We loved the Scripps Inn.  My fiance surprised me with a stay here the morning I flew back in from a business trip in Australia.  We arrived and were blown away with the location and look of the place, couldn't believe how close we were to the water.  We had an amazing room, so huge with a separate seating area.  I didn't want to leave.  It was a great place to hang out and relax after a long trip.  In the morning we went to the office and got muffins, juice and they had a keurig so we got a coffee and sat outside our room and watched the ocean.  We are going back in exactly a month for my birthday and we have already requested specifically the same room we stayed in a few months back.  Love love this place!

Stayed here for two nights during the first week of this year. I have to say I was very pleasantly surprised at the location! I didn't realize it was literally right across from the waves - having the windows open at night to fall asleep to the ocean was amazing. The neighborhood (at least during the week) was very very quiet at night. I didn't even hear a car go by until the sunrise hours.

The room was impressively large with interesting historic touches (like the old doors, for example), several areas for sitting and relaxing, and a comfortable tub/shower. Aveda products were a nice touch, too.

Breakfast was continental with juices, muffins, croissants and such. Only real disappointment was that there was no fresh coffee - only whatever you make in your little room coffee maker. With all the great coffee places so close by it seems like it wouldn't be hard to have a service bring around a couple of vacuum carafes for the morning.

Really, the coffee is my only complaint! And that was easily fixed by a nice five minute walk up to Aroma Cafe :^)

If you're fussy about pillows, bring your own - but that counts for any hotel, doesn't it?

If I ever revisit La Jolla I'll check on Scripps Inn before anywhere else!

We stayed at the Scripps Inn during our wedding weekend as it is directly across the street from Cuvier Park (where we got married). Because our wedding was close to Thanksgiving, the rates for the rooms were pretty expensive at the time. We booked the Garden Suite for the night before the wedding to make sure that we had enough space for me and my bridesmaids to get ready. We booked the Vista Ocean Suite for our wedding night (the best room of the hotel). When checking-in on the day before the wedding, the staff told me that the guests who were staying in the Garden Suite wanted to stay longer so they gave us a two bedroom suite (which actually costs more) but didn't charge us more for it. It is larger than the Garden Suite as well, so it worked out well while we were getting ready for the wedding.

The staff at the Inn also moved all of our stuff (we had A LOT) from the two bedroom suite to the Vista Ocean Suite for us while we were getting married; so that helped a lot! On the day after our wedding, waking up to see our ceremony site and the ocean was perfect. The staff at the Inn was great and although pricey, it was well worth it to stay there. I would definitely recommend Scripps Inn for anyone getting married at Cuvier Park.

How is it possible that I am the first person to write a review for the Scripps Inn? I find that rather amazing - kind of like how we wound up staying here in the first place.

After a long weekend in San Diego, visiting with my friend and her brand new little baby (awwww). My BF and I stopped for breakfast in La Jolla before hitting the road back to SF. Well...the weather was perfect, the sun was shining, the sky was clear and blue. We were right on the coast overlooking the crashing waves,  admiring the plush beauty that is La Jolla.

Suddenly it hit us both - HARD. I'm not ready to go back! Nooooo! Please just one more day, I have to get in that ocean, I can't go back - not yet. I'm not ready! Visiting with the cute baby was fun and all, but this..this looks like VACATION! I must remain here.

So...we both cleared our responsibilities with a shake of life's Etch-a-Sketch and took a stroll along the beach after breakfast.

That's where we happened upon Scripps Inn. It is perfectly situated a shell's throw from the beach. Just fourteen airy, beautiful rooms with spectacular ocean views. Some of them also have fireplaces.

Just as we walked up to the charming B & B the manager walked into the office. As luck would have it, someone had just canceled their reservation. There was one (perfect) room available, for just one (perfect) night. YES! Fate was on our side.

The room was flawless, the location could not be beat. The service was extremely accommodating and helpful. Ahhhhhh.....a truly memorable extra 24 hours of life spent in sun, surf and supreme comfort. Thank you Scripps Inn, thank you Fate and thank you BF for knowing when to shake life's Etch-a-Sketch.

What a treat it was for us to find such an amazing place!  Via http://Hotels.com, I found this place and decided to give it a go due to location and price point (http://hotels.com lowered the price from $265 to $285 for a deluxe).  The location alone is completely worth the price, however, what sets it over the edge is the management.  Elaine Akeroyd, the Scripps Inn Hotel Manager, was the best hospitality employee I have come across in my trips.  Her attention to detail and general warmth as a person, really made our trip such a delight.  I highly recommend seeking out her advise and attention when you decide to stay here, you will NOT be disappointed!

The rooms themselves are not exactly 5 star (dated furnishings...), however, you could care less due to the overall beauty of EVERY ROOM having an Ocean view!  This is a "down-to-earth" establishment, and it wouldn't be the same if everything was ultra modern and chic like most places that charge this much, but it suits the Scripps Inn perfectly!

Don't bother staying anywhere else in La Jolla...trust me.  This is a GREAT establishment!

We stayed here on our wedding night and for a couple more days after that. It was everything I could have hoped for! It was SO nice! The bed was huge and so comfortable. We got the room that was on the second floor, facing the ocean. The location can't be beat and there's nothing like waking up with your new husband for the first time and opening those windows to that gorgeous ocean view right there!

They were so nice and we got a pretty good deal (of course, we'd booked it way in advance). This place books up fast so I would suggest anyone wanting to stay here do the same.

They had some fruit and cereal downstairs for breakfast. I don't remember if there was anything else, but we wouldn't have really partaken in that.

