Not only are their pies excellent but don't forget their entrees like their chicken pot pie, sandwiches, soups and their specials. There's a good reason why they charge a bit more than other places yet the place is still hopping all the time. Did I mention they have a great cinnamon roll?

We went for a walk to Ambleside the other day. I was craving a nice brunch a remembered this place, a couple of blocks away from the beach.
It is small, don't expect a restaurant, it is just a bakery/pie paradise with some tables for customers to sit.
The service here is good! I was helped by a girl on the counter, she was happy, smiled and answered all my questions about the food.
The place was packed so we kinda had to hunt for a table to sit.
We got the breakfast sandwiches. They use the bread they make there (so guaranteed it is fresh!), they put an omelette inside with a really good sauce (it is a mix of sundried tomatoes and pesto...and oh man! I did love that sauce!!!) and then you have the option of adding either ham or avocado to the sandwich. I have to admit it was delicious but small :( and they go for around $12 each.
This place has the best homemade pies in the north shore! are they cheap? No they aren't! I believe a pie is about $25 to $28 and just a slice goes for around $6.
Are they good? YES!!!! Heaven of yuminess!
Their menu also offers omelettes, soups and other desserts.
I think this is a great place to stop by when hanging out in the area, maybe to grab a nice coffee/tea and of course, a piece of pie!.
Why don't I give them 5 stars? well, I think it is a bit overpriced and they charge for coffee refill.
5 stars for the pies and 4 stars for the prices...average: 4 1/2 stars!. -

I was eager to try this place after reading a few reviews. Based on the food I give it 4 stars. I ordered the chicken pie with a cup of split pea and ham soup while my boyfriend ordered the grilled chicken with basil sandwich. I actually got served the tortiere instead of the chicken pie but I didn't notice till I took the first bite, I didn't say anything though because I didn't want it to be dumped in the garbage. The tortiere's crust was amazing! So flaky and buttery. The filling was just ok though, a bit on the salty side and nothing special. The split pea and ham (although i didnt see or taste ham) was delicious, bold in flavour and the addition of fresh dill was a very nice touch. My boyfriend's sandwich was also very good, a bit on the salty side too but great flavours otherwise. I would say paying $12.25 for it was a bit of a stretch though. Because we figure we'll probably not be returning to this area for awhile, we took home a slice each of the blueberry pie and the lemon buttermilk. Both were very good, same flaky and buttery crust. Blueberry filling was cinnamony and just sweet enough. Lemon buttermilk tastes kind of custardy/eggy which I personally like.
Like others mentioned, the prices are pretty high here but for a once in awhile treat it's really not that big of a deal. I'm sure many of us have spent more on crap food from chain restaurants. What bothered me about the place is the seating arrangement. It was like someone just shoved as many tables and seats as possible into the space with no regard of how much space a person actually needs to get around. The lineups to the cashiers block part of the seating area too which makes it even more crowded and uncomfortable. It's a bit of a hazard really and I'm surprised the city lets them operate like that. Their arguement is that they are an independant company and thats just how they roll. If they don't care about the comfort of their patrons well whatever then.
All in all, if you enjoy a slice of pie this is a great place to get it. I might suggest you get it to go though! -

When life give you lemons, make.....
Pie.
Stopped here for a piece.
Heard it was supposed to be good.
Pie Company, you know.
But no merry pie making grannies here.
Had a piece of the lemon buttermilk.
I wish I would have ordered something else.
Maybe fruit pie would have been better.
I really didn't feel there was anything exceptional about it....except the price.
Yes, you will need to pick some money from your money tree (you know the one growing next to your lemon tree) in order to eat here.
The breads, Nanaimo bars, muffins and other pastry items in the front case looked good.
Tip #1: Bring some happy pills and combat gear.....you are going to need them to endure the ordering/seating experience which can be summed up as cramped, crowded, cacophonic and claustrophobic. If you end up sitting at the tables where people come in and line up, they hover above you like pumas watching you eat..... And....if you are unsuccessful in stalking a table like I was, don't bother with the stools at the counter unless you have an @$$ the size and shape of a sushi board. Really.
Tip #2: If you have any happy pills left at the end of it all.....give them to the serving staff....I know it's a tough job, but seriously a little smile goes a long way;
Tip#3: Read the sign at the counter.
If you really have to give in to your pie craving, take it to go. -

The pies at Savary Island are excellent! Flaky shell/crust and high quality/quantity of filling, I can't get myself to let go of the blueberry pie and try their other flavors. However, if it weren't so pricey and cramped, I would go there more often.

