The ramen here is my favorite because of it's close proximity to my school. I also enjoy having my favorite magazine to read while I wait for my next class to start. This makes Santouka perfect in every way.
Service is never an issue here and the staff is always nice! (Thank You) They are quick and consistent at getting you the food that you ordered. I never have to worry about being late to class when I come here. It's relaxing knowing that I can engulf myself into a magazine that I can't even read. Throughout a lunch of rapid picture browsing, I get to enjoy a delicious meal of hot ramen. Could lunch get any better? Nahhh..
The quality of food here is always on point! The pork is so delicious, it seriously leaves your mouth watering for days... The noodles are always perfect. They are never too soft and never too hard. Fresh, fresh, fresh! -

Decent ramen. Nothing worth making a special trip over though.
It is cheap and it's located in the middle of a huge Japanese market so you can eat before or after you shop. -

Santouka is my favorite ramen joint in SD. They have pretty good combo meals on the bottom shelf of their display and they have a delicious broth in the spicy miso. If you like the traditional flavors the shiyo is great too.
I would definitely try to get the egg and ask for extra green onions!!! Great substitution for pho if you are hungover....yeah I know drunkies out there are smiling.
Cash only, but if you are BOA there is an ATM for you. While you're here scoop some spicy garlic shrimp chips at the market...freaking fantastic. -

Spicy miso ramen: the soup has beaucoup flavor and development!! I like to order the special pork on the side with extra bamboo shoots. Amazing combo this stuff: umami pork and crunchy/dente bamboo shoots, Mmmmm. Ramen is perfectly made here, I can slurp up a bowl in 2 flat. I would eat here everyday if I could but it's in Sandy Eggo. If you don't like spicy miso broth, you can get the salt ramen which comes with the special pork. Located in the Mitsuwa marketplace, this is a good place to shop and eat Japanese in one building in K. Mesa. I crave this place like I do El Cochinito (Cuban resto in LA).
4 ++ Stars, one less star: There's never enough tables around mealtimes as this place is very popular. This is not a full service restaurant, more cafeteria style. I don't like the broth to get cold while waiting for a seat or a table so the wait for a table is a bit........well, stressful.

This is the best ramen I ever had. I have attempted to try to find another place that matches this in San Diego and I have failed. I have converted 9/10 people to enjoy this ramen including my girlfriend (below) who hates ramen. The price is decent and the service is good. The only problem with this ramen is there are too many other people who enjoy it which makes finding a seat hard during rush hour and it's a cash only place. If this is your first time here, I recommend the Salt Ramen Special Pork Medium Size. Oh, and try the cold soba noodles soup with hot fried shrimp next door. It's good.

Ramen. I crave the cheap 10 cent pack all the time, but this definitely beats it by a landslide.
Located inside Mitsuwa supermarket, and shared by another restaurant, you can look through the glass case of plastic glazed samples of the food to choose which one you want. I got the salted ramen. Broth was really good and flavorful, pork was good, tender and fatty and the ramen was cooked perfectly. Sad to say though, there was not enough pork. Where's the meat?! There was only about 3 slices but I treasured it well by portioning it throughout my ramen.
My friend go the bigger meal and it came with the soy sauce eggs! Delish!
Overall, I would come back. Portions are good, but cash only!! Doesn't work when you only have $5 in your pocket, but luckily I had a friend :) -

I love this place. I work down the street so I love to grab some ramen when I'm burned out on pho. The pork in the ramen is amazing. The only reason this isn't a five star is because it's cash only and it's almost twice the price as pho.

