This aint' no "five star review for everything" type of review.  This is a carefully thought out five stars.

Sandwich Island is so immensely unassuming and underwhelming when you walk up.  It's got an odd little location inside a run-down shopping center (of which USC hopes to tear down soon), and the old "cash only" sign scares off our plastic reliant brethren left and right.

When you get past the cover of this book, you find yourself in a novel worth eating.  Talk about a metaphor breakdown.

Don't even read the menu.  Seriously.  Why would you read the menu?

    Order a Steak & Cheese.

I know what you're thinking: "I like to read menus in my free time."  This isn't free time.  This is serious time.

    Order a Steak & Cheese.

A 5 dollar bill is enough to snag you a regular sized Steak & Cheese (don't even worry about the giant size unless you've got a giant friend with you to share).

    Order a Steak & Cheese.

Back to the broken metaphor: the protagonists in this story (the husband and wife who own this place) are protagonists you'll thank for your sandwich.  Damn.  Another metaphor breakdown.

    Eat here.

This place is the best. Great alternative to Subway. Personal favorites are the Turkey Avocado and Hot Pastrami w/ Cheese.

I was just talking to the owner about how great the reviews on Yelp! were, and her response was something along the lines of "I don't own a computer. I just care about making the best tasting sandwiches using the freshest ingredients."

    Now that's heart.

I really love this joint. The lady behind the counter is super friendly and efficient. Recommendation: ask her to toast the bun.

Turkey is really good, and the the sandwiches are pretty big. You can share the large sandwich. I really the veggies and the bread. Everything taste really fresh.

Right next to USC, and convenient. Its cool that it is in a plaza. Go there and eat it.

    SO. GOOD.

The steak and cheese sandwich is amazing. I've been to the UV food court quite a few times, always going for the salad place across. However, craving a veggie sandwich once I had theirs and the bread kind of fell apart. So I tried this place instead and omg so good. After I first tried this place I kept coming back every other day for about two weeks because I was addicted.

I love getting the steak and cheese sandwich on wheat with potato salad. The chinese woman taking your order may be abrupt but is deadly accurate and will have your sandwich done before you can even say what sandwich you are going to pay for at the cash register. The steak is well seasoned and perfectly marinated and juicy with cheese that stretches out like it does on a pizza commercial. (Pics included FY reference) I normally avoid onions at ALL costs (even if I have to forego a meal) but this is a scenario I don't mind so much with the steak sandwich. The onions are sweet and the texture not raw and crunchy and gross, just complements the steak.

Prices are so cheap too! around 5 bucks for a huge sandwich. I haven't gotten around to trying a different sandwich since I am always brought to my knees by the steak and cheese but some day it'll happen!

If you're ever craving a bite to eat but don't feel like going to Subway for their insubstantial sandwiches, this is the place to go. :)

I really love this joint. The lady behind the counter is super friendly and efficient. Any cold sandwich can be turned into a hot sandwich (aka meat+ cheese melted, bread toasted, all that jazz). I usually get the turkey avocado and ask for the cheese to be melted= yummmm!!! There may not be a much of a variety in terms of vegetables you can add, but all the vegetables are fresh and Sandwich Island never skimps out on the veggies. WINNING!

Every time I order here, I'm always thinking "this is what a subway sandwich should taste like". Hit this place up asap if you haven't already. Trust me-- you'll get more than your money's worth. :3

warning: this place is cash only so be sure to bring your wallet, not your card!

Located in the University Village plaza across the street from USC. It's in the same plaza as the Starbucks I tend to frequent in the mornings and was always curious what was in the food court there. One day I strolled on over to the food court and started craving something with nutritional value, don't ask why I just did. I went with the regular 6 in. Turkey Avocado. Damn, now that's a pretty big sandwich and quite tasty at that. All the ingredients tasted fresh and was pleasantly surprised how good the sandwich was. This place is a perfect example of "don't judge a book by it's cover." At first glance, you think to yourself how good can a sandwich taste from Chinese owners. Yea, so stereotypical, but seriously when you see Asians behind the counter of a sandwich shop, do you ever think it's gonna be good? I for one most certainly don't and I'm Asian. I was kinda hesitant myself of ordering but I'm glad I did cuz they do know how to make a pretty wicked sammich. Definitely will be back to try some more of their sandwiches.

