Still amazing, and now they have AVX, so you can buy in advance and just walk in and sit down, no fuss no muss.  Sure, it costs a few extra bucks but you can just walk in 5 minutes before the film starts without worry for where you might sit!  It's awesome, especially for big new releases!

Also wanted to point out that contrary to what I've noticed seems to be popular belief, this place is owned by Cineplex and only branded Scotiabank, thanks to the massive shared customer loyalty program they share (SCENE).  If that program ever goes away you can bet the ScotiaBank banding will too!

I don't go to movie theatres.  And yes, I *would* download a car if I could.  But every once in a while, a big movie will come out that I am willing to spend some dollars on to watch it ASAP.

Unfortunately, I'm a geek who likes geek films.  And geek films always has monstrous lineups on opening weekend.  And like going to a comicon, you will be standing in line for hours on end with nerds dressed up in costume and fight the lingering BO in the area.  Beyond just how expensive movies theatres are in comparison to just stealing them online, I just don't want to deal with the crowds, lineups and overpriced concessions.

But -- enter UltraAVX, Cineplex's new theatre system.  For $17.50, you get:
    - *reserved* seating - no more lining up, you can show up during the trailers and you'll get the sweet seats you picked online
    - comfortable rocker chairs that lean back
    - some other marketing hoopla about better sound/screen - I didn't really notice

For the time savings, guaranteed seats and better chairs -- totally worth the extra $4.50 per ticket.  Reserved seating for movies was a pipe dream of mine - hopefully, we're on the path towards licensed theatres and 'bed-chairs'.

Parking downstairs is $8.50 after 6PM.

The great thing about this theatre is that it always has the latest box office flix playing at multiple times.

The problem? It is always SO CROWDED. Going to see a movie on opening night here is just out of the question for me. I'm shaking my finger at whoever designed this theatre. If you go on a Friday night, you'll find that you walk into a teeny tiny atrium with NO breathing room. Which line do I get in to go where? So many people crammed into one tiny space! So after waiting a bazillion years just to get to a kiosk to buy a ticket you have to stand in another huge line just to ride the escalator, and then you probably have to wait in another huge line just to get a seat. I wish I could say its the same at any theatre, but no. I've seen movies in Halifax, Ottawa, Edmonton... basically coast to coast... and this is by far the worst theatre in terms of layout I've ever been to.

One time I tried to avoid the lines to get into an AVX 3D movie by ordering online... but then you couldn't choose your seats... so I ended up having to walk all the way there just to stand in the longest line of them all (to see an actual person) to have them change my show to a later time so I didn't have to sit in the 3rd row. Good thing I had a lot of time on my hands and a bumpin' playlist on my iPhone to get me through it. But they were nice enough to switch it for me, so all was forgiven.

Once you go upstairs, you have a ridiculous amount of breathing room in expansive foyer's with concession stands. I remember as a kid, my mom used to make popcorn before we went to the movies and pack it in ziplock bags for my little brother and I, and stash it in her giant mom-purse to sneak it in for us. And that was way back when movie tickets were like $7 instead of $13. And seeing a movie was an event in my family. It only happened like once a year. Now that I am an adult with bills to pay... I find myself doing the same thing. I'll stop off at the dollar store for a pack of Nibs before I go to act as blinders when I pass the concession. The price of everything is fixed just like any Cineplex... so I like to go on Tuesdays when a ticket is way cheaper, and use my Scene card for a discount on a snack. If I do get a snack, I'll usually get a frozen yogurt because that's where I feel the least ripped off (it's about the same price as a Yogen Fruz anywhere else). Just don't order a Smartwater... because they are like $4. Just stop off at a 7 Eleven on the way there...

The theatres themselves are pretty good. Pretty clean, with comfy chairs. The AVX theatre is the nicest of them all... but probably not worth the extra dollars if you're as frugal as me and often find yourself saying, "Nah, I'll just wait for it to come out on Netflix." I am always freezing in my seat by the end of the movie... so remember to bring a sweater!

The fact that this theatre is owned by a bank says a lot about it. It's an inevitability, really -- almost as if Scotiabank Theatre is just asking to be compared to its namesake. So...

