Review from Risa Y.
The Sandwich Joint has been right across the street from where I work for about 5 years now. The Sandwich Joint just sounded so generic, and I never really had the urge to cross the street to try this place out...
So this place is GOOD. This little gem was right across the street all along and just because I was too lazy to cross the street (it's one of those places where you kind of have to jwalk to cross the street, otherwise you have to walk all the way to the intersection... cross it... then come all the way back) I did not know how great it was until just recently...
I ordered a simple Turkey sub. It was fresh, the veggies were crunchy and it tasted healthy. I felt like the owner (or manager?) made the sandwich with so much care it was perfect.
I will probably frequent this place from now on... I will walk all the way to the intersection and back for their subs~Listed in: Discovering Downtown LA…

I do like their sandwiches, which is a great size for the price the prices. It's about 7-9 dollars for a sandwich, salad, or a meal from there. For that price, I'd rather go to Mendocino Farms and all. However, they are convenient from my work and I do go there when I'm feeling a little lazy.
Their bread is totally nom nom nom!!! So fluffy and crusty. Is it bad that I would like some spaghetti, pasta or some saucy creation to dip this bread in? noms.
I'm not sure what kind of dressing they gave me one time for the salad that I ordered to-go, but it was GROSS. I had to come back to my office and use something else. It had a sour-y taste to it. blech. -1 star! -

What a great little sandwich shop. And it is little, but it's very clean and nicely decorated with artwork and photos. The sandwiches aren't gourmet, like those from Mendocino Farms, but they're superb nonetheless. The ingredients are fresh and there are lots of meats and veggies to choose from. I especially like the tasty mustard-based sauce you get on the side and the gherkins/cornichons. You might be a bit disappointed, though, if you like a flaky crust on your bread.
Nearby parking shouldn't be hard to find, but it won't be free. However, it's an easy walk or DASH ride for those that live/work in the area. -

Wish I could give this place more stars. This is my first post because this made me join yelp to comment.
I've been coming here since I moved to Westlake. I eat here at least 3-4x a week, so I'm pretty much an expert. Also I'm from NY so I have real sandwhich standards. I was very happy to find a great sandwhich spot walking distance from my apartment that wasn't expensive. I gotta say.. the bread, the meat, the fresh vegetables, the cheese, and generous portions around make this a great friggin deal. The little pickles are a great touch and add a lot of flavor.
The owner is extremely nice and never forgets a face. Staff is always friendly with that laid back LA style we all love. They get the job done. In fact, I have very particular orders -- no peppers no cucumber -- and they always remember it without prompting.
The walls have local artists, nice touch and reminds you you're in a LOCAL SMALL BUSINESS -- let's keep 'em in LA!!
I recommend the Salami with provolone (which is what I am eating as a type this) or the Salami/Turkey with Bree.. Also check out their juices, the mango one is pretty good. -

These sandwiches are solid and packed with good stuff - the bread is crusty (not soft and mushy like some subway sandwiches I know...), and the veges are crispy and fresh. I usually order the turkey roast beef. I love the dressing you can dip or pour over it (thick, mustardy, and sweet). I'm also a BIG fan of the cornichons - I like to pull them out and take little nibbles of them as i eat the rest of my sandwich.
It's too bad (free) parking is hard to find around the downtown area. So consider yourself lucky if you live or work close enough to walk there whenever you want. -

Waaaaaaay too salty!
I was so excited to try this place, so I went during my lunch hour. Took a ham & turkey sandwich to go and went back to the office. First bite I thought "wow, this is salty, let me take out the olives." Second bite, "OK, I guess I have to take out the pickles." Third bite, "dang, it's still super salty, maybe I shouldn't have gotten cheese in it." Fourth bite, "OK, I have deconstructed this sandwich and it's still super salty." In my opinion and taste, both ham and turkey way too salty. -

I absolutely love this place! I come here at least once a week since I work just across the freeway and the guys that work here remember me now from my order--Turkey Pastrami with provolone with most of the veggies, toasted. They have figured out the perfect bread to meat ratio and the bread is delicious. They always have fresh toppings and, yes, the mustard vinaigrette is amazing (I suggest ordering extra as I pour a dollop on each bite). If I have one very very minor complaint, it would be to cut the tomatoes just a little bit thinner, since they are sometimes far too bulky. Five stars all the way though!

This place has the best prosciutto sandwiches EVER!! Been coming here since the day they opened, love the fresh sandwiches so much I took my staff here for lunches. Scott the owner is a great guy as well. Love the way the place is decorated with artwork and photos. KEEP UP THE GREAT SANDWICHES SCOTT!!!