Always in a Mitsuwa market food court. One of the best ramen anywhere you can find a Mitsuwa market. Line is short, lots of seating, and pretty cheap, cash only. You can get a a bowl of ramen and a little rice bowl of your choice for $11. Pretty good deal if you are really hungry. And you don't have to deal with the "restaurant" feel, so you can definitely come alone and grub after work because they close at 8pm!!
My only complaint, the broth is a bit tooo salty for me. It has flavor though, but tons of salt. I end up drinking like a gallon of water after. -
Review from Nida K.
As much as I love eating instant ramen made stove-top, the real thing is way better. I've heard a lot about Santouka Ramen, located inside of Mitsuwa Marketplace, and I finally got to give this Japanese staple a try this past weekend.
I've been on the hunt for the best ramen in SD and to be honest, I don't think I've found it yet. Right after walking into Mitsuwa, Santouka is located to your left in the food court. I kinda felt bad for Kayaba next door because they had no line whatsoever whereas Santouka had a line that never seemed to end. If you don't know what you want to eat, I'm sure the display case with exact replicas of what their bowls look like will help. I love a spicy broth so I just had to go with the Spicy Miso. The bowl looked a little too small for me even though it was a medium so I went with a large ($8.99). I also added an egg and extra naruto to my ramen.
In general, noodle soups should be pretty good on its' own without adding a lot of additional condiments. I felt that the broth was tasty, however, a little too salty for my taste. I know ramen has a ton of sodium in it, but the broth should be balanced out. I was also looking to add some vinegar to my broth, but they told me that they didn't have any. The large size was a good serving, and for someone who doesn't eat very much, I almost finished it. So for someone who eats a lot, a large would be the way to go. You might still be hungry afterwards. This is the second time I've tried a Spicy Miso broth, and I liked the broth at Shinsengumi (http://www.yelp.com/bi...) in LA better. In fact, it's the best ramen I've had in California.
All in all, I enjoyed my food but I think it could've been better. Perhaps, I'll give Santouka Ramen another try but with a different broth.Listed in: Top Ramen

Still the best ramen I've had so far. This time we got a medium karamiso ($7.99+ tax), and medium shio ramen ($7.49+ tax). The hot broth was delicious. The ramen noodles far better than the dried kind. The fatty pork slices were soft and melted in the mouth.
I like the seaweed and bamboo strips in the broth the best, it's tasty and gives it texture. This place is pricey but satisfying.1 Previous Review: Show all »

If ever I did flip out and go postal and find myself
on death row ordering my final meal before taking that
stainless steel ride, the Miso Ramen w/char siu and
egg and ikura on rice would fit the bill. This is
pretty much the only thing I get when I come here and
probably the only thing I ever will because it's THAT
good. The broth alone puts me into a trance state.
Add the tasty char siu and delicious ramen to that
and I am feeling so content - all is right in the world
once again! -

Best ramen in San Diego that I have yet tried. Not
comparable to some of those ramen in Tokyo and Yokohama, but we can experience something closer to them. I've tried Shio, shoyu, miso. I like shoyu the best. My 4 yr old likes ramen only from here. -

The ramen used to be my favorite but I've been visiting less since they close so early and it's cash only. Soup is a little greasy. Still a great ramen place for satisfying an early week night craving.

Santouka is in the Mitsua market. Overall, really good!!!!
I got the large spicy ramen. It was really big. Had lots of meat, a good amount of bamboo, and mushrooms. I came out soo full. The soup was tasty. Not super spicy, but has a little kick. Be careful, it has lots of MSG, so you'll be sure to be tired once finished.
They close at 8, so come early before they close. We got there at 7:30 and we were the last customers. -

La Jolla, CA
Ramen, not the crappy Maruchan kind you used to live off of in college, not Cup O Noodles, but authentic Japanese ramen. I think two things really make this place stand out - the flavorful broth which is oh so tasty and rich (salt flavor by the way). And 1b, the al dente noodles. Chewy, yet not over nor undercooked. A regular bowl is also accompanied by a couple large slices of pork and garnished with green onions, bamboo shoots, mushrooms and what I think is a small red plum. They don't have take out, only accept cash and close at 7:30 pm. None of those facts are a good reason not to go give them a try. Best ramen in SD, if not SoCal, period.