This place is a hidden gem in the rotten looking UV food court. This place is cheap AND fast. I ordered the turkey avocado and whoa, the lady was generous. I saw her put on like 3 layers of turkey and about 1.5 avocados. She was very speedy, efficient, and most importantly, friendly. I think this place is MUCH better than subway because it's got more volume, tastier, and cheaper. But the only draw back about this place is that it's CASH ONLY. I had to go to Superior to get a cash back (well I needed groceries anyways) so that I can come back here to pay for my yummy sandwich.

Sandwich Island looks pretty sketchy on the outside, but it's actually really great!

The lady who works there (it's been the same lady every time I've gone, a petite Asian older woman-maybe the owner?) is really friendly and loves to make sure that you know, "whatever you want, you can have!"

I'm vegetarian so I'd recommend that sandwich for those that love avocado--they don't skimp on it like most places, and everything is really fresh. For less than $5 there's no reason to go to subway.

Everything about this place is amazing.

I came here with my friend and we both got the bacon turkey and avocado sandwich (he got the regular and I got the giant) with a side of potato salad. Okay one word of advice... the gian is HUGE... it's 2 of the regular sandwiches, so I ate one and took the other one home. The lady who was working (maybe the owner?) is sooo nice! The sandwich was incredible... we were both blown away! And the potato salad was great too.

I 100% reccommend this place and I'll definitely be back.

Just one thing, it is kind of hard to find, as the signage isn't very good, but when you enter the food court through the main entrance it's directly to your right.

This place is amazing. Owners are friendly and will quickly remember you if you go with any consistency. They absolutely STACK the sandwiches, then roll em up nice and tight so each bite carries all the flavors you put into it. The ingredients are fresh. Ridiculously fresh. So fresh that I suspect they have under-the-table dealings with some black market farmers or something who deliver the stuff right off the field every morning. Also the sandwiches are cheap, I think I get more food here for my money then at Subway. This brings me to the only negative I have, and it's a pretty big negative. This place has RUINED Subway sandwiches for me. Any time sandwich island is closed and I have to settle for the nearby Subway I can so vividly taste just how cheap and crappy all of the ingredients are, it seriously almost makes me gag. Curse you sandwich islaaaaannndddd!!!!!

OMG.  This. Place. Is. INCREDIBLE.  I got the veggie sandwich, my friend got the steak and cheese.  BOTH: amazing.  Recommendation: ask her to toast the bun.

As a non-USC student...it was fun to hang in the food court like we were back in college and the woman who made the sandwiches was so sweet and knew how to make a killer sandwich.

    TOTALLY GOING BACK.

Being a person who overcomes numerous obstacles in pursuit of food, I unwaveringly brushed aside the challenges keeping me away from the Island of Refuge and Sandwiches, including illegally parking in some fast food place and having to ask directions every 2 steps to find my way to this magical food court.  In the end, one's perseverance was rewarded with the best reward there is.... big fat sandwiches!!!!!!!!!

We got a pastrami sandwich, size small.  DELICIOUS!  Good quality pastrami, yummy and hot.  Half of a small filled me up more or less for the afternoon (no small feat indeed).  And cheap!  Don't remember exactly but it was maybe $5?

We got a turkey avocado size large sandwich to go.  Now this is what I call a sandwich.  HUGE, so huge i can barely open my mouth wide enough to eat it.  We ate it the next day on our drive to Santa Barbara and it was still pretty good.  Filling.  Yummy.  Love.  $8 or 9.

The Chinese lady behind the counter totally chatted us up.  Told us her story of immigration, how she's been running that shop for decades.  She was super nice and attentive and spoke to me in Chinese and fawned over us like we were her kids.  Made me miss my mommy!  Sigh*

I was going to hang out with my husband for his lunch break at the last minute and yelped this place.  It's located in a food court in a shopping center that faces Jefferson or USC (by Denny's), so don't let the address confuse you.

Once in, I walked up and ordered their #7 veggie sandwich on wheat, including cheese and avo for less than $8 for their large  - my other option was a veggie ham with veggies (no cheese or avo).  Got it to go and it was simple, but good and filling for 3 of us.

    Thanks for the recommendation!

Vegetarian ham.  I love this little spot. I went there often when I was in college and I don't think in a decade and half their prices have raised much. Same asian lady helping me with a nice smile always wondering if I want avocado on mine. YES please!  I always make a journey here when I'm in the area.

Being a USC student, I've come to this place in the UV numerous times and I absolutely love it! Parking is pretty easy to find since you have the whole UV parking lot and you just have to walk in to the food court to get to this gem.