    1. A large bank's main concern is to use its resources as efficiently as possible to maximize the earnings. This is the same here: more advertisements before screenings, higher prices for admission and snack-ish things (like popcorn), and teenaged staff who are willing to do the most work for the least amount of money.

    2. Unlike a credit union, which is a local member-focused cooperative, banks are owned by a wide-ranging group of stockholders who usually want to make as large a profit as possible. In the case of Scotiabank Theatre, it means that the selection of films are relegated to more mainstream mass-appeasing selections -- not that there's anything wrong with that, it's just... you know.

    3. Most banks are fairly efficient (because of the aforementioned profit and stakeholder thing). In this case it means that there are a number of options as to how one is going to do business here. Pay online, pay at the self-checkout, pay to the real person -- it's all good. This ultimately means that the lines will usually move pretty quickly, leaving less time to munch on your smuggled treats.

    4. Banks have more disposable cash. This means that the Scotiabank Theatre's seats are roomy, plush, and oh-so comfortable. But just like in a bank, they are not for making out in. Others will notice, and it will get awkward.

I like this theatre just fine. Good air flow, big seats, massive screens -- what else does a movie-goer need?

AWFUL SEATS!  I was in theatre 8 watching a movie which was one week out and there was metal sticking out of the seats in the entire second row.  Everyone around me was moving uncomfortably in their chairs for two hours and I could barely walk for the rest of the evening due to nerve pain in my posterior and down my legs.  I complained and wanted to speak to the manager and was told there was no manager.  The young man who I showed the seats asked, "What metal?" and I told him to actually feel the seats and to run his hand down every one in that row.  They just said, "It's an old theatre.",  which it is not.

Very nice theatre in the downtown and sure as hell better than Metro!

It's a pretty sizable theatre, however they decided to build it up and not across, so be prepared to take a couple of escalator to your destination.

Because of it's location, I believe it does filter some people out and doesn't get as hectic as some other central location theatres.  The lobby however does look super crazy at times cause everyone is funneled into this small section, but once you ascend it all spreads out.

I heard there's underground parking for $7, or street parking, but that' another premium I don't want to afford.  However, if you catch a late show, free parking after 10 of course..... FYI there is free parking around... but you gotta find it!  You're gonna have to pay me if you want my knowledge though! lol

Erm...I'm the type of person who likes to watch films alone (when I do watch them), but I always have people staring my way and wondering what I am doing...so if you want to be alone in a theater, I would go elsewhere, or go at a time when it's less busy (not in the evening).

You'll get a seat like at every other theater if you arrive 10-15 minutes before the film begins, but some people ignore this and are faced with sitting at the very bottom...not a great way of enjoying a motion picture.

I've never tried the food there (movie theater food = bleh), but the bathrooms are clean, and there are tables to sit at if you feel like lingering.

Also I've never had a problem with bringing in my own food/drink(s). ;)

I love Scotia theatre... It only loses one star for the freakin prices but it makes for an awesome after-dinner end to a lovely date night.

The seats are so comfy you don't get the squirms halfway through the movie trying to un-numb our butt.. I think the sound could be not so loud but that might just be my age talking.. either way, it's a good experience. Just bring ALL of your money so you can buy a 5 dollar fountain pop...

Its not charming or old but its nice, clean, the staff were good. There was lots of room so we got good seats, and they have 3D movies! The popcorn was also excellent and the little frozen yogurt place rock(yes we ate all that and more) The seats were comfy and despite the prices of movies being completely ridiculous these days, it was a good night out for a double date :-)  Also if you banl with scotiabank you can collct points everytime you use your debit and go see a free movie every couple months as well as get popcorn and drinks( our friends did the whole night for free)They also have a machine kiosk to sign up for scene cards which I did, so I can collect points when I watch movies there and hopefully eventually get a free movie for me and my lady! Overall a good experience and a great location

This is most stylish of all the theaters in the Vancouver area.  One of the largest theater was recently upgraded to Ultra AVX which offers leather reclining seats, seat reservations and better sound. The picture might be digital too. The seats are a bit more comfortable and the amount of leg room is about the same. This comes at an extra $3. It now costs $16 to see a movie in this theater, a bit pricey. The other theaters are still $13.

Overall this is a nice looking theater.