Review from Calvin H.
Best ramen in San Diego. I think this is about as close as it gets to Daikokuya in LA. It's all about the broth here. It's a rich and flavorful pork based broth. I'm sure drinking too much of it will take some years off your life but it's damn delicious. Along with the noodles, the sliced pork belly and partially boiled egg complete the ramen experience.
Just be aware that it's pretty much a food court setup in the Mitsuwa market so seats can be extremely difficult to find at times. Also, it's cash only and the only ATM inside is Bank of America. -

Five Stars
Cash Only, but there is an Bank of America ATM right in front -I wonder if there is a Convenience Fee?
I ordered the Large Spicy Miso Ramen with Extra Pork - $11.30 Tax included. 3 minutes later, I received my steaming bowl of noodle soup. The broth was thick with collagen and tasted perfect. The pork was cut thick and made a perfect complement to the al dente Noodles. I tried eating as soon as I sat down, but the noodles were still a little bit firm, so I had wait a moment for the noodles to get to that perfect texture, but after that I inhale it. It was so hot and spicy that it made me start to sweat. This place has Great Ramen and even better broth.Listed in: RAMEN!

Mmm! Love my ramen! It's definitely one of the best anywhere, really--my first time at Santouka ramen was actually in Torrance, CA and when I found out there was one in SD... STOKED.
You know how there's that one special item on the menu that you try and you like it so much that you never order anything else ever? The shio-ramen (salt broth) is IT for me. :) Basic and delicious! I like to keep things simple anyways!
The broth is wonderful, noodles are great, there's a good amount of toppings (there could always be more, haha, but this is pretty good) and it's served nice and hot! I'm pretty confident in my assessment of ramen just because I eat a lot of it (and not the instant stuff, mind you!) My other fave place is probably Tajima (oh dear, so good as well!), but Santouka is a wee bit cheaper. The toppings are also vary: Tajima offers egg but Santouka has bamboo!--at both places, you can customise for an additional price though. :)
One drawback: CASH ONLY!
Other than that, I can't wait to eat these golden noodles again!

With the popularity of Japanese Ramen on the rise in this day in age, I have been constantly disappointed place after place, asking myself "why would I eat this if I can get pho.. which is a lot cheaper, gives more meat and tastes better!" I have finally been proven wrong!
Santouka Ramen is a little boutique restaurant located inside Mitsua Market on Kearny Mesa Blvd. Right when you enter the market, you are already captivated by the beautiful aroma that is called Ramen. Though seating may be difficult to find, especially when you're dining with more than 2, it is well worth the wait!
Santouka is a perfect example of simplicity coexisting with taste!! My gosh writing this is making me salivate beyond control! In this modern food era, I'm constantly impressed with the development and design of complex foods, yet to be disappointed by pretentious taste. For less than $10, you can order almost all styles of ramen and addition of several rice dishes. Definitely enough food!
What do you get? A VERY tasty broth, a great serving of well-prepared ramen noodles, meats (although you may choose not to..), and assorted vegetables!
All in all..

Okay. I finally pushed myself to go here on the only day off I had this week, so I did. Let me just start off by saying, DAMN, nine minutes since they opened and the place is swarmed (but glad i got there when i got there).
I ordered a large spicy miso ramen and from the reviews I was expecting the broth to be as spicy as mentioned, but then again everybody's taste buds are different and I have a huge threshold for spicy, meaning I can take the heat :P So the second I got my ramen, I immediately digged in because one I was starving and second I've been craving this ramen since I've seen it on yelp! I was waiting for the spicyness to kick but there was no kick, no spice, but I must say the broth was DEEEELICIOUS. The noodles on the other hand weren't my favorite, they didn't look so fresh and they had this processed gunk on each strand of noodle, YUCK! But I dealt with it anyways. Overall, it was A-okay, but I gave the place 4 stars because of the wonderful service at the check-out and the oh so tasty broth, LOL.
I don't know if I'll be coming back to this specific ramen place, but I will be trying others to compare. -

