The Sandman Suites located on Davie in the West End neighborhood of Vancouver is worth checking out if you are looking for a good hotel. The rooms are decent in size, clean and have some of the best views I've ever seen in any hotel I've stayed at before. The location is perfect if you plan to walk around town. The staff are very accommodating, professional and helpful. For example, the day we were arriving there was a large street fair being held on Davie, the staff were able to direct us on how to find the hotel and the parking garage. They were also able to accommodate our request to have two rooms on the same floor with minimal notice.

If you are visiting Vancouver, BC and want to be in the middle of everything (restaurants, cafes, shops, bars/lounges, grocery stores) then you should stay at Sandman Suites.

Sandman Suites is conveniently located on Davie Street and Davie Street is a happening place.  Sandman Suites have kitchens so you have the options of eating out or buying food at Save-On/cooking your own food.  Great if you are on a budget.

FYI Coffee addicts: Starbucks is two doors down. YES!  No need to shelp very far to get our morning hits.

Front desk staff were welcoming, friendly, and very helpful.

Its very easy to travel around Vancouver.  There are #6 and #32 buses that run on Davie Street.  Bus #32 will take you to Pacific Central Station (Amtrak and Greyhound).  Both #6 and #32 will take you to the English Bay. Very nice waterfront view.  Then you can walk to Stanley Park from there.

#6 bus will take you to Granville Street - the major shopping area. You will find Sears, Zara, Sephora, Aldo Shoes, Starbuck's, etc....

#32 bus will take you to Vancouver Chinatown. You can walk around and grab some dim-sum.

This part of Vancouver reminds me of NYC. Very convenient and accessible to shops, restaurants, and cafes via buses or by walking.

    Cheers!

This was my first visit to the Sandman Suites on Davie.  In my experience with these chains, they get either be hit or miss, this one I would definitely consider a hit.

    The good:

Front Desk manager Justin was really nice and super helpful. My room actually wasn't ready when I checked it and rather than make me wait, I think he upgraded me.

The suites are bigger than most the apartments I've been in and around Vancouver so that is definitely plus.  I was lucky enough to get an ocean-view room, which makes for an amazing view of the sunset....on a sunny day, which I never got.

The suites were great.  They really were like mini-apartments, with a full kitchen, big comfy beds and a decent sized bathroom.

BIG patios.  Very spacious and depending on where you are, you can get some great really people watching in!

    The bad:
The elevators are PAINFULLY slow and really small.  That is a bad combination that usually resulted squeezing yourself into the elevator like a sardine.

The doors seem to be made of paper, because you can hear EVERYTHING coming from the rooms on your floor.  But not the walls, just the doors.  At one point I thought I let my baby scream for hours, but then I realized I didn't have a baby and that it was infact my neighbor.  Imagine my relief.

I am here for a two week stint at the moment! So far so good! I love the location! It is a short walk to Granville shopping, and Robson! Lots of fun clubs and bars around. No shortage of all types of food!

I went to the fitness center! I must say it isnt bad for a hotel gym, albeit, a little small.

I also signed up to a massage I may be able to make it to...30 dollars for an HOUR! Cheaper than a massage I got in Vietnam...I cant believe it.

They FINALLY got wireless internet that is very fast the second day I got here! wooh hoo!

Extra points, again for three coffee shops all within 40 steps ;)

I can't complain because I didn't pay for the stay here but I am going to comment regardless.

Upon initial inspection of the web site I was very impressed.  The photos of the lobby area are reminiscent of a Kimpton Group boutique hotel.  The service not so much and the rooms even more not so much.

They didn't appear to have enough staff to check everyone in quickly enough.  The elevators are so slow. Everyone was complaining about them it was becoming a joke.

The rooms are not much better than a cheap motel.  The best part about the room was the balcony.  Even then we had to bring the inside furniture out onto the balcony so we could have a place to sit and enjoy the sun set.

The bathroom was the size of a closet with the door swinging in and within 1 inch of hitting the toilet (no lie).  The towels were desperate.  Felt like they had been air dried and very thin.

The bed sucked!  And the room was so small it was ridiculous for two people.  They could have made more space by getting rid of the dresser at the end of the bed.  Which by the way didn' t allow you to walk completely around the bed because there wasn't enough space.  By investing in a flat screen TV they could have saved lots of space.

With that said I am sure the price of this place wasn't too expensive.  The location was great and the view (if you get ocean side) was amazing!

Not going to be on my list of places to say or suggest to anyone who is traveling to Vancouver in the near future.

I'm coming at this review from an awkward position. I've never really stayed at the Sandman Suites. I've slept in their rooms and used their pool but it's always been on the dime of my friends in town who visit. The best guesstimate I can give based on overall hotel experience is through them, who seem to choose this hotel on a regular basis.