It can get crowded at times especially around the lower lobby area in the evenings. The best time to come is a weekend afternoon after shopping on Robson street and before you go out for dinner. 3-4pm is a good time.  It is not too crowded at this time and you will most likely have lots of empty seats around.

One of my favorite places to watch movies. It is not as packed, and the layout of the theater is my favorite. 3 floors of movie rooms and the food here is a lot better, but who buys theater food anyways? Ew.

I come here as I always seem to get special night showings for movies that are not released yet. They always have events here for that, and midnight showings of movies that people will wait in line for. I will be here for Avengers and Batman.

The layout of this theater is just perfect, three floors of amazing movie goodness, the walk ways are large enough to walk and have space to NOT bump into people.  And the decor of the place is amazing, there are actually full sizes advertisements here as well and beautiful decked out ones too.

The crowd that does come at night are not teenagers or kids, they are an older crowd who doesn't talk in movies or laugh randomly( wait I spoke too soon). There would always be that group of geeks who laugh together at the hero movies and freak out at midnight showings (worth to go for the environment).

Overall, my favorite place to go watch movies. Find me here for most midnight showings and exclusive preview nights.

Okay, let's be fair right off the bat; for the most part, a Cineplex theater is a Cineplex theater. When you've seen one, you pretty much have an idea what to expect of them all: they're like the McDonald's of movie theaters. That being said, this is probably the most unique one I've ever seen. Coming from a city where everything is much more widely spread out, the idea of turning something like a movie theater into a multi-floor format is completely unheard of, and the idea of having my ticket ripped and being told "You're on the third floor" left me completely flabbergasted.

On top of that, this location had some of the nicest, most friendly (and, stopping for a bit of a guy moment, some of the most attractive) staff I've ever encountered at a Cineplex location before. They actually seemed genuinely interested in making the movie-going experience more enjoyable.

Now, obviously things like ticket and concession prices, start times, etc. are all mandated by the chain so there really isn't much these guys could do about that, but in terms of the things they had control over, these guys really made my day (all three times I've been there on vacations) and the location is AMAZING, sitting right in the epicenter of what I found to be the easiest streets to learn so with less than two days in the city I found this to be one of the easiest landmarks to use to find my way around. It seemed no matter where I was or where I was trying to go, I kept finding my way back to the Scotiabank theater from one direction or another.

All in all, I'm sure this place seems run of the mill for people who call Vancouver home, much like I'm sure I take for granted a lot of the cooler sights in Calgary, but as a tourist this place was an absolute delight, to the point that I went to see a movie I was only moderately interested in just for a chance to go back.... and with the number of hotels within walking distance, I can't recommend it enough for people in from out of town who're looking to kill a couple hours.

I come here a lot with my friends. Fairly convenient location, huge theatre, with everything you would expect a theatre to have, close to lots of restaurants. The stumbling blocks are the prices of their food is too high, and no free parking. There is underground parking but it's expensive.  International Village theatre was validated before and now it's free parking. Scotiabank should do the same. Parking is a ripoff there.

My fave cinema to go to for all the big releases. I immediately signed up for a Scene card on my first visit - one more film and I have over 1000 points, meaning I get to see the next film for free! Let's hope there's no hassle.

Compared to the cinemas I frequented back in England and Germany, this is by far the cleanest. I've never had any trouble at them either (like annoying fellow movie-goers), and there seems to be staff in at various points during the movie. Though them walking across to sign whatever it is on the wall can be a bit off-putting, totally takes me out of the movie.

Yes the price is a little steep, but it's cheaper on Tuesdays, so if you're willing to wait, go then :) As long as it stays clean, I'm willing to pay that extra price! Lots of parking for bikes out the front too, if you're a biker like me!

GAH! I am so tired of these huge, ridiculous, over priced, over the top theatres. I want the Hollywood theater back.

But given that I can't have that, I go here. Scotiabank.

It's pretty swanky. There are a bajillion theatres, they have all the pop and popcorn you could ever need and it's all really over priced.

While I won't even begin to discuss the cost of going to the movies these days I will say the following about the Scotiabank Theatre:

    The staff are friendly.
    The seats are comfortable
    They have lots of washrooms
    The service is pretty fast
    They carry lots of movies.