Obvious fresh ingredients and friendly service. The sandwiches were an amazing happy surprise. There are more standard toppings than you would ever expect, and I enjoyed even the ones that normally concern me. This is truly a shop that encouraged me to try -- and I enjoyed -- new sandwich ingredients.

Finally - an amazing deli in downtown LA!!! I had the roast beef sandwich. The veggies are so fresh, the French bread is solid & the mustard vinegrette is a must have!!! My 2 coworkers loved it, as well. The sandwich artist in there definitely has a knack for making a fabulous sandwich! Also, the prices are reasonable. Try this out for lunch, you will not be disappointed!

SOOOO SO Good! Everything is so fresh and the little shop reminds me a NY kind of place. It's hard to find a sandwich like this in LA.
I actually prefer the Veggie with Cheese over all the meat sandwiches, the veggies are so fresh. -

My coworker was talking about this place a whole lot so I finally went with him to pick up a quick dinner one night. My actual words to him as we entered the door were "You know you've set the bar pretty high for just a sandwich..."
I fell in love with this place upon seeing the large black artwork behind the counter because I couldn't agree with it more. Artsy and edgy, but not over the top (we have Silverlake for that).
THE SANDWICH WAS AMAZING. That's all. I'm not going to waste time and finger energy trying to describe a sandwich, just go and freakin buy one already. I'll never look at Subway the same again... -

2 1/2 Stars (rounded up)
Came by here between classes after hearing about it on a "weekly yelp". I wanted to eat 1/2 of the sandwich there and then head back to school, but finding street parking was tough (didn't feel like paying a flat $5 for 20 min in the structure), so I parked in the passenger loading zone across the street and ran in.
The inside had a cool little setup and was pretty clean. Bathroom was clean too. I just went in to wash my hands, but noticed that they had funny poems or something taped on the wall so you have something to do if you're plannin on taking a while.
Ordered the Turkey and Roast Beef and it was ok. Rounded up for good friendly service. -

So I'm new to Yelp and new to Los Angeles, so I've been relying on Yelp users for suggestions near my workplace. The Sandwich Joint had a bunch of good reviews so I decided to check it out.
The shop is small, but clean. When I got there, only about 6-7 people were there and it seemed cramped. I can only imagine what its like during the lunchtime rush.
On the bright side, the food was pretty good. I got the pastrami sandwich on the french bagette. Everything tasted fresh, though the bread was a little too crisp. Next time I will be getting the crossaint...and yes, I will be going back. -

Everything is very Fresh. Scott (the owner) takes great pride in his work.
I tend to order the Chef Salad. It's $10. But it's HUGE! Easy to share between 2-3 people. And yes you will get full. It also comes with a loaf a bread. The bread is nice and crunchy on the outside, and soft on the inside.
All of his sandwiches are pretty tasty. They are in the $8-$10 range. Yes, you can go to Subway and get a $5 foot-long. But you'll be sorry. One, you're getting an amazing sandwich or salad with very fresh ingredients. And two, you're supporting your local eateries.
Kudos Scott, Kudos! -

Tried today for lunch. Thanks to Yelp for another great suggestion. Got the Ham Turkey Salami sandwich on wheat roll w/everything on it. Pretty large sized portion. I had only 1/2 and was very full. Excellent sub sandwich and the veggies are as fresh as everyone says. Good portion of deli meat. The toppings are great. I particularly enjoyed the cornichon and pepper pickles. Seating is limited and it get's busy. Lots of folks swinging by for lunch. Go, you won't regret it!

Had a pastrami and provolone sandwich with everything on it. I was pleasantly surprised. The sandwich had a very fresh taste to it. It was filled with tomatoes, lettuce, red onion, pickles, cucumbers, peppers, and olives. However, it was the mustard dressing made the difference. The dressing was super yummy!

I always ask what the owner had earlier in the day and he will tell me some kind of concoction he worked up. I will then tell him to make me the same or something similar. Every time I do this I get a great sandwich. The shop is always immaculate and has quite a great collection of contemporary art on the wall.
If you're in the mood for a veggie filled, crunchy, fresh, perfectly prepared, best sandwich you ever had, all in a great environment ... This is the place for you! -

My lunch-buddy coworker and I eat at this place often. The owner (assuming that's him) is friendly, attentive, and inventive. He takes the ordinary and makes it special and delicious. Price is right, they're quick and within walking distance of our office. The fun and changing artwork reminds me of eating in a San Francisco cafe. Too bad we always have to rush back to work!

