It's a bit schizophrenic -- Southwestern/Mexican by day and Italian by night -- but the food is always good and interesting.  We have enjoyed both.

Most recently it was a "redemption" salad and very tasty grilled romaine, followed by a ravioli and pasta pestore.  We both thought the pastas were either cooked a little too al dente or the dough was too heavy but the flavors were crisp and lively.  The green chili apple pie for dessert is very good, but the portion is huge so be forewarned.

On earlier lunch excursions we ave enjoyed tacos and enchiladas.

So, decide which cuisine you want and plan accordingly.

This place is not family friendly...at least it wasn't friendly to my family.

To cap off a gloriously beautiful day on the Orcas Island my husband and I, along with our happy-go-lucky infant and camping buddies, asked the locals where we could get some good Mexican food on the island.  We were directed to "Chimayo".  Once we arrived we found that "Chimayo" was a daytime operation and in the evening it transforms into an Italian restaurant.  We thought this was strange but our options were limited since evening dinner spots were sparse on the island.  We settled to eat at "Sazio Notte," besides Italian food was our second choice for dinner that evening.

When we walked into the restaurant we were greeted by a reluctant waitress who made it seem like we needed a reservation to sit down and eat... due to her strange reaction to us walking in we wondered if we were under-dressed.   The waitress left and came back, saying it was "okay" and seated us.  What was the problem, we wondered?  Packed house?  Do we look homeless?  The restaurant didn't seem fancy enough for a dress code and the menu was moderately priced.

We were then seated in the back of the restaurant and I was asked by the waitress how old my baby was, and then was offered a highchair for her which I accepted.

We weren't dressed like hobos or anything, but we had been camping the past two days so we were wearing sweatshirts, baseball caps and the like.  Who cares?  Aren't these places used to people walking in from a long day of outdoor happenings?  We had money to throw at this place if they would have treated us right.  As my husband and friends ordered drinks and appetizers I left to change my daughter in the bathroom.

When I returned from changing my baby, everyone was in a great mood since they were enjoying their drinks and beginning to fill their bellies with bread as they waited for the appetizers on their way (we were so hungry from a long day hiking in the sun)!  My baby was happy and having fun babbling and trying to interact with us (smiles, giggles and da-da's) and the waitress asked once again if I needed a high chair and I said "yes please."  She disappeared again and instead of coming back with a high chair she said "I feel bad telling you this because I am a mom, but can you please walk the halls with your baby."  She said it as if someone else was making her tell me this and the look on her face revealed fundamental guilt.

So...she asked me to leave the restaurant because my baby was talking and laughing?  I was so shocked and taken aback that I didn't know what to say and automatically stood up from my seat and took my baby out of the restaurant.   My baby was laughing and babbling..not crying.  The volume wasn't louder than what it would be if a group of friends were enjoying dinner together and laughing. I could understand her request if she was screaming and crying.  My instinct was to leave this place if my baby and I were not welcome in our natural state.

My husband and friends were so offended that they retrieved us from outside and we cancelled our order.  We wouldn't have been able to enjoy ourselves.   The rest of the weekend this restaurant was the butt of our jokes. Unbelievable.

Sorry to be contrarian, but this was such a big fail on so many things. We were there for lunch, so Mexican food. We ordered burritos, rice and beans and the cheese quesadillas for kids. The quesadillas were hard to spoil, being cheese slapped on tortillas. The rice and retried beans were just that, vegetarian choice. The burritos were, well not really burritos - no rice, no beans. Instead the chicken burrito had something like cole slaw, and shredded unseasoned chicken. There was a generous helping of chicken, but quite tasteless. The veggie burrito had many veggies, but kind of boiled. Again no rice or beans.

The service was seriously off. The singular person at the register was not much help. Se kept sending me to a locked restroom, insisting someone was inside. When she brought our food she spilled almost all chips on the table. Then she asks if we're ok with it! We were too nice to ask her to fix it. Everything else is self serve, water, which was absent for a while, silver, which was scattered around. The only good thing was a blazing fireplace. Then for "keeping costs low" you have to bus your table, but there is no clear space or arrangement. Everyone was lost. It's amazing what passes for good food on the island.

Is the food fresh and delicious?  Absolutely.  We each had the house pasta--husband with artichokes, me with cauliflower--and it was incredible.  Each dish was rich without being overbearing, and the flavors were all perfectly balanced.
Linda, our hostess, was fabulous--smart, fun, friendly, and welcoming.