Few things in life give me as much pleasure as "homemade" Apple Pie with Vanilla Ice Cream. Heaven on a plate IMHO.
Savary Island makes one of the best Apple Pie's I've ever had the pleasure of stuffing my face with. It's so good, I refuse to share my slice when I go with others. Want a bite? Order your own.
If apple isn't your thing - all the pies are good. Not often can one say something like that with confidence, but here it just rolls off the tongue.
They also make a phenomenal Chicken Pot Pie, the Chicken Pesto sandwich is miniscule but super delish, and their Carrot Cake is pretty great.
Are the pies expensive? Sort of. I'd say these pies are good value on the Taste/Value scale (modeled after Barney Stinson's Hot/Crazy scale). -

In the desert world there is no more ancient and epic battle waged than that of Cake vs. Pie.
Normally I find myself located squarely in the Cake camp - what can I say, I love frosting!
That my loyalty to cake is subject to change is based solely on the efforts of the people behind the counter at the Savary Island Pie Company, one of West Vancouver's true gems. This family-owned bakery and licensed restaurant cafe offers fantastic baked goods including fresh bread (their olive oil Italian loaf is, unquestionably, one of the best loaves you can buy in the Lower Mainland), scones and muffins, brownies and fruit squares as well as a fantastic assortment of organic pies made with fruits sourced from local farmers.
Savary Island is very popular amongst locals and almost always crowded with people eating inside or grabbing something to-go. The atmosphere in the restaurant is reflective of its familial beginnings and one has the feeling of being in a warm, comfy-cozy kitchen environment when stopping in to dine. I have tried many things on the menu (their sandwiches are enormous, perfect for sharing) and it is one of those rare establishments that is consistent and reliable and everything is always delicious and better than you expect it to be. Their coffee is fantastic and also available for purchase (as are their jams) that you might enjoy it at home.
On a recent visit I thoroughly enjoyed the daily soup (curried carrot) paired with a slice of chicken pot pie. The rich filling was utterly satisfying and the pastry was, of course, divine. Of the pies, my favourite has to be the raspberry -blueberry, though the strawberry- rhubarb runs a close second. I can not stress enough how good these pies are. Aside from the fruit fillings being fantastic, it is the pastry that truly stands out. It is rich, crisp, buttery, flaky; probably better than anything you can make at home. The pies (and everything they sell) are made by hand in-store and come from "a secret family recipe." They are best enjoyed fresh, warm, and with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. -

Savary Island or PIRATE BAY????
This place is SUPERB...but the line-up and seating can be absolutely stifling!!!
Crammed disorganized seating, slow till and service, complete pandomonium, more employees than customers....but survive the clamoring and the SKY HIGH prices where you are completely FLEECED (2 sandwiches coffee and pie -$40!)
I'm absolutely confounded at the seating....it seems like 80% operations and 10% seating and 10% walking room - CRAZY LET ME BREATHE!!!!
Dare I say, with the aging population of west van, if the paramedics were ever called in they would never be able to get into that place on a busy afternoon.
YOU HAVE AMAZING PIE to Savor!!! BUT.... Clausterphobic, crammed, communal seating and most times glacial service are HUGE turnoffs.
Go here if you have 2 hours to spare, lots of money and patience which is apparently the recipe for Savory Island's success in West Vancouver! -

They make great pies.
I love great pies.
I was able to get their great pies delivered via Stongs.
Almost every Saturday nite, we had one of their pies.
I loved their Strawberry Rhubarb Pie.
I loved their Apple Pie.
I loved their Blueberry Pie.
Add some Ben and Jerry's Vanilla Ice Cream and you have some heaven. For an even better slice of heaven, put the pie in the oven for a bit first.
Oh and read the ingredients. These pies only have the good stuff and no jjjijfjrefjjefijwifjwjocate ingredients you've never heard of. -