Now, as an outside 'guest' though the hotel is pretty enjoyable. I admit I'll agree with the complaints of the slow elevator, but at least it isn't rickety. The rooms are the average Sandman fare, though I've been in a couple classier ones with kitchenettes and big beds. Most of the views are pretty good too as they are quite close to the beach.

The pool is really great though. A wonderful little deck extends out from the spa to a pretty big pool with lots of sunny areas to relax in. I spent a whole afternoon there once and really enjoyed myself.

So yeah, I can't really speak for the full vacation experience, but based on the little bits I've enjoyed I'd say the hotel is pretty up to snuff.

This was my first trip to Vancouver and I picked the perfect hotel! I was on the 19th floor with a spectacular view of the downtown. the room had everything, full kitchen, washer/dryer, wifi, tv and sound system, even a dishwasher! There is a super right up the street for supplies, so I could cook, picnic on the beach which is a couple of blocks away, or just pack snacks and hike to the downtown. This hotel is in a great location and you will not be disappointed.

First time staying here and reserved one of the jacuzzi suites.  At first glance, the room was impressive.  Awesome city view.  But the bed was far from comfortable and the in-wall air conditioning was run down and loud.

The elevators are a joke.  Be prepared to wait, and wait, and wait...it's frustrating.

Location was great - right in the gay part of town and a short walk to English Bay and Stanley Park.  Lots of eating places close to hotel.

It's not the Four Seasons but it's right in Davie Village. So if you want to enjoy Rainbow Row with its many restaurants and nightlife, this is the place to stay. Walking distance to Robson St and other downtown sites.

This property is very interesting.  You walk into the lobby and get the feel of a nicely decorated, well appointed boutique hotel.  Oranges and browns, and attached to a very well appointed restaurant and bar called Moxie's, as you ride the secured elevator to your room you enter hallways finished in modern colors lined with cut stone and quality wall coverings.  You are awaiting with delight to see your room and...

...oh man, what happened?  Let me start by saying this.  It is a NICE room.  A very nice room, but don't be fooled by the lobby, the halls, or Moxie's, or the very creative photograph used by the hotel to show its property; the money didn't find it's way into the rooms.

Real tile and stone on the floors, nice carpeting, and real tile in the bathroom with a ceramic tub and a shower head so well engineered it feels like you're standing under a waterfall.  But, but, but, but, what about the rest of it???  What happened?

The rooms are appointed in well cared for but cheap furnishings.  I've started calling out hotels that still have CRT screens for their TV sets; especially one that presents itself as a hip, boutique, urban retreat.  Despite nice counters in the kitchen, the cabinets are cheap.  The mattress on the bed (isn't that most important thing) was acceptable, but nothing great.  Continuing with the, "what happened," theme, the mirrored doors for the closet are all very cheap, along with the bed spread.  An urban retreat with fuzzy white bathrobes hanging in the closet and a 1995 looking (from decor stand point) standard Wal-Mart issued bed spread?

The rooms was also appointed with very cheap plastic blinds, that didn't do a great job of blocking out the light in the "living area," which also only offered a love seat in the sitting area.  But, the living area has an amazing view down Davie from our 20th floor perch and a rather commanding view of Vancouver.

One last thing, the bathrooms in the entire property are TINY.  Roughly 6' X 8' and that includes a standard 6' tub in that space!  You can, "do your business" and wash your feet at the same time however, if you're into saving time.  We requested a different room with a larger bathroom but were told they were the same in all rooms on the property - ACK!

Front desk staff is great, as is the area with great restaurants, a great fruit and vegetable market, and several outstanding bakeries.  Several posters have commented that this is the "gay" part of Vancouver, but unless you're very troubled by your own sexuality, this isn't an in-your-face experience.

This probably reads as a brutal review.  Is it THAT bad???  No, it wasn't that bad and I would stay again - now that proper expectations have been set.  However in the price range Vancouver has many competitive properties in this class.

We try to make it up to Vancouver a few times a year and have stayed at the Sandman a few times. Never had a problem, but the elevators are incredibly slow (the reason for only 3 stars instead of 4). The rates are moderately affordable (average $100-125 USD/night, depending on the season) and the location is great! Walking distance to everything you need. The rooms are always clean. Never used much of the kitchen except for the microwave to heat up leftovers or the fridge to keep a steady supply of drinks (I'm on vacation - i'm not trying to cook a full meal. If I'm hungry at 2 in the morning, i'll walk down to Mega Bite and get myself pizza or chicken wings). Moxie's Grill is attached to the hotel, but they're really only good for drinks. The service there has kinda been hit and miss. The peach bellinis and GT's (Moxie's take on a gin/tonic) are my favorite. There's a really good Japanese restaurant across the street (forgot the name...) if you're hungry. I'd stay there again and probably might when we head up in a few weeks.