Hermosa Beach, CA
I just might have been the biggest Sandwich Joint fan years ago when there was a location in Hermosa Beach, and I cannot express my excitement when I found out there was going to be another one!!
I made it there for the opening (6/23/09) and everything was just as I remembered! Absolutely incredible sandwiches, wonderful service, and a 100% guarantee I'll go back!
Everything is very fresh, made to order, and the mustard vinaigrette is extraordinary. I highly recommend the roast beef or salami sandwiches. Just remember there's only one guy doing all the work - and if he gets busy, it's worth the wait.
Thanks for not changing a thing! -

The sandwiches were good but I was horrified when one of the guys making the sandwiches dropped the nozzle caps to one of the sauce squeeze bottles put the dirty cap onto the cutting board ( where he prepares the food). I mentioned it to the cashier but she didn't seem to care.

yummy fresh sandwiches! lots and lots of fresh veggies, with a healthy serving of sliced when you order deli meat, all topped off with a yummy yummy mustard vinegarette.
my favoriye part of the whole experience is that scott (the owner) is OCD about keeping his kitchen clean. Nothing says delicious like a spotless kitchen. :)Listed in: Top Restaurants

REALLY good sandwiches and fresh ingredients. I ordered mine with wheat bread and it was surprisingly fresh and delicious. Only downside is that he ran out of tomatoes by the time we got there, but he hooked us up with free cheese because of the inconvenience. The swiss cheese is super soft and fresh, which you can't really find too many places. Also, you MUST MUST MUST try their mustard vinaigrette that they give on the side.... heavenly. Really great customer service and delicious sandwiches.... what more could you ask for?

The only possible problem I could have with this place is that the sandwiches are TOO big! Great for downtown lunch. Staff is friendly and quick. Sincerely hope this place stays in business since it's the best sandwich anywhere around here.

so i haven't yelped in a long time. a looooong time. got annoyed with people that yelped to add another notch on their yelp-belt. (don't particularly care if you REALLY like the Rite-Aid by your apartment in the valley, okay!)
well, the Sandwich Joint suddenly awakened the food critic in me. i was that surprised by the tastiness of the sandwiches. the first sando was pastrami. on the first bite, the buds of taste in my mouth immediately informed me that my teeth had just split open a perfectly seasoned, crisp cornichon. now the sando had my full attention.
next bite, a nice portion of moist, tender pastrami and, wham: cornichon coupled with spicy pepper. huh? who would have thought? the french roll, along with rest of the ingredients [lettuce, tomato, green peppers, and cucumbers (don't care for olives)] are all fresh. every bite seemed to top the previous one. and, when i added the mustard vinaigrette you get on the side, it kind of made me finish the sando, even though i was full 2/3 of the way through.
since my first visit, i've had turkey and ham/turkey. the quality is very consistent and no skimping. now, i ask for a side of cornichons and take my sweet time eating them with my sando. heck, they even taste great with chips.
i have a feeling i will try every sando on the menu (except for the veggie).
btw, today i managed to convince myself to share a couple of small portions with two of my co-workers and both thought the sandwich was delish.
like it says on the front of the typo-riddled menu: TASTE THE DIFFERENCE. indeed! -

New York, NY
On a bike ride to school, I was determined to find a nice little Westlake cafe for a quick coffee and snack. Two criteria: someplace I'd never been and somewhere on the way. My first stop was Moxie...good reviews, quirky pic, good location. No luck - it wad closed! Second was Jolt-Bar...but as I rode closer and closer into downtown, I realized I had passed the address where it was purported to be located. Oh well - here was the Sandwich Joint tucked inconspicuously into a ground floor space of the heaping Medici. It was almost closing time, and the friendly proprietor was idly working at his laptop. I ordered a latte and a sad-looking croissant from the pastry case. Both were DELICIOUS! I sat at the window seat and watched pedestrians saunter by. I am normally bothered by the art that cafes display because it is usually unspectacular or presumptious, but the art here is smart and original.
Very cool City West surprise. -

Just started working down the street and overheard the coworkers saying that the sandwiches here were real good. So I was curious and in the end was very pleased. I enjoy a stuffed sandwich with all the works. I ordered the turkey and roast beef which included all sorts of fresh, crisp, cool, veggies. The bread was excellent as well, a very nice baguette. Definitely will go back soon. Enjoyed the side of spicy mustard that was included in my to-go bag.

I thought this place looked familiar! As I drove by when I was in LA the other day, I was so excited to see that Sandwich Joint is back - darn it that it's not in Hermosa 'cause I loved getting a sandwich and eating it oceanside. Anyway, glad to see it's back with the same yummo bread, fixings and dijon vinaigrette. It is hard to get a decent sandwich on good bread in LA. Right on!