Located within the Mitsuwa food court and definitely one of the better ramens in SD. If you've been to the other Santouka's, then this place is the same consistent and delicious ramen as always.
Beware of the long lines and early closing times and the limited seating
Try the cha shu ramen and the spicy miso ramen. Seriously my favorite ramen.
Overall, if you're looking for consistently good ramen, this is the place to go. Plus you can go grocery shopping afterwards! -

The KMLB lives on...
Kudos to Conrad R. for bringing this to my attention for ramen. Honestly I have worked in the KM area for several years and never knew of this place within the Mitsuwa Marketplace. For starters, bring some cash with you and plan on dining in since they don't offer to go containers.
Honestly I was quite puzzled on what to order, but rest assured they have a display menu for you to decide. If you are craving something delicious but don't want the fanciness of a restaurant this is the perfect spot.
I enjoyed my meal after waiting patiently waiting at my table. Every bite was tasteful and I feel in love with the Pork Bowl! Even the egg was delightful at the end. Good times always discovering something that you'll know to return for a quick lunch.
The fat: It's in Mitsuwa Marketplace then you can go shopping.
The skinny: Hold on to your number!Listed in: Kearny Mesa Lunch Bunch

Best ramen I have ever eaten. Hands down. I have never had ramen that comes close in San Diego. Cha shu miso ramen= love of my life. I don't go there for the ambiance.. It's in the food court of Mitsuwa, which doesn't bother me at all. You're there for business. To eat delicious ramen and that's it. If you want to go eat at a place that has a great atmosphere and is beautiful, it's not the place for you. If you don't mind the ambiance and just want to enjoy delicous food, please eat this ramen.
Remember, it's CASH ONLY. Also, no to go orders. I thought it was annoying at first but doesn't bother me anymore. You get used to it! -
Review from R P.

Back when I was in college, my old friend Takeichi and I used to travel around California while trying every famous Ramen House we could find. We noticed that every county in California seemed to have a different style of Ramen, and that all the other Ramen houses located near each other would attempt to steal and copy each others recipes until practically they all tasted similar. While traveling, we always intentionally avoided SANTOUKA RAMEN booths because it was a generic fast-food chain in Japan that had 100s of locations(kinda like what Starbucks is here in America). Takeichi lived in Japan till he was 16 years old and said that SANTOUKA was so common that no one really thought it was that great, but in America people think it's some kind of rare delicacy. We both favored the independent family-ran Ramen houses that weren't particularly located in a small booth in a corner of a super market. And the thing we always liked better about the independent Ramen houses was how the service was so much better.
Has anyone ever seen an episode of "OH! Super Milk Chan"? You remember how in every episode they would always make fun of people who work at Ramen houses and claim they were all weird, lazy, perverted, pedos, and some were even cross dressers? I was always wondering why they always used to make that strange reference about people who worked at Ramen houses until I actually came to SANTOUKA the other day. Okay..there weren't any pedos or cross dressers working here, but the workers did seem really weird and lazy. I was first in line..actually there wasn't a line at all, so I guess I was just the only customer there. I thought it was odd how there wasn't any customers even though it was noon. Well, I stood at the counter for like 3 minutes before one of the workers decided that he would actually help me. And, he REALLY took his time while walking 3 feet to the counter to help me. After I ordered my Ramen I didn't even have time to find a table to sit at because my Ramen came out immediately. Take in consideration that this is a fast-food chain of Ramen restaurants in Japan, so that's why it comes out so fast. I know it's kind of cool how there is no wait time to get your food, but that also means that the noodles were precooked and just sitting there. At more upscale Ramen houses, the Ramen doesn't come out as fast because they cook the noodles when you order it.
Personally, I think that corporate SANTOUKA should replace all their flesh-and-blood human workers with cybernetic robots or advanced vending machines. Your typical SANTOUKA restaurant is merely a 4 foot by 6 foot hole which was punched into a wall. The hole is usually only big enough to see the face and upper body of the "Ramen man" while he takes your order, a few seconds later a very small bowl of Ramen slides out of that same hole in the wall where the man's face used to be. Do you see how worthless that is to actually employee real people? Corporate SANTOUKA could save millions of dollars a year by replacing the man in the "hole in the wall" with a vending machine(just like those Red Box DVD Machines that replaced the Video Store worker). The most advanced Vending Machines in Japan have Speech Recognition Software built in, and it can actually answer questions which is something the human workers at SANTOUKA apparently can't do! Even the f*cking rice cooker I bought at the electronics department of Mitsuwa Market can answer a question better than the workers at SANTOUKA. And the motherf*cking rice cooker I bought can cook rice, which is another thing the workers at SANTOUKA probably can't do.
Okay, I'm gonna give this place 1 star for the Charsiu tasting better than your average Ramen house. I'm gonna give it another star for preserving the traditional SANTOUKA recipe, and not conforming to the taste of the generic style of San Diego Ramen(which I mentioned at the beginning). But, that's all... -
Review from Kerra A.
After living in Japan for a couple of years...I have not gone back to eating 15 cent packaged ramen. So if you can't afford a plane ticket to experience an authentic bowl of ramen...this is the place to go.
Can never go wrong with the Combo #100 spicy ramen.
CONS:
-cash only
-seating can be a push/shove fight when it gets crowded
-parking lot sucks on the weekend
-a bit pricey for fast food
PROS:
-the food you get looks exactly like the displays
-great tasting food
-it's located inside of Misuwa
-service is fast -