For years my family has indulged in their tasty pies without me knowing about all the other goodies they have to offer.
Since having my first lunch at Savary about 6 weeks ago, I must have been in there 6 times since. They have the yummiest sandwiches! Their all day breakfast sandwich makes my life worth living. The soup has also been known to blow my mind.
Rasberry ruhbarb pie, carrot cake, nanaimo bars... I'm going to gain at least 10 pounds this summer. -

Let me say that the food here is amazing. Sandwich and soup are fantastic but very pricey! $20 for one sandwich and one bowl of soup. (although that is large enough to split.
As a side note. I think it's really cheap and petty that they charge $0.80 for coffee refill. Every other breakfast/lunch cafe in the city will give eat in customers free refills. Why so petty Savary Island?? I'm tempted to give fewer stars for this but the food really is great.
Also, the staff seem to be annoyed by the crowds. And it's always busy on the weekends. -

This place made my week!
Venturing out to West Vancouver on a gloious Sunday afternoon, we had to come to Savary Pie. It was both our first times. Once I saw the line up out the door, I knew that this was a good idea. Here, you order your food up front, find a table, and then they bring the food to you.
I love the atmosphere of the place-a open bakery in the back, menus written on large chalkboards, large communal wooden tables, and just an overall warm comfy feeling that I'd love to experience over and over again.
Their menu consists of many breakfast and lunch items-sandwiches, soups, omelets. We kept on seeing them bring out these delicious looking sandwiches and large bowls of soups, but we simply could not eat any of that since we had just finished brunch. Noticed that their prices weren't cheap though-$10 for a sandwich and then an additional $6 for soup?
Of course, we were here to try the pies. It's around $5 a slice, which is very reasonable. We got the traditional apple pie, as well as the lemon buttermilk pie with berries. I took one bit of the lemon one and was amazed. Smooth, creamy lemony buttery flavour....it was soo good. Not too tart, not too sweet, just perfect. Then the warm apple pie: a light brown sugar top, sweet apple filling, and just amazing.
As the people around us all ate sandwiches, we devoured our pies quickly. The sandwiches looked so good that I had to buy a half loaf of their mulitgrain bread just so I could make my own sandwich for lunch this week. Verdict of the bread? There's nothing like freshly baked bread.
I can't wait to return to try all their other pies (blueberry pie, anyone?), and perhaps one of those tempting breakfast sandwiches. -

Review from Stevie C.
My friend recommended me to try out their pies with vanilla ice-cream. I bought a whole blueberry pie for $27, whoooo expensive if you compare it to Costco apple pies which are $10. But when I tried it I was like wow, it tastes like my sister's pie pretty good! This is some great quality stuff and was very impressed. Interested in trying out other Savory Island items...
Apple pie- Not bad, not bad. But I was more impressed by the Blueberry pie.
Breads- Whoa, I tried Italian(salty but good), Rye(I like!), and Raisin Rye(not bad). I'm a bread person so all tasted pretty good. My favorite is Rye. -

I went to Savary Island today for lunch and it was so good! The breakfast sandwich was to die for. I may have even snuck in a slice of buttermilk pie for desert.
mmmm mmm yummy in my tummy!

I wish we lived closer . . . sooo good
Working in West Vancouver for a week, I was able to try some new lunch spots, and Savary Island was one I stumbled upon on my way to my original lunch destination.
Chicken Pot Pie - wow. Made from local free-range chicken, with a wonderful combination of vegetables and a light and flaky crust. On top of that, their White Bean soup of the day left me wishing I'd asked for a large rather than small bowl.
Seating is limited -- you probably will share a table with others. That doesn't bother me - in fact I like it, but if it bothers you, don't eat in.
The large bustling kitchen in the back is in full view. Amazing selection of pies. Prices are a bit steep.
Whenever I'm on the North Shore, Savary Island will be a regular stop to pick up a pie or two.Listed in: Buried Treasures