    FAST recap:

    Food: 5

Steak Cheese Sandwich: Honestly, I haven't been able to try many of the other sandwiches because I am so addicted to this sandwich. For under 5 dollars, you get this amazing sandwich filled with tender, well marinated steak, melted mozzarella cheese, which stays gooey and keeps its perfectly melted texture with every bite; and fresh vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes, onions, alfalfa sprout) all on a bread of your choice. Definitely cannot go wrong here. I got my roommate addicted to it too.

Pastrami Cheese Sandwich: Not as good as the steak cheese in my opinion, but then again, pastrami isn't my favorite meat, so it could be great. Basically the same thing as above, except with pastrami and you get to choose your cheese.

    Atmosphere: N/A
This place is a stand inside the UV cafeteria, so I can't really rate the atmosphere here. You'll basically be sitting among mostly USC students.

    Service: 5
Really great service. They make your sandwich fairly quickly and you can watch them make it right in front of you. The family that runs this place is really nice and friendly.

    Total: 5
Ever since I discovered this place in my sophomore year at USC, I've been coming back to get a sandwich about maybe once a month. The price is amazing and I think if you get the large or gigantic (I forgot what they call it) you basically get two sandwiches for a cheaper price.

    Extra tips: Cash only!

Dear Sandwich Island, we first met while I was a young undergrad at USC and you helped me add a bit of variety (and healthiness) into my diet of walking-distance eateries around campus. Not only are your sandwiches huge for the price, but the people who work behind your counters are friendly and remembered me... though perhaps that's just because I was a frequent visitor. Now, years later I've returned and you do not disappoint. Thank you for such a lovely long-term relationship.

But seriously. The special of the turkey avocado, potato salad (or coleslaw) and drink for around $8 is great. The lox & cream cheese bagel is great. Yeah it's not gourmet, but for what it is, yum. And it's MUCH more food then the newly installed Seeds on campus.

It's located, in case you can't figure this out from some of the reviews, in the University Village food court across from USC's campus. It's near one of the corners, so you can just walk straight in from the outside to the counter.

I was recently in LA for 3 days and I went to Sandwich Island twice. And pretty much the only reason that number isn't much, much higher is because I only stumbled upon the place on the last day of my stay. But no worries, I'll certainly be back in the future.

The food is delicious. The offerings are pretty much all standard deli fare, but the ingredients are all incredibly fresh and tasty. On my first visit, I had a turkey, bacon & avocado sandwich "all the way" - lettuce, tomato, mustard, mayo & sprouts, served on a freshly baked wheat roll. The avocado was, as one might expect of an unassuming California deli, fantastic. On my next visit, I had one of the best bagel, cream cheese & lox sandwiches I'd devoured in a long time. The salmon was out of this world.

The staff is incredibly friendly and efficient. They move the ordering line so quickly, when I reached the cash register I received no less than 5 completely unnecessary apologies for two minute or so wait I had to endure while they finished my sandwich to order.

    Eat here!

    Dear Sandwich lady,

If I weren't gay and if you weren't married, I'd ask for your hand in marriage. Your sandwiches were absolutely phenomenal. Huge, cheap, and absolutely delicious. What more could I ask for? You talked really fast and were so nice to shove my hand away when I tried to pay the 13 cents that I owed you with another dollar, saying, "Don't worry about it." You made that sandwich faster than I could say, "For here."

I was so glad that I ordered a potato salad along with one of your sandwiches, but to be honest, you make humongous sandwiches that I could be full for hours without any potato salad. But I was still happy that I got some potato salad because it was so well-made. The mustard, celery, and potatoes all went perfectly together - a winning combination. It was perfection.

But of course, you're known for your sandwiches, so I'll get to that. When I got one of your turkey sandwiches (cheap at a mere $3.99) and took one bite, I was just blown away. Everything was fresh and delicious. The lettuce was crisp, the tomatoes were juicy, the turkey was tender, and the bread was dry. Absolutely amazing. Just writing this makes me want another one of your delicious sandwiches. Perhaps I'll get a pastrami sandwich? Turkey avocado? I know I can't go wrong with any choice, knowing how well you can make a sandwich.

In a nutshell: I love you and your sandwiches. Just note that you'll probably be seeing me on a weekly basis.

    Love,
    Andrew

we just had a great day at The California science center and my fiancé looked up healthy eateries in the are and 'Sandwich Island' was on the top of the list. So we decided to check it out and we were very happy we did. As soon as we got there the nice female owner recommended the turkey avocado sandwich . So I went with the regular size special that includes my sandwich, medium soda and potato salad or your choice of cole slaw for under $6.
My fiance decided on the large which was so huge he ate the rest at home for dinner. We bit into our sandwiches and oh my god, freaking awesome, hearty, good turkey and half a sliced avocado.