This is some pretty decent ramen. I like that the bowls come in different sizes. I had the spicy miso with pork which was tasty. I missed the egg and the fish cake in there though, and "spicy" meant the broth was red, but not very hot in my opinion. The flavor was good though and the pork was cooked well. Tasty, but I'm not totally wowed.

HANDS DOWN THE BEST RAMEN IN SD!! The only thing I hate is that it closes at 7pm! I always order the Soy Sauce Ramen with the side of Cha-siu and rice. The ramen is just so satisfying, flavorful, and colorful. The service is moderate, but your food is always hot and steamy. What sets this place apart from Tajima or Yakyudori is the broth. It's not too heavy, has the most amazing flavor, and it's just plain delicious! The line gets really long and seating is pretty limited, so try to avoid all the eating rush hour.

Review from Joyce C.
I'm not sure why people love this ramen so much! Maybe it's cause I don't eat pork that I don't enjoy Santouka like everyone else.
I do like that they offer different size bowls - small, medium and large. This last time I went, I opted for a small miso ramen. The miso broth was good, the noodles were chewy but the toppings are lacking in my opinion. One of the best parts of ramen is that soft boiled egg it comes with. Santouka has a hard boiled egg. Nuff said.
Oh and this place is cash only, but there is a BoA ATM right inside Mitsuwa. Really, just not my favorite. I'll come back if someone else REALLY wants it, but I wouldn't come back on my own. -

Not impressed with this the food at all. We wanted to try the Choice Pork Ramen but they were out of it so we ordered the spicy miso ramen with extra pork along with the egg side and a rice bowl with greens (onion, etc.). The side of rice with greens was just OK but the noodles were not great. After tasting the noodles we were not impressed; texture and taste were strange. My husband tasted freezer burn in some of the ingredients in his soup. We didn't/couldn't finish our meal and left.
We will come back to try the sushi next door when they are open (they were closed tonight). This trip was unfortunate since we looked at all of the reviews and were really looking forward to it but in the end Santouka Ramen did not deliver- tonight anyway. -

Wow.
I have to admit, I was scared as hell when I first walked into this place. I had no idea what I was about to try.
Intimidated, I just followed my friends lead and got what she ordered (salted pork?)
And crossed my fingers - and closed my eyes.
I felt so silly because I didn't even know where to start. She passed me some chili flakes and I hesitantly sprinkled some on...mixed it all together...and dove in.
Wow.
What a fantastic combination of flavors! It was like nothing I had ever tried before and I loved it. The broth was delicious!!
I also braved the boiled egg and I am for sure going to make it at home - too good!!
I am so glad I decided to try this fantastic little dish. I'm a huge fan.

