the filet mignon for my main and my dining companions had the ribs (which came with very indulgent mac and cheese that I gleefully helped myself to). Both dishes were stellar and such hearty servings we couldn't finish. The filet could have used a little less sauce, that cut of meat doesn't need heaps of gravy to make it delicious, but I still really enjoyed it.

I definitely recommend going for a casual dinner this summer on the patio before the sun abandons us for another year, it's a really great time.

When wannabe future stars cost your restaurant a star.

Yes that would be you - tall waiter with the goofy hat.  You haven't made it to Hollywood yet (and probably never will)....but last Friday you were supposed to wait on a table, and you so miserably sucked at that job.

So went to Section 3 for a friends birthday and was pleased with the ambiance and decor.  Ordering a beverage or food was like pulling teeth.  The "service" was so pathetic that after a while it became comical.  Surprisingly the beer on tap and the mac and cheese rocked.  The yam fries - were soggy and uninspiring.  The Tuscan chicken was decent.  The cheesecake was decadent and worth another visit - but only on a "takeout" basis.

Yo management - do you read these reviews? Do you know you have a problem here? I have nothing against eye candy - but not all eye candy is capable of serving tables.  Only the above-average food saved this from being a full blown Greek tragedy.

PS: Funnily enough the "additional tip" section below asks Waiter Service - Yes/No/Not Sure  -  Ha ha Not sure is my pick.

I've been going to this place a couple of times for different reasons.  The food is amazing, for all the people in the groups we had along those many nights were all eating fast, and not talking, and bragging about how fantastic the food was.  Salmon, chicken, pastas and desserts are just really good.  No problem there.

The drinks are pretty good and of a decent price.  The cocktail list is various and contains a lot to please a lot of people.  It's nice to have a large choice of drinks, you can get bored really fast when there's only 6-7 on a menu.

The service is where it gets tricky.  Going for birthdays and a goodbye party, yes there will be many people.  So the first birthday party we had was consisting of 12 people and everyone enjoyed the food and drinks.  When the bill came, uh-oh.  One bill.  450$.  So i wave the server: Excuse me, can we.... have this separated?.  "Oh, eh... well we don't.... really do that, but i can give you a pen..." was the answer.  People giggled like "what's happening? LOL".

OK, since your job doesn't consist of making our life easy, we will separate the bill ourselves, in the dark, on the corner of a dirty table, SURE.   So i tell him what i had, Salmon, 2 martinis, 3 margaritas, 1 mojitos etc.... "Oh, no, give me the amount you want to pay".  Oh well, 26.95+7.95+ya dee ya dee ya... Oh, one bill, one tax, 18% gratuity.  I don't remember my math course after that many drinks... but I'll guess higher...

After literally 35 minutes of scrambling through the one and only bill we were given, after 11 people calculating on it and paying what they thought their share was (yeah imagine 12 drunk people calculating in the dark), i ended up paying last and my meal and six drinks was getting to a total of  more than 90  dollars (i added the tax and the 18%tip yay!).  I'm asked how much do i want to pay.  100 dollars.  So i pay and put my coat and shabam!  "Sir, sir, we are missing money here". TADA!!!

Here we go, i just saw it coming.  I'll pay, i want to go home.  "Next time you can ask for a split bill before ordering".  Fair enough.

Yesterday we went for a goodbye party.  Same server.  I asked prior to order anything, "Excuse me, can we have the bill separated?".  Same insecurity and uncertainty: "Oh... eh not really, 15 bills is a lot".  Uh.... OK?  You restaurant will serve at least 300 people here tonight, 15 bills breaks your spirit champ?.  Uh... hello?.  Same old story, same old service, same server.  But this time in 4 hours we had to beg to get some drinks.  At least the food is still great.

We spent 45 minutes splitting the orders.  Please add your 6 orders, add 18% tip, 15% tax, go around the moon, build a house.  I guess people are not calculators, that's why we have servers.  I'm fuming and this server is so on the defensive about doing his job, it's mind boggling.  I am told: "Sir, we are short of 37$"

Can you picture the light of God descending through the ceiling with angel voices and some kind of Mozart music?!

So now i ask for a manager.  I wanted to stay calm, and have a nice evening, OK f*ck that.  I'm so tired of this BS, i can't believe this.  It takes so long figuring out what to pay and how to add everything, 10 people are already gone, OK we are all probably not geniuses but when i go anywhere else to buy stuff, I'm not asked to add A+B+C+D+E+F and add X% after 6 drinks.  That's torture.