We were enjoying this so much and the potato salad was so yummy as well. She was very nice and made sure that we got as many of the ingredients that we wanted in our sandwiches.

I am definitely going back to this place since I work in downtown. check it out!

This is my favorite place to come to at the University Village food court! Even though the line can get long sometimes, service is always very speedy, thanks to the super nice and friendly Asian lady who's making the sandwiches a mile a minute.

Their turkey and avocado sandwich is really good! It tastes veryyyy fresh.  She puts in a LOT of avocado and the prices are so cheap too! You can get a combo which is a regular size sandwich, potato salad, and a fountain drink for a little over $5. They also have chips and cookies, as well as a wide variety of Snapples and Arizona ice teas.

This is a quick place to get a sandwich but the turkey here is very generic and not very tasty (its not deli meat). I had a turkey an avocado sandwich that was packed with meat but it only tasted okay. I'd much prefer subway to this place, but this place is definitely inexpensive.

First off, University Village is old and depressing. It needs to be remodeled.

Secondly, I love the Chinese lady who works here. I ordered a steak/cheese sandwich (4.70) and asked for mustard. She insisted I get no mustard. I was like "what? Dude, this is my sandwich." But she insisted that she just made herself a steak/cheese sandwich and it tastes better w/o mustard. I said no! But she kept going anyways.

Ok Chinese lady. You were RIGHT. You win.

Afterward my meal, she gives me a huge smile and said "Ha! I told you so!"

Mom & Pop have a little sandwich stand in the food court across the street from USC,  They tell me they've been there for 16 years.  The Chinese couple enthusiastically serve and prepare sandwiches to your specifications.  I've only had the turkey avocado or the Tuna sandwiches, many times now.  I prefer the sliced bread which seems fresher to the rolls.  6 bucks for a huge sandwich with potato salad and a drink for 6 bucks is a real deal and qualifies as super budget lunch. closest free parking is in the lot on McClintock behind Yoshinoya, and walk into the courtyard in the center to find the food court.

Little stand in the UV, right across from USC. Soo much better than Subway.

The sandwiches here are not only cheap, but also fresh and filling! They have both hot and cold cuts, although the hot selection isn't big. If the lady makes your sandwich (as opposed to her husband), she'll PACK your sandwich like a plump Chipotle burrito. And she always makes it super quickly so you'll be outta there in no time!

Favorite cold = turkey avocado, and favorite hot = cheese steak!

This is one of the better places to eat at in the University Village. The couple that runs this place are so cute, especially the woman. They are so friendly and I feel they put a lot of love into making your order, haha. I've only ever had two types of sandwiches here... the steak cheese and the turkey avocado. They are both pretty good and it's made relatively healthy, but I like the steak cheese one more. It's made really fresh and the melted cheese mixed with the juicy flavor of the beef hits the spot. The whole sandwich is pretty filling for only about $4. It's a great deal for a great sandwich, and a nice change from Subway with a little more flavor.

So if it wasn't raining (subway would do rainy day specials) hey college kids are broke. The place to grab a sandwich around the campus of USC was always sandwich island. its an all around great sandwich. I prefer to stick with the turkey avacado on wheat. The bread is fresh the turkey is piled high and the avacado is creamy and YUM! I want one!
Everynow and then during football season when I'm around campus I will stop at the uv to grad some adult beverages and I will still grab myself a turkey avacado sandwich from the Island.

Staff is always super nice and fast. regardless of the size of the line. stop by and check out an island I would not mind being stranded on.

Co-workers and i had the turkey, avocado and bacon and the pastrami, delicious!!!!
It looks exactly like the picture and has the taste to back it up.  The bacon was perfectly cooked and crispy.  It was nicely seasoned with oil, vinegar and s&p. The addition of bean sprouts was a nice touch.
The pastrami was really good too!! We really enjoyed the fact that it wasnt greasy.  I actually liked it with lettuce and mayo, along with the usual pickles and mustard.
The service was prompt and they were very nice.  The price was just right.
The only reason this place didnt get a 5 was because none of us really liked the potato salad.  too tangy and too much mustard.   the coleslaw was good but needed a lil more seasoning.
We will definitely wil be back again.

Since I'm planning to move to New York in the very near future, I'm walking down a bit of a culinary memory lane lately.  As a USC grad, I can think of no other staple in the area that makes me sadder to leave LA than Sandwich Island (or as I affectionately referred to it, "The Sandwich Lady").