My only complaint was that it was kinda cold at night and I ended up getting a cold the week after the wedding. But, that can't be their fault really and so I didn't put any marks down for them on this. My advice is though that you should ask for extra blankets (yes, even in june/july) and make sure you close those windows at night. When that marine layer comes in with the moist cool ocean air, you will be happy you did!

All in all, you should definitely stay here, especially for any special occasions! It's a treat!

The manager Elaine, is just great.  I had a package UPS'ed to me (at the hotel) that I missed by almost a week.  Instead of refusing the package (as most hotel employees would have done upon noticing that I had checked out) she remembered me, signed for it, and then had it FedExed to my home in New York.  Had to update to give kudos for exceptional service, during and after the stay.  :-)

This comfortable and relaxed inn offers the perfect location and most amazing setting. Sounds of waves crashing both welcome you and lull you to sleep. The inn itself is charming, and our room was quite inviting. Elaine, Maya and LT were gracious, accommodating and helpful. A repeat vacation getaway for sure!

the published rate is $225 for a deluxe room, but we were in town for a wedding and received 20% off. i felt that the price is a bit high for what you get.

i loved how conveniently located it was to downtown la jolla.  we were within a 5 minute walk, and we were steps away from the beach (literally!).

    pros:
close location to beach & downtown
    free pastries for breakfast
    friendly staff

    cons:
    cleanliness of bathroom
    cleanliness of in-room fridge

The place is nice and beachy (but not kitchy), and you can smell the ocean from your room. This is all fantastic. It's in over-priced La Jolla, so the rooms are accordingly over-priced (and I'm from the Bay Area, so I know over-priced, I'm not just being naive). But you know that going into it.

Here are a few little negatives that added up to bump this down in the ratings:
    - If you say you're "steps from the beach" and your hotel pictures are all made to look like the ocean's at your front door, it's a disappointment when I show up and see that you're very motel-looking and you're actually across the street from the beach. I mean, you're still close. But that romantic get-away inn that you advertise? I've been there, and this is not it.

    - Please do not advertise "complimentary continental breakfast" when you've got a stack of local papers and a cafeteria tray of crusty-looking pastries in your closet-sized lobby (and our in-room coffee makers supplying the morning joe). We went out both mornings, not necessarily by choice, but we wanted some real food...

    - Don't charge me a ten dollars a day "parking fee"!! It's not like it was valet or that we were parking somewhere other than the small lot in front of the inn. We would have parked on the street had we known we were getting nickeled and dimed.

If you know what to expect, this place certainly beats staying at a downtown hotel or an inn decorated to look like your aunt's farmhouse. I most likely won't go back given the price, but then again, maybe there aren't better options...

We have stayed here several times and I must say that is is one of our favorite places to stay. We recently went down for a night and it was really nice. It is literally across the street from the beach. There is a nice little green belt across the street looking over the water with picnic and park benches. It is a great place to sit and watch the sunset. Hard to beat the location. It is close to downtown La Jolla within easy walking distance (one small hill to climb).

The room is nice and clean. We prefer the room tucked away in the corner for extra quiet and privacy. The staff is very helpful and friendly. There are also nice touches like terry cloth bathrobes in the closet.

The only semi-negative thing that I would say is that the shower in our room did not have very good water pressure. Not a deal breaker though!

Scripps Inn is the BnB category. Therefore, it receives a 5 for its exceptional service. Although the breakfast is not a "hot breakfast", they have phenomenal local pastries. What really sets this Inn apart is the location and the staff. Elaine is an absolutely amazing host, and the Inn is literally across the street from the water and within walking distance to all of the great things that La Jolla has to offer. We went here for a special weekend and she ensured that it was all we hoped it would be.

The Scripps Inn in La Jolla is GORGEOUS! It is everything a small, intimate, beach "inn" should be. I stayed for two nights the weekend of June 26/27 for my best friends wedding and could not be more impressed. Our two bedroom suite was exceptional! There was a living room area with a couch (pullout bed) coffee table, and big flat screen tv. This was connected to the little kitchen area with a sink, burners, fridge and small kitchen table. The bathroom was nice and both bedrooms were roomy and comfortable. This suite was more than enough room for the bride and her three best friends! One bedroom has a window with a gorgeous ocean view. Outside our front door was a large shared baloney with a patio set. Downstairs is the small lobby and front parking lot. Coast highway is in front of the Inn and on the other side of it is the Pacific Ocean. The staff was courteous, accommodating and friendly. The amenities such as Aveda products in your bathroom is a nice touch.  If you are looking for a quiet, romantic, beachy San Diego weekend this is a great place to stay!

This place is worth it if you purchase the spring special for $145/night. The room was clean, roomy, and cozy.  The location was great, right by the ocean, shops, and restaurants.  If you're a young couple not planning to stay in the room, this is the place for you.  If you're looking for peace and quiet and planning to stay in the room, this is NOT for you.  The tv (as past reviewers stated) does NOT work.  You must get up and walk to tv each time you want to turn on/off tv and increase/decrease volume.  Also, every 20 minutes you must reboot cable box because tv screen will go blank.  Luckily, we are not tv watchers so it didn't affect us much.  The room was clean, except for the one roach and came out the first night next to the bed.  We didn't see any more since that first night and the room did look pretty clean overall.  Don't expect to find any hotel/inn workers.  I went to lobby and waited 15 minutes both times to get  internet access and toiletries. One time, I just called the inn from my cell phone to see what would happen and suddenly they magically appeared. I gave it 4 stars because it met our expectations for the price and location. The roach almost made me give it a 1 star, but I figured it was a fluke.