Always on the lookout for amazing breads, I find the Savary Island's whole grain breads simply divine. It tastes almost banana loaf like, with grainier texture. Slab on a copious amount of butter and you are on your way to bread heaven.
Their bread is not cheap at more than $5,. But the jumbo loaf is equal to 1 1/2 times of regular loaf.
Love that their apple pie as it is not too sweet or tart, with lick- your- finger- good crust.
If only I have 2 stomachs, would have bought their freshly baked muffins. But then again, I'm already planning my next bread excursion.
Minus half a star for not being able to slice the loaf, their bread is simply too large and grainy for a regular serrated knife.
Minus another half star for their espresso. It tasted too burnt.
Overall, the place is a slice of heaven.Listed in: Breads and co.

Best Pie, Ever.
Best Bread, Ever.
Besides good pie, I'm always on the lookout for great vegetarian options. They do a fantastic lentil soup, and a grilled tomato sandwich that is pretty much a BLT without the B. Service can get a bit testy but completely forgiven because it can get so incredibly busy and if-you-don't-have-your-order-ready-when-it's-time- to-order-then-the-entire-line-will-be-annoyed-at-y ou-so, order already! Order your lunch, your pie, your loaves to go (just don't get back in line). Plus, you have to love that they play Fleetwood Mac without trying to be being ironic.Listed in: Best Vancouver Vegetarian, Top Restaurants

Ah, Savary Island Pie Company. A cool interior that transports me into what could be my grandfather's den. Sit down and relax into one of the solid wood tables and chair filled with paraphernalia and picture frames all around. On both sides of the walls are large chalk boards highlighting their menu and specials.
The main event of course are the delicious, tasty and savory fruit pies - organic apple, blueberry, raspberry rhubarb, strawberry rhubarb, and lemon buttermilk with berries. The top crust is flaky, while the bottom has the old classic shortbread crust. Although I must admit I'm a French Apple Pie lover with it's crumbly brown sugar topping, this American Apple Pie version is definitely a winner. The pie slices range from $4.50-$5.00 with a further option for whip cream $0.75 and vanilla bean ice cream $1.50.
But don't just stop there. They have baked goodies like Chicken Potpie at $8.00 a slice. As well as their Grilled Chicken Basil sandwich at $12.00. The prices for the serving size are a bit steep. This is West Vancouver after all. I recommend ordering the meals with a side of Caesar salad for another $4.50 to make a complete meal. Otherwise, they will serve the slices in a very small plate, bare and alone.
Which brings me to my gripe. At these prices, there was no fanfare preparation or plating. No included side salad or greens of any kind.
Seating is limited as the space of the restaurant is occupied for their baking. But there isn't much of a build-up on a lazy weekend. People do come over to take home a whole pie of fruit ($24-26) or chicken potpie ($40).
A nice overall taste experience which will make me come back over and over again. -
Review from Allen W.
As you can see from other reviews, this place makes excellent pies (better than grandma's)!
The downside is that with popularity comes long lines and frenzied staff. The shop can become a bit claustrophobic with tables and chairs pressed tightly together, creating landlocked areas where patrons seeking to leave are held hostage on the far side of the room.
I prefer to grab and go -- take a slice to the seawall and watch the sunset. -
Review from Vanessa G.
I have been eatting there pies for as long as i can remember. Blueberry, Strawberry Rhubarb, Raspberry.. they are all evil yet so delicious and fresh. There other treats are all to die for.
I had a Blueberry Omelette there the other day and the egg was thin like a crepe filled with ricotta, blueberries, maple syrup, and shredded light parm on top.. i will be thinking of this everyday for a long time. . YES!
Served with french bread, butter and and jam which complimented the meal. I was very full but happy.
I do think it is a little expansive, but it is quality. -

I've had this place recommended to me on numerous occasions. Finally, driving by one afternoon we decided to grab lunch. It was full with a line up to the door, but we were hungry and had no immediate alternative, so decided to wait. Luckily the que moved quickly, and we both ordered Chai lattes and a bowl of the fresh made soup; I tried cream of potato, and my partner the tomato, both ordering grilled cheese to accompany.
Seating was definitely limited and we had to share a table with another pair of diners . This is not something I mind at all since it's a friendly crowd, but take out may be a better option (picnic at the park/beach 5 minutes away?) if you wan't more intimate conversation.
In the higher price range for sure, but the most satisfying lunch I've had in quite some time. A return trip is planned to try some of the pies.Listed in: Best Brunch