The manager is a server as well.  So i say "It would be so much easier to split the bills, charge each individual the taxes and tip, everyone would take their piece of paper, get up, pay, go home and sleep, JUST LIKE IN THE OTHER RESTAURANTS. So the manager ask the server why he did not do that, and same old same old, he's crying on how hard it is to keep track of things etc etc.  I thought servers had that kind of responsibility...  Well i guess not.

After a 10 minutes discussion, i am served the "that's why we don't normally accept large groups" by the relentlessly lazy server, and i said that with organization, structure and method, all of this would pay off in the long run, JUST LIKE THE OTHER RESTAURANTS.  And i asked "Why do i have to do your job?".

Some people that were still there pitched in a little money and i put the rest.  My friends enjoyed a pasta plate and a drink that ended up costing 30$ instead of 20.

With the people that were still there we went to The Edge.  "Can we please have all the bills separated".  "Yes no problem", without that pathetic look on the face.  Gotta love that kind of service.

Moral of this story is, man i really have to stop being the last person to pay.

PS: the 37 missing dollars... i was wondering why that could be,.... but i figured it out... 37$ is about 18% of our total bill just as if people didn't want to leave him the included gratuity.... hmmm

Oh and some guy at another table got 20 shooters dropped on his head, neck and back.  HE had to ask to get a towel!

I went to Section 3 one night with a big group of friends...it was during Gay Pride so we were a big group of gay guys and one straight girl...you always need at least one;)...so we are ordering lots of drink and food..laughing having a good time when the table nest to us starts making rude comments...in a nut shell they were gay bashing...it was really loud and obvious to not only us but other patrons...one girl at another table even told them to grow up...

We asked for the manager and complained..we sent in the cute straight girl of course...but he said that since they were paying customers that "his hands were tied"..ummmmm...and what were we?? I guess that meant we didn't have to pay for the  liquor and food for 9 people??

So, we decided to just leave and take our business else where...on the way out we noticed the manager go up to the table and start chatting and laughing with them...he totally knew them...what a jerk...

I don't know who manges now as this was a while back but it defiantly  tainted Section 3 for me and I would be hard pressed to ever return...intolerance in this city in this day and age is unacceptable....

This is a relaxed place with decent good in Yaletown.  A lot less pretentious and has a great back story to the name.

The good is good, though nothing that particularly stands out in my mind.  Service is really good: attentive, friendly, timely, knowledgeable.

Good for larger groups too which is harder to accommodate in the area.

Can't believe I haven't written about Section 3 yet. It's one of the best one's in Yaletown!

So the story behind the restaurant name is really cool. Legend has it that the owner is a HUGE Robert DeNiro fan. So she originally named the place DeNiro's. Mr. DeNiro caught wind of this and prohibited it from happening. So it either went to court? Or had some legalities involved. So bottom line is that the Section 3 of the law stuff is what prohibits a person from using another person's name w/o their permission. Cool eh?

Now onto the actual restaurant. Stays open late for drinks and stuff? Plays loud music. Yuppie, urban vibe. If you dig it, then this place rocks. I'm more of a lunch and eggs bennie girl. And their lunch menu has the BEST wraps! Brunch menu too, for ten bucks flat.

Love the decor. Although there's a pair of naked boobs right on the wall, as you walk in. Kind of bold. But nice. Oh, and the sous chef is absolutely amazing! 5 stars!!

I've been a Section 3 hater for some time,  perhaps goes with my distaste for Yaletown in general (pity I work there).  Went here the other night under something of a protest and my loud mouthed buddy points at me and announces in a jovial manner to the waitress that I think their food sucks.   Thanks Jo! :)    After the awkwardness passed he had her suggest some things on the menu that didn't suck (his words) and she happily did.

Anyhow,  had the baked brie which was most excellent.   Sweet and creamy and baked to perfection.  Also had the chicken wings which were very well done and the beef ribs that were quite outstanding as well.

Service was prompt and considered by a friendly waitress.   No complaints.

Sorry for not believing in you Section 3,  I'll come back and try again.

So I can't recall over the years if I have ever actually eaten here or just come to try some of their excellent cocktails, I guess thats what their known for.  Last night was no exception

ok everyone.... it's story time..... Does anyone know where Section (3) got it's name?  no?

