drove from st. andrews to st. george(30min) and took a 20min ferry(free) to deer island, a 10km long isle where salmon aquaculture & lobster fishing thrives as small industry. the mini-archipelago is also a marine sanctuary and the pristine habitat is home to the BALD EAGLE.
sighted at least 5 juveniles and mature birds in flight or roosting on top of pine trees along the coastline.(and heard more). we kayaked into a pod of porpoises that made a distinct sound as they breathed. the waters are rich in herring which they feed on so sightings are plenty.
incredible amount of birdlife(blue herons, egrets, long cranes) and seals. plenty to see and discover in an afternoon of yaking around the islands. learned and saw all c/o owner bruce smith, his partner frances and crew austin who were great hosts/guides. really fantastic day out on the water and a great way to cap an adventure Canada road trip!Listed in: Roadtrip, waterlogged