Ate lunch here twice. Wonderful and fresh food. Mexican food with deliciousness galore!
Then we stopped by for dinner and much to our surprise, there is only Italian food at night. We had a group of 8 that they accomodated beautifully. Dinner is 20-25 a plate, but very gourmet. Lots of attention to detail and also was attentive to making sure several at our table had there dishes 'customized' to their dietary issues.
Grilled trout and grilled romaine lettuce were appetizers we ordered that were new to us. Yum!
Everybody at our table left satisfied and very impressed. Chef even came out to chat with us on how we liked the dinners. We will be back! Keep up the good work here! Would like to see a hard cider ale added to the beer menu :)

Chimayo is a little Mexican food cafe on Orcas Island. I was visiting the island for a wedding and wanted something different than the standard "wedding food," so I thought Mexican food would be a good idea.

Boy, was I surprised. The food was delicious, which completely surprised me, considering the location. I ordered the nachos with extra jalapeños (I like it hot) and the carnitas. The nachos came on a huge plate. The chips were crispy and they used real cheese -- none of the stuff that comes through a pump. The carnitas were nice and tender, the guacamole was homemade, and the beans and rice were just right. Overall, an excellent choice for a casual meal.

The only two downsides that keep Chimayo from getting 5 stars: the jalapeños were from a can instead of fresh and since it was late summer, there were little wasps buzzing around the outside patio (those pesky little buggers). Otherwise, good food for a good price.

We stayed up on Orcas for two nights and went there for lunch (mexican) both days.  I got the chicken burrito with spicy black beans on a burrito and it was quite tasty.  My wife got the roasted veggies and spicy black beans on a burrito (vegan style, i know, she's crazy).  She really enjoyed it.  I would go back and I would recommend it.

We came here for a special rehearsal dinner for my friends' wedding.  The owner closed down the whole restaurant for our party, and they were very accommodating when a third of the guests were delayed due to ferry problems.

But the best thing about this place was the FOOD! They used local and farm fresh ingredients like fava beans with GORGEOUS farm fresh egg yolks on top. The honey ice cream the chef made was divine. I'd recommend this place to anyone, and if you're looking for a place for your rehearsal dinner or special party - this is it!

Great service, delicious food, and they were so great to our young kids. The bread is delicious!  I had the halibut special, and I was so happy with it. The portion sizes were just perfect too. There was also a great selection of wine as well. If you're at Orcas Island, definitely stop by Chimayo!

Meh. Stopped in for lunch. I understand it's not the "busy season" but they made me feel like serving me was a big inconvenience. Sorry to impose on you by spending money in your establishment. Food just OK -- certainly not good enough to treat me like I was some kind of jerk. Won't be going back.

With my husband growing up in New Mexico, we knew we had to try this place! Especially with the reviews before us.

We had a large group, which they did accommodate quite quickly. We moved the tables ourselves, but they had given the okay. We ordered our meals, most of us ordering the burritos. My husband asked if the green chilies were in fact from New Mexico, but the girl said she didn't know. We figured they weren't because N.M. chilies are unlike any others.

We received our food pretty quickly, however, they may have delivered our food to quickly. The quesadillas weren't with melted cheese - the cheese was still looking very shredded and cold.

The chicken burritos, though looking amazing, were FULL of bones. We looked at the menu which stated it was organic, skinless chicken breast. So we do give them the credit for not stating that it would be boneless. Also there was dark meat in the burrito - not from a breast.

One of the gentlemen in our group saw them using chicken from a can -- not sure if it was truly organic chicken or not.

The pork had raving reviews from everyone in the group that ate it. Hopefully this was just an off day, but when some of our group that hadn't been with us at lunch went back later that evening, the restaurant had closed it's door for dinner unexpectedly. Not sure what had occurred.

We attended a private dinner here for a friend's wedding (rehearsal dinner) and it was outstanding!

The restaurant and chef Bill Patterson took hold of the dinner and made it super special and super delicious. The whole meal was done family style around the various tables, which made it feel intimate, casual, and low pressure allowing us to have a good time not worrying about a big hoopla.

    The courses:
First: Beluga lentils, fava beans, shaved parmesan, and farm-fresh egg yolks. Super fresh, local, and really good. I love lentils and this dish combined some great ingredients together into awesomeness. The egg yolks added a rich, unctuousness to the dish while the favas made it fresh and summery. This course was paired well with a dry rose wine.

Second: Roasted pork, carrots, fennel, and broccolini over risotto. Mmm, FATTY PORK goodness. The creamy risotto paired excellently with the roasted pork and vegetables. I loved it and ate too much. We also had a Chilean Pinot Noir that was outstanding.

Third: Citrus/honey ice cream with flowers and raspberries. Yummy, summery ice cream served with edible flowers. Yay!