I think when it comes to movie theaters there are a few things one has to accept. These are perhaps pieces of knowledge that should have been bestowed upon us all as children.  First of all you will always pay out the nose to sit in a crowded theater to watch a movie and listen to other people munching on popcorn and slurping fizzy beverages. Secondly you will also pay out the nose to buy said snacks.  You may wait in many lines including, but not limited to, the ticket line, food line and the end of movie washroom line.  If you arrive late to the theater count your lucky stars if you get a ticket and then again if you actually get to sit with your party.  These are just a few of the simple joys of going to the movies.  I'm not sure if theater owners have ever tried to play with this tried and true formula, but the Scotia theater definitely hasn't.

They have made sure that you don't have to stare at the back of someones head by sloping the seats.  The interior is clean and modern thus pleasant to be in. My feet have never stuck to the floor here nor have I had to scrap gum off my coat.  All in all a pretty good theater.

Scotiabank Theatre - you'd be 4 stars if only

-You'd allow a scene card to be per ticket, not per purchase. Why must I type in my information twice if I'm buying 2 tickets?

-You'd play something, anything when you know people are sitting patiently for an hour waiting for a show to start... I'm guessing you could make more cash on advertising there, just sayin'

-When I order a small popcorn with butter (that costs $7!!!!), and there's FRESH popcorn popping right behind you, you'd have the courtesy to scoop a fresh batch rather than reaching into your stash of luke warm, almost stale kernals. I can't believe I didn't complain and demand the just popped batch.

Well I ate m&ms that I snuck in along with an adult beverage, not once, not twice, but every time I come to your theatre. You hear me? Every time!

You're lucky you're pretty and that you have lots of showtimes, theatres, clean bathrooms and the convenience of being within walking distance to me, or else I'd be sneaking in my own popcorn too (and I don't have a microwave!)

This theatre was adjacent to our hotel so both on our first night in Vancouver and our last day (due to rain), we went to the movies on our vacation.

This place is 3 stories tall and very cold feeling. The movies are expensive at $12.50 per adult ticket and they do not have matinee showings. The second floor is where the "food court" is with the regular popcorn, candy and pop offerings but also a TCBY, a pizza hot dog joint, a bubble tea place and last but not least a Burger King! I had never seen a name brand establishment in a movie theater before and had to look. They had mostly the same menu but at a way elevated price-extra value meals were anywhere from $8.50 to $14.00!

The individual theaters were large and stadium seating. They were fine  but the seats did not recline nor did the drink holders go up.

All in all decent but not even close to comfy.

This place has suffered major breakdowns the last two times we have visited.  First sat in to watch the King's Speech and twenty minutes into the previews they announced that they were unable to screen.  Gave us two tickets for the one - but come on = between 500% markup on popcorn and parking and the time - you could do better.

We came back a few weeks later and they could not process credit cards nor did they want to take our Costco coupons - it was CASH ONLY.  Seriously this is 2010 (not 2000-late).

The screens are decent and the sound is good.  But with overpriced stale popcorn and lined up washrooms seriously crave another option in downtown.

    * Mostly mainstream movies, but nice chain theatre digs *

I don't come here very often, because I frequently find the movies I want to see aren't playing here (better luck at Vancity Theatre (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...), Fifth Avenue http://www.yelp.ca/biz...), or Pacific Cinematheque (http://www.yelp.ca/biz...) usually).  But I wanted to see The Cove, and the only spot in town was surprisingly here.

Nice stadium style seating with comfortable chairs and a good sound system.

They have a large variety of food, etc. too but I didn't take part because I had just eaten prior to the show.

I'll reserve comments on the actual movie as it might be controversial to write about how I thought the film was pretty biased.  Oops.  There I go!

Okay, so I'll admit this is just another multiplex theater, with typical $10 movie ticket prices, $6 nachos and $4 sodas. A clean enough environment, stadium seating, and dolby surround sound. So why five stars. When was the last time you went to a theater and in addition to their typical hot dog, nachos, and soda. You could actually buy Bubble tea, Taco Bell, KFC, AND TCBY?!? seriously had I not eaten dinner right before watching Yes Man, I would've bought like $30 in extra fast food to chow during my movie. I always said you know I wouldn't mind spending $10-15 in movie concessions if they'd at least get us some decent fast food concessions. And here it is.