Well the restaurant was originally called De Nero's  after the owners favorite actor Robert De Nero.  However time went by and Robert himself caught wind of the fact someone had named a restaurant after him and threatened to sue if they did not change the name.... I personally don't see the harm, boo Mr De Nero.  So finally after a bit of back and fourth the owner of the restaurant finally decided to change the name to Section (3), a statute of the BC privacy act.

i love the back story of the name of this place..

they named it deniro's but cuz they didn't have the blessing of the actor.. they were sued and the court case referred to Section (3) so they used that name.  also above the bar you'll see the word 'nerd'.. its letters taken from the original name/sign of the restaurant 'deniros'.  fun facts!

last time i came here was a weekday for a late lunch.. i think we were the only ones there!  food and wine was great and we didn't mind having the place to ourselves.  tried to come here once on a friday nite around 10pm and couldn't get in cuz they were at capacity!  i think a lot of the yaletown crowd come here for drinks and to socialize.. it can feel stuffy in there when its packed.. but that can be fun sometimes too.

The décor and ambiance is an affair with retro sheik. I love the lighting, colors and nude pictures. My favorite piece of décor is the large 'nerd' sign hanging over the bar.  I warn you, this location has a large amount of female nudity, no complaints here. The waitresses even dress with allure and avant garde. You must order food while chugging down your lovely libations, this is a restaurant. The drinks are creative and well made for women. The waitress was kind enough, after I called out the strongest bucket o' alcohol weak, to top it off with two extra shots of whiskey. That means a total of 12oz of whiskey. There were 4 of us, they drank half, I drank the other half.

Food is good, music is electronic and trendy. The music is not my style but fitting for the ambiance. Sheik and sexy, take a lovely lady here and look at her not the nudy pictures, she will be impressed if you don't screw it up.

Came here for lunch the other day from work... and I was surprised with their extensive "lunch special" menu! It was fabulous - there was SO MUCH to choose from and it was all $10! I ended up getting the veggie wrap with tzaziki and fries - and I definitely feel like I got more bang for my buck....

However, the company that I was with ordered yam fries... and let's just say the yam fries LOOKED like they were burnt to a CRISP - BUT they were soggy.... Ewwwwwwww.... thankfully our server was nice enough to bring out another plate!

If you're looking for a somewhat hip, young place to have drinks and alright food for a reasonable price in Yaletown, Section 3 is a place to go. Not THE place necessarily, but definitely A place.

The food and drink selection is good, the prices aren't necessarily bad and well, it's adequate. I went once when their kitchen closed strangely early and for no reason but otherwise I really have no major complaints.

Often they feature pretty good music on big nights and also, if you get there at a good time (late or early) there's usually loads of seating.

There are plenty of options in Yaletown for this sort of thing and well, this is an option. Not better or worse, but...it's there.

Section 3 is a like a womanising man: smooth, charming, and sucks you in from the moment you step inside with its dim mood lighting, cosy booths, electric bar, and curtained-off private booth towards the back. Young, hip things serve you drinks of every kind and food that is a touch above "pub grub". There are statues of Buddha scattered around, and plush surroundings make you feel like you've stumbled into something special.

This is definitely not the most down to earth bar, but it's fun for a few drinks if you've found yourself in Yaletown.

I'd love to come back here after the Olympics, and for food next time.  We ended up just getting a beer and some fries. The fries were so good that we wanted to order more, but the kitchen was closed. :(

The venue had a great laid back pub feel to it, but yet also fancy. But not pretentious like a cactus club might seem.

They do have good beer on tap: Red Truck Ale.

For what and where it is, I don't mind Section (3). I like it when the dj gets his groove on in the window and doesn't seem to notice that he's in a room full of people (Thu-Sat there's a dj). The lights are dimmed, it's clean, the food is casual yet well delivered.

They have nightly drink specials in the $4-5 range and have some good specials. Like Wednesdays you can get thin crust pizza for $12 and there's pasta for the same price on Sunday. That's pretty good value for Yaletown, and you still get some cool atmosphere.

If someone suggested to me "let's meet at Section (3)" I would answer "Great." Although, it would not pop into my head as a place to suggest if I were wearing the organizer pants.

And I think that the "Nerd" sign over the bar has to do with the story (see shain r's review) of the original name being De Nero. Nero to Nerd is not such a stretch once you've invested in the signage. I think it's more of a lemonade from lemon's kinda sign than a "contrived" concept.