Been coming here since uni... wow ! flashback.... I think back then it was adjacent to the Bean, across the street... Still remember the awesome cin buns and the blueberry teacakes...
Then it moved across the street to a bigger location...
Breakfasts are awesome... and the decor is great - kinda westcoast "cabinsy"... so are all kinds of baked goods...
But the place is known for awesome pies... pies... and pies.....
All kinds of berries +/- rhubarbs... lemon pies....
Their pies kick ass... period..
Also... rumor has it that Elvis comes here.... Costello that is... -

Simply THE best grilled cheese sandwich on the planet:)
I cross large bodies of water to eat them as often as I can:)
Ask for it on Multigrain it seems like cheese soup on football sized bread. They make yummy soups as well! I often try to order something different but I simply can't as this sandwich is too perfect.
It is THE lunch stop of choice on the Judi Tour :) -

Savary Island deserves five stars. It makes the best pies, awesome breads and muffins, and rich, flavorful lunches. How do the West Van ladies coming from or going to their yoga classes eat here and stay so thin?
Seating is limited and the place gets crowded.
The asking price is a buck above alike places, but I can't think of a better use for your buck. -

My boyfriend and I shared a piece of apple pie, which was no doubt amazing. But wow, the grilled cheese was the best we've ever had! So yummy! The place is super cute and quaint, but we got our stuff to go and it wasn't too busy, so we didn't deal with any of the madness that some others have mentioned. We did have to wait kind of a while for our food though. Oh and if you can find a parking spot on the street, it's free for two hours!

Review from Louisa D.
Maybe when my partner and I wentto a restau rant with "pie" in the title, and ordered a mixed green salad (me) and yogurt, granola, and blueberries (her) we got what we deserved when it was puny and overpriced.
But it was hot. We wanted something light before we had our pie, which sounded and looked mahvelous.
I ordered my salad with chicken and avocado. The chicken was warm. That had not been mentioned on the menu. The avacado was nonexistent. I would returned to the counter to ask for it, but the line had gotten long so I chose to suck it up. (No table service.) Salad quite tasty. Small.
The water we asked for also never appeared. Perhaps it was self-service as well, but I didn't see it anywhere and the counterperson didn't tell us where to get it.
For $7.00, we expected the fruit/granola/yogurt bowl to either be huge, or made of the dreamiest granola and yogurt on the planet.
Nope. Small. Ordinary. Meh.
We'd already spent $22.00 on our wee ladies lunch and didn't feel like risking more on the pies (we're from out of town, didn't know their reputation.)
I'm glad the pies are worth it.
I've learned my lesson. If it says "pie" in the name, don't get salad. -

I know that they call themselves a Pie company....and it is very good. However, they have the most amazing home made soups around. Sometimes I really wonder how they make their soups taste so good...because the ingredients seem too simple sounding to taste half as good.
When my mother flies into town it's the first place she wants to go to..."Let's get soup at that pie place." -
Review from Sarah O.
It just hit me today just how expensive this place really was. I don't mind paying the money for great stuff (note: pies), but everything else seems to just be there, simply to cater to a wider range of customers. This morning I ordered the scrambled egg plate, which is literally 3 scrambled eggs and one piece of toast for about $10 plus tax. Eating my eggs made me feel like an elderly person with no teeth, eating hospital food while being bedridden.. it was really not cooked well, and the italian toast that came along with it was.. holy crap, salty as hell. I don't remember when the last time I had so much salt.. it was terrible. And it took a very long time to come out.. Better just stick to the pies here. I even heard one of the workers advise a customer that some of the pastries are NOT good and she shouldn't buy them. Enough said.