Oh my God it is wonderful! I only hope theaters in the states (or at least Seattle-area) will follow this pattern. Nacho Supreme, with a KFC snacker, a Taro Bubble Tea, and TCBY Fro-Yo for Dessert...all while watching a movie (and probably pissing off your neighbor). What more could you ask for?!?

What I have a hard time with is the cost of the concession stand eats..I know all theaters are expensive but Scotia seems more some how....I bought a bottle of water and some Nibs and it cost me $13...how is that even possible???...I though he had charged me wrong...why is a normal bottle of water $4 inside a theater and $1.69 at London Drugs...I don't get it...I think more people may go the the movies if it didn't cost $75 for popcorn and a pop...I'm just saying...

Big screen, big sound, and big prices equals big migraines. Unless you live downtown, it's pricey for anyone else to just go to this theatre to watch a movie because of the expensive parking anywhere downtown. Although, I like to watch movies here because of their comfortable seats and general cleanliness. The theatre has three levels and concession stands on all levels but the higher level ones may not be open at all times. They have decent choices (BK,KFC,bubble tea) as compared to Silvercities in Metrotown and Richmond. Unless you want Scotia to take you to the cleaners with their overpriced concession food, I would eat before movie or sneak snacks in your shopping bags. Sorry Scotia, "I'm not richer then I think".

I come here all the time. There are tons of screens and they get most of the new releases pretty quickly. A standard adult ticket is $12.50 after taxes and, of course, the popcorn and stuff is outrageously expensive. Maybe go to the 7 Eleven down the street for some chips or something and just smuggle it in. I've never seen anyone get checked. :P

One neat thing about this place is that it has a few fast food outlets, like KFC or Taco Bell, so you can show up early and have dinner or take some popcorn chicken into the movie with you. The stadium style seating means never having your view obscured by a giant hat or stupid hairstyle.

If you live in the area and are likely to come here more than once, do yourself a favour and sign up for a Scene card. It's free and you can use it to collect points for free movie tickets. And you can occasionally find promotional codes on the internet for free points. (I originally signed up because I had a code for 1000 free points, which is essentially a free movie!)

I've never really had a bad experience here, but it can get crazy on big opening nights so I tend to wait a few weeks before catching a big new release. Don't wait too long though - they tend to have a fast changeover of movies.

I like this place.. I mean it's huge and centrally located. Of course it's going to be a zoo there and difficult to see hot new releases on opening day. I usually don't go for the opening day stuff and only go on weekdays. If I'm going to go on a weekend, I'll save my movie trip for Metropolis at Metrotown.

I don't get the $7 parking. I've never particularly found it difficult to find street parking downtown (free after 8pm) or skytrain it to Burrard Station and walk to the theatre. But if you want premium parking, then I suppose you would pay the $7.  Tinseltown theatres are free because they need some pull to get moviegoers to come.

The concession stand prices are standard and overpriced like all Cineplex theatres.

So overall, this is a good theatre, nicely laid out, and centrally located. Because of its popularity, I'd avoid it during peak times.  And I do like Bbl T with my show!

I have to admit, this theatre is pretty deluxe. I try my best to avoid this place on weekends when possible, since it gets so crowded and filled with Twi-hards. Last night we had free passes to see the sneak preview of "the Runaways" which was actually better than I was expecting.

We came down early to get good seats but realized that parking is a joke. Thanks to our wonderful government the parking meters go until 10pm, so if you are checking out the early show, you have to run back out to plug your meter or be that obnoxious guy in the theatre texting to add more money to your meter (if you can actually get the damn thing to work.) Or if you feel like throwing your money into the wind you can always park in the underground parkade for $8, which is almost as much as you are paying to see the movie.

But if you really want to feel raped, I highly suggest checking out the snack bar. You will pay as much for your movie as you will for a bag of popped kernels that have been sitting under a heat lamp for 30 minutes that taste like styrofoam. Sound delicious? Well it is, especially after you grease those nuggets up with some extra butter! Don't forget to make it a combo by adding a humongous drink and some candy, then you can get free refills on your popcorn and drink, if you ever happen to finish them. The trick is, if you dare someone to finish the popcorn and drink, be prepared for them to annoy you during the movie five times because they will need to use the facilities. So daring someone to eat it all isn't actually as funny as you think it may be.