I moved to LA for school at USC in 1996, and immediately found Sandwich Island.  After maybe 2 or 3 visits, "sandwich lady" (the head honcho of the establishment) remembered my order (vegetarian on wheat, swiss cheese, avocado, order of potato salad, cherry coke).  14 years later, she does not forget my order, even if it has been a year or two since I last paid her a visit!  Her husband works there as well, and he is a very nice guy.  I really ought to learn their names after so long...

Anyway, the sandwich is great - with substantial veggies and a whole half an avocado.  The potato salad is phenomenal.  Best I've ever had.  I know that sounds crazy, considering this is just a mom/pop shop near USC, but it truly is mind-blowing.  (Because I was such a regular customer for so many years, she often would not even charge me for the potato salad!  I think she was just so happy that I enjoyed it so much.)

Sandwich Island deserves your business, so if you're a USC student or just work in the area, please pay them a visit.  After 14 years, I'm still a customer and will drive across town just for the food to this day.  I think I'm gonna make a special trip over there tomorrow...just writing this is making me hungry. :)

This place rocks! They're fast, super nice, and a great bargain. The giant sandwich is like 2 big sandwiches. Plus, they have vegetarian / vegan ham sandwiches which is what I always get.

If you go there more than once they will totally remember you and what your order was before. They have never made a mistake making my order either. I really hope they stick around when the UV closes.

By the way, the *only* thing that keeps me from eating there more often is they only accept cash. Other than that, no complaints.

This place is amazing and the 2 other reviewers are clearly letting the location affect their reviews.

I'm a big sandwich guy and the sandwiches here are GREAT. Used to go a lot when I was at USC. I have a friend that drives down from Santa Barbara just to eat here. I drive here from the west side sometimes just to eat.

The portions are huge, the bread is great, the sandwiches are great, the potato salad is great, it's cheap. Can't say enough about it. If you're in the area you need to try it.

    My favorites:
    Hot Roast Beef
    Hot Pastrami
    Turkey-Avocado
    Tuna-Avocado
    Steak

For big, cheap sandwiches, why go to Subway when this little gem is right around the corner? They offer a variety of cheap, filling sandwiches (I'm always full from a half-sandwich or a small or whatever they call it), which are made super quickly and usually eaten even quicker. Very friendly owners, too.

My only beef is that they don't toast most of the sandwiches (only hot specialty ones, which are a bit extra). But I'd say that about a third of the time I visit the (totally awesome) UV Food Court, I eat here (with one third going to the Indian place, and the rest split between Mongo Fresh, the Mexican place, the Greek place, and, when I can afford it, Manna's.)

Love this place. My favorite in University Village because it's quick, cheap, and delicious. The lady at the front counter gradually recognized me and knew exactly what I wanted to order. I've never had service this good at a walk-up and order restaurant. It's even better than some of my service at upscale sit-down restaurants.

For around $5, you can get the Regular which has undoubtedly more meat (or whatever you want) than a Subway footlong. Even though it's only about 6 to 7 inches long, there's just so much more food in the sandwich that it's a much better deal, especially for it's taste.

The only reason that I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 is because every time I go, I get the same cold sandwich (an amazing one at that): turkey, swiss, bacon and ranch and I don't know if the rest of their items are as consistent. That being said, I have also had the cheesesteak and one of their bagels, both of which are great.

It's located in University Village right across the street from USC and has its own, very accessible parking lot. Although the complex is definitely out of date and old looking, Sandwich Island is a nice, casual place to grab a great sandwich.

    Don't forget: CASH ONLY!

Quality food at relatively low prices. My favorite is the steak cheese. (No, not cheesesteak. It's really called steak cheese :)
The workers are really nice and often memorize customers' orders if they eat there relatively often.

Pretty decent sandwiches but stay away from their Turkey meat.  Both times I tried their turkey sandwich, I felt that the meat was probably previously frozen.  The meat had a very odd texture to it and sort of just fell apart instead of having any sort of tear or resistance.  Anyway, I like how they load up the sandwiches with alfalfa sprouts and big slices of tomato!  The bread here isn't that good either.  Now that I think of it, I prefer subway over sandwich island but its good to change it up a bit.  This place is a good alternative to a gross greasy lunch at UV.

The lady who runs the place is like quick, friendly bobble head :)

And a regular sandwich here is like a double-meat sandwich at Subway.  But cheaper.

Cash only, and 4 stars because I don't stray from the turkey/ham combinations and can't vouch for anything else.