OMG RAMEN! Probably the best ramen I've had thus far....delicious ramen with miso broth. Simple, but perfect. I shared the small bowl with my 3-year old niece. She was quickly stuffing the noodles with her hands! She knows good food as does her Auntie!
Cash and sit down only, but worth the $7. GO. -

Legit ramen spot, tucked inside the mitsuwa marketplace. Avoid the lunch rush and try to come a little early. The salt port in my ramen was unbelievably delicious. I could totally eat this every day - if parking wasn't such a mess and the line wasn't so long. They also have a little spicy seasoning on the side to add some kick to your ramen. Portion size may be considered small, but that's a good thing because my fat ass is trying to drop a couple more lbs for summer!

AMAZING ramen! I'm deff a RAMEN lover and this definitely doesn't disappoint me. I always get the spicy ramen. They have different sizes and of course, I usu get the regular but that's because I also get the beef rice on the side. It also comes with an egg on the size!
The bad parts of this place are the limited seating and also it's cash only. They do however, have a bank of america atm inside so that's super convenient. They also have this self serve water which can get tedious when the water runs low.
Other than that, the price is pretty reasonable and I always leave happy. :) -

Ramen and I have a long-term (open) relationship that started when I was a small child. As such a young age, my mind could not grasp the complex flavor that is Ramen, nor the pure joy of eating it while hanging out with friends. Ramen, although I know we can never be in a monogamous relationship, know that I will always be one of your almost #1 fans. Thank you Santouka for allowing my love and I to be reunited once again.
Dislikes: Cash-only.
Neutral: A bit on the salty side, but I already know that I have a low tolerance for salty foods.
Likes: Everything. I mean, did you not read the introduction? ;-)
Star Rating: I can't say for sure that this is the all time best place for Ramen, but I do know that I will always come back to this place when I'm back in the San Diego area. -

They serve a great Spicy Ramen here. The broth is a little on the salty side, but it's very good tasting. Noodles are good and I like flavor. It's very busy here during lunch and getting a seat can be a challenge, so this place is not usually my first choice.
I still prefer Tajima, but, once in a while when I'm shopping at Mitsuwa, I'll grab a bowl.
There's really no service, so I can't comment...oh, and cash only! -

Sweet! I think I found my ramen haven.
It was a cold SD night and ramen felt fitting.
To preface this review, I have had ramen at other places in SD,
and my impressions have been lukewarm (pun intended).
I really do appreciate it when they have fake food displays at Asian restaurants.
Sometimes illustrations or pictures doesn't lacks that 3D effect.
Anyways, I went the the #35 (spicy miso ramen with extra pork).
I knew after the first taste of ramen broth, I was sold.
I was extremely impressed with the fact that I didn't have to fuss with my food
with extra condiments.
As a spicy food lover, I was more than satisfied.
The noodles, pork, green onion, and seaweed all worked together so well with the delicious soup.
Don't be tricked by those bowls though.
On an empty stomach, it was quite the task to finish my medium sized bowl.
Go ramen! -

I have no idea why anyone would prefer any other ramen place! I have never been a fan of ramen but this place blew me out of the water!!
It's SOOO DARN GOOOD! The bowls look tiny, yes? haha so I ordered a large with extra meat. Bad choice. Man I had so much noodle left over but it's all about the broth! So flavorful, so rich, so yummie!!!
I gotta go back!