Okay enough ranting, the goods on this place: the screens are huge so it doesn't matter where you sit in the theatre because all of the seating is on a slope, which means you'll have a good view no matter what. You will never have to worry about somebody with a fat head sitting in front of you again! There are also several theatres so there are a variety of movies playing, and the location of the theatre is great since its in the downtown core, so there's lots of things you can do when the show is over, like have dinner that isn't popcorn.

As far as multiplex theatre's go, I figure you should go big or stay home. If I am going to pay $12.50+ to watch a movie on the big screen, I want to enjoy big screen action. Oh ya, I said it. You know my guilty pleasure now: Hollywood explosions, fight scenes and car chases. The more fire, the better. Light up that screen!

This theatre is the biggest and best. It's comfortable for long-legged action dates (a girl can't watch helicoptors blow up mid-flight on her own) and it shows all the lastest action flicks. Well, I guess it shows all the latest Hollywood blockbusters, full stop. But why go to the big screen to watch comedy, or worse (puke) romantic comedy? If you must, save those flicks for your home TV.

I'm telling you, when X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the A-Team hit the screens in 2009, this is the place to get some action. And what's better than getting action from Hugh Jackman?

(The only acceptable answer to that question is action from Jason Statham)

Formerly Paramount, Scotia Bank Theatre is the largest in the city and the sure spot for anything new.  This theatre has been incarnated and reincarnated in all major Canadian cities.  Expect to find all new releases here, it's multitude of levels ensures large capacity.  But, as one may expect, the prices are inane and insane.

I spend as much on movie, popcorn and a drink as I would going out for some casual beers.  More a fan of being social then watching a screen in silence, I tend to opt for the beers,

Great theater. Don't see why so many people dislike it it because is it what it is: a full-on chain theater. However, it does a spectacular job of being just that.

If it did a poor job of being a chain theater (i.e. no popcorn, messy floors/bathrooms, lack of choices, unsafe environment, etc) then a low rating might warrant.

But it's a great theater. Centrally located. Excellent choice of food (KFC, Burger King, Taco Bell, Yogurt, Coffee, Popcorn, Candy, blah blah blah).

My wife and I have already visited twice, and we'll be back for many more.

This is quite a good theatre as well, just like Tinseltown, but minus the reclining seats *sniff :(

For some reason, they don't seem to play all the newcoming movies and sometimes I find that the movie I want to see is not playing there.

It is generally clean. The theatres are large and quite nice as well. Again minus the reclining chairs :(.

Concession stands are overpriced, just like any other theatre.

But word of advice.. If you are a movie fanatic such as myself. Go online and sign up for the SCENE card.. It's free!!! Plus you collect points for every movie you see. I think now it's 10 movies and you get one free. Hey it's a lot, but it doesn't expire so use it whenever you go. Best part is, if you are buying from concession you get 10% off of the highly priced food!  (which barely makes a difference but better than nothing ha ha) So yes, you can use it to buy popcorn, Burger King, Taco Bell, and KFC!... oh and bubble tea and icecream ;)

I came here one night with my boyfriend (we were visitors to BC) and it was a nice break to watch a movie.

The child size popcorn, soda and Kinder egg combo was a perfect size for me for $7.00 and I love that they were nice and sold me the child size (sometimes in the U.S. they don't sell kids sizes to adults) because half the time I can't finish a regular sized popcorn.

There is also a Taco Bell in here as well!

    :)

Another enigma sitting below a set of apartment condos in downtown Vancouver, the Scotiabank Theatre is surprisingly huge and also has the added advantage of being close to IGA and Japadog...should popcorn and mystery frozen 'yogurt' not do it for you.

The theatres themselves are a great size, they often show major blockbusters here, and more people can fit in the theatres than seemingly in the hallways and common areas of the theatre, but because of the 2nd floor, this overcrowding is generally limited to the ticket area.  The theatre shows ten plus movies at any given time as well as special screenings. Prices run $12.50 for age 14 and over to $8.95 for children and seniors.