This was one very confused and disappointed Aussie who had lunch at the Savary Island Pie Company today.
If you're Australian and someone says 'Pie' you think meat... followed by steak, followed by steak and mushroom, and then steak and kidney, maybe steak and onion, and for 'variety'... chicken.
A tiny space filled with a handful of two-top and a couple of four-top tables as well as one longer farm table, this little breakfast and lunch spot serves up muffins, breads, scones, coffee, sandwiches and of course, PIES, in Vermont-esque surroundings.
Focused on savory and meat, my cohort and I shared a slice of Tourtiere pie. Filled with a mixture of beef, pork and spices I was disappointed that for $8 it wasn't tastier and that it had clearly been nuked in the microwave as the crust and pastry were soggy, rather than buttery and flakey. For an extra $3 you can add soup or a side salad.
I wasn't thrilled with the pie and didn't feel like spending $12 on the Chicken and Basil sandwich, so we inhaled the heavenly scent of fresh bread and headed off in search of more eats.
If I'm in the hood again i'd stop back for a cheese and dill scone ($3.75) or a slice of one of their famous fruit pies ($4.50), but I wouldn't cross the bridge just for lunch at the Savary Island Pie Company. -
Review from Es T.

If I were a song writer or a poet, I would write something deep and meaningful and dedicate it to the flaky, rich, delicious pie crust at Savary Island Pie Company.
There have been days when I have (yes, I confess it) crossed the bridge for a slice of Strawberry Rhubarb pie. The Pumpkin Pie gives new meaning to Thanksgiving.
Brace yourself for a long line up if you show up when everyone else seems to be just as hungry as you are. There is nothing efficient about the service, but the food more than makes up for the wait and aggravation of holding a hot bowl of soup while you wait for a table to clear. The food tastes just as good hunched over and standing at the bar as it does at the sit down farm table.
My top pick for savory food is definitely the Chicken Basil sandwich which will wake up every one of your taste buds. It will have you taking just one more bite even though you still remember (and regret) that "too full" feeling from last Christmas dinner.
They usually have a great soup on offer and the soda bread is the best in Vancouver with a perfect crumb and a moist density that makes any other soda bread seem like an imitation of the real thing. -

Amazing apple pie! It's not cheap, but it is divine. I've also tried their blueberry pie and chocolate cake, but in my humble opinion, the apple wins hands down.
There is an interesting note on the till about how customers need to understand that this is an evolving business. It sort of reads like a manifesto, which I find both fascinating and offputting. I'm clearly missing some history here.
I guess the best advice I can give you given what I've said is to order the apple pie and don't confront the owner. -

A friend of mine told me the secret to the pies at Savary Island is chunks of butter. No wonder the eats here taste so sinfully good!
We stopped in here for lunch and a coffee on a rare north shore excursion. My boyfriend and I shared a chicken basil sandwich ($10) that arrived with more sinful amounts of melted cheese. Napkins were needed on this one. The coffee was hot and the perfect warm up cure to the drizzle outside.
The menu, on the whole, is pretty narrow -- just a few salads, sandwiches, and breakfast items. But it's all well done. Feeling really hungry? Order a whole chicken pot pie and its flaky-crust goodness for $35.
Of course, we saved room for dessert: my favorite strawberry rhubarb. A slice costs a reasonable $4, $5.50 with ice cream. Other options include blueberry, pumpkin, apple, lemon and berry, and raspberry. Savary Island Pie Company will definitely appeal to the sweet-tooths out there!
I'm suddenly really craving pastry... -
Review from Awesta M.
I was introduced to this place through a friend. We were just having appy's at her place and I pretty much devoured the Italian bread. It was so good. They put these little flecks of salt on top of this "oh so soft and delcious bread." It was like carb crack. I couldn't get enough and once I found out where she got it from immediately went to West Van and bought a loaf for me and a girlfriend.
I am now constantly plotting reasons to cross the bridge so that I can get my hit. But I'll be honest with you, it's so worth it!
Here are the minuses about this place, I prefer my pies from Tartine. I know I'm saying something sacrilegious
The other issue is the crazy lines and waits at this place. You've got to be willing to commit to coming to this place on a weekend and not be deterred because the lines get longer and not shorter and finding a place to sit is no walk in the park. Elbows are used...shamelessly. -

Best coffee room in West Vancouver. Rustic vibe. Great pies, bread and baking. Service is typically surly and detached though.