First off, I think the location's wrong. We entered from North Beach Rd and then wound our way through the mini mall to what I think is the front door, but looks like the back. I think there may be another entrance on A St.

The service was good, and the decor fun, but the food was only so-so. I liked the chili-lime popcorn instead of the usual chips and salsa, though it seems a little cheap. Our queso fresco taquitos were fine, but nothing special - could've used some flavor. His steak was well-prepared and came with a nice sauce, but the side of veggies was floating in oil. ick. I had the "crab-cod cake over greens" special. The flavors were nice, but the texture of the cakes was off - too dry. Also, the "greens" weren't cooked greens (which would've been nice, especially with a little garlic, chili, and lime), but plain salad greens - with no dressing, sauce, or additional anything. Overall, the meal was rather bland and dry. Too bad, given the great ingredients underneath.

To me, Chimayo was a nice experience, but just not worth the money. Sorry, guys, but you wouldn't survive in a major city without working on the details a bit. I think next time we'll save some dough and get burgers at the Lower Tavern.

What a wonderful restaurant! Festive decor and amazing food! Owner Karen is such a sweetheart. Loved Becky and the chef too! Innovative and delicious dishes. We ordered the following:
    Crab enchiladas
    Sirloin
    Queso ravioli
    Tres leches cake

All to die for! Excellent food, service, ambiance. Didn't get a chance to try it, but heard they have great lunch as well! What a gem!

Chimayo has been my absolute favorite place for lunch since I was 9 years old. Yes it has changed hands but the current chef/owner is just as fabulous and committed to high quality ingredients and flavors.  Everything is always fresh and delicious.   My all time favorite is the Enchurito with chicken or their housemade mexi-meat alternative, or a combination of both.  I also love their Redemption salad with toasted pumpkin seeds, rice and black beans and a cumin-lime vinaigrette.  Still haven't tried the new Mediterranean-inspired dinner menu, but Bill is a food magician and I'd trust him to cook my last meal.

WOW!! Hands down a really awesome dinner! My husband and I got a lot of recommendations to try Chimayo and we were not disappointed. That night, the chef had a special Mediterranean menu so we had a really amazing panzanella salad which was one of the best panzanella I have ever had in my life...we had a chili pepper stuffed with goat cheese appetizer which was divine...and a pasta linguine..and a chile relleno..and a chili apple pie cobbler thingy which didn't really taste like anything but apples but it was also very delicious. I basically left a very happy woman!

We just had a phenomenal meal here.  The roasted tomato gizpacho with cucumer-mint sorbet was unbelievable.  Entrees were solid (fish tacos) to excellent (juicy roasted chicken with roasted peppers and tasty polenta).  Casual atmosphere, everyone who worked there was happy and nice (unlike the treatment we had at Cristina's).  Go here!

Beware -- this restaurant changed management recently, and has really hit the skids.  It used to be our family's favorite restaurant on Orcas -- we raved about how perfectly they cooked their chicken, and the menu was always full of interesting and creative choices.  When we returned this year, we were presented with a laminated lunch menu (at dinnertime) listing Taco Bell-style entrees, except without the Taco Bell style prices.  Worse, when I asked the waitress whether there had been a change in management -- which really was quite obvious -- she flat-out denied it, claiming in full-on bareface fashion that the menu had been the same "for the past several years."  I was annoyed enough to want to give the place one star, but I tend to reserve that rating for establishments whose cuisine results in hospitalization.  This was just squarely, overwhelmingly mediocre.  Sic transit.  We'll miss the place that was.

Has been very good casual (New)Mexican food.  I love the carnitas, although they are a bit on the salty side (which I like, but you may not).  Tortilla soup is excellent ( but a  bit spicey - you have been warned).

However, this restaurant is changing hands (August 2009), so we will have to see how the new management does with the place...

I am glowing after my meal at Chimayo. My friend and I hiked 9 miles up and down Mt. Constitution today and found ourselves fiending for a properly spiced and hearty meal. Chimayo is where we got it. From the moment we walked in we felt very at ease and welcome - our waitress was SUPER chill. I had the carnitas plato. The carnitas were very skillfully cooked - a crunchy finish on the sides of the meat, yet very tender and moist otherwise - sort of how carnitas might be if they were served by god himself? It came on a beautifully arranged plate with good flour tortillas and an excellent spicy green salsa, perhaps a tomatillo. Really well-put together plate of food with subtle and unexpected twists and sauces. Awesome. We finished with an aztec (aztec on account of the green chiles and cinnamon) apple pie with ice cream. It was crispy and amazing.

A+ for Vibe, Imagination, Execution, and Service.
